Buzz Williams was on the latest edition of the College Hoops Today Podcast. I always love getting to hear Buzz interviews as he is very motivating and he always takes things beyond basketball and into everyday life.
Buzz joins the show at the 10 minute mark and finishes at 38:30.
Here a few topics they covered in the conversation:
- Buzz's time at Marquette
- Why he moved to Virginia Tech with shout outs to President Sands and Whit Babcock
- The current ACC vs the Old Big East
- Buzz's transition to smaller lineups
- Recruiting
- This year's NCAA tourney chances
- Buzz's personal successes
After the interview Jon breaks down how he thinks the league will finish (I think this was covered in another thread, so pardon the redundancy)
- Duke
- UVA
- UNC
- Louisville
- VT
- Clemson
- FSU
- UM
- Syracuse
- NC State
- Pitt
- ND
- Wake
- BC
- GT
Chris Clarke also receives a shout out as a breakout player for this season.
I can't wait for football season, but I know I have just as much excitement for this upcoming college hoops season as well!
Go Hokies!

Thanks for sharing! I'm checking it out now.
Appreciate the info, thanks. I have long been a Hokie fan, and to be honest, back when my fandom started, we were more successful in basketball than football, so it is fantastic to see the relevance rising in time to catch another generation's attention. I definitely relegated basketball to second best when the Hokies started their rise in football, just so much rabid fandom and participation to go around, but for a while, I maintained season tickets in both sports, and living near Blacksburg, I would routinely attend baseball games in the spring as well. Buzz is definitely a great addition and his accomplishments are already paying off in excitement for fans looking for more Hokie thrills.
Is it just me or does anyone else's heart sink a little whenever a new thread is started with "Buzz Williams..."
So glad we locked up the contract extension. This should be a very exciting season!
My apologies on the title as I definitely don't want to induce any heart attacks. From the interview, Buzz sounded like a guy that is invested in building a sustainable program and working every day to #getBetter. I'm definitely glad he got an extension and hope he keeps growing deeper roots as each year passes.
No worries! I just get nervous whenever I see any thing Buzz Williams related because I am terrified of losing him and feel like it could happen at any moment.
That contract extension gives me no comfort at all. It won't matter if Buzz wants to leave. His buyout is even a little weak.
The contractual commitment to Buzz' Bunch gives me more comfort. But still not a lot.
I would put the O/U on this tenure at VT at 5 years and I would unfortunately have to take the under.
To be perfectly honest, I'm more excited for basketball season this year.
....I can't believe I just said that. And yet it's true.
Same to be honest. I like the multiple games per week, and every loss not feeling like the end of the world.
I definitely agree on all of those fronts. My better half doesn't like basketball season because I fuss at the refs all the time for not wearing O & M glasses while officiating. I can get myself worked up for football games as well but those are limited to Saturdays.
Have to agree with Rosthein on the Chris Clarke prediction. After a year of experience I expect him to have the game under control and hopefully be better at shooting. But I actually think Ahmed Hill will have a better season than Clarke. From what I've heard, Hill was ready to break it big time before his injury, and has continued to improve after his injury. I am very hopeful for this season.
It was cool hearing from Buzz what type of impact Clarke had once he returned. Buzz highlighted that we were 5-1 after his return and the impact he had on our smaller lineup. As you said, Hill was ready to explode before his injury and there is also a lot of excitement around Outlaw. Buzz definitely has things on the up and up. Even if his time here ends up shorter than we want (hope and pray it isn't), he has set this program up very well for the next hire.
