Virginia Tech gained its first commitment of the 2018 recruiting cycle from Bryce Thompson on Saturday. Thompson made his pledge to the Hokies while visiting for the "Blacksburg Bash".

The 6-0, 180 pound athlete camped at Tech last Sunday, and the Hokies offered Thompson a scholarship shortly after.

The Dutch Fork \ Ben Lippen (South Carolina) product also held an offer from East Carolina. He is currently unranked by 247Sports, Rivals, and Scout. Although, Jim Baxter of SCVarsity.com is bullish on Thompson's potential.

Not a totally newbie, but sat out his sophomore season in 2015 after having flashes of greatness as a freshman sensation at Dutch Fork. The 6-0, 185-pound back could be the best in the state at his position by season's end.

Looking beyond rankings and offers, Thompson is a prospect Justin Fuente and staff identified early, evaluated in person, and obtained a verbal from.

So the guy was injured his sophomore year, almost everybody forgets about him...yet,
(he) "could be the best in the state at his position by season's end."???
That certainly doesn't suck.

A picture is worth a thousand words. A gif is worth a million.

Kid goes to school in the shadow of USCe, great pickup.

Welcome to Hokie nation!

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

Definite speedster as a freshman in high school.

With only one year of HS ball under his belt, it's a little early to make judgements as to how he will pan out, but I'm assuming the basis of the offer was his showing at the camp, along with his upside. Did they say why he missed his entire sophomore year?

He sat out his sophomore year after playing like that as a freshman? That coach must have my luck.

He transferred so maybe that had something to do with it.

Athlete - but what are we offering him as? Looks like he'd be a good shifty RB for us.

Totally didn't read "shifty" the first time through and thought that was a harsh way of critiquing a commit as a running back.

Dutch Fork is a legit program in SC. Played for State two-ish years ago

What about where he transferred?

Heard of it but now sure how good it is. But if he was a freshman sensation on a state level team in 4A (highest in SC) that's a good sign.

Guy on the left in the picture looks kind of like Paul Johnson...

Proud Hokie since 2004.

I almost thought it was. Definitely did a double take.
