On Eve of Fall Camp, Justin Fuente Remains Tight-Lipped on QB Battle, Dishes on WR Depth

The coaches provided a brief preview of the team's depth situation headed into fall practice.

[Mark Umansky]

Hokies fans and pundits alike have been pontificating on who will start under center for the first game of the Justin Fuente era for months now, but on the cusp of the kickoff of fall camp, the new head Hokie has a simple message: don't hold your breath.

Fuente has acknowledged that he sees the quarterback battle as a two-man race between Brenden Motley and Jerod Evans, but even with fall practice set to start Thursday, he has no timeline just yet for naming a starter for the team's opener against Liberty.

"I don't have a date in mind, we're just going to see how it goes", Fuente told reporters at a press conference Tuesday. "I'm really not trying to hide anything for the first game or anything like that. I believe that we are going to go out there and execute what we are trying to do offensively with both of those guys. Sure, there are small differences in them, but whenever that comes about, we will act on it and move forward. But, I haven't looked at the calendar and said 'We have to have something by this date or else'."

New offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brad Cornelsen was similarly coy on the subject, but he was at least willing to detail what he'll be looking for from Motley and Evans in camp. He noted that the pair will split reps, at least in the early going, and he's hoping to study up on more than just their stats.

"You have to take into account what else is going on out there," Cornelsen said. "It's not just a statistical battle of completions or interceptions, it's what else is going on and what situations those guys are in."

The coaches had a bit more to say about the receivers those quarterbacks will be throwing to, especially when it comes depth at that position.

Most notably, Fuente revealed that Henri Murphy, a junior college athlete the team signed in June, would be eligible to play this fall and will get the bulk of his work on the offensive side of the ball as a wideout. The team initially announced that Murphy would be taking a mandatory redshirt year in 2016, and he played mainly corner in high school, making both pieces of news a bit surprising.

Indeed, they even had a domino effect throughout the team's depth chart. According to Fuente, word from the NCAA that Murphy would be eligible helped shape the way the coaches thought about moving former receiver Deon Newsome to safety as well.

"Henri Murphy will be eligible this year, so while that played into the decision it was not the sole decider," Fuente said. "We have some depth issues in the defensive backfield and the wide receiver spot. We felt like we have helped those two problems with the switching around."

Cornelsen is certainly glad to have some wiggle room in the receiving corps. After all, he's still searching for consistent options behind Isaiah Ford and Cam Phillips as he looks to build a full complement of able receivers.

"If you could go into the season with six or eight, that would be ideal," Cornelsen said. "We've certainly made it with less, played games with less. You take as many as you can get, but certainly six would be a fantastic number to get to."

But as the team works to identify those players, Cornelsen thinks versatile players like TE Bucky Hodges and FB Sam Rogers might be just what the team needs to bridge the gap.

"Those are two guys, I'm not sure that we've had guys exactly like (them)", Cornelsen said. "It's going to be fun moving those guys around and finding ways to use them to take advantage of some looks."

Phillips would be certainly glad to have the extra help.

"I think it definitely keeps us fresh," Phillips said. "We don't have to take plays off, if you will, because we know we have to play the whole game. We'll be able to go out and give everything we have with every opportunity we get."

A return to Tech's roots in the running game might help take some of the burden off Phillips and company as well, and on that front, Fuente is similarly uncertain. He noted that he hasn't yet been able to fully evaluate Shai McKenzie and Marshawn Williams as they've recuperated from injuries, something he's looking forward to changing this fall.

Similarly, he's hoping to get a fresh look at last year's breakout player at the position: Travon McMillian. After several hot and cold interviews when asked about how McMillian will featured in this offense, Fuente is anxious to see McMillian at full speed this fall.

"He looks like he is moving with more confidence," Fuente said. "The times I've seen him moving around, his body looks better, part of that may be that he is more healthy. He just seems to be more confident in what he's doing."

Defensive coordinator Bud Foster isn't without some uncertainties of his own, particularly when it comes to the mike linebacker spot. Following Carson Lydon's departure from the program in the offseason, the team is painfully thin behind starter Andrew Motuapuaka, and Foster is well aware of that fact.

"That is a concern spot at linebacker, to be honest with you," Foster said. "Obviously at mike, I have high expectations for Andrew Motuapuaka after getting a first full year of starting under his belt. Experience is the best teacher, and I am expecting him to take big strides."

However, Foster is more enthused about Tremaine Edmunds' potential at the backer spot.

"He reminds me of a bigger version of Xavier Adibi we had a couple years ago," Foster said. "That's a credit to the kid because he is long and athletic. He is very versatile. He can be good as a blitzer, he can be good in the run game, he can be good in the pass game having long arms in the throwing lane."

He's equally excited about Tim Settle, now down to a svelte 326 pounds, to pair with fellow DTs Woody Baron and Nigel Williams.

"I am hoping that will make an impact on our ability to stop the run up front.," Foster said.

When it comes to the secondary, Foster said he's hoping that Newsome's move to safety marks the end of any positional shuffling, but that doesn't mean the secondary won't look a bit different this fall.

"We want to have a little bit more high safety and have more eyes on the football so to speak," Foster said.

But all of this is just hypothetical until Thursday, when the Hokies strap the pads on to open up fall camp in earnest.

"I think our kids are anxious to get out there and practice football and not just run back and forth across a field or just bench press," Fuente said. "That's kind of the neat part about football; when you get tired of doing one thing, you get to go do something else."

Did Ford never show up? He was listed on the live stream as one of the five players that would speak.

He was not there. We only got four players (Clark, Conte, Motuapuaka, and Phillips). I think I heard Pete say he was stuck at an airport or something to that effect.

Great Article Ryan...Looking forward to more of your quality work....any word on the True Freshmen linebackers Belmar, Beckett or Eron Carter? Hoping one of them is good enough to back-up Motu...I just don't see Huelskamp as a real solution especially being a small guy. I do like SH's guts though, nothing against him, he can certainly contribute. Raymond Minor and Jamieon Moss are getting up there, both are scholarship guys I believe....need to see them step up.

So excited about Henri Murphy and the speed he brings. Potential KR/PR as well. I can see Fuente using his speed to confuse Defenses especially in the Jet sweep.

How the deuce does that work??

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."

perhaps...

1) he has only played 1 year; AND
2) he was a qualifier out of HS and didn't have to complete JUCO academic requirements to become eligible; AND
3) he was released from his LOI from the school he originally signed with so there is no transfer penalty...

then he could/should have 3 years to play?

Thanks. Didn't know his background/assumed he had played two years

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

Awesome first article. Disturbing to hear we don't have a starter at the most important position going in to camp, or even a front runner. If you have two qb's you have none. Would be nice if it was because they are both so good he can't decide but I am guessing it is on the other end of the spectrum...

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

that's all coach talk... I'm sure they have a front runner but there's no point in saying who that is with camp just about to start. Come August 17th if we don't have a starting QB named we can start to get a little worried.

My guess is the coaches will know who the starter will be by Aug 17, but we as fans likely won't know until Sept 10.

I would imagine both QBs getting looks vs Liberty, just to keep Tenn guessing.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

I would imagine both QBs getting looks vs Liberty, just to keep Tenn guessing.

I feel like everyone keeps saying this but I don't understand why. There isn't a big difference between what Tennessee would scheme for between Mot and Evans. Not like the difference between Brewer and Mot. This isn't like Cardale and Barrett, who are completely different QBs.

If Fuente hides his hand, its going to be by only showing a few different formations and no wrinkles in the offense. That would actually keep them guessing. Playing two Qbs just gives less time for QB1 to sync with the offense.

I agree with this. I don't see any sense in playing both QBs. With very little experience, I would prefer whoever does start plays most (if not all) of the game to get game reps before Bristol.

Onward and upward

I think there's more difference between Motley and Evans than a lot would think. Evans looks to be a much better runner than Motley on film. He sells his fakes extremely well in the read option game and makes quick decisions. Very shifty runner, and I think he has better quickness and speed overall. Evans is more of a get the ball out quick type of passer, whereas I think Motley excels better in a play-action deep passing attack (Evans has some deep throw accuracy concerns). Both are athletes with good arm strength, but I think there are definitely some differences in how you structure your gameplan between them.

Definitely differences in the way they play, I just don't think its enough to make UT worry. At least not compared to the moves Fuente pulled out for Ole Miss.

moves Fuente pulled out for Ole Miss.

^^This
This is what HC Fuente will do for the UT game. Pyay his #1 QB with a limited offense against Liberty and bring out as much of the playbook as possible against UT.

Pain is Temporary, Chicks Dig Scars
Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

I think there is a front runner, if not a starter known to the coaches. I think Fuente is just playing it close to the chest, as Meyer did. Why tip our hand to Tennessee before we need to?

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

maybe. I think he's being more honest than perhaps we're giving him credit for. Both QBs are similar so I really don't think it matters to Tenn (or anyone else for that matter) which QB is going to start. I really don't think he's trying to hide anything from any of our opponents. I really do believe that they just haven't seen one guy separate himself yet. We have to get ready for the fact that our QB play might not be very good this year. I know Brewer was tough as nails and he worked hard as hell but he wasn't a superstar and he was the best QB we had over the last 2 years. If Evans hasn't separated himself from Motley yet (which I don't think he has) then I don't know if he's going to be head and shoulders better than Brewer right off the bat. He certainly has a higher ceiling and may well surpass Brewer at some point but it just won't happen overnight. Hokies fans need to buckle up and get ready for uneven play from that position this year.

Onward and upward

Look at it this way, is it fair to determine who is the smartest in the class after the midterm exam or who has the better final grade? That's basically what the QB competition is. All Spring was installing the offense. So each player is going to make mistakes and really can't fairly be evaluated beyond their own skills because they are still learning what to do. Now the Fall is about who runs it better. So it's completely fair to assume that 2 players in a new offense with a new coach haven't completely separated themselves by the time Fall practice starts. And besides, Fuente plays everything close and tight lipped, so I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't publicly know the starter right away. He may know who he wants right now, but there's no reason we need to know at the moment. So calm down with any pessimism about "uneven play" until you actually see our starter play in the offense that we haven't even truly seen. God, I'm ready for the offseason to be over and the reality of the season to be here rather than the message board speculation roller coaster of grandeur and utter failure every other day.

Okay, calm down. I'm not being pessimistic and saying this offense is going to suck because we don't have a QB. I'm being realistic. How many first year starting QBs come in and light the world on fire? It. Is. Rare. I don't want people to expect the second coming of Cam Newton and then be disappointed when that doesn't happen. You make valid points about the QBs not being fully evaluated through spring because they were just trying to learn the offense and the fall camp evaluation is more important. That kind of falls right in line with my theory that the coaches really don't have a QB1 in their minds yet.

But either way, I really don't think it is fair to expect our QB to come out and torch defenses right out of the gate. This offense isn't just new to them. It's new to all of the skill players and the O-line as well. This O-line is working with their 4th coach in 5 years. It's downright foolish to expect them not to make costly mistakes. When you do see a first year starting QB come in and play like a senior it's usually because he has a lot of help around him. We don't really have that at VT. I don't think it is pessimistic at all to expect rocky QB play. Especially since I think that the QB play, and play of the offense in general, will improve over the course of the year. With more reps in the system, more game experience and added familiarity with the players around each other this offense should look better and better each week. But it won't happen over night. It won't happen in the first half of the season. By 2017, I fully expect this offense to scare everyone on the schedule. This year is going to be sloppy, though.

Onward and upward

Well, it can't really get much worse or more inconsistent than it has been the past few years. I would expect a simplified, wide open offense would at least slightly improve upon Lefty's overcomplicated hodge podge, especially considering the returning talent. I don't expect a lights out top 20 juggernaut, but it will be incredibly concerning if he can't at least marginally improve the production from last year. If we're still just as sloppy and unproductive as last year, I don't buy that it will magically be scary in '17.

If you're going so far as to say that not choosing a QB is an indication that Evans isn't that good or much better than Motley, which you did say, then yes, you are being pessimistic. You are refuting the exact point I made in saying that there is no way to fairly judge them based solely on Spring practice. I never said that anybody would come out and torch defenses from the start, though we should torch Liberty without question. What I'm saying though is that you are making predictions and setting expectations without any real information beyond speculation and historical anecdotes. There's reason to believe that this OL, while being with a new coach, can be one of the best we've had in a while. While we aren't deep, we have a trio of WRs who are more talented than what we had with Boykin and Coale. You can take every one of your knocks against them and flip it the other way. You can't be realistic though without reality and speculation is not reality. In the pre-season, you are either optimistic or pessimistic. Being realistic comes when you have actual evidence to support and you are either denying or accepting the truth of the situation.

this has clearly come down to semantics. We obviously have different ideas of what pessimistic views are leading up to the season. I'm definitely not the guy who is going to root against his team and hope that I'm right just so I can come back and beat my chest on some online message board. I honestly want this team to win every single game and go to the playoffs and come home with the trophy. Realistically, I don't see that happening. Does that make me a pessimist?

In any case, back to the original point. Does Fuente already know who his QB1 is going to be? I don't think so. I don't think he is being coy. I think he is being honest. Do I think it will be Evans? Yes. Will we know before Liberty? Probably not. Will Evans be a superstar and top 5 QB in the ACC this year? I sure hope so but I'm not holding my breath. Will our offense be scary good this year? It would be awesome, but I don't think it is fair to expect that. Can our offense be scary good next year? We'll have to see how they progress over the course of this season, but I'm optimistic that they will be very good next season. I just don't think it will happen over night.

Onward and upward

I don't see him playing 2 qb's. He choose Lynch, an underclassmen, and stuck with him the whole time to develop him. He seems like he is great at evaluating upside and willing to ride the consequences of short term struggles to get larger success down the road.

It will be Evans or someone younger. Motley will squarely be the back-up.

Just so long as he gets useful backup reps. Don't have to keep [qb2] on the bench until the final whistle, either.

___

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

I saw the spring game, and both looked like they needed work. No surprising given its a new system for both of them, and they were distributing reps a lot more widely at the start of spring. If you left off the spring wanting both to do their best to improve, and feeling like each was close to what they showed on the spring, you tell them this is their offseason to get the job and let them go for. Saying something different now, before they even get a chance to show off how they improved over the summer, would be a real asinine thing to do. If you are gong to run the QB a lot you would like to have a #2 that is close to the starter, and has enough reps to confidently run the system, as they will likely have to win a game for you somewhere. Did the coaches think someone had a lead coming out of the Spring? Likely. Had they earned the job, where the other player could not catch them by working on their weaknesses of-season? No. Naming a favorite or starter in that position is counter-productive IMO.

See, this is what I like to see. Get a guy that is absurd for the position and stick him there. I think this represents a change from our old philosophy. He might have ended up at DE like Dadi but we're sticking him at middle linebacker. In a few years he'll put on 15-20 lbs and NFL scouts will be drooling.

Excellent article Ryan, I look forward to many more.

There's no reason to sweat the QB position until there's a reason.

Motley spent most of 2014 with a bum back, and wasn't practicing until middle of the season.

Last year, CSL, put all of his eggs in one basket with Brewer which robbed Motley of any time to get ahold of Loeffler's crazy, and overly complicated offense.

Motley is a good athlete, with a strong arm. He made some great plays last year but he was not property coached.

I'm not going to worry about Motley having the starting job until he starts throwing picks and the losses start adding up.

Something tells me Fuente will have an offense designed for a QB to develop and gain confidence; getting the ball out to the perimeter to Ford, Bucky, Phillips, Travon and Rogers, while missing in designed QB keepers.

If the online will also do its job and prevent whomever is under center from running for his life, that would be great too.

How is Ricky Walker progressing? He was a 4* guy ranked #9 in VA and I haven't heard much about him yet, all the talk has been about Settle.
