Week 1 BlogPoll Ballot

Virginia Tech Hokies football, basketball, athletics blog and forum featuring: unique columns, breaking news, film studies, in-depth analysis, recruiting, videos and jokes.

My full poll is after the jump. As always I'm going to rely on y'all to keep me in check so leave your opinions, thoughts and suggestions in the comments. Happy Labor Day everyone!

  • Boise State - For my money, Boise State's win was the weekend's most impressive. The Broncos raced out to a 21-point lead and methodically nursed it for the remainder of the game. If Boise State was a WWF superstar its finisher would be an armbar. There's nothing flashy about them, but they are fundamentally sound in all three phases of the game and do a suburb job of limiting mistakes. The only place Boise can go from here is down. As the teams ranked behind them play in, and win, their marquee games they'll, probably, eventually put together a more impressive resume.
  • LSU - The Tigers defense held the Ducks to 335 yards. Oregon averaged 530.69 yards per game in 2010. It's evident that Oregon's young offensive line wasn't up to the challenge Saturday night. They were either spinning their wheels, or getting pushed backwards. LSU would have been higher had their offense looked capable of beating an elite defense.
  • West Virginia - StlHokie made a good point last week, they are talented and led by veteran quarterback Geno Smith, and should be higher.
  • Notre Dame, Georgia and Auburn all get the ban hammer (for now) after their lifeless performances.

I disagree and think that LSU's victory was the most impressive. Georgia had a losing record last year and lost their best player to the NFL.

lol #newhoos

Boise?

Boise #1? When Georgia has a .500 season or worse again we will get a good sense of how much less impressive Boise's win was Saturday night.

Lol honey badgers

Thanks for that.

Now, Boise St is on cruise control until their TCU game but Kellen Moore aka donkey face and co shouldn't be the lead pony. As mentioned UGA is Garbo.

IM SO FUCKING SHOCKED ND IS NO LONGER TOP 25 lulz.

Keep the top 5 where dey be. They'll play leap frog all year as the SEC champ asserts itself.

Good call on the real 'nears. Big East pimps but BCS busts.

Hokies should have dropped to 10 IMO. David Wilson 4 Heisman yet? FSU was up only 7 nil in the second. Just sayin.

I agree with most of you guys. I think lsu's win was by far the most impressive of the weekend. They made a team that played for the national title last year look awful. As far as the potato farmers from boise go, they beat an over-hyped SEC team that barely made a bowl last year. I would also have to give tcu more props for the way they almost came back against one of the better QBs in the country. Also the honey badgers are not even close to stanford for my money.

Boise's victory was impressive because of where it was and how much of a home field advantage UGA had, but i think LSU had the most impressive victory. I'd have Boise be #3 and LSU be #4, with Bama #1 and OU at #2. Other than that, I like the rankings. And I like that you don't have us ranked too high.

DANNY COALE ALL THE WAY TO THE THREE

Boise not # 1

I think that Boise clearly had a great win against Georgia, but in my mind that still doesn't qualify them to be ranked above the SEC Elite (which Georgia certainly was not).

Even though LSU was a bit sloppy in their win over Oregon, I would rank them above Alabama at this point because of the strength of the opening opponent.

Also, Stanford looked pretty dang tough.

Boise probably a 4

I'd swap LSU & BSU, leave 2 & 3 where they are, swap 5 & 6, I'd move TA&M down two spots based on what I saw in their game last night.

Pretty good

But I'm going to agree that I don't believe that Boise is the best team in the Nation. LSU had the victory over a more impressive opponent (even though I do believe that they were overrated, replacing a big part of the o-line has more effect than most people think). But with that said, LSU didn't really do anything super impressive other than forcing three turnovers. So yeah they have a good defense, but offense...ehh... Id keep Bama and OU at 1&2 with LSU and Boise following up at 3&4.

Maybe drop USCe a bit because they were getting beat bad by ECU until ECU started turning over the ball every offensive play.

And in other news....got the big shout out about WVU, Awww Yeahhh!

Number 1?

I think it's a bit hasty. Will BSU go undefeated? Probably, especially if TCU's APB on their defense is unsuccessful. But I wouldn't put them number 1. NOW, if UGA runs the table in the ESS EE CEE, then the Broncos would be deserving of their lofty status. We'll find out how truly terrible UGA is this weekend against Relf and the Bulldogs.

I think everyone would have a hard time trying to discount what LSU was able to accomplish down in Jerry's World. Not overwhelmingly dominant on Offense, but my goodness that Defense. The first weekend of November in Tuscaloosa will be epic.

1. LSU 2. Bama 3. Oklahoma 4. Boise St 5. Wisconsin

Other thoughts:

I think we will have a better gauge on ND after this weekend. Is Rees a competent QB? How about not turning the ball over 5 times? Under the Lights in Ann Arbor will tell if USF was an anomaly or if the Echoes will remains dormant for another autumn.

I liked what WVU did in a truncated Coal Bowl. Marshall isn't an easy out, especially considering the 'Neers SHOULD have lost last year. I agree with everyone that says WVU is the best Big East team, and I don't think it's close. USF has potential.

Would I rank USC? Probably not. Other than Woods, the rest of the team forgot to play in the second half against Minnesota.

ACC had a typical ACC week. FSU and VT took care of business, as did UNC and UVA. Clemson did a very un-Clemson thing and actually rallied against a decent team. Duke remains Duke (SORRY HEATHER). Big problems at BC and Wake, where you have to hope that Tanner Price's injury isn't too severe. If he stays healthy, Wake runs away in the Syracuse game.

OK, OK, OK

I think Boise looked much more crisp in their victory over Georgia than LSU did against Oregon. LSU was aided by 4 Oregon turnovers which directly resulted in 20 points! And remember LSU's quarterback is still Jarrett Lee. Does anyone believe Jarrett Lee is capable of driving for the go ahead score against a comparable elite SEC defense? Yes LSU's defense was suffocating, but Oregon's offensive line is extremely young. They lost three seniors / 2.5 starters. Their spread blur was so effective last year because of fantastic line play by the front-five.

With that said, we still know very little about any of these teams so it's about 92% (1/12) guesswork and this is a community poll. I have moved LSU to one and Boise State to two.

Is there a nomination for the #1 spot for worst jerseys? Maryland, in a shocker, wrestles that spot from Oregon who has held it for years now.

I been here since day 0.

I just turned on the UM-UM game at halftime and I think my eyes vomited... Dear god what is that monstrosity?

Best duos in Hokie history: Hall & Adibi, 3rd & Tyrod, Georgia & Liz

Ugh Boise State

I wouldn't give Boise State that much credit. They beat what's going to end up being a 6 or MAYBE 7 win Georgia team.

I listen to my share of sports talk radio. I couldn't believe hearing all the Georgia fans last week talking about how they are going to roll over Boise State. Boise State is good. But Georgia isn't all that much different from the team that got completely shut down by a Conf USA team last bowl season.

Interesting note

Dennis Dodd (CBSSports.com) has us at #6 on his power poll...one spot ahead of the Seminoles.

Look's about right

For this early in the season anyone could be no.1 or out of the top 25. Still need more proof.

I the poll is a prediction of where teams will finish the year it is way off.
