What is the all around best performance you guys have seen Virginia Tech have? I am only 20 years old so I don't know about all of those older games that some of you may have seen. My first year with season tickets was 1999 (A good year to start I know).
Just a few examples:
Miami 2003
UVA 2011
Florida State 2010 (ACCCG)
Clemson 2007
Miami 2009

62-0.
murder eyes
this....without any discussion. I could talk about this game all day, but from start to finish, this was an absolute beat down of epic proportions. I had to tape the game because i was on vacation and was driving back during the game. I started watching it at 1 in the morning after getting back, and was FURIOUS that ESPN switched off to another game when it was 55-0 and I couldn't see the finish. The fact that my boss is a Syracuse alum was the icing on the cake.
I'm still pretty new to this site, but if I could have my way, every member here, and every player and coach on the team would be required to watch this 10 times a day, every day, from now until @BEATBAMA. If our boys could bring 1/2 of this intensity & Hokie Mojo against Bama, we're golden.............
I dont know about everyday, but thanks to your recommendation I am now starting to watch it.
And that was indeed a glorious game to watch. 'Cuse just rolled over into the fetal position. God I hope we can dominate like that again soon.
... and if bama's punter gives us 14 points we'll be pretty good too. I hope he does.
Love the STICK IT IN chant at the 3 min mark.
This win was made even more glorious because it was sweet sweet revenge after Donovan McNabb ripped our fucking hearts out in 1998.
after hurling on the field no less
I was at this game, it was my freshman year. I remember it being sooooo freakin cold, and it was also the most dominant we have ever looked.
Yeah, Tech-Syracuse in 99 was the most dominant game that I have ever seen VT play against a top 25 team. I lost my voice during that game, Lane was LOUD that night... wow, that almost seems like yesterday. But that game probably wouldn't have been quite that high scoring if that SU punter hadn't dropped two snaps. None the less, Tech's defense that game was magnificent.
AND I also remember one of the media members asking fans for score predictions and this one kid said something like 65-0 and everyone laughed.... HA!
When beamer went after punters it was scary because they were so successful. Sure if he hadn't dropped them it would have been lower scoring...but if he wasn't scared and shaking because tech had already gotten to him probably 4-5 times that game and barely missed, he wouldn't have dropped them either.
Versus Alabama 8-31-13
Logan Thomas finally took that next step, and it happened on the biggest stage of the early season. He was throwing frozen ropes all over the field and running over linebackers all game. Tre Edmunds also broke out, showing that he's the next big thing at RB for the Hokies. Edmunds had room to do his magic because new-hire Grimes had his offensive unit grinding, despite some pre-season concerns about the tip-of-the-spear. They would continue their dominance all season long.
The defense looked truly special that day. Kyle Fuller knocked two WR's out of the game on a couple of WR screens and little brother Kendall had that sick pick six! Seeing those two brothers play together... that was special. Oh don't forget how James Gayle mauled the new look Bama offensive line. Pretty sure that Bama QB is still having nightmares of 99. What was his name again? Eh, I can't remember, he never was the same after that game.
AND that was the game where #BEAMERBALL returned!!! Remember the two blocked punts and blocked field goal?
*Sigh* What a game. What a game.
I like your thinking here #BEATBAMA
Man, you nailed a lot of the good ones.
Before my time a bit, but 1995 Sugar Bowl against Texas was a huge game in terms of performance and relevance to the program.
1999 was my first year as a student, and I remember the absolute beatdown we put on Syracuse that year, after all the trash they talked about being able to handle Vick.
Texas A&M in the torrential downpour (was that 2002?).
Miami 2003 is probably the best overall game considering the rankings and their streak coming into the game. After the tense 1st quarter, once DeAngelo had that strip and TD they made it look easy (On a side note, I still remember a couple years before that when we blocked the Miami punt to get within 2, even after we had thrown 4(?) picks and that UM team was an absolute beast. Don't think I have ever heard Lane so loud)
FSU 2010 - Coale is still open
aTm in the hurricane was 2003 I believe (my Rat year in the Corps)
That was the first game that my friends and I ever bought a pop-up tent for a tailgate. It didn't survive its one and only use.
Miami 2003 comes to my mind as well.
Not the best game ever but still a very memorable one was Miami in 2009 at Lane. Miami fans wouldn't shut up about "Da U" being back and Pickory Harris being a potential Heisman candidate because he was off to such a hot start. The 31-7 beat down definitely shut them up.
If it wasn't obvious, I like beating Miami.
I'm right there with ya. And it wasn't only the Miami fans that wouldn't shut up. The entire week before the game I swear all ESPN talked about was how great Miami was. That was one of the most fun/satisfying games I've ever been too. The rain was the icing on the cake
FSU 2008ish? 3rd and 31 run!
FSU 2010
Clemson 2006 Meh, what thunder and lighting
Clemson 2007
Miami 2003
Miami 2009 Jacory is a Heismen...
Syracuse/WVU 1999
WVU 2005
Clemson 2007, because fuck Clemson. GO HOKIES!
That game is a personal favorite because I grew up 30-ish minutes away from Clemson. Fuck 'em!
The defensive, special teams and tyrod highlights from that game are ridiculous.
My heart aches watching this from how much I miss Xavier Adibi...ADIBEAST
A fond memory of mine. We rebounded after LSU nicely.
In terms of overall impressive play and looking like the other team hit a buzzsaw I would go in this order:
Maryland 04 Thurs night. Right after coach Beamer's mom passed. Total steamroll of the Terps. A lot of ppl prolly dont remember this but it was a beating.
FSU 07...countless highlights
Miami 03
BC 2007 ACCCG...revenge after Thurs night heartbreak
FSU 2010 ACCCG
UVA 38-0
Miami 09
Tenn 09 bowl game
A&M Thurs night in hurricane.
My memory isnt as clear in the MV1 and earlier era so this is what I got.
Ha, I remember the Terps in '04. Freezing cold, wet night game. Fun as hell though!
And the Tennessee bowl game is another personal favorite :D
That has happened since I was first a student? Which was in 1993....
VT vs. UVA in 2005. 52-14 woodshed beating. Complete with turning the dopey scissors into a VT logo on UVA's field the night before the game, LOL!
But also the VT vs. UVA game in 1983. VT 48. UVA goose egg. 'Nuf said. Watched it on a replay I found once. Enjoyed it immensely.
Best game - Syracuse 1999. Everything, I MEAN EVERYTHING, went the Hokies way that night. That still is one of the worst humiliations of a team that I have ever witnessed.
Biggest Game- WVU 1999 - That game put the Hokies over the edge for the title game.
Favorite Game - Miami 2003. The Coliseum back in the heyday of the Roman Empire had nothing on Lane Stadium that night.
Miami 1999
Alabama 1998
West Virginia 2000 (Andre Davis scores 3 TDs 3 different ways)
To name a few that haven't come up on here.
Disagree with Miami 99. It was a great game, but we did not play great in the first half. The momentum swung in that game because Kenny Kelly hurt his shoulder, and because Miami did their thing and shot themselves in the foot repeatedly.
I will say again, it was a great game. So much intensity in that first half ...
Fair enough. I'm going off of vague memories from when I was 7. I'll defer to you here.
As much as I loved the Sugar Bowl win over Texas, we were never more completely dominant than against Syracuse in '99. 62 points from our offense, and the defense pitched a shutout, against what was supposed to be a pretty decent opponent.
well...41 from offense 21 from def and special teams. All I want to see this year is our defense swarming like they did that night. If offense does average and defense plays like that...I will be happy
Whichever team has the ball is on offense. It just so happens that our defense enjoys playing both ways.
I mean it like: If someone says the offense scored 62 points, I think the QB, RB, and WR's must have had a killer game. I only meant that the defense and special teams units scored 21 points while the offensive unit scored 41. I understand your point of view, though.
I know what you meant. I pulled a response out of my ass to cover for the fact that my first post had such an egregious error. Thanks for correcting my facts.
Not the best defensive game, but Miami 2011, where Logan went 23/25 (one dropped pass, one throw away)!!!! That's insane!
Wait you're 20 and you've gone to games since '99!?! I wish my parents had money like that! I'm 20 too and my first VT game wasn't until the Boise State game (well at least they have an easy team to recover against even if it is just on four days rest... well at least we won't have another game on four days rest in the future... GOD DAMN IT ACC). The best game for me is 38-0 bro simply because it's the best performance VT has put on the field while I've been in attendance.
Yeah but you gotta think about tickets back then weren't worth squat. After the 99 season however, as you might imagine, they shot up rapidly and have yet to show any signs of slowing down.
Yeah, my first game was at the age of 9 in 1998, right around the time my parents started getting 2 season tickets, and went to 1 or 2 every year with one of them from then til I started at VT in 2007.
It's really nice having two parents who are both Hokies and understand.
I hope my kids can say this one day. God help the family if they go to UVA or worse, WVU.
I'm expecting at some point in my life I'll have to pull that stunt from the old ESPN commercial from the year Michigan and OSU were both undefeated going into the last game of the season. I'll be in the passenger seat, she'll say she went to WVU, I'll open the door and roll down the embankment, she'll stop, I'll yell, "LET'S GO...HOKIES!!!" and she'll speed off.
I might even do it while I'm driving.
Miami 03 is probably the best that I've witnessed first hand. Don't remember too much of the cuse game in 99. That 03 game was huge and I'd put that night in lane against any game in any other stadium no question
Miami 03 was the absolute greatest experience in Lane Stadium.... The Nebraska Miracle was amazing but the energy was not even close to 03 Miami. If you were at "The Walk" before the game you knew before you even got inside the stadium that there was no way we were losing that game. "The Walk" was never duplicated no matter how many times they tried.
Texas a&m hurricane was sweet. Miami 03 up there. BC 99 was a good one, they were ranked and that completed perfect season.
For some reason a bad one popped in my head. Lose to temple in 97... Had the game won, then they came back. Ricky hall drops ball in endzone.
I erased that game from my memory.
PS: We lost to Temple in '98. Miami-OH was our homecoming loss in '97.
I thought it may have been 98, dorms weren't lining up right in my mind. I remember the Miami of Ohio game and sledge hammering the car outside of west aj.
2010 Georgia Tech. You would think breaking a QB's arm in Paul Johnson's offense wouldn't matter that much, but apparently it does.
Probably not the best ever, I think those have been well documented here.
But here are a couple more good ones...
2004 - Maryland 55-6 (41-3 at the half) - 5 Forced turnovers (1 for TD), Rushing yards: 239-56
2005 - Georgia Tech 51-7 - 2 INTs returned for TD
That 05 GT game was even better because they were ranked #15 and we had the gameday crew in town.
And if I remember correctly both of the INT's were returned to north endzone where chaos ensued.
that game may have been the most fun i've ever had in lane.
there was also a blocked field goal returned for a TD.
The 2 ints for a TD were Adibi and Ellis.
Also probably the only game where "orange effect" actually worked
Yea and we had a FG right before those, so wasn't it like 17 points in less than a minute of game time? I think I've tried to find the clips of it, but had no luck.
I honestly would say 2010 ACCCG vs FSU, yea it was cold but nothing was better then doing that chop for fun at the end of the game to taunt their only war cry!
This is also one of my personal favorites. I played in my high school state semifinals earlier that day in the blizzard and then drove to Charlotte immediately after my game ended. Our first play inside the stadium was Jeron Gouveia-Winslow(or however you spell it)'s pick 6. Plus it was the last game I ever got to see Tyrod play. All around it was a special day.
Also, Clemson 07 is one of my favorites. A pick 6, punt return TD, and kickoff return TD all in the same game. Tyrod went HAM that game too.
In terms of a game being important the entire time, or in other words, the starters are still out there for the final drives, I've come up this list:
2010 ACCCG- putting FSU in their place never felt so good.
2003 Miami Game- see above (insert the U)
2002 LSU Game- domination of a Saban-lead team
2004- WVU Game- again, see above (insert the kissin cousins)
2007 ACCCG- showing Matty Ice how lucky he got earlier that year in Blacksburg. I know the offense struggled at first, but the defense and special teams were stellar. Held Ryan to no TDs and 2 INTs while everyone's favorite, TO Glennon, threw for an un-Glennon-like 3TDs. I had to double check that last stat.
FUCK Matt Ryan. That game was sweet, sweet revenge.
The best 25 seconds of Beamball at the end of the first half of the 93' Indy Bowl. After a fumble is returned for a score, Heather D's Hoosiers get into field goal range and call a timeout with a second left in the half. We block it and run it back for a score. It was still okay to spike the ball back then.
Start at 7:00
Someone please gif Frank's cheering at 9:40
There were some moments in '09 in which I really saw arete in Lane. The whole Miami game was the reason my friends in Ohio became VT fans (and of course, aOSU whupped up on Da U the next week, IIRC). Watching Ru drag those NCSU defenders into the endzone, the entire second half of the Peach Bowl...
and the 2010 ACCCG against Free Shoes--I watched that one in the library while writing term papers on Faulkner with the other members of the class, and I had to leave because I couldn't contain my yelling.
