Josh Jackson's "Really Good Camp" Propels Him Into Middle of Virginia Tech's QB Competition

True freshman quarterback gets first team reps, and Justin Fuente offers insight on special teams, and handling fan expectations.

Quarterbacks Josh Jackson (No. 17), Brenden Motley (No. 9), Jack Click (No. 11), and Jerod Evans (No. 4) [Michael Shroyer]

Virginia Tech's quarterback battle is no longer a two-man race.

Justin Fuente opened up about the quarterback competition after the Hokies' Tuesday practice, and divulged true freshman Josh Jackson entered the fray, gaining first team reps.

"He's had a really good camp," said Fuente. "Great summer. Don't overreact to what I'm saying. I still don't know which way it's gonna go, but he's had a really good camp."

Jackson enrolled at Virginia Tech in January and participated in spring ball. The three-star Saline HS (Ann Arbor, MI) product was recruited by former offensive coordinator Scot Loeffer, and even earned a Marcus Mariota comparison from ESPN's Gerry Hamilton.

Midway through spring practice Fuente acknowledged junior JUCO transfer Jerod Evans and senior Brenden Motley "leapt ahead a little bit" in the quarterback competition. Since then it's been presumed one of the two would emerge as Tech's No. 1 QB.

However, Fuente has been encouraged with what he's seen from Jackson thus far in fall camp.

"I think he's done the three things that we've set out for those guys to do," Fuente said. "I'm not saying on a more consistent basis than anyone else. I'm just saying more consistently than he did it in the spring. In terms of valuing the football, in terms of managing the ups and downs of practice, and in terms of predicting outcomes, you know, distributing the ball to the places it's supposed to go.

"We'll see how it goes. I'm encouraged by all three and all three work hard, are good people, and want what's best for Virginia Tech."

Fuente also noted that Greg Stroman will reprise his role returning punts this season. He, Der'Woun Greene, and a few others are also receiving reps at kick returner. Special teams will be a focus of Wednesday's scrimmage.

Justin Fuente

OPENING STATEMENT:

"Before we talk about practice, I just wanna thank everybody that came out to fan day. It was a really good time. Our department did a really great job putting it on. (It was) a lot of fun to the people that care and love Virginia Tech and Virginia Tech football. I also wanna thank Jeb Burton for coming out today. It was fun to meet him and his sister. The Wood Brothers (Racing) for yesterday. It's kinda been NASCAR week here at Virginia Tech, it's been kinda fun. Wrapped up practice thirteen today. We'll do some more scrimmage work tomorrow. Particularly on special teams. Not solely special teams, but we need to get some really, really good work in there. Continue to evaluate some young guys and make sure we're sound in our schemes and our techniques."

ON RETURN GAME:

"We've got a few guys that can run, you know. (Greg) Stroman, I can't imagine a scenario where's healthy and ready to go that he's not the punt returner. We've worked (Der'woun) Greene, Stroman, and a couple other guys back there at kickoff return. That will be part of the evaluation tomorrow. Kinda see how it goes."

ON IF JACKSON IS GETTING REPS WITH THE FIRST TEAM OFFENSE:

"Sure."

ON IF HE'S PLEASANTLY SURPRISED BY JACKSON:

"I don't know. I just think he shows up every day and continues to work and get better. I don't know if surprised is the right word. That's why I did leave it out there to reserve the right, because stranger things have happened. But I've been pleased that he's making progress."

ON IF TWO GUYS WILL PLAY AGAINST LIBERTY:

"I could foresee any scenario. I'm hopeful in the next week that maybe I can see more clearly potential scenarios. We still have a lot of evaluation left and work to do."

ON OFFENSIVE INSTALLATION THROUGH CAMP:

"It's been good. I think the retention level coming into fall camp was good. Would continue to build on that. I think at times, we as a staff have to be careful about overloading the guys. Continuing to make sure we don't play the Virginia Tech defense this year on offense and the Virginia Tech defense doesn't play the Virginia Tech offense this year. Both sides have done a good job, in my opinion, of keeping that in mind in terms of making sure we're still teaching the fundamentals and techniques that we're gonna use during this season as opposed to just trying to get the better of the other side. We're still, on both sides really, laying the foundation for hopefully the tools and the skills and the schemes we'll need as you go through an entire season."

ON HOW HIS OPINION OF TRAVON MCMILLIAN HAS CHANGED:

"Well I would just say, I didn't have a poor opinion of him. I like the kid, he's worked incredibly hard. He's a great kid to be around. I enjoy every day with him. I just think he has more confidence in what he's doing, which you can certainly understand. He was a freshman last year and had a good season and then has to relearn everything that he's doing out there. On one hand, you can kind of understand why he may be a little bit, timid's not the right word, but just a little bit, a step slower or less confident than he was at the end of last season. But I think he's regaining those things. I think he's getting more confidence in what he's doing and how he's doing it."

ON MARSHAWN WILLIAMS:

"At times, flashes of a really good, powerful, inside runner. He's certainly got a chance to help this team. Everyday, he seems to do something that's better than the day before."

ON DIFFERENCE IN RELEVANCE OF FOOTBALL AT VIRGINIA TECH COMPARED TO HIS PREVIOUS COACHING STOPS:

"Certainly. I think (the fans love of football is) part of the attraction to Virginia Tech for student-athletes and for coaches. It's a place that (has) always tried to do things the right way, but values the football program. I think (it) also keeps that in perspective in terms of not over-valuing what we're here for, which is to help develop young people. But, yeah, it's neat to be a part of something bigger than yourself that's important to other people. So, absolutely, is the answer to that question."

ON IF IT WAS STRUGGLE TO GET ATTENTION AT MEMPHIS:

"Well we had a lot of coverage, good and bad. People noticed it, we just wanted to be noticed for the right reasons. We had a steady, loyal, fanbase that had been through some really, really tough times. Really wanted to, I felt like the neat part of that was they, in my opinion, they really rewarded steps in the right direction. Baby steps. They really felt like showing some confidence in forward movement. They told you good job even though it may have been a 4-8 season. And then the people came back as we began to get bigger, better, excuse me. There was a good core group of people there, and it obviously grew. Which was fun. It was rewarding."

ON IF FAN DAY GAVE HIM A BETTER SENSE OF EXPECTATIONS FROM THE FAN BASE:

"Oh yeah, but I get that quite a bit anyways. I don't have to go to fan day to know that they want us to win."

ON WHEN HE WILL DIFFERENTIATE CAMP MODE FROM SEASON MODE PRACTICE:

"We'll go all the way through this week. Obviously school starts next week. We will not practice on Sunday or Monday, Monday is the first day of school. And then we will go Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, kinda mix and match. Kinda little bit of good vs. good and some scout work. Friday and Saturday, we'll go through our mock weekend. We'll go through a dress rehearsal of everything we do from Thursday, Friday, and then ultimately game day. Which is little bit easier on their legs and their bodies, we don't wear pads and that sort of stuff. It's more of a mental deal. We'll go to our Friday night meetings and all that sort of that stuff. A true dress rehearsal. And then Sunday evening we'll practice and it'll be full-blown for the first game of the year."

ON HOW FAR AHEAD THEY HAVE SCOUTED OPPONENTS:

"For the summer time, it depends on how the, it's different every year. Sometimes it's three games, sometimes it's four games. It depends on when their off week is and all that sort of stuff. For us, we looked at the first four weeks."

Comments

Not saying a lot, but this is a lot less coach speech and a bit more general openness than Fuente has been all summer. I liked the part about focusing on technique/etc. rather than just trying to beat the other side. I think we as fans often get caught up on our offense vs. defense during the offseason while that isn't exactly what the coaches focus on day in and day out.

I'm so torn about the QBs. Brendon has shown to be a true team guy, and I think he has done great with the media. From the little I see on Snapchat, Jarod clearly has the quickest release. And having a freshmen in the mix is very good to hear. Regardless the decision, I don't think I will be mad.

Having read McFarling and Barber's recent articles about Jarod, I am pulling for him. He was articulate and compelling when talking about football and his motivations on and off the field. Not against Brendon or Jackson, just feeling a bit pro Evans right now. I know each player has a story, and may the best guy win, but I feel pretty good about the way the QB job will be handled, regardless.

I love the part about the mock weekend and dress rehearsal for game day. That's how you prepare a team! That's how you get your boys ready to play. That right there will win games and prevent losses to teams like ECU after beating Ohio State or the JMU debacle. Or Temple.

I have no idea what you're talking about.

Now

But are we spending enough time on how to run onto the field? /s

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

I don't think anything released has given us a good feel. As I said following the spring game, I thought Jackson was the most accurate poised quarterback of the available options. That said, he was going with the same receivers as the first two QBs but against the 2nd and 3rd team defensive backs. Evans looked like the guy who moves works the quarterback mechanics for the run game and is very quick with reads. Accuracy was the issue in the spring, and if Jackson is in the hunt, that likely means that Evans accuracy hasn't improved.

Also take into account that this could be a giant shell game to confuse the Vols. Information has been choked down to a trickle. The snapchat went from drills and team work to virtually eliminating anything that shows play structure or a working lineup. My eyes told me Jackson is a legitimate option to be the guy provided he is far and away the best QB of the three. My head tells me that there could be some misdirection at play. Hopefully we get some open scrimmaging in the next week.

Thanks for your insights as always, but wouldn't the LU game give UT plenty of tape to work with? Or do you think Fuente would hide a lot of the scheme and be able to save it specifically for bristol?

I think we will see a bunch of red herrings versus LU. The Vols already have an advantage. Their Thursday kickoff gives them a long prep week.

We didn't see the Bear D against W&M in 2014. Like others have said we'll most likely play it close to the vest against LU, our only advantage against them is they have never seen CJF offense with the caliber of our athletes. I think our offensive athletes can compete with their D, I'm worried about our D athletes against their O...and I can't believe I just typed that but it's true.
However, when we go to South Bend what we see is what we get.

"War was always here. Before man was, war waited for him. The ultimate trade awaiting its ultimate practitioner.”~~Judge Holden

From the film I've seen here's my take. They're all doing pretty good in practice, but no one is really standing out. In fact, it's possible that Jackson is performing slightly better in practice. So now they're trying to figure out who will be better in a game. Game time pressure changes a lot and when three guys are pretty even it magnifies the importance. Josh Jackson could be a true freshman practice all-star, but under the lights in lane he might tighten up. Same for Motley and Evans. I'd look for signal in upcoming scrimmages and if that doesn't solve it, look to see 2-3 QB's against Liberty. That's what I'd do, but I'm writing this as I sip on an iced Blue Bottle coffee behind my desk (thank god for for split screen) so what the heck do I know.

This isn't surprising. Every snap chat session I watch I think, "man, who's that guy?" and then I remember it's Jackson. Just assume he'd redshirt.

Let's Go...

Could it just be that Fuente and Cornelsen are getting our backup and worst case scenario up to speed with the offense so that in the event of injury the backups will actually be ready for once?

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Doubtful. I think they are legitimately looking for the best option to win games with this season. Had always just assumed it would be evans and motley would be the backup with Jackson RS'ing.

What a novel idea. I'll bet that could be patented. It was painful to see the look on Motley's face against OSU as he realized it was then his show. It was even worse to think of it in the context that we had all seen it before vs. UCLA. Motley must have been thinking, "what do I do now?" Leal was no great talent, but somebody owes him an apology. (Sorry to rant in response to your fine post.)

"The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. " Rocky B.

A novel yet bad idea is to take more of your reps from your starter and give them to another backup.

Hard to argue well against that, but to throw your backup under the bus after he was not prepared is shirking one's own responsibility as OC or HC. Just leaving it to chance is not good enough.

"The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. " Rocky B.

If the back up doesn't take it seriously then it's only the players fault. Also blaming the coaches because there aren't enough reps to go around makes no sense either.

I get it about the reps thing. But we will just have to disagree on not having a backup QB prepared to know what he is doing, especially since it had happened before. If the backup is not taking it seriously get another backup. Fuente seems to get it. That is part of a coaches job to figure those things out. Blaming it on the player after the UCLA game is not a fiction. It happened and did not need to be done publicly. At a minimum in his mind Motley also was not ready last year when Brewer went down. I in no way believe he did not take it seriously as we were told was the case with Leal. Motley simply did not appear to have been prepped to play.

"The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place and I don't care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. " Rocky B.

I'm just saying, the reps they're all getting now are general competency reps, game specific reps haven't showed up yet. As long as the first two look competent with those general reps, it's not likely to hurt either of them to the third guy involved and competent. Game specific reps? Whole different story.

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

Why is the idea that Jackson is the best option so difficult to fathom? You've seen Motley play, and Evans played junior college ball. Before that Evans was going to go to Air Force. The notion that he was an NFL-worthy hired gun to come in and take control always seemed very premature in my opinion. Similar to the Lawson hype. Play the best guy, I still don't know what "clearly the best" means. Either he's better or he isn't, either better or the same. Why would he have to be "much better " in order to play? I don't understand that train of thought. Better is better even if incremental

Eh, that doesn't bother me too much. "Better" is qualitative and isn't easily measured. "Clearly Better" is easier to observe and would likely imply that the "clearly better" QB is the obvious best option when considering all aspects of the position.

IMO, people aren't so much surprised that Jackson could be the guy, but more surprised that Evans hasn't separated himself. I think everyone really expect Jerod to be the guy. Fuente recruited him at Memphis, and reached out to him again here, despite having a 4 star recruit and a season vet with a skill set to fit his system.

Hmm, the old saying is if you have two quarterbacks you have none. So if you have 3 qbs you have?

The answer is 1.

As you know, each QB is worth .25, so when you have two you have .5. That is half, which is less than 1, so you have none. However, when you add another QB you now have .75 (.25 + .25 + .25) to wit, you have more than .5 so you now have 1.

Unfortunately for QB4, his addition is meaningless because you are already have 1 QB.

"Don't go to, go through"

Either a HB with extra or three quarters of a FB.

My biggest concern with a 3-horse race is when it comes time to make a decision, who do they pick? At this point in camp, no one has clearly risen above the others and its only become more difficult with JJ rising into the pack. When it comes down to it and no one is substantially better than the others, do you pick the guy with the most starting experience or the most return eligibility left? I agree with most here that Josh has clearly been the highlight of camp for the QBs (from what has been made public) but all this has done is make the decision that much more difficult.

I predict that we will still see J-rod come out for the first snap sept 3 but he will be on a short leash. I think JJ will be the backup leaving Motley on the bench. Nothing personal about him, I just have never seen the IT-factor for Motley to be a D-1 starter. But I also think we will see a revolving door against liberty so I expect all 3 QBs to play at least a series against Liberty (assuming we take care of business and go up by a few scores). In the end, the starter against Liberty may not be the starter in Bristol.

He's no good to me dead.

Let us assume that there is a bit of psychology at play here. Of course Jackson has improved his game and put himself in contention, but the subtle or not-so-subtle signal to Motley and Evans might be, 'this kid has changed the rules so it's now time to grab the bull by the gonads and up your game. I need a leader.'

I think he's trying to take some of the pressure off Jackson with that comment will have everyone jumped to the conclusion that Jackson is automatically now the starter but he is recognizing publicly that Jackson is legit. I think Fuente is pretty low-key and holds cards pretty close to the vest so if he didn't want to stir the pot he could've said nothing at all I think he's priming everyone to be unsurprised when Jackson is the starter in lieu of the comments he already made where Jackson was not mentioned as a potential starter

Seeing Jackson run the offense, he looks in control and like he'd have a
good understanding of the complexities, etc. He seems poised and relaxed
out on the field. The tough decision is making sure he'll get significant playing
time if you burn the shirt.

Fett, I don't disagree with you. I feel like Motley could be waiting in the wings.

To burn the shirt, he has to be the starter. Otherwise, he travels, but they only use him if injury requires it.

I don't think they'll burn Jackson's shirt unless he is obviously the best guy. There is no need to apologize if you always play the best guy.

Definitely agree with above...if Jackson is not the best option he definitely red shirts. It's a waste of eligibility otherwise. I'm not going to read too far into this one. Motley and Evans are gamers and both have experience. One of them will win this.

He's Still Open!!!

Josh Jack will be a good player, but this is just Fuente softening the battle between Motley/Evans. This makes the decision easier to swallow and less personal for the non-starters when you are talking about 3 people vs. 2. Isn't a head-to-head battle anymore.

Nice little mind-game by "The Fountain."

That's a good point. It also keeps Jackson engaged and thinking he's got a shot and is getting noticed, so hopefully he'll keep working hard on improving. With another stud coming in at QB next year, I don't personally care about the redshirt and love the message it sends to recruits.

I'd be curious to see what the community thinks as a whole. Is there a way to set up a poll where folks can vote for who they think will be the LU starter?

Hokie fan | W&M grad

I don't think Fuente is out there to protect peoples feelings. He is out there to win football games. If Jackson is in the mix, it is because he is practicing at a high enough level. This is a new system for all of the players so that helps level the playing field of inexperience. As long as we don't blow a redshirt for him to play a series against Liberty and then not play anymore this season, I will be happy with whatever the coaches decide.

Off topic but does Evans have a redshirt left? (If Motley won the job and doesn't get hurt through the course of the season)

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

I agree that it seems superficial to make the statement on Jackson for appearances, but Fuente literally says "Don't overreact to what I'm saying" as a qualifier to his comments about Jackson. Overreacting would be thinking he has a true shot at winning the job 2.5 weeks from game #1.

He is pointing out the progression of a really good young player, sending positive vibes, and trying to protect collective morale through universal competition. I'm Joey Slye's sport's psychologist...

It would be interesting for him to be taking 1st team reps away from the other guys if he did not have a fair chance of getting the job. You protect moral by putting the guys in a situation to succeed and winning games. If he is taking away reps from the other guys without really thinking he could be in the mix, that is doing a disservice to the rest of the team.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

You also build morale by following up on your word when you tell the players that backups who demonstrate great effort & performance earn reps with the #1's

We're in fall camp right now, and everyone needs reps. Once we get to game week you'll see the starters & #2's pick eat up most of the reps.

But the point of that is to show they aren't stuck as a back up and to keep working. If you perform like first team, you get a shot at playing with the first team. You don't hand out reps because a guy is working hard, you give reps they earned based on performance. If JJ has earned reps based on performance, then he has earned a shot at beating out the other guys, not just to reward him for great effort.

A QB competition is different than other positions like OL where they mix reps to build depth and determine swing positions during camp.

All I know is...during the Spring Game I remember leaning over to my buddy saying, "woooow, that dude should be at prom right now and look that this..."

Also, I just watched the @HokiesFB post "Strap Up, Fall is coming" and that's JAXQBeer and IFord celebrating what looks like a TD mid-video. Just wanted to pour a little gas on this for a minute...

If it weren't for the whole redshirt thing, I'd be totally up for having all three of them take snaps against liberty.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

If Jackson is as good as everybody seems to think he might be, he won't be here five years. If it is getting close to the Liberty game and it is still a true three way competition, I think Fuente needs to discuss the opportunity of burning the redshirt with him. Then you give all three of them time against Liberty with the #1's, who cares if the score is 60-3. Learn something meaningful, don't put him in garbage time to just hand off the ball.

Are you being serious or just parodying what was said about Lawson this time last year?

Not disagreeing or anything. Just curious. :)

Both? I was serious that if the competition was that tight burn the shirt and give him real practical experience. But from some of the other comments it might be a two competition between Jackson and Motley. If Evans is a turnover machine I don't necessarily even want him in competition.

Nothing irritated me more than when Beamer would put in the second team and then turn off the offense. I get trying to not run up the score, but he never let the QB's actually run the offense when they got put in during garbage time. They still need experience reading defenses and throwing during that time and not just handing the damn ball off. (pet peeve)

I think we are blowing this #sauced comment out of proportion a bit. You just assumed it was actually a two man race between Motley and Jackson before this statement as well.

I love when people tell me what I assumed. :)

There is a reason why I said if it was a true three way competition burn the red shirt. I had assumed like everybody else the real competition was between Motley and Evans, until a) we started getting reports the best long ball was Jackson, and b) when the articles came out saying it was three way competition. I don't know if Fuente is only trying drive Evans and Motley harder by saying it is really a three way competition (not intending to pull the shirt) or if it actually is.

I tend to agree. How can we say Lawson was a mistake last year now that we know the outcome? The only player I can think of that most people wish we had an extra year for was tyrod, but even then I would argue that his situation was handled correctly. If we are recruiting the way we should be, we shouldn't need to rely on 5th year seniors to win it for us (at the qb position specifically).

Man we are going from "yes three QBs competing! We are finally stocked there. The choice is only which one?" To "crap three QBs competing! Obviously the two older aren't performing well so the freshman is looking better. The only choice now is to pick your poison."

Just ready for game week and the first game so we can stop with the three good QBs three sub-par QBs etc etc.

Heard a little bit on why this is the case...

Evans has a really bad knack for trying to fit passes into bad spots and is bordering a turnover machine in practice and scrimmage. Jackson protects the ball. Fuente isn't going to play a QB who consistently turns the ball over to the other team, and right now, Evans hasn't progressed nearly as much in the mental game as the coaches were hoping/expecting him to progress this fall. The starting QB spot very much is in the air, and Jackson is getting very close to actually winning the battle.

damn DBU!

Disappointing about Evans but that makes the most sense for why he hasn't locked up the job.

I'd be nervous about running Jackson with his smaller frame. Plus having a true freshman lead the team is tough, although Augie and Sam can pick up the slack there. But if JJ is the smartest passer already he has nowhere to go but up

I don't know, in that pic he doesn't look any smaller than the other guys. Dudes got some guns as well.

Yea that pic does make him look bigger. Listed at 211 on the roster. Although I just looked it up and Dalton weighed in at 215 for the NFL combine. He was a plenty good runner

Is it just me or does he bear a little resemblance to Will Wheaton?

I had a feeling Fuente was shooting us straight. Three-way descent-but-not-good battle of quarterbacks? Play the youngin' and see if he keeps progressing.

TKPC #666 ...man that was long wait...

#sauces

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

It really is too bad to hear that about Evans. I guess I was excited by his gaudy statistics in JC, in only 10 starts, and especially his very few interceptions. I know, JC isn't D1, but you'd think his success passing would give him a leg up. But that's why they have competition. If the frosh is as good or better than the others, you have a multi year starter with a huge possible upside. Man I'm glad I'm a fan and not a coach.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Yep, and looking at Fuente's history most of his QB have a good TD to INT ratio.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Ok, decision made. I am wearing my #4 jersey for the first game. #4=Evans. Deals done. Count on it. Meant to be.Wait.....Ekanem is 4 too. Never mind.

So you should be good, either way.

Nobody seemed to notice Motley is the one actually holding the ball in that photo. There's your QB1

Here lies It's a Stroman Jersey I Swear, surpassed in life by no one because he intercepted it.

Good read. We new there would be some sort of signal, somewhere.

Look at that pic Motley+Evans=Jackson

I think Jackson can definitely win the job, if Evans is turning the ball over, that would put him at a disadvantage. I like Motley's arm and running ability, but he must not be putting it all together either. Jackson could really be a player and I don't see a reason why he cant win the job. He doesn't look like a true freshman in stature and the little bit of what we have seen has been impressive and the coaches definitely think so.
