OT: Netflix Documentary "Last Chance U"

Last Chance U

"Last Chance U" follows a group of young men training to become the future stars of the NFL. Based at East Mississippi Community College (EMCC), "Last Chance U" takes us on a journey to understand the real men of the gridiron at one of the most successful, but least known athletic programs. Each player has incredible talent and drive to be the best, but each face their own unique struggles both on and off the field. As their season takes an unexpected turn, the methods of this unconventional team are deeply called into question. With much to lose, they are constantly reminded of the stakes.

Possible CJ gets interviewed and asked the question, "What happened that led you here?" ??

Still unsure I'd want to hear the answer, but for the crowd who wants to know.

I'm very excited for this documentary and seems like a more modern "4th and Goal" which I suggest you watch here to get you ready for this one.

GIVE IT TO ME ROSCOE!

Considering the reason for his dismissal was never released, I'm going to guess he doesn't say, which is for the best.

Not sure we'll ever know why he was dismissed, just have the feeling that last season would have gone better with him at the starting job we were expecting him to fill.

COME ON, CJ!

Be careful, CJ!

Looks excellent, thanks for posting.

Did anybody else see that CJ was in Blacksburg last weekend working out with guys in the Beamer Barn?

CJ is in blacksburg just about every every chance he gets... kid still bleeds Orange and Maroon.

Hearing that just makes me so sad. I just want to give him a hug and then go get revenge. I tend to think that if whatever he did was so bad, he wouldn't be so eager to come back and visit so often.

What he was accused of was bad enough to get him expelled.

I hate to rehash all this, but I'm not aware of what he was accused of, beyond rumors of what it could have been.

Nothing has been made public, and that's how it will remain. We had lots of speculation and it could be one of several possibilities, but to try to specifically air out what happened would be inappropriate.

"Exit light..."

I figured. Was not expecting a reply.

Honestly, CJ reminds me of myself... I can't go to Virginia Tech because of how expensive out-of-state tuition is. He can't go for whatever reason it was that he was dismissed from the team. I'm headed to Marshall next month probably for the next 4 years. CJ is also headed to Marshall. We both still bleed maroon and orange, though.

Hey I'm with you man, been obsessed with Virginia Tech since I was 5. Applied and got into VT but out of state is way too expensive so I go to University of Florida. On another note if anyone is interested, i was taking summer classes at UF and was eating at a restaurant on campus with some buddies when all of the sudden I see Torrian Gray. He was sitting with a recruit and his family and I swear the entire time he was looking at and talking to the recruits mother, he must have learned...

I fell you my man!

Came to Tech chasing an NROTC scholarship, but turns out they frown on switching from Engineering to Political Science!

But because NJ has such god awful tuition rates to begin with it was actually about 5% cheaper to stay at at VT then to transfer to Rutgers.

ehhh...no thanks!

You're welcome?

For anyone who wants to know, Reavis was #20 for EMCC.

Binged the crap out of this yesterday.

There's a fair bit of CJ camera time, but he is *not* one of the primary protagonists. Choppin Wood is correct, if CJ isn't in an EMCC uniform, he's almost always reppin' VT with some VT gear.

I really liked it, and am totally crushing on Ms. Brittany Wagner. Cute and has a heart way too big for her body.

I love her.

I think she falls in the wife zone...

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

I am voting for Hannah for Homecoming!

Watching this and after seeing Chad Kelly I got a little curious. 247 had him graded at 87 coming out of JUCO. Jerod Evans was graded at 94. Gets me pretty excited.

GIVE IT TO ME ROSCOE!

Can we offer Wyatt?

After watching, I saw a lot of Michael Brewer in Wyatt.

To my knowledge, this whole documentary series took place before and during of last year's college football season so most of these guys, including Wyatt have already signed with a team. I looked him up and it seems like he is going to Jacksonville State

Bleeding burnt orange and chicago maroon

actually Wyatt just walked on at miss st. (they lost a couple QBs) and needed to build depth. idk if he will ever see the field. but its interesting to see after he said he was NOT going to play football there.

im interested to see how franklin does too at auburn. I honestly don't think hes that good but I guess we will get to see.

Will be interesting with Franklin. He seemed talented on the show but not sure
how that'll play out at a big time school.

That opening scene though, what school is going to sign a kid who is out fighting like that on the field? Other takeways, that field is impressive for a school in the middle of nowhere. Seeing Clint Tricket as a coach is weird.

Jugs I have questions for you if you have watched this.

Man, if only we could put up a JUGS signal (a la bat-signal), but that probably would be NSFW...

I honestly thought for at least 5 mins what gif I could use there and decided I didn't need the NSFW hammer.

I'm so confused. What's so bad about this?? \s

"That move was slicker than a peeled onion in a bowl of snot." -Mike Burnop

so apparently it's called JUGS because of the term "jug-handle curveball." I can think of another reason...

yes'm... I have watched go ahead..

Seems like this school is providing a lot of beniefts that not every kid gets. Private rooms for Franklin that he says was a condition of him going there for example. Are there different rules for JUCO? Is your job at FBS school like the academic lady there? Pushing and pulling kids to get this tuff done looking over their shoulder.

I am exactly Brittany Wagner but at the FBS level. We basically are "Super Team Moms" I hear all the drama from football field to classroom and everything in between. I get calls from teachers, I do class checks, I schedule tutoring and class schedules.

In regards to Franklin getting a private room there are a ton of reasons why he could have gotten that. medical issues, anger issues, social issues etc etc. JUCO is a whole different ballgame honestly on and off the field.

Who in the hell is donating all this money for them to have all these uniforms, equipment and this:

I don't even know what school this is...

oh...right, if I look at the topic headline I can figure it out. My bad.

Onward and upward

a lot of those trucks actually come free, could be an alumni or somebody trying to get free tickets or even just trying to advertise their company to the nearby location. The truck isnt the big deal it just takes one successful person to take interest and if you have any nfl talent rolling through its not like thats unreasonable

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

Makes me even sadder to see a community college with that and VT still renting tractor trailers from Hertz.

Lookie Here

Looks like the school teamed up with a local shop who created the wrap for the truck along with the school.

Something like this for VT shouldn't be too hard to do/get? Here's UCF's nothing too special but clearly a moving billboard.

Tech doesn't even have a tractor trailer at all. They have 2 shorter "moving" type trucks with Beamer Ball on them. So not sure what they are going to wrap them in this year.

would expect Whit to possibly look at upgrading this. Seems weird nothing has been done so far considering he's a marketing guy right?

For any of those who would like an additional dose of Ms. Wagner, she did a podcast interview the other week.

Link

she has gotten so much attention its pretty funny. Something along the lines of 30 marriage proposals and lets go out for drinks to catch up.

You think this will lead to a bigger program trying to buy her away?

she loves where she's at that's for sure. If it was me I would look around to gauge interest, never a bad thing to market yourself especially with all the positive reviews going around.

For me the series was both entertaining and sad.

Entertaining in the fact that it is about football. Entertaining in the fact that it is about a program that is offering kids a "second chance" or a first chance if they just didn't have the grades to begin with. They followed the right story lines, gave a good picture of what was going on with the program and offered a look at the JUCO scene. I thought it was a well put together documentary.

Sad in the fact that this might be the easiest opportunity at figuring out life that most of those kids will have and still some of them don't have the capacity/bandwidth to take advantage of said opportunity. I know there are numerous reasons for this. But in the end, that is a sad commentary.

Is coronavirus over yet?

While I found the show interesting, it wasn't what I was expecting/hoping for. I really wish the show had focused more on the athletes; where they're from, how they wound up at EMCC and how they're doing at EMCC, and their struggles in and outside of football. Instead, the show was about 30% football at EMCC through the eyes of the players, about 50% football at EMCC through the eyes of the coach, and about 20% football at EMCC through the eyes of Ms. Wagner.

IMHO, the coach is the most unlikable protagonist of any story line I can think of. All I could think of was how much I hated his leadership style. He was arrogant, condescending, and cared about nothing other than football. He never took responsibility for his actions, always blaming his players. His handling of a potential concussion was amazingly negligent. Getting in multiple physical altercations with an official? Taking time outs at the end of the first half when you're up 48-0? I'm not naive enough to think that all college coaches really believe that their job is to mentor young man on and off the field, but I do think they have a responsibility to somewhat resemble a positive role model. This coach failed to even do that.
