This piece by Matt Hinton (formerly of Yahoo!'s Dr. Saturday [when it was readable]) are projections for the ACC Coastal driven by advanced statistics. Hinton has the Hokies winning the division.
His summary of Virginia Tech follows below, but the entire piece is worth the read.
Reality. It took Virginia Tech the better part of a decade to reinforce its status as the most consistent, bankable frontrunner in the ACC, and roughly three months for that reputation to be overtaken by rust: The Hokies are unranked in the preseason coaches' poll for the first time since 2004, their first season in the conference, and have also been snubbed by a vast majority of the preseason magazines. Thomas is regarded as an underachiever, and at 66, Frank Beamer doesn't have the luxury of rebuilding from the ground up.
A competitive turn against Alabama in the opener would be an encouraging start. (Recall that in 2009 Tech led the eventual BCS champs through three quarters on opening night before fading in the fourth.) But the season will ultimately turn on a three-game, midseason stretch against Coastal peers Georgia Tech, North Carolina and Pitt, by which point we should know whether 2012 was a fluke or the new normal.

9-3 with a loss to bama most likely lands us in Charlotte so I'll take it. But that bama loss just isn't a thing that's happening #BEATBAMA
9-3 is what I expect. Won't be thrilled with it, because as a team and fan base we shouldn't settle for 9 wins a year, but that record should get us to the ACCCG.
I think we win at least one of those toss up games. So 10 or 11 regular season wins. Miami and GT are not that good.
I feel the same about Miami, but Duke Johnson is scary. I think our boys can handle him, but I remember being afraid of him in last years game.
I love our defense. LOVE IT. And by that time, Antone will be back. But Miami will score a lot of points this year.
I'll probably be at that game. I live in FL and my GF said she was planning on getting tickets.
I pretty much agree with everyone on this. 9-3, hopefully either win the ACCCG or the bowl game and get us back to 10 wins (winning both would be awesome too)
That's a solid projection for our season given what we know right now. A five day preparation week for GT... and we play them in Atlanta.... that's not good. Miami will be tough to win on the road too. But besides GT, I think the toughest ACC game is going to be UNC even though we get them in Lane. The diehard VT fan inside me says we are going to play hard against Alabama and pull of a huge upset (given we are due for one, especially one of these big openers). But, the rational side of me is saying that even if we play well, Alabama still has more talent and more depth. If we play Alabama hard and don't make stupid mistakes then I will be somewhat happy. But like anyone else, I'm looking for Tech to win and will be upset if we fall short for another big opening game.
Totally agree with my fellow CPA
14-0
With UVA going 1-11...I didn't even realize how close it would be for UVA to really shit the bed this year (shitting the bed = less than five wins this season)
I would say that we will beat GT easily as we are much more talented but playing only on 4 day's rest. That's a lot to ask. And on the road at Miami scares me. Athletes everywhere and Duke Johnson is scary good. Wish that one was in Lane.
not just duke, but their oline is concerning as well. they are massive and talented.
