Trying to watch the Liberty game from OBX

Good morning TKPers,

I'm headed to the Outer Banks the weekend of the Liberty Game. I really don't want to miss the first game of the Fuente era so I'm trying to figure out where I might be able to catch the game.

The schedule on the Tech website says it's on the ACC Network so I'm already not liking my chances.

From doing a little research, a bar called Barefoot Bernies keeps popping up as a possible destination for watching the Hokies.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Edit: Thanks for all your suggestions! To clarify, the check in at the beach house isn't until 2:30pm so I'm definitely looking for a bar that will show it rather than just flicking on the tube at the house.

The ACC network means local channel that carries the Raycom games. For me it is the CW in Myrtle Beach. So need to know what's the nearest city/media market you will be near.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll be in the Cherry Grove area over Labor Day weekend. Hoping to watch on the beach via ESPN or ACC app.

Depending on where you are, my first choice would be outer banks brewing station in kill devil hills. Its pretty equivalent to most sports bars with the side bonus of having pretty decent in-house brews. There's one long bar with multiple tvs and I'm sure they'd be happy to put the game on for you.

He's no good to me dead.

Yes, go to Outer Banks Brewing Station and get the Pant-a-Nator. It's delicious

^^^This. I've spent WAY too much time and money there.

I highly doubt that's possible.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Good point.

It was my favorite spot whenever I went down to my aunt's cottage. Between OBBS and walks to the Avalon pier in the morning (y'know, when you can cross the main drag on foot and not get killed) there are a lot of fond memories of the OBX.

I saw you may be able to stream it on ESPN3 if you have an account

Roku Streaming stick/Watch ESPN app

EVERYTHING the ACC puts out will be available to stream now on the watch ESPN app. If you need an account, I've heard Slingtv is worth the investment just for football season.

I don't know how it's gonna work with the new media deal, but I found better luck streaming it through the ACC website and app instead of ESPN3. Since the ACC Network has so many TV affiliates (which leads to the ESPN3 blackout), I really have no idea where one actually would watch it on ESPN3.

As soon as I find a link from the ACC about the affiliates for week 1, I'll be posting it here. The link that Hokie Fireman posted is a good place to start, but occasionally a game will get bumped to another station due to prior programming commitments. For instance, in Richmond, the ACC Network was on the Fox station for years, but last year, about half of them ended up on the CW. This year, we're starting out on the CW, so it might just stay there. (Which makes more sense, as the local CW station is owned by Raycom, and doesn't have any other football commitments.)

According to TitanTV.com, based on the zip code of 27943, it looks like the game will be on the CW station down there (channel 9.2). It also gives an option of the Norfolk/Newport News based stations, so WGNT 27.1 might be an option.

The ACC Network has an app that streams live ACC games?

Check out this link. I have not tried any of these apps but they say they have live streaming of games - we'll see.

ACC Mobile Apps

Yep it does, or at least it did last season. I was able to get around the ESPN3 blackout for the BC game that way.

I live in the OBX, if I recall correctly from last year, Raycom airs on WGNT down here, so check the listings of your rental. Be warned though, if your rental has Dish Network, WGNT is blacked out due to their dispute.

If you are looking to go out for the game, Bernie's usually has a good amount of games on, as does BK Shuckers and Longboards both in Kitty Hawk, Mama Kwan's in KDH (not to mention the best fish tacos on the beach!)

edit: WGNT, CW and CBS are all blacked out on Dish

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Bernie's also has great BBQ chicken pizza among other things and the staff has always been friendly, summer or off season, whenever I have gone.

stick it in, stick it in, stick it in!

+1 for Mama Kwan's fish tacos

If Barefoot Bernies has the ACC Network, that would be my first choice. Make sure they don't use Dish Network.

I am not a huge fan of OBBS. Best bet- take a gotcha plug and a spinning rod out to Avalon Pier. Catch a cooler full of spanish mackerel. Take them home, clean them, and put them in some lemon pepper marinade. Go watch the game. Come back and make some banging fish tacos.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

So it'll take you about 7 hours and you may have to pay for parking and attendance, but this link should help you find a great place to watch the game.

I just realized there is no South Bend ACC network affiliate nor one near by, which is weird. I know NBC does ND football, but they're still in most ACC sports. Like, what do they do for Basketball?

Side note I guess I can use espn3 for all games since the Fort Wayne, IN area shouldn't be blacked out due to the ACC network.

I'm probably going to be down there during the game as well and was thinking about taking an antenna with me, but from the coverage maps it doesn't look promising.

stick it in, stick it in, stick it in!

You can absolutely forget picking up the stations from Greenville & Tidewater over-the-air down here (KDH/NH/KH). Too far over the horizon.

Cable packages & DirecTV will have the stations that carry ACC Network.

If you're really looking for a bar to watch the games, I'd give the nod to (in order) Barefoot Bernies, Mama Kwan's, Bonzer Shack (local favorite - outdoor ping-pong), and OBBS (great beer but the viewing experience isn't necessarily great). A wildcard is Captain George's - great bar & TV setup for watching games, but I don't think they are open that early.

Depending on their game time, Barefoot Bernies WILL be filled with ECU fans.

I believe OBX carries the Norfolk/ Va Beach local channels so you should be able to pick up the affiliate down there (WGNT channel 27) using either an antenna or the cable company. Not sure about the satellite companies.

I would guess that the Norfolk affiliate will carry the VT regardless of any other ACC games scheduled at the same time.

I would guess that the Norfolk affiliate will carry the VT regardless of any other ACC games scheduled at the same time.

That's not how it works.

The ACC Network, as it currently exists courtesy of Raycom, is just a syndicated broadcast of a football game. Occasionally, they will air two games at the same time, splitting the affiliates. But for the first three weeks, there are no such split broadcasts. If a local affiliate is airing the ACC Network game, they are airing the game that Raycom is providing them. Otherwise, they're not airing anything.

I lived in Nags Head for 2 years. I would say if you want the place that will most likely have the game on:

BK Shuckers
Longboards
Bernies may have the game on I know the owners are Steelers fans, I think they were Tech fans but for some reason I have a recollection that they are ECU leaning
- Those are all Kitty Hawk around mile post 2-5ish

A few other suggestions that might have the game but I would call or run by and check first
KDH
Outer Banks Brewing is really good
Mama Kwans (it might be over the line into Nags Head technically, I cant remember) their food is really good and it small
Bonzer Shack (used to be Mexicali) is my personal favorite, but they might not have the game on but for a 'tailgating' experience id say theyd be close to the top

Down in southern nags head
Mulligans has a really cool outdoor roof bar but I dont know if theyll have the game.

I lived there for 4 years. They carry the Norfolk stations and also some stations out of Greensville. I never had a problem watching Hokie games and it was great during the NFL seasom because there were two different CBS stations which ment more games to choose from.

If you happen to want to take a trip down to Ocracoke, I lived on Slusher Hall my freshman year with the son of the owner of the Jolly Roger pub/marina/hotel. He transferred to UNC-W after freshman year but he might still have a viewing interest.

Wherever you decide to go, walk in the day before and negotiate your game. See if the barfolk can assure you not only that they get the game on their feeds, but that they'd be willing to set aside a viewing space for you. I have found that a ten spot can cement relationships, even where there is limited tv viewing space. On game day, let them know you're in it for the entire game, and then make sure you spend enough money that they don't resent your hogging a table for three and a half hours, and then tip the hell out of them so they know that Hokies are good to have around on game day. This approach has worked for me even in Western states where they don't know Va Tech from Vermont. In the OBX, though, I suspect you will soon be surrounded by Hokies and a good time will be had by all...except those unfortunate Flamers who may be around.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Also, wherever you decide to view, let me know, I've got Dish, so I won't be viewing from home. Always down to watch a game with a fellow Hokie!

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Sounds like I'll be trying either Bernies or OBX Brewing Station based on feedback. Lemme know if you find a spot!

Let's Go...

I'm so fucking confused! I don't think the 3 has ever blocked me in Richmond.

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

I'll be boarding my cruise ship in Miami, guess I should be able to get ESPN3 if I'm not mistaken

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

This board makes me sad. It has been a very long 8 years since I was in the Outer Banks. My how it goes by in a blink.

in Fuller we trust

We'll be at Rosemary Beach, FL (30A area) for the weekend. I'm counting on finding a quiet corner and ESPN3 streaming.
