Evening Report from Hokiesports

BLACKSBURG Here are five observations from Wednesdays practice:
Tech freshman Kendall Fuller continues to have a good camp. He picked off a Mark Leal pass in the pass skeleton drill, though to be fair, it was tough to tell whether Leal made a poor throw or the receiver ran the wrong route. Nonetheless, Fuller made the play and has been working with the first team. If the season started today, hed probably be the starter at field cornerback.
Former Tech running back Kevin Jones has been at the past two practices, and its been interesting to watch him interact with Techs running backs, offering his insight in certain situation. Jones, who is in town working toward his degree (he graduates next May), is a great resource for young guys like Trey Edmunds, J.C. Coleman and Joel Caleb.
Speaking of Coleman, he got rolled upon in the middle drill and sprained both of his ankles. That left Caleb getting a lot of reps, and Caleb continues to look more and more natural as a tailback. He made several nice cuts on running plays and displays good vision and instinct. But he still needs to work on his blitz pickups. On one play late in the practice, cornerback Donovan Riley came on a blitz and got past Caleb. The quarterback (not sure which one) had rolled to his left and gotten rid of the ball, but had he stayed in the pocket, Riley might have gotten a sack. Pass protection is easily the biggest challenge for young running backs.
Techs tight ends had a good practice, with Ryan Malleck making a big play down the middle in a pass skeleton drill and both Zack McCray and Duan Perez-Means coming up with several catches. This group got better in the spring and carried it over, and it wouldnt be a surprise if they didnt play a big role in Techs offense this season.
David Wang (ankle) wore a blue jersey because of his injury and didnt participate much in Wednesdays practice. Caleb Farris worked at center with the first team, while Matt Arkema worked at center with the second team. Arkema struggled with a couple of snaps, which threw off those particular plays.

Some things never seem to change in Fall Camp. Hope J.C. is back to full health soon.
hope Coleman is ok and makes a fast recovery.
Good to hear the TEs are making some plays. Just hoping to hear the WRs have sticky fingers next
Maybe KJ is seeing a new job possibility after he graduates?
Looks like we have a gimpy wang
At least you didn't say limpy
Stupid phone! I appreciate a good wang joke as much as the next guy. My bad for the downvote
Man, I can tell ya that nothing stings worse than a sore Wang.
Our last Wang was bigger.
Nothing is as good as your first Wang.
Made me feel better too.
usually in these cases, wang will swell.
This makes me giddy. Nothing better than getting input from one of the best to put on the O&M. Keep bringing back that #ALLMAROONEVERYTHING attitude.
Hopefully the #ALLMAROONEVERYTHING attitude can help Wang's softness and get him to harden up a bit.
Every Wang should be big.
Well there's that saying about horses...am I right HorseOnATreadmill?
Yes, there is a saying.
Oh really?? Hmmm. Never heard of such......
That's what happens when you try and play with a soft Wang
Great..Grand. Wonderful..
Starting 5 will be those who make it past fall camp.
as much as this sucks I couldn't resist...
Do we have any prognosis on JC? Timetable? Severity?
Reports are, that after some icing and massage, the Wang swelling has gone down....
High ankle sprains are bad. Usually take 6-8 weeks to fully recover, and they severely inhibit the person's ability to plant & cut.
Considering high ankle sprains are usually a serious injury for basketball players....I have to imagine it's 2x worse for a football player
Paging Justin Hamilton. This really is starting to feel like 2004.
Definitely, I said that a while ago, don't know if it was on here though. I was saying it because of playing the #1 "powerhouse dynasty" team and coming off a bad season. Everyone writing us off this year like they did back in '04. We also don't really have that true star player(s) (Kevin Jones & DHall left early). I would count Logan, but not many outside of Hokie fans think he'll come through. All these injuries suck, but it's something about these situations that make Tech teams come together and have a great season.
Didn't have anyone proven at TB last time we played bama and that gave us Rmfw. Never know who is gonna step up and just be a gamer and to quote bud foster "play his balls off"
Not to nitpick but I believe Bud said "nuts". "Played his nuts off".
Just saw a Hokie Sports article via Bleacher Report that RVD is out for season. SAY IT AIN'T SO!
How does this shuffle our lineup this time?
so i saw an espn headline, both of VTs starting RBs out....i was like what?! so i got on and it was gregory and coleman, as much as i love coleman edmunds was totally the favorite anyway, screw you giraffe and espn
Haha yea mama giraffe is going to start saying Tech has lost 3 starting QB's! Then be very disappointed when she finds Trey Edmunds at the end of that list.
