Per BeamerBall: Wyatt Teller moving to Offensive Tackle

Per twitter.com/Beamer_Ball

"Coach Beamer appreciates Wyatt Teller's unselfish offer to move to OT. Truly a team player. Teller will work with Coach Grimes today."

As I have noted frequently, Wyatt Teller's film as a high school offensive lineman was incredibly impressive. With his footwork, reach, and motor, he could be a first round NFL caliber left tackle. Technique will take some time as he has focused on being an defensive end, but he really could be a special player as a tackle. I feel his upside is better than any of the 2014 recruits who have verbally committed to the Hokies.

So how long have you had this drafted and sitting in your back pocket French?

As someone mentioned on another thread, this probably means bad news about Shuman.

are we doing boners?

To paraphrase hokiefan4life,

I'm not denying it my boner that Teller at offensive line wasn't important or necessary to win games.

Denying your boner is NEVER a good thing. Just ask Wang.

my drink nearly came out of my nose... pure gold

the most ironic thing is that hokiefan4life is probably right about everything he said... now if we could just decipher what it actually meant

ps. hokiefan4life, please keep writing

Very true on all points. That and he must text "pussy" and "boner" an awful lot. God I miss college.

Sounds like a job for Snap Chat!

unselfish and appreciated for sure but he sees the depth in front of him at dt and the lack of depth at ot. kid is motivated to get on the field and help the team. i hope this works out for him.

will it be a permanent move?

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

The downside of course means we probably going to hear bad news about Mark Shuman. I am not happy about that because he was going to cover up some of the depth issues thanks to his ability to play multiple positions.

As for Teller, as promising a prospect as he is on defensive line, he never fit the prototype for what VT looks for in defensive linemen, especially since around 2004. Foster and Wiles have utilized relatively short defensive tackles who excel at slanting and maintaining gap fits to allow linebackers to make plays. Teller in a 4-3 one gap scheme where he needs to get upfield and create chaos would be a star, but in this scheme he would need to refine his skill set and with five other defensive tackles in place who already fit the Wiles mold (plus the potential of Ricky Walker and Derrick Nnadi on the way) he could be of greater value elsewhere.

Then, when you watch him as a fast moving run blocker on the edge as a TE/tackle, he just eats up guys with contain responsibility. His reach and footwork gets him into position, and his natural strength and work ethic allows him to punish those guys in space. He is a perfect fit.

Admittedly, I have no idea about his pass blocking technique. That will take time. But again, he has reach and feet that you just can not teach. It will come.

I annoit Teller "Pancake Patterson." Cause he flattens fools.

As an old O lineman, I enjoy and appreciate the pancakes...it makes me happy and I feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I love this. It's like he believes that every defender he blocks has personally wronged him in some way. Seems like in every clip, the victim is either on his back or removed from the frame.

Reminds me of the blindside when he carries that guy to the fence...geez

Its going to be tough for him to learn everything in the next week, but from the sounds of thing not many of the other oline options have learned much at all the first couple weeks.

Why has nobody suggested this before???!!!! 1!!

I got the sarcasm, I was just unaware that one needed a reason to bring French into the conversation.

Great move for the future and like that he's coming into being an OT really as a blank slate to be molded by Grimes. Feel like he fits the mold of what Grimes was recruiting for and I'm rooting for him to have a great redshirt year. Instead of a #FAB5 there's the #PYSCHO6? (I dunno, just felt right)

It's definitely not something that's going to help in a game this year though. Hope people aren't counting on him to help #BEATBAMA this year, if he has a fantastic redshirt year he could possibly help #BEATtOSU

With McLaughlin and Teller, plus the Fab5, we might as well dub them the Elite 8.

I support Logan Thomas and make no apologies for it.

I am not sure if they can afford to redshirt him. At the very least, they will dress him every game and only use him if there is an injury ala Sean Glennon years ago.

You are 100% right that this is terrific if it is a long term move. The one weakness of the fab five is the lack of a true natural top end prospect at left tackle. McLaughlin long term I think will move to right tackle IF a left tackle emerges. Mitchell and Taylor are both more likely to be RT's or move inside. Teller can be that lynchpin.

This year, I expect that they ease him in at right tackle first as he learns how to be a college pass blocker. But, if this move lasts beyond today, he will be on travel squad.

Is it possible that we see Teller in the Alabama game? Maybe as a starter, what with all of the injuries in practice?

With way injuries are going you might be right but I sure am hoping he could get a RS year.

11 scholarship lineman over 240lbs currently on the roster w/ 2 injured OTs. Some of current OL don't fit mold of what Grimes wants either. If only the firing of Newsome would've happened earlier.

Waiting until the bowl game was a brutally bad choice

slight correction: #BEATaOSU

They lost the "the" when they lost to Purdue two years ago, and had to go to overtime to beat them this past year. Purdue.

Although perhaps in the interest of full disclosure, I should admit I'm a Michigan student.

Not going to find any love for M*ch*gan here

Firsttime I visited, I wore my Hokies United shirt on the Diag and whenever someone looked at me funny I yelled "IT WAS A CATCH!"

I wear my Hokie stuff all the time here. No one seems to care. I think you are more likely to see more apparel from other schools combined than tOSU on a daily basis. It feels like highschool again in that regard.

Correction they lost the the when they became pretentious dbags. The Ohio state university. No shit is there another Ohio st. Sorry my Ohio state hate came out. I will get more pleasure out of beating them then anyone else

I'm a Penn State student. You coming to State College for the game this year?

So you're really a NittanyLionOnAHorseOnATreadmill?

"Exit light..."

No way. My treadmill is in State College but my heart is in Blacksburg.

+1 for that. Many of us may have physically left Blacksburg, but that's where our hearts and souls will always live.

"Exit light..."

I swear I could move back to Blacksburg and live there permanently.

Well at least this move to offense allows him to play WHIP too..

Time for French to change pants again...

per hokiesports.com:

Despite lacking experience, Teller held his own in Thursdays practice, seeing most of his action against Dadi Nicolas and Matt Roth.

If Teller is holding his own against Dadi on day one, French may be onto something with this move.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

I feel like French has a gift of Prophecy. Dadi is a beast and for him to hang with him on day one is bananas. You never know, he could be pushing Mclaughlin for that spot. It seems like Grimes type of guy.
