Weekly Weather Report a new era

Well its that time of the year again! Football season is upon us which means its time for me to brush off the forecasting rust and give you guys a write-up and a short weather lesson week in and week out. What better way to start than by keeping tabs on a freakin hurricane?! I've been keeping an eye on what is now being called tropical depression Hermine for a good time now.

Side note when you google Hermine, our favorite first lady pops up!

...and this thing, i have no idea what the connection is

Originally the storm looked as though it would develop VIOLENTLY in the gulf, with the Euro going out on a limb and saying it would balloon up to a category 4 or 5 and slam into New Orleans much like Katrina....thankfully that didn't happen and I didnt jump the gun on the forecast. The wind shear in the gulf is just to high to get it to anything to bad at the moment. However its still a very dangerous system that's looking like its going to drop a lot of rainfall not just on Florida but along the entire east coast at the moment.

THATS A REEEEEEALLY CLOSE CALL

The track the storm is currently on has it battering the eastern coast of the US including Virginia and barrrely missing Blacksburg, however I do not think this is the case. A few of the models have had it zeroed in to track west for about a day now, and the others are starting to following suite meaning Roanoke/Blacksburg is probably going to get hammered. How hammered is another story however. There are basically two cases I've narrowed it down to based on current observations that will be the difference between "drinking 3 rails in 2 hours hammered" and "spreading 4 rails out over the course of an entire evening hammered" both really suck and will still leave us in a bad place afterwards.

straight delicious liquid poison

First lets discuss the current layout of what could impact these two scenarios. Really the big thing to keep an eye on is a trough currently around the midwest (the northern portion IE Michigan Canada Wisconsin region) as that makes its way across the US one thing to really keep an eye on is how quickly it moves. This is the primary disagreement between a lot of the models right now and could steer the storm further west or east as well as strengthening it (See Superstorm Sandy)

I'm going on a limb here and straying a little bit away from my usual guns. The GFS and Canadian models are drawing on similar conclucsions and seem to be roping the euro in with it. They both have nearly identical upper level trough positioning (as mentioned above). The canadian model is beefing up that trough a little more than the GFS. This basically means that should the system stray west a little bit, then the warm core seclusion will occur in the eastern part of Virginia (basically where the most intense and mature part of the storm is) as it interacts with the trough

an image of warm core seclusion note the warm core in the last image...its the most mature part of the low

The current front is south enough that it could start to interact with the system in the next day or so (leading to a really strong warm core seclusion like what happened with Sandy) or if it heads west, it secludes sooner but also loads more rainfall...

So back to my original analogy... case 3 rails in 2 hours the storm heads west and secludes quickly, leading to a direct hit to the Roanoke area. In case 4 rails over the course of the night, the storm tracks more eastward and secludes later thus leading to a more drawn out event. Regardless, I'm going to disagree with the NWS current forecast, based on current model output data and current conditions. I believe its going to rain A LOT and the NWS will jump on board in the next day or so

So what the hell does this mean for the game? well...on one hand we do have a good history playing in hurricanes

take that a&m

on the other hand we have a brand new head coach whose bringing in a new offense. This game is going to be SLOPPY which means this game is going to be won on the ground. Dont expect a lot of good QB play, and I really hope we get an early lead and can just run our way out of the game. Rainy games like this are a really good way to ruin a players career on a hard cut (see RGIII). As far as advantages go between offense and defense I've always kind of split it into three categories. In light rain i think its a wash between the two units. In moderate rain I think it plays into the offenses hands, receivers can still catch the ball mildly well and defenders have a harder time reacting to the slick ground (slipping more often). In heavy rain the advantage is flipped in the defenses favors, QBs have a difficult time gripping the ball let alone throwing it and receivers will struggle to catch the ball, the offense thus has to become one dimensional playing right into the defenses hands.

Liberty has a rather balanced attack and runs a very similar offense to our own. Hopefully our defense can take advantage of this familiarity and with better athletes should be able to shut them down. While liberty has the same advantage, they dont have quite the same athletes that we do to take advantage. Likewise I think fuente isn't going to take this game lightly as its his first game ever so we wont see any other upsets that shall not be mentioned any further. The only thing that worries me is the fact that they have a duel threat qb and our defenses woes against duel threat guys has been noted previously.

on offense i expect a healthy dosage of running and read optioning and to grind out enough points to win a sloppy weird game.

fond rainy game football memories

Final predictions (yes I'm doing this again)

VT - 27
LU - 10
RAIN - LOTS
WIND - LOTS
CLOUDS - LOTS

Hope I'm wrong about the forecast for everybodys sake and we survive and move on to Bristol

GO HOKIES!!!

PS I havent forgotten about the Madden Julian Oscillation write-up just couldn't fit it in this week

Overall I still expect us to win but I expect this to be sloppier than usual

give it another day or so and it could switch up a tad, I doubt it will but it wouldnt be the first time I'd be wrong. Especially with tropical cyclones, so many things can impact its movement so they're usually kinda tricky

I'm confused. Are you saying this Saturday we could have a shit show of a game with excessive rain and wind? Just out of curiosity, why aren't the typical weather websites calling for this? Don't doubt you, as you have hit more nails on the head than most, just wondering why it wasn't on the radar (literally) of other outlets. Most other sites are saying 12mph max winds and 20% chance of rain in the morning. Seems like a pretty big discrepancy.

Thanks again for the detailed forecasts. Looking forward to January and February!

Yeah its going to be a complete shit show if im right. Basically a lot of the weather services are holding off until the models all totally zero in. It's hard to be totally positive this early but I wanted to let the threat be known far enough out so people could prepare.

If you look at the current track of the storm its heading right into richmond, in spite of that the national weather service only has a 40% chance of rain in richmond, this is because should the bullseye shift west richmond might get missed, likewise if it shifts east it could miss us. Just based on current observations and whats up with the models I just dont forsee that happening and I see it shifting west. Im going to keep this thread running until gameday in case something happens

Basically the weather service cant jump on board until theyre absolutely positive because people panic, and if theyre wrong people get pissed off. The reason the sandy storm was called so far ahead of time was because of the increased activity of weather balloons just to help the models (sandy was a much more severe instance) with increased data input for the models, they became accurate much quicker

Awesome. Thanks for the explanation. Appreciate you not only taking the time to explain but also not getting your feathers ruffled when someone questions your forecast. I'll definitely be prepared for anything now, and before reading your post I would not have thought twice about it. Thanks again!

Of course! Just keep an eye on it!

I'm so sad because I'm supposed to be spending the weekend in Cherry Grove with family that I rarely see and my plan was to watch the game on the beach with my iPad and bluetooth speaker.

the florida people are saying we get to leave for Blacksburg a day earlier because no work tomorrow whoohooo!!!

I remember a game in the 90s, can't for the life of me get it pinned down, but it was cold as a titches witty, forecast to be as such, and windy to boot. There were several coeds sitting nearby in sweatshirts and jeans, sneakers, and no hats or gloves. Me, I'm sporting two pairs of long johns, wool pants, two pairs of socks with Goretex boots. On top, silk top and long john shirt, a wool shirt, a wool sweater and a down vest under a Goretex mountain parka. Glove liners with ski gloves and a fleece lined Goretex flap eared hat that completed the ensemble. Night game. By the third quarter, I was shedding clothes and loaning it out to the poor unprepared students. Don't know if it made an impression, but I do remember a lot of thankful hugs and promises, like I was daddy, that they wouldn't make that same mistake again, and I also remember that we won the game. Now which game? No matter, be prepared for the worst and you'll not be miserable. Lane can dish up some seriously uncomfortable conditions.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

I don't envy the job of meteorologists. As an example, my weather forecast yesterday went from 10% chance of rain to 90% chance over a matter of about 4 hours (hit 90% just as you posted this). Now, it's at 20%.

For Richmond to get missed wouldn't that have to shift pretty far west ... as in the center of the storm would have to pass well north and west of Blacksburg?

I think they held the chances at 40% in Richmond in case it stays closer to the coastline. From what I've read there's going to be a pretty sharp cutoff in precipitation on the western side (which is good for the forecast in Blacksburg).

You know more about weather than any other human I know. But I'm just going to go ahead and pretend I didn't read this.

Definitely watching this closer now. Thanks for coming back with another season of forecasts, although I didn't expect any off weather until October at the earliest.

As a Celtic-American, aka pasty-ass mofo, I couldn't love this forecast more for an early season noon-thirtier. Nothing better than not having to worry about sweating my ass off and getting baked.

As someone who went to the 2003 Texas A&M game in a hurricane, got soaked in 2009 against Miami, and endured the horrific 2007 BC game in sub-freezing temperatures and rain, I say with the greatest love and respect:

"Exit light..."

I will take just about anything over the UNC game in 2011 I think? That was some cold stuff. We were slicing open Taun-Tauns trying to stay warm at that game.

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

coldest game I've been to was Duke 2008. I think at kickoff the temperature was just above 30 but by the time the game ended it was in the single digits. 20s

I checked...didn't drop down, officially, as low as I recall. But it was friggin cold

I brought my 70 year old parents to that Duke game. I was informed after no more games for them after Oct 15th.

Yeah, I had to miss that one because I was away at a conference. I gave my ticket to my sister and she and my wife went to the game. They were both miserable.

"Exit light..."

My dad is English and he played rugby growing up (apparently he was pretty good, too) and so he has never really understood or liked American Football. I convinced him to come down for a game and that was the one we picked. So my dad and I were sitting together in South Endzone for the only football game he's been to and it was miserably cold and the actual game itself was a bit of a snooze-fest. Needless to say, my dad has not been back to a football game since.

Onward and upward

Gave my ticket to my younger brother because I was sick. He froze and enjoyed the hell out of it.

My worst weather experience at Lane was a Thursday night game. We took a half day off and raced to the stadium for the game. Traffic was so bad we had no time to tailgate, and chugged 1 beer before heading to our seats (5Q in the middle East - you know, the ones with the permanent backrests). Right when we were ready for kick off the skies opened up and poured. Then lightning struck right next to the stadium (I think it hit a car), and everyone was asked to evacuate the stadium. Being in a 10 way tie for the farthest people in the stadium from an exit, we spent about 20 minutes in unbelievable rain before crowding in under the stadium, where it was too tight to move. Then they announced the game was cancelled. 30 some minutes of hiking through the rain and we were back to the car in a non-moving parking lot. The rain also caused a wreck somewhere on the way home, so we did not get back until about 2 AM, and id not even get to watch us play. That SUCKED.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

GT right? The famous lightning-struck-lee-corsos-car game

Still refuse to call it a game., but that is who we supposed to play. You at least got to see a great game for braving the rain for the LSU tropical storm game.

Ha, I'm just giving you grief. My wife is from Florida. Anything below 70 is arctic to her. She looked at the forecast recently and asked me, "why is it winter already?" Kid you not, she'll be in a parka when it's 60 outside.

I'm not that bad born and raised in VA and spent 8 years in Ohio. But I'm tired of winter getting here so fast.

the 2007 BC debacle never got below 50 degrees. So the "sub-freezing temperatures" part of your statement is hyperbole...but it rained like hell..I got soaked in that game too. It sucked. A lot.

I didn't even realize it was raining the first 56 minutes of that game.

All I know is there is an irreversible cold, deep within my heart, that radiates to this day. Weather be damned.

Right on, brother! I'm gonna have to brag here and mention that I was at the Texas A&M hurricane game, The Boston College Matty Ice debacle in the rain, Duke AND UNC 2008, the JMU fart into a thunderstorm, and UVA 2012. I only wish I had been at that Marshall game.

I'm sure some long time season ticket holders were at all of those too, and for every terrible weather game there have been 3 with sunny skies and warm to hot temps. Remember kids, HATE KEEPS YOU WARM.

Worst weather games I ever attended in Lane

2003 Texas A&M - the harder it rained, the louder we got. We were the only sporting event on the East coast that played that day, literally everything else was canceled. ESPN loved us for that.
2009 Miami - That was a fun game
2008 Duke - Cold, cold, and colder. Didn't help that our offense played like shit the entire time, too... Wasn't much to cheer for but we won.
2002 Pitt - Wasn't so much the brutal cold, but the heavy winds combined with it. And of course Larry Fitzgerald beating the piss out of our DBs didn't make the experience any better.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

2009 Miami is my favorite experience in Lane. I had band music spread all around the suite for a week after that one, trying to let it dry.

Thanks Eshiben! I almost posted an APB for Eshiben post last night right before you put this up.

On a related note, it looks like some of the models are tracking Hermine further east, which as of now, leaves a forecast for a Hi of 72, Mostly Sunny, with light winds in Blacksburg on Saturday....

Hi of 72?! That may actually be a good reason that I can finally open a 'fall seasonal' craft beer....

And then again, I'm just a Skywarn Weather Spotter, and could be way wrong too - I'll let the real meterologist let the forecast roll today.

Did you say hi of 72? That's winter temps down here, I'm going to need a heavy jacket.

I guess to the ECU fans, when it rains it pours....

VA Beach?

Well hot damn that was a big 180 from last night, looks like despite my best efforts i still jumped the gun a little bit. The trough i was hyping up earlier in the forecast is giving way to a ridge thats developed actually about 30 miles east of my current spot. The trough didnt develop quite like i was expecting and this high is going to block off the soon to be hurricane and push it out wide. Now this is where things get interesting and kind of hilarious if I stick to the euro. The euro has the storm getting stuck right off shore after passing through north carolina and nailing virginia beach. It literally just sits there, trapped by the high pressure system, for about 4 days right off shore before breaking off and heading into the atlantic. However I'm more on team GFS which has it breaking off into the atlantic after a day or so. Regardless, virginia beach you're in for a rough outing lots of rain coming, I whiffed on my forecast and am more than happy to admit it because you guys are in for a beautiful game now!

High - 75
Low - 60
Precip - nada
Wind - little to none (gusts around 5)
Cloud Cover - partly cloudy

also for future reference if you guys wanna play around with the model data here you go

http://www.aos.wisc.edu/weather/wx_models/gfs_ecmwf_namer_00UTC.shtml

thats a side by side view of the gfs and the euro where the gfs is on the left and the euro is on the right.

the hpa is hectopascals and is basically how we measure height, the lower the hpa the higher in altitude we are. check out the surface view on the euro and watch the storm (its the giant low that passes through virginia beach) and watch it hover offshore for what seems like ever
