Tenn. will be playing their ass off next week one way or the other. If you can't get juiced to play in front of 150k, then you just don't belong on the field at this level. So I don't see Tenn. being any more or less of a test even if somehow they got embarrassed by App. tonight. As said I would love to see them tested a bit so maybe they are forced to show their hand a bit.

"wondering" & "worrying" are not the same thing. In any event, I love what the kid is all about and I'm pulling for him! However, that position is the biggest question mark on the D.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I really think from the reports I have heard from Bud and other coaches in print that Motu is primed to have a Warrenesque season. The DLine will do a better job of keeping the linemen off him and his burst to the ball will be put to good use.

soo keep breaking down and slide on his belly until colliding with the returner's legs
or maybe he could have eased up off the full sprint toward the vulnerable return man that he wanted to punish with a vicious hit because his team is stinking up their home opener.

Edit: Actually never mind. I think he will get to play next week. When ejected during the 2nd half you miss the rest of the half and 1st half of the next week. Since this is the first half I assume it's just the rest of the game.

Tennessee's best LB, Jalen Reeves-Maybin, just ejected for targeting. Lucky for Vols it's the first half or he'd miss first half in Bristol.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Musberger just blamed the return guy from App St for the targeting call on Tenn because he didn't call for a fair catch. Wow. The call itself is a tough one because the Tenn guy clearly didn't mean to go high but the rule is the rule
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Regardless of aiming high or low, he still put his head down to strike with the crown of the helmet. Imagine that impact's effect on the returner's knees.

The UT coaches do not appear to really trust strange looking head guy to throw down the field, even against soft freshman coverage, and from what I have seen probably with good reason. I've gone from hoping he gets hurt enough to not play next week to hoping he is slightly slowed with an ankle sprain.

If we win we will hear excuses whether they have a reason for them or not. Period. Think of them as a band-aids on the gaping wounds we have inflicted on their soles and give them LOLUVA fan level pity.

I know it's wayyyyy early on, but if Tennessee wins anything under 9 games this season you know that Butch Jones seat will be getting warm. He has recruited very well, but if results don't show soon we all know how their fanbase will turn on him in a second.

Only watched this last TD drive, but can't help to notice some sudden similarities between App State's offense and Fuente. Lot of misdirection/run options and getting the receivers, rbs, and qbs involved in the run game. Impressive drive there.

Guys, c'mon. We know Butch is just keeping it close to throw us off next weekend. /s
In all seriousness, props to App State. I think after this weekend, people will realize that UT is not unstoppable, and VT is better than you thought. Hoping for a classic in Bristol.

I saw the stat where Dobbs was like 1-13 on passes of 30 or more yards last season. Hasn't looked that great on his first couple long passes, even under 30 yards..... thats kinda reassuring to potentially not have to worry about the long ball

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if UT brings it back solely on skill and the fact that their skill/depth should be about outlast Appy, but I'm hoping for something like a 27-25 win so they keep their ranking, and then Ekanem, Mihota, and future Piesman Settle just blow up their O-line and any hope they had going forward.

Way this game is going if App State somehow scores one more TD it is over, however, I see Tennessee get a TD tie it then late in the 4th score one more to close it out. 20-13 Tennessee wins but scratches head for answers
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Ha I was too! Educated guess watching the game for 2 1/2 quarters. For the good guys, hard to say we don't know what our team looks like. Last night just seemed like Tennessee had no other answer then hand-off's and a few pass plays. Kinda looked like our old playing card.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I don't think Tennessee is bad. But they are crazy one-dimensional. Load the box and make Dobbs beat you consistently with his arm. Odds are he won't.
Edit: As soon as I post this he makes a good deep throw. Still, I think you take your chances. If you can get pressure, he makes really bad decisions.

I suppose the good news for us is they can't keep everything vanilla and avoid putting stuff on film for bristol. Cause they apparently need it all to get past app st.
I see why they moved this game to Thursday
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Everyone is making a HUGE assumption that UT must be really bad, because, well, Appy St is beating them.
Serious Question - anyone consider that Appy maybe is pretty decent and showed up more prepared and more fired up to play this one?
Edit -- to add to this, I don't automatically assume our front 7 on D shows up and plays at the level Appy has tonight. I hope we do. But I give Appy's D some serious credit on this game.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Offensive line has been very suspect. App state has gotten pressure on Dobbs/Hurd/Kamara all night. Run game didn't look super imposing.
Dobbs: athletic and dangerous. But his arm is a YUGE liability. Should've had a pick or two more tonight.
Hurd and Kamara: athletic but this line is literally holding the whole offense back. Hurd IMO too lanky/tall for half back. Should be used more as a WR.
Defense: stout, but prone to mistakes. D-Line for the most part has swallowed Apps in pass pro, solid run blocking, yet the misdirection from App has lead to some big conversions.
Special teams: two HUGE gaffes; big concern, other than a decent post-ht return.
French - give us your thoughts. Mine suck.

Kid was on an island and had the chance to at least knock that down. Wasn't a bad throw, but it wasn't a great one either.
Edit: dude turned his head just as the ball was going into Malone's arms. Too late.

"Tenn.Suddenly in control" just like they were when it was 0 to 0. Must Burger -The more I have to listen to the broadcast A's the more I want App State to pull off the upset.

Oh. Count on it. But I think he's containable. Bud has does well against QBs that are known for running. It's the ones you don't expect to take off that bug us so much. Plus, I think we stack the box and force them to throw the ball.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I hate this because it gives me way too much hope for Bristol. I was on the Tenn wins by 10 for awhile now. But after tonight I my heart keeps saying VT win but I don't want to get too into that hope.

Networking is crucial for success in today's world. Before I walked off the field I thought, "What would Frank Beamer do?" Long story short, I only have three facial expressions so I thought I should go over and tell them how well they played instead of doing this on camera after eeking out a close game.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
App state is the real deal. They went 11-2 last year, and one of the two was the Nat'l Champ runner-up. They got a lot back from last year, and their front seven on D is a goon squad. They aren't afraid of anybody. Miami has to go up to Boone this year. They might be regretting that decision.
Besides, it was obvious UT thought ASU was going to lay down. Especially in the first half. And... Butch Jones was stubborn. He didn't show hardly any of his cards on offense. That was a very vanilla game plan.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
except some of the issues werent play calling, their offensive line looked meh at best and their defense lacked discipline. they over committed so hard on those jet sweeps i hope fuente saw that. That and dobbs didnt make good decisions at all, lots of sloppy plays
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Yeah. I've said it before- Liberty is well coached and they get decent talent. Don't think we'll get in a Dog fight with them, but in college football anything is possible. Don't over look any team.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
This is the outcome I wanted, but man, I wanted to have some fun on social media tonight. I had planned to write "feels like 98" to mock everyone in Bristol buying those shirts.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
The UT O-Line definitely looks suspect and Dobbs makes some dumb decisions with pressure in his face. Here's to hoping our defense can exceed what App State did on D tonight. Our O definitely has weapons in the passing game compared to App State, so I think we should do a WHOLE lot more in the air than what they did. First things first though, beat Liberty!!
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
this reminds me of when we played at Ohio St two years ago... We were all looking forward to week 2, playing a top 10 team, every almost every one picking OSU to win and then Ohio State struggled in their first game (vs. navy) and we all started getting more confidence in our chances of actually winning.
But first things first, take care of Liberty, and by that, I mean bring back the late 90's/early 2000's scores and hang a 63-0 on them.... GO HOKIES!

UT's near loss to Appy State is a good news/bad news situation for the Hokies, it seems:
1) good news: UT is not nearly as good as their lofty preseason ranking, but
2) bad news: this near loss will make it easy for Butch Jones to light a fire under 'em before the Battle at Bristol
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Does anyone see this setting up to have strong similarities to how the Ohio State game started to pan out a week before. Navy gave OSU fits due to offensive line break down. Do we foresee the bear style defense come back?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Now remember everyone, this is an SEC team so a game like this just proves how good teams find a way to win despite adversity. If Tech had played this game, it would have been a near escape that proved we're not up to par with our ranking.

It was surprising after drinking a beer then checking the scores
to see UT losing at the half. I did think they'd eventually win but
man that was something seeing that full stadium quiet.

I think Tenn comes prepared next week. This game will serve as a wake up call for them. Not saying they are going to win but I think they will play a lot better next week.
I also thought I saw they had three players suspended for the game last night but don't know if they were starters or not.

Remember how Butch Jones went over and addressed the Mountaineers after the game? And how they just looked at him blankly, like "Why are you talking to us"?
Some people thought it was classy, but I thought it was more a lack of awareness.
If App State had recovered that fumble instead of Tennessee, would Butch Jones have wanted an App State coach addressing his team?

I don't have the fkn sec network
I really wanted to watch this one
settling for usce at vandy instead
If you can get Sling, it's a 7-day free trial and you can add SECN.
awesome, thanks man
Once you sign up for slingtv, you can use watchESPN app.
Which is better in every way
That muffed punt has me salivating.
Somewhere in Blacksburg, Bud went from 6 to midnight right there.
I'll say Tennessee wins 36-20.
LETS GO APP STATE!!!!
Touchdown Appy State. UT definitely not looking like #9 right now.
Well, that started out really well!
This sucks not being able to watch it
What I'd like to see in this game:
A close, physical contest that Tenn ends up winning. That way they are forced to play their game (not a vanilla game like we hope to see from VT on Saturday) and give the staff a great look at the new D.
Well you got exactly what you were looking for. Dobbs took quite a shot on the TD in OT. He's gonna be sore this week.
SAVAGE
Don't think that this is lost on our D.....you might as well paint a target on the right side of his flak-jacket.
Is UT playing their first team?
They had better be
Pulling for App State but not sure I want to see Tennessee after a loss.
TENNESSEE IS OBVIOUSLY BACK, Y'ALL
Dey about as bak as Miami.
For the first time in my life, I finally have SEC Network (and pretty much every other sports channel). You better believe I will be watching every game I am physically able to.
What's better a Tenn lose or win? I want every SEC team to be exposed for the overrated teams they are but I don't want them fired up either going into Bristol.
They lose tonight, get fired up, and lose to us next weekend.
If it would take a loss for them to be fired up enough to play in Bristol, then them being fired up might not even be enough.
I would prefer putting them to 0-2
Totally agree. I can't come up with a scenario that benefits tech for next week. Want Tennessee to win I guess but don't...??
App State cannot hang with the Tenn WRs
No reason not to pull for an App State upset.
Tenn. will be playing their ass off next week one way or the other. If you can't get juiced to play in front of 150k, then you just don't belong on the field at this level. So I don't see Tenn. being any more or less of a test even if somehow they got embarrassed by App. tonight. As said I would love to see them tested a bit so maybe they are forced to show their hand a bit.
I completely agree with your point that if you can't get motivated for the biggest game in college football history then losing to App State probably isn't going to motivate you any further.
But I want to beat a top 10 Tennessee team. Not a #38 and still irrelevant like the last 10+ years Tennessee team
It would be kind of awkward for Gameday to come to a game between two unranked P5 teams.
Phew good thing they already decided on Game Day for next week
So if Tennessee loses to App State and we lose to Liberty, Gameday will still show up to Bristol?
Even though he wasn't mentioned, I feel like this is still warranted

Is it bad that as I watch I find myself wondering what this OL & RB will do to Motu?
Yes. Stop worrying and give the kid a chance.
"wondering" & "worrying" are not the same thing. In any event, I love what the kid is all about and I'm pulling for him! However, that position is the biggest question mark on the D.
I really think from the reports I have heard from Bud and other coaches in print that Motu is primed to have a Warrenesque season. The DLine will do a better job of keeping the linemen off him and his burst to the ball will be put to good use.
How is Musberger thinking this is a TD? What a jagaloon
In his defense, no one (including the refs) knows what a catch is these days.
The ball laying on the ground beside the WR is usually a good sign it wasn't a catch though
Plus, if he said "Appa-lay-chun" state one more time, I thought I would hurl....
Was it a catch? WAS IT A CATCH? DANNY COALE CAUGHT THAT BALL!
I feel dirty because I literally LOLed at this.
I'm digging the GoT theme song from the Tennessee band.
I've seen this somewhere before... When you are running the ball well, stop & do something different...
I still hate Kansas.
How i think a conversation with myself and jesse palmer would go
Rick and Morty will never not get a leg from me. WHEN IS SEASON THREE
Wow, Musberger is a train wreck... The kids knee was down when he caught the ball.
Tennessee is getting frustrated and drawing foolish penalties.
Classy.
This is what I don't get about targeting. Where was he supposed to hit the guy?
In my view, the guy had his knee on the ground before he caught the ball, so I guess he wasn't supposed to hit him at all.
I would agree, except the defender started breaking down for the tackle before the return mans knee touched.
soo keep breaking down and slide on his belly until colliding with the returner's legs
or maybe he could have eased up off the full sprint toward the vulnerable return man that he wanted to punish with a vicious hit because his team is stinking up their home opener.

Edit: Actually never mind. I think he will get to play next week. When ejected during the 2nd half you miss the rest of the half and 1st half of the next week. Since this is the first half I assume it's just the rest of the game.
No I think that's wrong. Since he was ejected in first half he doesn't miss any of Bristol game
Yeah, one of those that I realized I was wrong the second I hit 'Post'
Your Big Bang .gif game is strong tonight.
Just getting in the mood for Saturday!
Damn rules.
Would it be 1 quarter?
@AndyBitterVT 3m3 minutes ago
Tennessee's best LB, Jalen Reeves-Maybin, just ejected for targeting. Lucky for Vols it's the first half or he'd miss first half in Bristol.

Their offensive line looks really shaky in pass pro. App State getting pressure with just 4
I know someone who would like to Settle in the UT backfield.
Lol those memes are about to see a sharp increase in TKP usage starting Saturday
The UT coaches do not appear to really trust strange looking head guy to throw down the field, even against soft freshman coverage, and from what I have seen probably with good reason. I've gone from hoping he gets hurt enough to not play next week to hoping he is slightly slowed with an ankle sprain.
I want to beat a healthy Tenn next week. If Dobbs is hurt, we will hear nothing but excuses.
If we win we will hear excuses whether they have a reason for them or not. Period. Think of them as a band-aids on the gaping wounds we have inflicted on their soles and give them LOLUVA fan level pity.
It doesn't look like he is consistent enough to beat us down the field IMO. But that isn't necessarily Bud's kryptonite.
Gutsy call.
Well executed.
to app states coach
Wow! App. St. is getting a great push up front... Consistently.
Damn what a catch.
Wow!!! That was nice. 13-3 App St.
Missed PAT. They will lose by 1-2.
Tenn better get their head in the game. As a said though, go Mountaineers
Already coming back to haunt them. Now they have to score to win.
So how much does App State have to win by to be ranked next week?
1
Score probably won't hold, but this. is. hilarious. After as much talk as I've heard and seen. Hilarious.
After watching this, I sure am glad we don't have to play App State in Bristol.
I know it's wayyyyy early on, but if Tennessee wins anything under 9 games this season you know that Butch Jones seat will be getting warm. He has recruited very well, but if results don't show soon we all know how their fanbase will turn on him in a second.

In all seriousness, props to App State. I think after this weekend, people will realize that UT is not unstoppable, and VT is better than you thought. Hoping for a classic in Bristol.
Miami has to play AT Appalachian State in 2 weeks?
How TF did that happen?
Yep! App State is still riding the wave on that Michigan win and scheduling better deals all the time.
They are FBS now.
Appalachian State is FBS now. It will be just like our upcoming 3-game series with ODU where we will go to Norfolk for 1 game.
And then the four game series after that where we go there twice.
So is Tennessee still "in the shadows"?!
Hurd is a man. I don't like that we have to play against him.
I saw the stat where Dobbs was like 1-13 on passes of 30 or more yards last season. Hasn't looked that great on his first couple long passes, even under 30 yards..... thats kinda reassuring to potentially not have to worry about the long ball
Except run it down your throat teams (sans GT) always make me nervous with our undersized defense.
We are not undersized this year. Maybe if we leave Mook in for power teams at one position, but if we bring in Shegog we are not our historical undersized anymore. See Mihota debate, Edmonds bros photo, and let it Settle in.
Still early on, but outside of a few stud players on defense -Tennessee doesn't impress
All I wanna know is: where's MoD?
That Tennessee Center is going to love Tim Settle...and Baron, Williams, Walker lol
I'm only sad UT is having this bad game now. Wish they had our against us. Don't want them working out the kinks before they play us.
App State win would be the worst thing for us.
My head knows that you are right, but my heart wants Gameday to talk about Tennessee's loss all day. And then I want to watch the fanbase implode when they are 0-2.
The kid Appy is putting on the nose is wearing Coleman Thomas out with leverage moves. They need to chip him with a guard.
Those season opening trap games are a bitch!
We still have one to play.
http://www.volnation.com/forum/tennessee-vols-football/260022-official-9...
The place is burning down over there.
When TKPers argue it's not even over football. It's over bourbon or BBQ. Those Vols are about to kill each other.
From what I've seen, that's pretty par for the course.
Yea....about that lol. Wait 'til we lose to ECU again *crosses fingers* "Please don't let us!"
Argue over BBQ? There is no argument over barbecue, Texas style with the slow smoked, dry rubbed brisket is the best. It and my wife are the only good things to come out of Texas.
The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire. We ain't got no water, let the motherfucker burn!
THAT AIN'T A CATCH.
Incomplete
No catch
Seems like a good time to say Danny Coale caught that ball.
Only THAT was a catch. He had control before it hit the ground.
Good call.
Why is their offense still hanging on that overturned TD. He didn't maintain possession through the catch.
We need more angles.
OK apologize if previously covered but do we want TVols to win or lose this game???
It doesn't matter if they lose to me, but it would look better for us if we beat them while they are ranked in the top 10. They come in ready to play at Bristol regardless of the outcome after this 1st half.
^^yup, that makes sense^^
Yes.
Depends. If you hate Tenn you want them to lose. Otherwise, it's probably in our best interest if they win
Great question, but I'm sort of enjoying the current trajectory, though my only real preference is for the Battle at Bristol to be an L for them.
Now that was a catch!
Fuller sighting!
No wonder App state Is winning!!
Hahahahaha I don't know why but I just bust out laughing with that INT.
Me too!!!
Asu have their own Fuller. On D no less. No wonder they're winning lol
Oh wow.
And that's why UT is beatable. Josh Dobbs will make mistakes in the passing game. He is a good runner but outside of that he isn't anything to get worked up about.
Those boos at halftime are real.
CAN I HAVE IT?
"It's been kind of a rough night" - Butch Jones, on the officiating as the Vols trail App State 13-3
Ha-ha! Practicing excuses for next week?
Practice is crucial for success. Everyone wants the prize without the process but you have to practice to be prepared for those on field interviews.
I've been drinking coffee to make sure I'm awake to both watch the game and get some work done, but I don't think the coffee was necessary... or that much work is getting done.
Welcome to fall, Jeep!
This is karma for all the trash talking they've been doing in Bristol and on twitter about Virginia Tech. I am living for this, you guys have no idea.
I prefer to think that karma for that will be Tennessee losing the Battle of Bristol.
:)
The part of me that loves college football chaos is thoroughly enjoying this game.
The part of me that wants Tech to get an upset over a top 10 SEC team is concerned.
Exactly. It's an internal struggle, but I'm still enjoying this game.
That's how I feel. The vols are going to dick around and screw up Fuente's chance at beating a top 10 team in his (edit: second) game as VT's head coach.

Tim Settle is going to put their center in the QB's lap every single play he's on the field.
I know coaches talk Timmy can't play every down but I see him giving people so many issues
Yup, there's a lot of football left. Either way I feel a lot better about next week.
That Berry kid can return the football. Good thing Joey Slye can kick the ball 500 yards out of the back of the endzone.
Got into a sweet argument at a bar with a WVU fan.i don't have as better place to put this but it felt good
Cool story, bro
Details - what was it about and how many booths were burned in lieu of couches when he lost?
Coleman Thomas not looking great out there. Can't wait for Tim Settle and company to introduce themselves.
You can probably hear the moths up around the lights in that stadium right now.
Hard to hear anything with that deafening gameday atmosphere of booing.
When they were booing over Rocky Top before halftime
Sidenote: I love that movie.
Josh Dobbs is Charlie Villanuevas doppleganger.

Funny. If you add up the number of eyebrows in both photos, you get the number of fans UVA had at their spring game.

wasn't Tennessee's center supposed to be one of the stronger players of their OLine?
He's so strong he snapped the ball plumb by the QB.
I thought he was a Freshman
Nah. He's the kid from Fort Chiswell in Virginia. He's been there for a couple years now.
Thank you!
Bud Foster right now:
If the Tenn. Offense doesn't turn things around they are going to have a rough night against a Bud Foster D.
Am I the only one who didn't think that story deserved such an enthusiastic Musburger "WHAT A STORY"
Not to distract from the magnificent egg Tennesee's been laying, but he has been awful
Hopefully both our lines are licking their chops
Me too. For Liberty. I don't want us looking past Liberty and I don't want this game to give us a false sense of security for Bristol.
That was a great pick.
For sure. Cameron Sutton is a crazy gifted talent.
Tenn. Player makes a play against App. State and he is headed to the NFL.
Cam Sutton is honestly one of the best in the nation.
That was a nice INT
Wake Forest beating Tulane 7-3 with 5 mins left in the 4th quarter.
That sounds about right.
Go ACC!
Must.... not post.... zeroes...
Lol "big players make big plays in big games"
*A player I've never heard of made a pretty nice play in a game that not many people care about.
USC and UGA news tickers both not good. UT may be worse than App, and us, and still win the East. Now that would be sweet.
Look out! Tennessee O-line starting to get a push now...3 quarters in lol
It's 9:53 and Tennessee has 3 points!
Oh Please let it be different...
Old Tech: Beat Liberty badly and get crushed by a top 10 UT who eeked by ApSt
New Tech?: Beat Liberty and follow through with quality win over UT????
#infuwetrust #enfuente #budstayed
When you realize Tennessee has only averaged 1 point per quarter against App. state...
Make that 2
App State defensive players dropping like flies out there. Hopefully it's just cramps for this kid. The physicality is starting to weigh on them.
App state is a step ahead and 3 players down on this drive as the Vols close it to a touchdown by settling for a field goal.
We are going to eat this QB alive when he dinks those lame duck screen passes into traffic.
LOL TENNESSEE IS SOFTER THAN BABY SHIT!
Brent Must Have A Hamburger is the best!
Way this game is going if App State somehow scores one more TD it is over, however, I see Tennessee get a TD tie it then late in the 4th score one more to close it out. 20-13 Tennessee wins but scratches head for answers
I'm incredibly impressed at the accuracy of this post! Would you like to have a prediction on our season as well?
Ha I was too! Educated guess watching the game for 2 1/2 quarters. For the good guys, hard to say we don't know what our team looks like. Last night just seemed like Tennessee had no other answer then hand-off's and a few pass plays. Kinda looked like our old playing card.
wow. Great play
That zone read option play has been eating UT alive all night long.
That QB has looked really crisp with his fakes in the run game tonight.
Jerod, take notes
A win against Tenn. will not be considered a quality win at the end of the season.
They are keeping App State out of the end zone. But their offense is pretty limited.
But losing to us will give them a quality loss.
It's because they played Navy in week one.
/s
So we beat them one million to three, right?
Third down for what
3rd FG for what!? lol
Lololol
Damn, how good is Appy?
They are good enough to make Tenn look like a bad team.
I really hope Bud's reading the threads tonight
Win or lose...App St up 13-6 against SEC "juggernaut" heading to 4th
I suppose the good news for us is they can't keep everything vanilla and avoid putting stuff on film for bristol. Cause they apparently need it all to get past app st.
I see why they moved this game to Thursday
And canceled classes for the day.
They should have cancelled hangover day instead
Everyone is making a HUGE assumption that UT must be really bad, because, well, Appy St is beating them.
Serious Question - anyone consider that Appy maybe is pretty decent and showed up more prepared and more fired up to play this one?
Edit -- to add to this, I don't automatically assume our front 7 on D shows up and plays at the level Appy has tonight. I hope we do. But I give Appy's D some serious credit on this game.
Legitimately, I think App State would have beaten us last year.
IIRC they were an 11 win team last year.
11-2 I think was where they ended after winning their bowl game.
And 1 of their 2 losses came against Clemson.
Truth. Last 19 games they're 17 - 2. Making that FBS move look easy.
11:2 odds you're right
General assessment of Tennessee:
Mine suck.
Will we get announcers to make a comment on looking ahead to Battle of Bristol VT matchup?
They haven't brought that up since the game started
It's a middle of the pack ACC team against the mighty Vols. Not worth senile Brent's time
They're too busy talking about how close Tennessee's FOUR losses were last season, and how close they were to being undefeated.
Oh godamnit
They'll still be cocky after this game even after the performance they've put on.
You know they will be.
Hopefully cocky enough to keep them in the top ten
Lmao you're right. I wanna see how many Vols are huge app state fans after tonight. "Well app state is better than tech." Already sense it coming.
More like Cocky Top amirite?
We use to always join in at the point of the song and sing "good ol' floppy cock".
That should've been intercepted.
Kid was on an island and had the chance to at least knock that down. Wasn't a bad throw, but it wasn't a great one either.
Edit: dude turned his head just as the ball was going into Malone's arms. Too late.
And that is why bud teaches to not watch the ball for DBs
Brent said Appa-LAY-shuh state.... C'mon dude.
This has been bugging me all night!
Brent's been bugging me since I was like 10 years old. I was so young/immature that I thought calling him "Mustard Burger" was a good insult
The announcers are killing me.
I know it will totally deflate next weekend, but after reading this thread, f*ck Tennessee. Hope they lose.
"Tenn.Suddenly in control" just like they were when it was 0 to 0. Must Burger -The more I have to listen to the broadcast A's the more I want App State to pull off the upset.
3 hours ago! I guess it's been a while
musberger getting that $ec money now. Always been a terrible announcer, now relegated to a smaller audience. Win win for society.
App State's linebackers look pretty good. Hope Motu has turned that corner. He could be key in stopping this run heavy UT team.
Pretty good? I'd say they have been the key to he game on D for Appy. They look phenomenal. I could count the missed tackles by LBs on 1 finger.
Agreed. Hope we see our linebackers come out and play like that every game.
Our defense makes Dobbs pay dearly for whatever the hell I just watched.
That could and probably should have been a pick 6.
Holding against a rush of 3 linemen. hahah and then the last play pressured by 3 again. That Tenn O line looks terrible.
If we get pressure on Dobbs our secondary is going to have a field day.
Run baby run!
That might have been the worst pep band rendition of Seven Nation Army that I have ever heard
I have to admit, I like how they play the Gladiator theme for the D. I love that flick.
This game is really making my week right now.
Looks like App State's offensive line is starting to get beat up front. They look exhausted out there. This FG attempt is huge.
UT firmly in control!
I think this was Kevin Bacon's film debut
It's 10:38 and UT is firmly in control.
Tie ballgame.
Cmon pick 6 on this drive
from that replay, that kid most certainly did not clap his hands
Just spotted Cornholio in the crowd shot.
the good news...their starters have been in all game!
Those Fuller's will get after ya.
We may have 3-4 guys sack Dobbs at same time next week lol
Just realized that vaunted UT Defense has yet to record a sack in this game.
Fuller's Rule
Did he just say Tennessee and dominating in the same sentence?? Lol
Fine, I'll just say it:
"App State is fully in control now"
Too early to cue the "SEC" chant? Lol
All these Jet Sweeps. You know Scotty wishes he was coaching against Tenn. next week.
Just think, if they had made the Extra Point, this game could have been put away right here. Special Teams matter.
There's just a minute left... oh man, oh man, oh man
Holy crap.. App state may really win this with a Fg
By next week which SEC team will replace Tenn in the top 10 poll rankings?
A: Yes
I AM SO TORN RIGHT NOW!!
http://www.volnation.com/forum/tennessee-vols-football/260022-official-9...
Firing the coaches talk. Love it.
No disrespect at all to Appalachian State...
... but that orange-flavored Knoxville Kool-Aid must have been delicious for Tennessee to be ranked top 10 in BOTH polls.
No app state player clapped their hands, wtf?
yeah. That looked like a phantom call to me. Didn't end up mattering. But still.
Oh, Bristol, huh? Tell me about that
I want Tennessee to win for Bristol purposes. Having said that, if the App St. kicker gets another crack at a FG, I hope he makes it.
Aaaand we finally got a mention that we play them next week
Regardless of the outcome, this game will always have that big fat OT next to the score on Tennessee's schedule.
Ugh. OT. I don't think State has the kicker to contend here. Hopefully he proves me wrong.
Really OT? So much for that top 10 rating.
There it was with 27 seconds left Tenn was not looking ahead to VT at Bristol.
Is Mike London in charge of clock management for App State?
Mike London time-management jokes will remain my favorite jokes until we get some Bronco Mendenhall material
Their coach should have fun answering questions about that the rest of the season. #failure
Told ya PAT miss would cost them the game
Love App State here, but that was some LOLuva levels of terrible clock management...
That extra point, damn it.
How toned down is the UT tailgate going to be next weekend? Love it
You obviously don't know UT fans. Refer to Hokiegirl's comment about cockiness above.
True that. Bristol will still be rockin. Y'all gotta be even more excited
I appreciate you still hanging around here. Thanks for stopping by, brother.
Man that game next week looks very winnable
That Tennessee OL looks quite bad this year. Settle might feast on them next week
I think we should win if we're better than this App State team. Wow
Yeah, I'm thinking we'll see Dobbs run a ton next week
He'll have to behind that OL
What OL?
Oh. Count on it. But I think he's containable. Bud has does well against QBs that are known for running. It's the ones you don't expect to take off that bug us so much. Plus, I think we stack the box and force them to throw the ball.
I predict 2 OT for a UT Win on an App St. missed field goal.
Regardless of a win here, they're in OT with Appalachian State.
I predict 20-13 UT win
I see you fixed the 2 pt conversion guess!
I meant 20 lol
I hate this because it gives me way too much hope for Bristol. I was on the Tenn wins by 10 for awhile now. But after tonight I my heart keeps saying VT win but I don't want to get too into that hope.
Solution: Wow App State is really F'n good.
Loose balls have bounced Tennessee's way all night.
Edit: Since the muffed punt
Man. That is incredibly lucky. Dobbs with another poor decision. Also looks a little shaken up.
Stout is probably the best DL name I've ever seen.
Fumbling into the endzone should never result in a touchdown nor an advance in yards...IMO.
Yeah. That should reward the defense every time. Should be an automatic touchback.
Tenn. may have just fumbled their way to a win.
PLAYOFFS!
Dobbs got REKTD
I like my broken ribs with a dry rub!
A single extra point and App state is already heading to the bus with that win.
If App State gets a TD here, do they go for 2?
After having 10 players cramp in the last few minutes, I would say yes.
Might as well, kicker's already missed one PAT
Nice to see UT's fan base can do something other than boo.
"Let the crowd take you home" - Brent Musberger. Stop trying to sell us on the SEC, you senile old man.
I really want App state to Jet sweep their way to a loss so that Bristol means something on the other hand, i hate the SEC......soooooo
You'd think they'd just clinched the East.
He probably wasn't thinking about it, but Appy St's QB coulda run for that 1st down easily and kept things going.
EDIT: Upon replay, probably not.
I was saying the same thing. To my tv. Loudly.
The difference is that we got Lucky!
SOON
I smell blood. I might not sleep for the next 9 nights. Can't wait to get to BRISTOLLLL
Bristol is Coming!
BRISTOL MATTERS!!!!
All I could think during that final minute was that Sandman is a lot more impressive way to "take you home."
Butch Jones going over and personally commending Appalachian St's players though... I can't say anything bad about that.
You never know, he might be interviewing with App State someday.
So, you say he's networking?
Networking is crucial for success in today's world. Before I walked off the field I thought, "What would Frank Beamer do?" Long story short, I only have three facial expressions so I thought I should go over and tell them how well they played instead of doing this on camera after eeking out a close game.

I'm not so sure he wasn't looking to see if Mike London was over there making clock management decisions.
We will win next week. Props to app state. They played one hell of a game but Tennessee looks bad. Especially offensive line- they look horrible
Not so fast my friend...
This X 1000
I agree. But everyone knows what UT is all about on offense. Ride Hurd and Kamara and get what you can from Dobbs through the air and on the ground.
except some of the issues werent play calling, their offensive line looked meh at best and their defense lacked discipline. they over committed so hard on those jet sweeps i hope fuente saw that. That and dobbs didnt make good decisions at all, lots of sloppy plays
Fuck UT. I was nervous yesterday. Then I got drunk and watched this game. Go HOKIES
You have to trust the process, Leonard. Brick by brick. You can't have the prize without the process, even if it means sticking to your guns.
They do the grab each other and sway thing.
The worst thing
Great. Both our big OOC opponents do that.
Not that there's anything wrong with that...
If this taught me anything it's that the good guys need to focus on Liberty and Liberty only until Sunday morning.
Yeah. I've said it before- Liberty is well coached and they get decent talent. Don't think we'll get in a Dog fight with them, but in college football anything is possible. Don't over look any team.
This is the outcome I wanted, but man, I wanted to have some fun on social media tonight. I had planned to write "feels like 98" to mock everyone in Bristol buying those shirts.
For some reason I was thinking about you during this entire game
'We saw him walking gingerly'
The UT O-Line definitely looks suspect and Dobbs makes some dumb decisions with pressure in his face. Here's to hoping our defense can exceed what App State did on D tonight. Our O definitely has weapons in the passing game compared to App State, so I think we should do a WHOLE lot more in the air than what they did. First things first though, beat Liberty!!
The way SEC commentators spin this UT win is hilarious! It's like watching Fox NEWS/MSNBC
I keep waiting to hear another point of view even though it's not coming lol.
Y'all gotta be encouraged after that. Good luck Saturday, and hope y'all come thru with a good win and no injuries
Thanks man...We appreciate the good words...looking forward to a great game next week!
I'm sure we'll win, but right now we're focused on Liberty.
this reminds me of when we played at Ohio St two years ago...
GO HOKIES!
Ill see myself out.
I won't lie, the meltdown at volnation rivals elevenwarriors' after our 2014 game. Glorious.
So, if UT loses next week. Will it be because they spent the summer preparing to play the App State offense?
Maybe it's more like they were looking forward to VT, and overlooked App State a bit.
I wonder how many plays they held back, as to not show their hand before Bristol...
Does anyone see this setting up to have strong similarities to how the Ohio State game started to pan out a week before. Navy gave OSU fits due to offensive line break down. Do we foresee the bear style defense come back?
It seems like it could give them fits....
Butch said "found" a way to win, but "fumbled" a way to win seems more accurate.
Butt* fumbled
Now remember everyone, this is an SEC team so a game like this just proves how good teams find a way to win despite adversity. If Tech had played this game, it would have been a near escape that proved we're not up to par with our ranking.
ECU 2007?
It was surprising after drinking a beer then checking the scores
to see UT losing at the half. I did think they'd eventually win but
man that was something seeing that full stadium quiet.
I think Tenn comes prepared next week. This game will serve as a wake up call for them. Not saying they are going to win but I think they will play a lot better next week.
I also thought I saw they had three players suspended for the game last night but don't know if they were starters or not.
Tennessee = Touchable
"What are you prepared to do?"
They look like they think he's a douchebag with a misplaced message...
So, pretty accurate assessment.
I don't agree every often, but when I do, I agree with stuff that's correct.
Man, if App St would have recovered that fumble, this would haunt the vols into eternity.

You really have to admire that perfect form tackle on Dobbs.
Dobbs was like "I do this in madden all the time. How hard can it be?" And the app state defender just says "BOOM"
That would have been EPIC.
Man #40 for App really gives his all on that one
