"I think they want to be resilient and I think they want to believe and have new habits. But there is some history and so there was some reversion to that today, maybe by what they know, but again my job is to help them build great habits. And when things don't go as well as you hoped and don't go according to plan, that's usually when some of that reversion comes back and I pointed that out to them a number of times. But that's where we currently are and that's where we are launching from and I have clearer feedback now."
I think this is where he alludes to the bad habits from London's era

okay. fair point. I was listening for something more glaring and didn't read into that segment the same way you did. UVA has major issues and I don't know if their (recent) history is solely to blame. I'm still up-in-the-air with regards to the Bronco Mendenhal project. I know he had success at BYU but I don't know if/how that translates to UVA. I sort of expected UVA to improve because ML was really that bad, but I'm not really sure if that will happen. It would really warm my heart if they continued their downward spiral and somehow, against all odds, BM proves to be even worse than ML. That's my modest dream, anyway.

My son was reading this and commented "Bronco said Kurt Benkert looked good. Who is that, the Richmond QB?"
It also appears the offense is so bad he did not realize his defense was too complicated for his players.
Looks like he had to lower his qualification standards to have enough people to hold a practice.
And in further good news, there is no indication his no drama everybody matters approach is resonating with recruits.

God. That reeked of someone who desperately wants to sound like they are knowledgeable about football but hasn't a clue. It's telling when someone's predictions about other teams only talks about its head coach, because that means he has no knowledge about the actual program itself. And his comment that a pairing of Fuente and Foster can't work really sounds more like desperate longing than the authoritative voice he's striving for.
Also, when was the last time Virginia out-toughed and out-efforted anyone? Groh and London turned them into a program of creampuffs that folds the second they get punched in the mouth. Forget knowing the other Coastal programs, this clown doesn't even know his own.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I couldn't be happier Mendenhall is running that program. London worried me, he seemed like he consistently recruited some great players and they fought hard for him on the field, regardless of results. Mendenhall seems like an average High School coach, and the players don't seem to be taking to his bizarre methods.
I anticipate Mendenhall having an awful couple of years, before ultimately being replaced by a much better coach.

This is the same stuff they have been saying since 2004. You cant beat it out of em, I thought they would have given up on this by now. Seeing stuff like this makes me only hope they go 0-12, which is a real possibility.
They are some weird fellows. After what 12 or 13 years of losing to us, the season they had last year, and no winning season since '11, some of them still think they are superior.

Why yes indeed, Jameison. Verily, had our man not suffered a stubbed toe on the third hoop, the croquet match would have been ours!

I want them to lose every game. I want their players to leave the team because they can't handle all the losing. I want their coaches to resign before their contracts are up. My sunday text conversation with a friend of mine who is a UVA fan, but Hampden Sydney graduate, which is about just as bad except they don't have co-eds there.
Me: "You guys seriously just got smoked by Richmond? I thought Bronco was going to turn it around?"
Him: "Yea man, he will, but that game was just a total bunch of horse shit!"
Me: "Well, that's really fitting actually because your coach is named BRONCO."
Every time I try to have a meaningful sports conversation with a Wahoo it turns into our football team is going to be great, Tech sucks, the girls there are ugly, your stadium is LAME, we're a better school, basketball, JPJ, Thomas Jefferson, Heath Miller and a bunch of other incoherent nonsense that results in me pointing out that every UVA girl they dated in college was at best a 6 and that the school spirit for the biggest collegiate sport in the country is pitiful and that I can see the agreement in their eyes.
I used to want UVA to be at least mildly good for the sake of strength of schedule and make the ACC better. I wonder if any of you all have felt this way too, because it could potentially help us to beat a better team. At this point, when most of my UVA friends have grown up and you think they would have an actual, logical point to discuss, I just want them to crap the bed and continue that dumpster fire of a football program until Scott Stadium has to be turned into a high school field.

I think if we need to beat a better (than loluva) team then we just need to tweak our schedule. For example, ditch ECU and work out some kind of permanent OOC deal with the $EC or the B1G, or maybe both, in alternating years. But as for the hoos, I want them to go 1-11 every year, only because asking for 0-12 seems over the top. I don't care who the win is as long as it's some shitty 1AA school from New Hampshire. I don't want them to win a game against us, I don't want them to win a recruiting battle with us, hell, if our president and theirs sit down for a friendly poker game I want them to lose that too. I want them to keep losing until even their grandkids can't remember the last time a living hoo witnessed a win against VT.

Neighbors are both LOLUVA grads. Their response: "I don't even know why we have an ACC football team. We clearly can't compete in the conference. We should should either drop football or drop down a division."
Two points: one, that would take all the fun out of you being terrible. Two, no way in hell I'm listening to them crow about how they won some piddly conference with George Mason in it while focusing on academics instead of big time college football. Because you know they will.

1. Virginia (0-1): Safe to say the honeymoon period for Bronco Mendenhall at Virginia is already over. Because things aren't going to get any easier going on the road to face Oregon this week.
Best Win: None | Worst Loss: 37-20 vs. Richmond
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I think the real question here is will the 37-20 loss remain the worst loss, or which game will end up being the worst loss? is losing by 50 to Oregon worse? UConn by 21? VT by 38-0? They set the bar really high for game 1.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
That HAD to be a joke. Haha but it wouldnt surprise me. In what way do they think they could score 38, much less hold Oregon to 10. You should bet these characters

They have escaped last place with a moral victory!
<3. Virginiugh (0-3)
After embarrassing losses to Richmond and Oregon, the Hoos rebounded with a moral victory, losing 13-10 at UConn. As UVa founder Thomas Jefferson once wrote, "Sometimes, in the face of troublesome times, it can be best for man to take pause and appraise his moral victories. Oh, what a bunch of #^&@. You think we beat the British with a bunch of moral victories?!" Wait, actually I think it was my middle school football coach, Mr. Jefferson, who said that second part./blockquote>

Could the state of their program and that horrid loss to Richmond be the rock bottom any D1-A program has been in a long time?? Who knows, they could end up winning three or four games, but the ACC is pretty damn tough this year and they wont be out toughing anybody. I dont know who else they play OOC, but if they cant stay within 3 scores of Richmond, it might get real ugly.
Is the Richmond thrashing the worst P5 team has lost to an FCS opponent? The score was actually closer than the game was but theres no measure for that.

I love all the talk about BM working these guys into the best shape of their lives. Friend of mine was at the Richmond game and sat behind the bench. He said the defense was completely gassed after one of the longer Richmond drives. He also said a bunch of the players seemed worn out early, and he could see the effect in the game. Gotta love it.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
They talk as if they should be good at football for some reason. Is it because that's just how pompous they are? You would think they had a history of winning football. They are one of the all time losers in college football history. My opinion is they really think they have a better history and are held in higher regards historically, than VT. Just like Cowherd said 10 years ago, all they have done is mid 90's they beat Fl. State. Its been twenty one years. They have never won an ACC title outright, and right now, may be the worst team in FBS. And it is still fun watching them lose.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Ok. I'll play.
1. VT - Fuente brings a top 20 offense to pair with Foster's top 10 defense. Sounds like a winning combination to me. With wins come 4 & 5 star recruits and the 757 kids stay in state.
2. Miami - Richt is the right guy to actually bring the U back and the annual VT - Miami game decides who wins the conference on any given year.
3. UNC - Continue to recruit well and play solid football, but they are second tier behind the top 2.
4. Pitt - Great coaching but it's too hard to recruit to an NFL city where the off campus NFL stadium is half capacity at best for most games.
5. Duke - great coaching for now, but Cutcliff isn't going to be there too much longer. Then they are in trouble.
6. GT - Due for a complete overhaul when, in a few years, they finally get rid of CPJ and rebuild. It'll take a little while to recruit into a completely new system.
7. LOLUVA - because LOLUVA.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Not really because It's Miami. Miami never has a problem recruiting like Pittsburgh does. Miami couldn't develop talent. I don't think Richt will have that same problem. I don't see Pitt bringing in a top 10 class anytime soon.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Are you talking Big East days with Miami? The only time it was between us was the very first year we were in before there was a championship game. Other than that they've been nowhere close to the ACCCG.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
With regards to Pitt, recruits don't care about fan attendance nearly as much as they care about a coach puttings guys in the NFL, and Narduzzi is going to put guys in the NFL.

Despite an 0-3 start, Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall says his team remains encouraged. "There's probably more optimism now than there was in the offseason that this program and this team is capable," he said. "We're gaining momentum rather than losing momentum." Mendenhall has never started a season 0-3. "It's uncharted territory. A tangible result would be helpful, but I'm looking for simple successes as well."
How is it possible that they could be "encouraged"? I guess the margin of loss has declined, but still. It was UConn, so it's not like the competition has gotten better. CMU will win by 2 scores.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Because, from his perspective, it probably seems like it's getting better, but when the starting point is so low...
1. Got beaten soundly by an FCS team.
2. Got beaten soundly by an FBS team, but they're a good team so that's OK.
3. Almost beat an FBS team! We were this close, guys!
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
We will have less talent than Miami/Carolina, but we will out-tough and out-effort them regularly enough.
If Saturday's show of "effort" and "toughness" the type that this guy is talking about, then I'm all about Bronco being the coach at UVA for a looooong time!
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
For real. How many times did their RB get stuffed and the O-line just watch as our guys piled on and pushed him back? That's the situation where our OL would have rallied and driven the pile for 5 more yards. Hell, DJ Reid showed more toughness and effort in garbage time than their whole O-line.

To be honest, I thought Mizzell had a good game. He was the only glimmer of hope for that offense, and they didn't use him enough. He was running for long gains more than I'd like to see.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I felt bad for him. He was completely sold a litany of lies that his going to UVa would usher in an influx of elite talent by people around him who stood to benefit from him going to UVa. At almost any other program who was recruiting him, he probably ends up in the NFL, but at Virginia, his career never even had a chance.

Well, you do kinda have to be tough to wear an ascot to a football game but, it's a relative thing. Tougher than the guy next to you is not the same as tougher than the guy at the next stadium.
Except in his case given their attendance, the guy next to you may very well be in the next stadium.
Bronco more or less seems like he is preaching at a peace rally rather than coaching toughness...
Until his players start taking nut shots.

In all fairness, they need to give Bronco more time. It is hard to be worse than London after only one game.
I thought maybe he would be an upgrade. Then I caught his post-game presser: http://augustafreepress.com/press-conference-uva-coach-bronco-mendenhall...

LOLUVA can finally say that they have achieved #1 status!
http://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/college-football-bottom-2...
I think they have a really good chance to hold onto that spot.
I have to say I agreed with the writeup.

how many consecutive weeks can UVA hold onto that #1 spot? I'm hoping it's in the double, or even triple, digits.
How long is 12 years???
For some reason, this immediately came to mind:

I didn't realize until that write-up that they have to play OREGON next week. Excuse me for a moment
I work with four UVA alums and was told yesterday that UVA will beat Oregon 38-10. The sad part is that they truly believed it.
They might be able to put up 14 or even 20 on a pretty bad Oregon D, but I would be shocked if the ducks don't score on 95% of their drives.
That HAD to be a joke. Haha but it wouldnt surprise me. In what way do they think they could score 38, much less hold Oregon to 10. You should bet these characters

Is the Richmond thrashing the worst P5 team has lost to an FCS opponent? The score was actually closer than the game was but theres no measure for that.
No, not even close. Northwestern (1979-82) wins that ignominious honor. However, the 1958-1961 LOLUVA squads make an appearance at #2. LINK
Even FSU on dat list....
... and we're nowhere close as far as I can tell.
When they introduced Bronco as the coach, I just assumed it was a real person, not this:

I love all the talk about BM working these guys into the best shape of their lives. Friend of mine was at the Richmond game and sat behind the bench. He said the defense was completely gassed after one of the longer Richmond drives. He also said a bunch of the players seemed worn out early, and he could see the effect in the game. Gotta love it.
They like to hold on to that #1 ranking from one week in 1990-ish...
Yep I forgot about that. They think they are Nebraska or somebody because of that. We beat them that year as well as '95 when they beat FSU.
Ok. I'll play.
Shouldn't this argument apply to Miami as well?
Not really because It's Miami. Miami never has a problem recruiting like Pittsburgh does. Miami couldn't develop talent. I don't think Richt will have that same problem. I don't see Pitt bringing in a top 10 class anytime soon.
Are you talking Big East days with Miami? The only time it was between us was the very first year we were in before there was a championship game. Other than that they've been nowhere close to the ACCCG.
They were close the first year in the ACC before BC was added.
With regards to Pitt, recruits don't care about fan attendance nearly as much as they care about a coach puttings guys in the NFL, and Narduzzi is going to put guys in the NFL.
After the BC game, I have a feeling I'm going to come back to this guy's comments over the course of the season with this reaction:
And then from ESPN's Andrea Adelson:
Despite an 0-3 start, Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall says his team remains encouraged. "There's probably more optimism now than there was in the offseason that this program and this team is capable," he said. "We're gaining momentum rather than losing momentum." Mendenhall has never started a season 0-3. "It's uncharted territory. A tangible result would be helpful, but I'm looking for simple successes as well."
How is it possible that they could be "encouraged"? I guess the margin of loss has declined, but still. It was UConn, so it's not like the competition has gotten better. CMU will win by 2 scores.
honestly I hope CMU Boston Colleges the hell out of LOLUVA...it would amuse me to no end to see LOLUVA get shutout at home
Because, from his perspective, it probably seems like it's getting better, but when the starting point is so low...
1. Got beaten soundly by an FCS team.
2. Got beaten soundly by an FBS team, but they're a good team so that's OK.
3. Almost beat an FBS team! We were this close, guys!
well...they were this close to tying the game..not winning it
so if logic holds they'll go into OT with Central Michigan only to lose on some whacky bone-headed play
It is entirely possible that they will become the first ever team to find a way to lose via clock mismanagement... in OT!
Bronco Mendenhall lives in a fantasy world.
I eagerly await Hatin' On Bronco Mendenhall later this season.
Will we need to qualify to comment in that thread?
yes, you will need at least -24 turkey legs.
Bump.
Did Nate Silver write this?
great timing on that bump
well done on maintaining the posture of thread relevance... 3 Zimas for you sir
It just never gets old.
We will have less talent than Miami/Carolina, but we will out-tough and out-effort them regularly enough.
If Saturday's show of "effort" and "toughness" the type that this guy is talking about, then I'm all about Bronco being the coach at UVA for a looooong time!
He is a senior so...
