Virginia Tech Football: Tennessee Q&A Preview

The Volunteers' perspective on the Battle at Bristol.

The Tennessee Marching Band takes the field. [Tennessee Athletics]

The Hokies were far from perfect in Justin Fuente's Virginia Tech coaching debut. Five fumbles — two from quarterback Jerod Evans — greatly limited the offense's production against Liberty, and inconsistent blocking on the perimeter did little to help the cause. But as has become the norm in Blacksburg over the years, Bud Foster's defense ceded next to nothing against an anemic Flames' offense, and Tech ultimately cruised to a 36-13 victory.

Tennessee wasn't given the same luxury. Squaring off with FBS newcomer Appalachian State, the Vols found themselves in a dogfight from the onset, narrowly escaping with a 20-13 overtime victory over the Mountaineers. The preseason top-ten team has since plummeted to No. 17 in the AP Poll, a drastic fall for a team still sitting at 1-0.

The Bristol Motor Speedway awaits both the Hokies and Vols, over 150,000 fans anxious to take in the biggest college football game ever. But for all the hoopla surrounding the Battle at Bristol — College GameDay and Kenny Chesney can cause quite the stir — the game will ultimately be won between the lines. To get some first-hand insight on what to expect from the Volunteers, I spoke to Will Shelton, senior writer at Rocky Top Talk. If you're in need of some expert gambling advice, venture over behind enemy lines for my interview with Will.

JC: After entering the season ranked ninth in the country and considered by many the favorite in the SEC East, Tennessee appeared vulnerable - if not, dare I say, overrated - in their victory over Appalachian State. What's the general mood in Knoxville right now? Are Vols fans just relieved to escape Week 1 with a win, or are there serious concerns about Butch Jones and the Volunteer offense as Tennessee prepares for the Battle at Bristol?

WS: The general mood is an anxious one. Tennessee hadn't been in the Top 10 in 10 years, but got there mainly on the strength of great recruiting and almost beating great teams last year. So in some sense we're still waiting for the big "we're back!" win, and without the confidence that carries you're left with mostly anxiety when App State takes you to overtime. But certainly relieved as well, and feeling better after watching half the SEC struggle this weekend. If not for almost all of the pieces of this offense having been present and exceptional in the run game last year, there would be serious concerns.

JC: Josh Dobbs burst onto the national college football scene in 2015 and helped lead the Vols to an impressive nine-win season. Expectations were understandably high for Dobbs entering his senior year, but the Alpharetta, Georgia native struggled in Week 1. Do you expect a bounce-back game in Bristol for the dual-threat Dobbs, or could turnovers and inconsistency plague the Vols' offense once again?

WS: I expect him to be more productive because I expect them to use him more. The threat of Dobbs running the ball is what makes Tennessee's offense so dynamic, but he only had four carries in regulation last week (plus two sacks and a fumbled snap). On two third downs in overtime, Dobbs ran it. What really plagues Tennessee's offense is a lack of explosive pass plays. They hit the one against App State for their only touchdown in regulation, but that was it and they only had 16 30+ yard pass plays in 2015. That was the biggest on-field question about the Vols coming into the year, and last week certainly didn't answer it.

JC: There's plenty of talent surrounding Dobbs for the Volunteers, perhaps highlighted by the two-headed monster at running back of Jalen Hurd and Alvin Kamara. Hokies' defensive coordinator Bud Foster will certainly have his hands full, but you can rest assured that the veteran defensive guru spent the summer concocting unique looks for the Vols' offense. What do you see as the keys to this "game within the game?"

WS: A stat we love: take out games against FCS teams and 1-11 North Texas last year, and the Vols are 12-1 since Dobbs took over as the full-time starter when he runs for 35+ yards. The Vols were 0-4 when he didn't and are now 1-4, barely, after beating App State. Getting him more involved running the ball will be critical. Our offensive line looked really bad against the Mountaineers, who were undersized but did a lot of lateral movement and really hurt Tennessee's interior line. I'll be interested to see how much of that Bud Foster will duplicate this week. Dobbs led the SEC in first down conversions on 3rd and 4-9 last year, but you still won't see a lot of him in the pocket. How the Hokies account for Alvin Kamara coming out of the backfield as a receiver will also be important.

JC: On the offensive side of the ball, the Hokies appear loaded on the outside with Isaiah Ford, Cam Phillips and tight-end/wide receiver hybrid Bucky Hodges. Quarterback (and offensive line play) remains somewhat of a question mark, as junior college transfer Jerod Evans impressed in his first career Division I start despite two head-scratching turnovers. Do you expect Bob Shoop's defense to be able to hold the Hokies' up-tempo offense in check, or will the Battle at Bristol turn into a Big 12-style shootout?

WS: Fuente has historically done the opposite of what App State did to Tennessee last week. The Mountaineers slowed everything down and ran just 62 offensive plays in regulation, running a lot of misdirection to counter Shoop's more aggressive defense. The comparison some players have been throwing around to VT was Bowling Green last year, who ran 85 plays and scored 30 points on the Vols in the opener. But Tennessee dropped 59 on them, one of their most efficient days of the year. I think if it does turn into a true track meet it benefits Tennessee, but I also think it's just as likely both teams struggle to find consistency in their offenses and we get a lot of three and outs.

JC: After spending my four undergraduate years in Blacksburg with Frank Beamer at the helm of the Hokies, I have to ask: how's Tennessee's kickin' game? (For clarification, "kickin' game" encompasses all aspects of special teams. Sorry, it's a Beamer thing.)

WS: Beamer would've loved this unit. Last year Evan Berry (Eric's brother) led the nation in kick return average and Cam Sutton led the nation in punt return average. Sutton had a rough day with a muffed punt leading to ASU's first touchdown Thursday, but Berry took the only return he saw back 41 yards. Trevor Daniel was eighth nationally in punting average last year and is third through the opening weekend this year. Tennessee's ability to dominate field position last year eased some of their burden in needing explosive plays.

JC: With over 150,000 fans expected in the stands and the College GameDay crew on site, the Battle at Bristol promises to be quite the spectacle. Volunteer orange will likely make up the majority of the Bristol bleachers, but the Virginia Tech maroon will travel in force as well. From the tailgating scene to the country concerts to the game itself, what are you most looking forward to from this unique border battle?

WS: For me personally, I grew up in Knoxville but lived and worked in Bland & Smyth County for six years before moving back to East Tennessee. I got to know and love a lot of Hokies and spent a lot of Thursday nights in Lane Stadium from 2006-11. Though I didn't love the result, I loved getting to see these two programs together in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl in 2009, and am really proud it's Tennessee and Virginia Tech who will break this record. I would love for this game to lead to a home-and-home in the future.

JC: Time to put you on the spot: who wins the Battle at Bristol?

WS: If Tennessee's offensive line issues are real and not the byproduct of an unusual scheme from App State or sleepwalking through the opener, I don't think we'll have to wait long for Virginia Tech to expose them. I just think the scales still have to tip toward what Tennessee's run game was able to do for 13 games last year more than they fall on the side of panic after week one. I love the Fuente hire and think Virginia Tech will be on to big things soon. But this early I'm going with Tennessee's experience in what should be a more natural match-up for their system. Tennessee 30 Virginia Tech 13.

Thanks for sharing, I always appreciate the opponents perspective. There certainly are a lot of "what ifs" on both sides of the ball. I'd like to think the coaching advantage we have will off-set the talent disparity in the field. The key, as everyone has eluded to, is 3rd downs. Making sure we do not get behind the chains, and for them, forcing long passing situations. If we can stuff the run early, I like our chances.

If it ain't orange, it better be maroon...and if it ain't maroon, it better be soon!

Great exchange. Will Shelton seems pretty level headed in his analysis. I hope his score prediction is WAY off. He talks a closer game n then threw that out..... Ouch!

Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

I was thinking the same thing.

Thanks, Joey. Always great to hear what the other guys are thinking.

Will's predicting a 17 point victory for the Vols, wow.

I hope we can stop their run game and get a pick or two in the passing game. Some years back, I remember seeing a T-shirt at Lane that I really liked:

You can run your mouth, but can you run the ball?

With Bud's D, the answer to that question used to be "No, not hardly" but in more recent years it's been more like "Yes, quite well, thank you very much." Let's hope the 2016 version of our D is more like the first answer!

Hokie in West Africa...sadly, I can't jump up and down hard enough for it to be felt in Lane

IIRC That shirt was around during the Suggs/Jones era.

There is nothing in the world like Thursday night in Blacksburg!

Thanks for the historical input. I hope our defense is good enough this year to warrant a reprinting of the T-shirt!

Greta shirt, I still rock my Thunder and Lightning Suggs/Jones shirt from my childhood. Had to take the sleeves off and my wife things i look like a fool but i will never forget those glorious days.

Those were great years. Loved having Lee Suggs and Kevin Jones in the backfield. We called then The Untouchables at the time.

Let's Go

HOKIES

Ahh i misspoke indeed! This will be put on at game time today.

From your childhood?

smh. Damn I feel old.

There is nothing in the world like Thursday night in Blacksburg!

30-13...meh. No matter who wins I think it's by 5 points or less.

I always enjoy the opponents' perspective. Interesting to see he's calling for a 17-point win. I'm not confident that VT will come out on top, but I think we've got a better chance than most give us. Either way, I stick by my prediction that VT covers. This game, with all of the questions that both teams legitimately have, seems like one that will shake out as something like 27-20.

"Exit light..."

Hey Joey, thanks. Are you not putting up links for the cross interviews anymore?

I'll be posting the link once Rocky Top Talk publishes. Spoiler alert: I also picked the Vols.

ALMOST gave you leg (unless your picking them is more of a reverse psychology)

Spoiler alert: I also picked the Vols.

Mindy looking good!

Joey I hope you picked like he did and your final score reflects that decision: something like VT 84 UT 7. Otherwise you missed the perfect opportunity to troll.

I'm not a fan of the BGSU comparison, the same team that lost 77-10 to TOSU last week.

May we all get what we want and never what we deserve.

yep, backhanded insult there. Comparing us to a lower level team that caused them trouble is basically saying we don't belong in the same conversation as they are or their real competition is. Not down with that at all.

I have my questions about all aspects of our game, but to think that UT will hang 59 on us is absurd homerism. JMO.

no one said UT would hang 59 on us. He simply said that App State's strategy of slowing the game down to reduce the number of UT possessions is the opposite of what everyone expects from Fuente given his history and our first game. BGSU lost 59-30, in part because their pace gave UT more possessions. Obviously, pace is fine if you're scoring on more possessions than your opponent, but App State decided that a slower game would play to their strengths and it did. Fuente and Foster have to make that calculation based on our talent and scheme.

Take your logic and reasoning somewhere else. Tomorrow is game day and I need inspiration.

Pace or no pace, they will still line up across from a Bud Foster defense. I am reminded of the attitude I encountered pre-game in Columbus a few years back. Give us credit but don't think that it translates to a threat.

Caused them trouble? They beat them by 29 points. I don't see the trouble

May we all get what we want and never what we deserve.

Agree. Maybe 2 years ago was ancient history, but it's ironic that we beat TOSU in their house while some UT players are comparing us to BGSU, the team that TOSU walloped last week. (Upside is that means they are not taking us seriously. )

I've seen some compare UT to TOSU, but it seems to me that UT is a number of steps down from the Buckeyes of the last 2 years.

It seems like our defense is improved over last year, with a number of younger players now having more experience, and some newer players poised for a breakout(e.g. Vinny Mihota, Mook, the Edmunds brothers). Our offense has the potential to be much more explosive than last year if we can improve in our blocking and cut down on the turnovers.

My score prediction: Hokies 24, Vols 17

Proof will be in the pudding!

Hokie in West Africa...sadly, I can't jump up and down hard enough for it to be felt in Lane

This is the second time I've heard it, and both times BGSU's up tempo offense somehow meant more points for Tennessee. I get it they have more possessions to score, but it's almost like they're giving us BG's defense as well, and forgetting about CBF.

___

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

This - we have been discussing all summer what a high tempo offense will do to the defense, with a lot of early assumptions being similar to these assumptions, I high tempo offense results in giving up more points on defense because of more time/possessions on defense. However, when we got into details, the Fuente offense has more potential to keep the defense off the field than Lefty able to do. will the offense be at that point tomorrow? Probably not. But will we give up more points than previously? I looks like that conclusion in based on a misconception from so many up-tempo offense not having top defense, no from possessions or time of possession.

Sometimes we live no particular way but our own

As many three and outs our offense has had over the years, the D should be used to being on the field. We may actually get some more first downs and keep em off the field longer than we have been, even at a faster pace. I don't think we are going to be marching up and down scoring, but we should move the ball a little.

I'm not a fan of the BGSU comparison, the same team that lost 77-10 to TOSU last week

For what it's worth, BGSU was a 10 win conference champion last year. Last year's coach, Dino Barbers, was hired by Syracuse this year, widely regarded as one of the better off season pick ups. If our offense plays that well, and our defense can play like a classic Bud Foster defense, I think we win. Of course, those are two big If's

They had a hell of a game vs Memphis last year.

He's talking about BGSU from when they played them last year. BGSU had a top 10 offense in the country last year, that's a huge compliment.

Here is what he is saying, subconsciously:

70-10 > 59-30
OSU > UT
ergo,
VT >> UT

I agree, he talked like it would be a close game, then threw the curve ball with the prediction.

The one thing that sticks out to me is how he talked about App. St's defensive line. Said they gave the Vols trouble when they did a lot of lateral movement. I expect to see more stemming this week from the d-line and a lot of stunts to confuse the Vols o-line.

Bring up concerns over offensive line play and praise the running game in the same breath. Bold move.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

After fumbling your way to a touchdown no less, you're going up against another great defense.

Shouldn't that be an illegal forward pass past the line of scrimmage?

I had been wondering the same thing myself. After watching a few different GIFs/Vines of it, there is a distinct impression that he desperately threw the ball down. That's a really risky move. But given how hard he was hit, and how he was holding the ball, I doubt he had time to even think about pulling something like that off. He just got annihilated and a loosely held ball happened to bounce fortuitously forward.

That said, I really think the fumble-into-endzone rules need to change. He was stopped short, clearly. Recovering in the endzone for a winning TD? There's something about it that I just don't like.

"Exit light..."

True, your not supposed to be able to advance a fumble. So shouldn't it have been placed on the 1 foot line?

A fumble can be advanced (see: Brewer for a TD after Marshawn fumbled against GT in 2014). You can't advance a fumble on 4th down unless it is recovered by the fumbling player. I believe the same rule applies within 2:00 but I am not 100% sure if that rule is college, NFL, or both. To me, if it's valid within the last 2:00, it should apply for the entirety of overtime.

"Exit light..."

NFL has the automatic touchback rule. IMHO, if the defense didn't recover, the defense shouldn't get it (unless 4th down). I am open to bringing it back either to the one or the point of the fumble, if recovered in the endzone.

I guess I forgot the /s. I was tweaking the Tennessee fans that have been lurking.

Dobbs was crushed, there was nothing intentional about this. That's like saying I threw up on the Intimidator because I was worried about my gluten intake.

I agree, but I'm not gonna say I was mad when we were the beneficiary of the same scenario in Miami a few years ago (though not for a game winner)

he's using a larger data set rather than selecting the most recent point

personally i think they'll have a hard time running on us but I can see his logic being used

Sutton had a rough day with a muffed punt leading to ASU's first touchdown

if he muffed it once, he can muff it again!

He's no good to me dead.

We should have interviewed Mike & Mike this morning. Their Gameday pick of the week was the Battle of Bristol between Tennessee and West Virginia. They both picked TN. Wonder if they would feel different knowing it's VIRGINIA TECH!!!

I mean it's not like it's the big deal on their own network or anything...

We put the K in Kwality

mike&mike are terrible, this honestly bodes well for us some how

We got called West Virginia?

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

And never bothered to correct it the remainder of the show. Someone should tweet him and wish his Duke Blue Devils good luck this weekend (I cannot)...cause it's the same as Northwestern.

We put the K in Kwality

Understandable Mistake..... Rich Rod coached there and almost coached the Hokies..... waiting..... waiting......

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Did they really? Not surprised. That is plain lazy.

I feel like the amount of hype its gotten would mean everyone who even tangentially follows college football would know who the teams are. Surely when its sort of your job to know, you would know.

Don't worry, Golic will know who we are when we crush is precious alma mater in South Bend.

Fuente has historically done the opposite of what App State did to Tennessee last week. The Mountaineers slowed everything down and ran just 62 offensive plays in regulation, running a lot of misdirection to counter Shoop's more aggressive defense. But Tennessee dropped 59 on them, one of their most efficient days of the year.

As pointed out above most glaring issue to being compared to the pace of BGSU is lumping our defense in with BGSU's defense. Unreal. I won't be surprised if the Vols win this one. I think that game last week was a wake up call for them. However, contain the run and I like our chances.

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck." - Colin Cowherd

I took that as an aside, like "Yeah, BGSU was really good on offense against us last year but it didn't matter because we scored 59." Not the cause/effect that is being inferred herein.

If you want to be confident, think of UT saying VT is like BGSU's offense but we still have a Bud Foster defense. Even in a down year, we had a top 40 defense.

They are forgetting the differences in the defenses of Bowling Green and the LPD

Last year, VT had the #52 defense with a defensive FEI of .12. Bowling Green was 86th with an FEI of -.26

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

I hope that Bud sells the farm to stop the run game of Tennessee tomorrow night. I think that Dobbs has very little chance of beating the Hokies with his arm.

Is coronavirus over yet?

I think it will boil down to the O-line. If they perform well we got a good chance. It will definitely be a test.

As long as we BLOCK we got this. Let's Go Hokies!

It is a natural gift I posess to create friction in sensitive situations.
