Defense was gassed. Spent too much time on the field in that 2nd quarter. You'll have that when the offense is shooting itself in the foot on every drive. An 11 yard punt, a turnover on our own 5. Cut out the stupid shit on offense and we can hang with these dudes. They have talent but we showed we can bully them up front. We will see what happens in the 2nd half.

Yeah, I expected us to lose, but the team made me believe in the 1st quarter. I knew better, but I thought things may have been different under a new coach. Lesson learned. I was very pleased with how the game started though. It was refreshing to see the team operate smoothly right out of the gate instead of the past "trip-over-your-own-feet until the 2nd quarter" method.
Anyway, Tennessee can't score 24 unanswered points in every quarter....right? Hopefully we make better half time adjustments than they do.

You might see that a lot this year. First year with a new head coach and new offensive system. Timing looked off on a couple plays. That will get cleaned up with repetition.
Positives: Mook is gonna be a player guys, Offense showed they can flat out move the football against top quality defensive talent, Defense looks great when they get their rest and aren't constantly playing with their backs against the wall
Negatives: Penalties bro. Jesus Christ the penalties. Stroman is just getting bullied by that big wideout. I think he's been in good position but his lack of size and experience are working against him on one-on-one plays like that, he's going to be okay but Alexander is probably the answer for this game.

I just am extremely frustrated when we make no attempt to get a chance at scoring with the last possession, especially when we know Tennessee is getting the ball to start the second half. Even three points would be huge towards momentum. We have made few attempts to take the top off this defense with some of the best receivers we have ever had. Running out the clock there just says to me we don't trust our offense enough to take a shot. If they come out and score to start the next half it puts us in a huge hole.

I'm still optimistic on our team's future. For this game though, I worry that our D may get very tired at the end and cannot hold on with their running. Our O should give our D plenty of rest. The 15 us penalties that killed drives didn't help
They ripped off a couple of first down runs that were penalized and put us into either 2nd or 3rd and long. Tough to open up the playbook when you're inside your own 20 facing a 3rd and 15. Cut out the stupid penalties and the offense will look like it did in the 1 quarter. Won't always be that explosive but the medium gainers are there all day.

I can handle losing because of a talent difference, but this is now a trend with these fumbles, and that's on CJF. I'm optimistic he'll turn the program around eventually, but it's a clear problem at this point.
Barring a comeback, this one will really sting because I see nothing to suggest Tenn is that much better than us.

They are definitely less bad than us. That's usually what football games come down to.
Their offense and team discipline is much better than us. It's evident, and discipline is what seperates the men from the boys.

This is not a post-Beamer issue, this is entirely a Fuente issue. We have turned the ball over NINE TIMES in two games, literally all of them being fumbles. We've already lost more fumbles in these two games than we did in 5 of the last 8 seasons. It is absolutely unacceptable.

Disagree. This game is ours if we just hold the ball. Take away two fumbles (2nd quarter and the one Cam coughed up) and we are within 3 points with a defense that has been killing it, sometimes even with quick changes after turnovers.

Well I wasn't expecting perfection, but I did expect BETTER than this. Fumbles (turnovers, stupid decisions) boneheaded penalties, terrible tackling technique have been a curse that Tech has NEVER overcome for DECADES. Chalk up YET ANOTHER embarrassing failure on international tv. Fuente has a LOT of hard obstacles to overcome. On a side note, I feel sorry for Hokiegirl, AMBVT, and every other Hokie in that area.

When 0-0 happened my expectations were so low that was kind of a joke. Tonight we came out with intensity and purpose and when the first negative thing happens we crumbled. This team is not disciplined or mentality tough, it hasn't been in a long time. Fuente has a lot of unfucking up to do.
Not even close. jmu was an FCS team. We had Tyrod as a senior and all the talent that supported him. Nothing will ever be as bad as the jmu loss... still makes my skin crawl... They were 32.5 point underdogs and they collected $400,000 for beating out #13 ranked asses.

We were moving the ball really well,and fumbled it away on two really good drives that would've ended in points and the defense was playing very well when they weren't playing with their backs to the wall. (Shit, even when they were backed up a few times they held them.) Poor ball control and penalties killed us. We didn't get beat.

In all honesty and takeaway the turnovers and penalties, we would have owned those damn vols. We have accomplished much more in two games than Bitch jones has done at Tennessee. I wish we could play them again next year because we sure as hell would clean up our misgivings and hand them what we produced in the 1st quarter times 4!!!
Tennessee won't go far this year against their SEC foes. Dobbs can't pass. Kill their run game and it can be done. Tonights game was lost on errors and it will be fixed going forward. Despite the penalties and fumbles, I still like what I see offensively.
Yeah, I see a lot of people are blaming the staff for this one, but when it comes down to it, aside from a couple of plays (running on 3rd and long... really?), the guys on the field are the ones dropping the football, not the coaches. There was a lot of holding the ball with one arm, which is begging for a strip. Looking at you, Phillips. And of all people, the QB should know how to take care of the football.
It's just one game. But dang, if I could have one game back...
I agree with you in that it is indeed the players dropping the ball and not the coaches. However, it's the coaches responsibility to make sure that this doesn't happen, either by drilling it into guys heads during practices or reiterating what you should be practicing on the sidelines. That's what coaches do. Or should do.
I mean, at least half of the fumbles were from upperclassmen. The historic stats of fumbles have been floating around, and they show that it was drilled in by Beamer and Co. So it should already be there for these guys. Idk, we'll be able to see where this team's head is with next week's game. If it truly is a coaching issue, then the fumbles will continue.
We better fix the fumbles quick, because we have plenty of teams on our schedule that have the ability to whip us good if we keep giving them the ball

The panic out here is getting a little out of hand and even starting to sound like the Sabre. Chill out guys, most of us labled this a loss coming in, and while losing stings like hell it changes none of the expectations for this season. We still have a shot at some top teams and we can still win the coastal.
Also fumbles are fixable, and they accounted for 3 of Tennessee's scores tonight. Buds D really only allowed 24, which our offense easily could've topped if we weren't giving away the ball during every decent drive.

My worry is Bud's defense looked great for the first quarter, then looked a lot like last years break don't bend defense. Too many big plays, too many penalties on third down.
A lot of big plays came after quick change situations, i.e. losing the ball on the ground 50 billion times

If it wasn't for the turnovers and the just as costly personal fouls/penalties...I would feel differently about things. I saw greatness in these guys tonight and it felt great to watch them. You can't turn the ball over and win a football game. We can and have the staff that will correct this.

Didn't honestly expect an undefeated nation championship run. Lost a painful one to a talented Tennessee team that realistically could win out. Lots of things to work on especially Fumblitis, but lots of encouraging things from this game as well. Good news is moving forward we probably won't play any defense as good as we faced tonight. Now that we're Back down to earth now lets go win the Coastal and take down Clemson/FSU.
It's a lot like last week's game. Would rather lose one, know what to fix, and kick butt the rest of the season, than barely win, act like we don't have any problems, and continue to flounder.

I think we can have a good season without those dumb turnovers and those penalties. We can move the ball and can force stops, it's there if we can dial it in better.

As other people have said this struck me as a winnable game. However.....I am troubled by how much we have turned the ball over. If they clean up their act this team can do well this year. Fuente needs to take a page from the movie the program.

Obviously fumbles were a huge problem, but in reality we actually just fumbled twice. One fumble was a mistimed snap on the jet sweep (easily fixable). Another was Greg Stroman trying to catch the ball so it wouldn't bounce off Curtis Williams cus he was in the way (again should be easily fixable, stromans usually very surehanded). And a third was the snap that went like 5 feet over Evans head. We clean those up and get Cam to hold onto the ball tighter than we're in pretty good shape.
