I was going to type this out in a comment, then realized I had more to say than would reasonably fit in one. Then I realized I was too drunk to put coherent thoughts together. Then I passed out for several hours, and am now awake and sad.
Full disclosure: that was the first Tech game I've watched on TV in several years. Normally I just listen to the games, because in addition to stressing me right the hell out, I have it on good authority I turn into a raging asshole whilst watching, whether the good guys are winning or losing. Luckily, last night I was surrounded by several other raging assholes, so it was all good.
But that was not all good last night. That first quarter was such a tease. Such a bloody tease. I don't know if I just completely forgot recent history or what but I expected us to roll at the end of it. Then came the rest of the game, with the turnovers and the bad penalties and the defense starting to get gassed, then gashed. As we kept self destructing and UT kept capitalizing on it, the word that popped into my head over and over again was 'immature.'
You might not buy into this line of thought. That's fine. I'm just a tangled mess of facial hair that may or may not even still exist on BDC's face, after all. But it looked for all the world, from body language, facial expressions and the rest of it, like the guys psyched themselves out and got too up when it was 14-0. Then, once they got down, they stopped believing they could win. This would not excuse certainly but help to explain some of the undisciplined penalties we saw throughout the last three quarters. This was exacerbated by Cornelsen more or less completely abandoning the passing game for a long stretch of the 2nd half, whether because they were scheming to take it away or what, I don't know. So that didn't help. And neither did the epidemic of fumblitis currently plaguing this team. Fix it. Just fix it. These are fixable problems, and once they do get fixed, look out.
Now to address the good: once this offense clicks, we'll hang points on anybody. I was thoroughly impressed with our ability to move the ball throughout the game (which made it even more frustrating when we'd shoot ourselves in the foot). Keeping that offense rolling will help the defense, and lord knows it's about time they got some help. I think this team will gel. It just didn't happen last night.
Now to my state of mind as a fan: I fully admit to getting caught up in what I'll refer to as the shit abyss (thank you, Trailer Park Boys) last night. Yet another big game loss. Yet another time where everyone looks at us like we're a joke. This whole damn game is rigged against us. The refs are in the tank for Tenn. It's like rooting for the Chicago Cubs (well, up until about a year ago at least). At my most macabre, my mind would wander to things like well, we couldn't beat them on the field, so I hope some of their trash fans get beaten in the stands. (Remember what I said up there^ about "raging asshole?" Yes, TKP, even your resident clown has his moments.) You may have noticed I was fairly active in the game thread last night. When I recognized the asshole awakening, I attempted to comment less. If I contributed to the negativity in any way shape or form last night, I apologize.
TL;DR: We could hang with Tennessee, but somewhere along the way stopped believing we could. And rooting for these guys isn't easy, but I'll be damned if I ever stop.
I think we'll beat some teams this year we failed to beat the last few. One of these weeks we're gonna put it all together. Look out. Here we come.

Very well said , a lot of us share these thoughts and feelings. Better days are ahead.
Beard:
Great post! You said many of the same things that I found myself dealing with both last night & this AM. I hate watching our guys implode on national TV, but I have to believe the kids are more embarrassed than I feel right now. The measure of these kids will be how they respond going forward. There is plenty to learn from here, both good and bad.
It's only week 2 of the CJF era. There was some very encouraging stuff happening on both sides of the ball last night. The bizarre part is you picked the EXACT word that came to my mind: immature. Our lack of composure at critical moments put us in positions that even the best teams would have a tough time recovering from. This is where we as fans have to trust in our coaches that they will use these examples as teachable moments, and to help our young men grow while being held accountable.
On the plus side, we are still undefeated in the ACC. We play back at Lane next week. I don't know an injury report yet, but I think we got through last night pretty healthy. We have another week to clean up mistakes. We moved the ball and outgained our opponent on offense. Duke lost to Wake and LOLUVA got hammered. This will get better. And we can say we saw it happen from the start. But, it will be a tad ugly before it gets better.
Thanks for your reminder about keeping it all in perspective. Let's learn from this but not dwell on it. Time to get ready for BC.
Let's go..... Hokies!!!
Thanks BDC! Yes, yes and double 'yes' to EVERYTHING you just posted. I don't know exactly what it will or does take to fix the fucking fumble shit (I dunno, maybe hiring outside NFL consultants or something) but whatever the you gotta do, get it done to fix and ERASE it.
In terms of the mentality and abandonment of the passing game through the 4th, wholeheartedly agree. I wonder should an NFL or professional sports psychologist AND psychiatrist (best $$$ can buy) should be hired to help these guys. Again, whatever it takes. Because in terms of those issues, whatever is being done right now isn't working.
Thanks BDC.
Yeah, the Beard seems to have caught all the crumbs. Nine turnovers in two games? The momentum shift after our first turnover last night was monumental. It was iconic. Seldom have I seen momentum shift so completely and so quickly as what we witnessed last night. I'm a little shell shocked this morning. Not mad, not feeling like the season's shot or anything, just shell shocked. We can play with Tennessee when we're in synch, but they took advantage of every shot we put in our collective feet last night, and it is tough to beat a quality opponent when you are so busy beating yourself. So what do we do? We shake it off, beat BC, and remember that in 1995, we lost our first two games miserably on the way to beating Texas in the Sugar Bowl and ending up being ranked #10. Things could be worse.
I agree but I'm way past tired as fuck of the whole "one minor setback, major comeback" and it taking a loss or two for the team to come together bs mentality. I'm looking for something new with a new coach and staff. I'm sure others are too.
I feel your fatigue, just trying to gin up a reason to see the glass as half full. I didn't even start ranting about our crappy return game. And for the sake of all of us, can we not find someone, anyone, who can actually be called a punter?
Edit: Forgot to hit reply to HokieMc.
I don't think we can "hang with Tennessee" when we fix the errors we had last night. I think without the 5 fumbles and boneheaded penalties we would have crushed UT. Several of those turnovers were absolute drive-killers where the offense was rolling down the field, and the others were just gift-wrapped points on a ridiculously short field. Nothing UT did last night screamed to me "best team in the SEC". Not even close. They won because they took advantage of our repeated mistakes, and props to them for that, but you cannot convince me they would have won on the merit of their own team without all those gifts.
I think everybody pretty much is in agreement with this.
