OT: Salad Rankings

1) Beet salad. It is an actual vegetable that is good for you, especially liver function. It tastes like desert.

2) Chicken. Chicken salad is the best sandwich on a hot summer day. It is the right mix of protien, oil dressing, and sweet pickle flavor to fill and cool at the same time.

3) macaroni- Mac salad is a top flight side dish. It is bad for you, taste great, and compliments cold cuts, burgers, and bbq

4) potato- see macaroni, except the starch is slightly better for you.

5) fruit- pineapples, strawberry, oranges, and cantaloupes. Money choice.

6) tuna- mix has to max out sweet pickle juice, but this chicken salad substitute can sustain you in desperate times.

On that basis, technically -- technically -- isn't pie just a salad with a crust? A self-contained salad (with a container you can eat!), if you will. And I will.

To be honest, I can't argue with any of this, besides the beet salad. And that's only because I've never had it.

Caprese - All other salads are inferior.

I stole an idea from a place and developed a caprese hamburger.

Chop lots of basil and mix it into ground chuck. Let it sit for a couple hours.
Make it into patties and grill it. After the flip, add a slice of fresh mozzarella.
When done, take it off the grill and add a balsamic vinegar glaze and a real nice slice of tomato then a touch of salt on top of the tomato, it really brings out the tomato flavor.

You'll want to toast the buns to keep them from getting soggy.

And now I am reminded I was going to do this recipe to Tailgating Tech, which reminds me I forgot to post anything so far.

I've never found a good way to give egg salad texture. I usually throw some cashews in chicken salad, but I haven't found anything friendly to the taste of egg salad to give it something other than the mouthfeel of a partially chewed and regurgitated hard boiled egg.

Egg salad is definitely not something you eat for the texture. I just like eggs, mayo, mustard , bacon, garlic, chives, and black pepper. They also happen to go together really well according to my taste buds.

I find it impressive that you seem to like deviled eggs but aren't a big fan of egg salad. They could potentially be the same exact thing except you use the egg white as an edible spoon instead of chopping it up and putting it on some bread.

I know. Weird, right? It's all about the presentation and expectation, I think. With a deviled egg, I expect a side dish, and the taste of a gussied up hard boiled egg. With egg salad, it's like "here's a glob of chunky yellow shit on your sandwich.

Also, my experience with egg salad has been a much runnier product that the creamy, savory heaven that is deviled egg filling.

Put sliced green olives with pimentos in it, adds a great flavor to egg salad. My wife does this all the time, its great.

Eggs are made to be hidden away in something else like ice cream, or even to be thrown in self defense.

Cooked eggs by themselves taste and smell horrific.

Back in the day, being forced to eat eggs was my single biggest fear relative to the draft.

That's the way I felt.
My mom would make hard boiled eggs,for the family on drives for vacation.
The stench in the car would make me retch.

Then I joined the Navy and it was eat eggs or starve.
Hot sauce became my friend. Now I eat eggs but only scrambled or omelette.

Same here. I hate white creamy substances (Mayo, ranch, thousand island). I love Italian food but hate Alfredo sauce.
However, my Mom used to make Tuna salad with no mayo. Relish, mustard,and something else that I have never found out what it was. After she passed I asked my Dad and he didn't know either, but it was good. Truly a "Secret Sauce".

If you make your own mayo, you can actually make something edible.
It's just an oil suspended in a water type.
So, do something like olive oil and a mild vinegar (like a sushi vinegar) or wine or chili oil and grape seed oil suspended in a base of beer and mustard powder.

Alton Brown teaches us to make mayo.
You don't have to stick to the crap from a jar.

This is easily the most informative thing I have ever seen about Mayo. I still don't like Mayo, but have a leg.

Thank you, I do not like that crap from a jar but, I make a real good chili oil mayo that is good on homemade grilled chicken breast sandwiches and a horseradish mustard mayo that is great on beef and pork sammiches.

However, if you are going to the trouble of making your own condiments, aioli is the only proper choice. Aioli >> mayo.

I like the taste of aoili much more than regular mayo but, aioli is actually incredibly close to and sometimes indistinguishable from mayo.

It can be just seasoned olive oil and garlic but, very commonly an emulsifier is added and it looks more like common mayo.

Part of the importance of the emulsifier is to tighten the "sauce" in order to add to bread in order to keep it from getting soggy from the juices o the sammich.

I actually like my aioli with horseradish added.

Also, if anyone is looking for a way to avoid the calorie bomb of salad dressing, salsa verde is excellent as a dressing. Just make sure it's tomatillo based, there's some shitty stuff out there they make from green bell peppers, which should be purged from the earth along with mayonnaise.

This list is incredibly incomplete. Missing ham salad, taco salad, Caesar salad, basic house salad, cobb salad, caprese salad, and egg salad. Really I think this is just an endorsement for beet salad disguised a food post.

Worked two summers in a pickle plant in Norfolk making Fanning's Bread and Butter pickles. To this day, the smell of a sliced cucumber makes me pucker up and back off. I enjoy dill pickles, but any sweet pickle at all is too much of a reminder of those days in that ridiculous place.

Hey, Groovin' Gourmets catered my wedding and reception (both at the Science Museum, a highly underrated venue). Everything they made was really good. When my wife first contacted them she happened to mention off-hand that I liked fried chicken while looking at the catering menu and they ended up surprising me at the tasting with really good fried chicken sliders with a fantastic sauce that wasn't on the menu. Highly recommended. I didn't try the Granny Apple Salad, though.

Here, we have a very good look at the delicious, tender, flavorful meats offered by Chipotle (the good guys).

And here we have a look at the *ahem* canned meats offered by Moe's (the blah guys).

In conclusion, this study was done by yours truly using absolutely no bias (/s) and the best scientific evidence available (in other words, no scientific evidence...)!

But in all seriousness, that grilled chicken from Moe's looks like the bagged, cubed chicken you can get at any grocery store and the pulled pork looks rather bland too. GO CHIPOTLE!

heeeeeeey, I worked on these for 6 years!!

It's a fixed wing UAS with vertical takeoff/hovering capabilities if you want to get technical.

I still don't see how they're going to make this work. FAA has too many rules for commercial UAS operations, especially when it comes to cargo delivery. They tightened the screws on the regulations for that stuff.

Not sure if it's applicable, but the FAA just really loosened the strings on regulating and authorization for agriculture. I'm trying to get one to spray my soybean crop and before theadt month or so, I would've had to take a pilots licensing course and gotten my amateur or whatever license. Now, just buy it and report to the FAA you own it with registration info and you're good to go. But again, I only read the changes as apply to ag applications, so it could be different for research which is what this sounds like

They did loosen it for agriculture but tightened down on cargo delivery.

Also, for agricultural purposes, to be completely within the law, you're going to need to pass the Remote Pilot Exam to get your Airman Certificate with small UAS rating. You'll also have to register your craft, as you mentioned.

I know of some people who said they're just going to fly anyway and bother with the consequences later if and when they get caught, but after taking the exam, airspace is a big deal for this application. And if you were to be flying in the wrong airspace without authorization or a proper license, and cause an accident or near miss, they are going to lower the boom on you.

I'm mildly allergic to Cilantro and my story matches yours, except I ate 75% of it and had a rash and my throat swelled up. My wife loves Chipotle, so before we go, I put a cup of rice in the rice cooker, go get a burrito bowl without rice and then add the rice when I get back home. I like Chipotle, but I can't eat that stupid rice. They need to realize a lot of people don't like cilantro and make a second rice without it.

I'm one of the mayo haters, but like you said, it has its place. I can eat a little of it in chicken or tuna salad, for example, and it is a good dressing for grilling some kinds of fish. I like egg salad a little, but love it on a grilled sandwich. In the end, though, give me a really good ground beef taco salad and I'm a happy camper. Full meal in a deliciously edible bowl. Mmm mmm.

1. Meat salad - all kinds. Goose salad with tarragon mayo, boiled eggs, minced celery and green onions. Smoked Ahi Tuna with homemade sriracha mayo and minced lemon grass. Chicken salad with curry powder in the mayo, golden raisins, minced bread and butter pickles. Shrimp salad with Thai green curry mayo, minced habanero pepper, chopped green onion. Big chunks of ham with mayo, mustard, green onions and boiled eggs. Lamb with tzatziki sauce, minced hot pickled okra, dried tomato. Turkey with dried cranberries, diced apples, sage and mayo.

IMO, salads should be categorized by the type of meal and the complementary food & beverage choices. Examples:

Wedge Salad: steak, Cabernet or beer
Caprese/Caesar/Italian salad: Italian/garlic red sauce based meals, Sangiovese (e.g., Brunello, Chianti Classico Riserva) or beer
Cole Slaw: barbecue, Zinfandel or beer
Potato/Fruit Salad: burgers/dogs/fried chicken, Zinfandel/Rhone or beer
Waldorf/Ambrosia Salad: Holiday meals (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter), Red/White or beer
Taco Salad: Top shelf margarita with Anejo tequlia, beer
Tuna/Chicken/Egg/Cobb Salad: these are lunch options. White wine, beer, iced tea, soda

I never liked vegetable, macaroni or any kind of cold pasta salad. And, I firmly believe that beets were not meant for human consumption.

I like a good salad bar. Some of my favorites:

Jason's Deli
Plantation at Sunny Brook - in Roanoke
Chop House (chicken tender salad)

My favorite salad is: 1) Take a plate of lettuce, add tomatoes, cucumbers, onion and carrots. 2) Throw the plate away, 3) Add biscuits and sausage gravy. 4) Enjoy.

oil + red wine vinegar + salt = the only dressing ever needed

Anyone in Roanoke had the gas station salad? Sounds like a bad idea but best salad in town. Shell station at the corner of Starkey and 419.

Al's Metro Deli in cburg has a really good chef's salad for those coming into town any of the next two weekends.

All Right I'll throw this out there since it is fall and I like it- We call it a heavy salad- proportions may be off since I make it by eye

Dressing
1 Oz good Balsamic Vinegar
2 Oz EV Olive Oil
Beat the hell out of this by your favorite method until its a nice thick emulsion,

Ingredients:
1/2 C Rasins
1/4 C salted sun flower seeds
1/4 C good Blue Cheese Maytag, Asher Blue etc cut/crumble into a fine dice (sorry French)

Medium Dice
1 Fuji or sweet crisp apple and
1/2 C Carrots

Wash and Tear up 5-6 Cups tender lettuce, put in a bowl and dress. Dump in the other ingredients and toss well.
Eat- Keeps pretty well for 1-2 days. Feel free to adjust the proportions as you see fit.

So cake or pie wasn't enough? We're going to split the site by salad preference now? I for one will proclaim myself #TEAMTACOSALAD. Stand with me brothers!
