After Still More Struggles Limiting a Mobile QB, Justin Fuente Warns of Patrick Towles' Talents

The Eagles' transfer QB could pick up some yards on the ground against the Hokies.

Patrick Towles' athleticism could prove challenging for the Hokies. [BC Athletics/John Quackenbos]

At this point, the Hokies' struggles defending mobile quarterbacks under Bud Foster has become quite the cliche, and a favorite hobbyhorse of disgruntled fans in the wake of a dispiriting loss.

But with Tech's defense coming off yet another subpar performance when it comes to containing a running QB, Foster certainly has some questions to answer beyond just those of the frustrated sports radio callers or message board ranters.

Indeed, though the Hokies effectively bottled up Tennessee's passing game last weekend, they still allowed Josh Dobbs to run at will β€” he managed 106 yards and two scores on 14 carries, compared to his 91 yards through the air.

Justin Fuente and company are facing an opponent that isn't nearly as inclined to call QB runs this week, yet new Boston College QB Patrick Towles could still give the defense headaches with his legs. The Kentucky transfer is BC's second leading rusher this season with 93 yards and a score on 21 carries, behind only RB Jon Hilliman.

Considering that the last time the Hokies lost to the Eagles, then-QB Tyler Murphy torched the defense for 122 yards on 18 carries, Tech's staff is certainly wary of Towles' athleticism.

"You see him out there moving around, avoiding pressure, getting on the move and making positive plays, and that's certainly something you've got to take into account," Fuente told reporters on a conference call Wednesday. "So he seems to me, from what I can tell, to be a good athlete and an accurate thrower and somebody that, from the outside, it looks like he's jumped right in there and taken the reins."

Towles is already outpacing his production on the ground from his last season with the Wildcats β€” though he ended up scoring five rushing touchdowns on the year, he only ran the ball 71 times in total for 64 yards.

Yet Fuente believes that "his numbers at Kentucky are a little bit more of a byproduct of the system that they run there, as opposed to a reflection of his athletic ability." Towles was even considerably more successful on the ground in 2014, when he ran for 303 yards and six scores on 145 attempts.

But BC head man Steve Addazio isn't necessarily planning on designing plays specifically to utilize Towles' athleticism. Though he's pleased his new signal caller has been able to spark the offense by "creating some running yards through scrambles," he doesn't foresee the Eagles emulating the design of his old Florida offenses against the Hokies.

"We're a pro-style offense, we're gonna throw the ball, we're gonna run a power run game, we're not a spread quarterback run team," Addazio said. "Obviously I've done that in the past, but that's not what we are. Patrick will make yards with his legs in third down, I'm sure, when the pass rush or the routes break down, but we're not designing him as a runner. But I do like the fact that he's a throwing quarterback that can run to get you out of trouble, and he's been able to do that for us effectively."

Addazio said he's particularly heartened by Towles' progress in the passing game, and hopes to see continued development in that department. The transfer is only sporting a 59 percent completion rate at this point (going 12 of 22 against last week's opponent, lowly UMass), but Addazio pointed to the "explosive" plays he's managed to start generating.

In particular, Towles managed to connect with converted QB Jeff Smith on a pair of long touchdown throws (one for 46 yards and another for 36) against the Minutemen.

"He's got the speed we had at Florida," Addazio said of the new receiver. "He's really starting to come on right now and give us a really explosive deal to our offense."

Yet Addazio is especially hoping to "run the ball better with our tailbacks" against the Hokies β€” Hilliman has managed just 156 yards on 39 attempts, while Myles Willis has only carried it nine times for 46 yards β€” and he thinks a young offensive line is to blame for some of those struggles.

The Eagles added a graduate transfer to the group, but lost a pair of starters from a season ago, giving Tech's defensive line quite the opportunity to pressure Towles and disrupt the run game. Nevertheless, the group has been relatively stout for BC thus far, only allowing two sacks, but Addazio is still hoping for improvement.

"We're breaking in a new offensive line, we have to a bit of patience as we grow the O-line and grow that power run game," Addazio said.

Between the Wyatt Teller drama and the burgeoning battle at center, the Hokies certainly have offensive line issues of their own. The Eagles have picked up right where they left off in 2015 when it comes to getting after opposing QBs, notching nine sacks through their first two games (a mark that ties them for third in the country in the early going), and Fuente appreciates that could cause trouble for his developing offense.

"Yards and points are gonna be hard to come by, in my opinion," Fuente said. "And we've got to make sure that we take great advantage of those opportunities that we do have. You've got to get your mind right and get settled in for a tough, hard-nosed battle, and it's always fun to go against good people. The coaches and players on the defensive side of the ball have done a fantastic job.

"It's a great challenge, and we'll hopefully have our guys ready for it, and I think it's more of a mental approach as much as it is X's and O's and understanding how difficult it's going to be and how we kind of have to dot all our I's and cross all our T's because the opportunities may be fewer."

RB Travon McMillian proved to be an effective antidote to BC's pass rush for the Hokies a season ago, running for 105 yards on a not-insubstantial load of 33 carries. Yet, his long run against the Vols aside, Fuente is unsure what sort of role McMillian might play this time around.

"I think he's a little bit like everybody right now on our team: at times playing pretty well and at times hurting us," Fuente said. "I'm not singling him out, but it seems like as a group on offense, we'll make a couple plays and find a way to turn the ball over, so as a group, Travon included, if we can find a way to hang onto the ball a little better, we'll all play a little better."

He doesn't look that big. I bet our guys could knock him clear outta the game.

Leg stripes. We gotta get us some of those leg stripes.

Oh man, I agree with so much of this.

I think our ineptitude at playing effective defense against a mobile QB is the BIGGEST issue with our team. For whatever reason Bud cannot seem to get his mind around this. Either our players for years and years simply have not executed AT ALL correctly, or this is a very wide open chink in our armor.

For any stats minded guys I would be interested in seeing what our win - loss record is against QBs that have run at least 100 yards against us.

I posted something in the last game thread on how I felt that our tackling techniques have not been the greatest for a number of years.

I don't think you're the only one who feels that sentiment

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

From 2006-2012, we had SIX games where quarterbacks ran for >100 yards. We were 5-1 (.833)
Our overall W/L in this time frame was 70-25 (.739)

From 2013-today, we had TEN games where quarterbacks ran for >100 yards. We were 1-9 (.100)
Our overall W/L in this time frame was 23-18 (.561)

EDIT: changes in italics, 2 more games I found where tandem QBs teamed up for >100 yards

It's not just us.
This is from an Oklahoma football blog:

"There are no secrets to stopping a mobile quarterback"

NORMAN β€” The question is asked so often the answer is as predictable as a sunrise. Why does Oklahoma struggle against mobile quarterbacks? Players or coaches reply with something that boils down to following assignments or playing with good technique. It's a back and forth that yields little meaningful insight.

There isn't a scheme that works well against athletic quarterbacks. What works is defenders who are better athletes than the guy they have to tackle.

Last season's losses β€” Texas and Clemson β€” followed identical paths. The opposing quarterback rushed for more than 100 yards. In both games, designed runs didn't inflict the crippling damage. It was the third-down scrambles that turned the tide.

The breakdown on those plays usually has nothing to do with scheme. Missed tackles are the issue. Good athletes can make quality athletes look bad.

You quickly find out how athletic your defensive linemen and linebackers are when they have to make open-field tackles against quarterbacks like these.

EDIT:
So, looking at the stats from brockman_148's post just above, maybe the difference is the athletes that we had prior to 2013.

This is a really good pull, thanks Shoog

Some VT fans are spoiled by their D-coord. I haven't done the math in quite a while, but VT usually hauls in about the 30th best recruiting class?? To have as many top 10 defenses as Bud has had is simply phenomenal. And he does really well year over year. Eventually you're going to have to put 11 people against 11 people and that Bama 5* LB is going to bring down to ball carrier 1:1 more often than the 3* LB. That's why they're rated as 5*s.

Man, great find. It's not just us that can't stop mobile QB's, or have we already forgotten how effective Tyrod and even Logan were on the ground against some pretty good defenses?

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Legs. Legs everywhere.

How soon we forget.

I'm glad you posted this, I almost didn't even view this article because I didn't want to go down this whole rabbit hole again. Everyone struggles with running QB's, especially scrambling. Name any D-Coordinator, and I'll find a QB who carved them up on the ground.

This chart breaks down more of our success vs. running QB woes.
The top chart is wins and losses, with QB > 100 yard rushing games bolded.
The bottom chart is shaded arbitrarily based on our relatively best (Green), average (Orange) and worst (Red) seasons.

In 2012, we gave up 2 yards to quarterbacks for the entire season and went 7-6.

elegant presentation. leg.

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

May we take this chart a step further? How many games each year did we face a "mobile qb"? Maybe we're losing more games against mobile qb's because we play more mobile qb's each year?

VT Defense vs Running Quarterbacks

I had to use some shady math due to the fact that we played against more than 1 QB a lot (I took the 2 QBs with significant snaps and divided their running stats equally). I did not get the same numbers as I did in the chart due to this method.

The top of the triangle points to the VT number - the circle is supposed to be in the middle. Didn't plan that out real well.

So it's fair to say everyone's on an upward trend (downward trend?), but lately we've been more so .

definitely an upward trend from '06 to '12 to '13 to '16, but it's alarming we're on a yearly upward trend from '13 to '16...

In 2016, we're actually high off the chart due to Dobbs performance (in the 50's). Hoping this year we at least get back to the opponents average, but we're not off to a great start in this metric.

Please let's not let Towles look like a track guy today!

That's correct. Somewhere in there Paul Johnson arrived at GT, but more and more we seem to be seeing running QBs, and in 2013 we started struggling noticeably.

Chart of 10 years of running quarterbacks

I wonder if this is a trend in college football as much as it's a hokie trend.

The BIGGEST issue?

Uh, if not for 5 VT fumbles and 100+ yards in VT penalties, Dobbs' 200 yards of total offense would have been a yawn.

Agreed. I have a hard time saying mobile QB's is this team's biggest issue. Even if we are talking about the past several years. Our biggest issue has been our offense consistently. Has the defense performed poorly against mobile QBs? Sure, but defense has carried this team and even while the defense has been down it's still been ahead of the offense.

He's said it all folks, nothing left to see here.

@hokie_rd

I don't know about you guys but I'm super confident for Saturday. I mean, we've won 100% of our ACC games so far and they've lost 100% of theirs. No chance we drop this one. It's science.

probably the best McFarlane movie. Ted was pretty good, too. Ted 2 was a disappointment for me.

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

Mr. Belding has really let himself go.

I'd like to be confident since it is BC, but with our offensive line playing as poorly as they are (as usual), the defenses will have to save the day again, if possible. That is unless the pass game and the speed and power running of McMillan & McKenzie take the pressure off the D.

It will take time to get new recruits in that are able to play well Fuente's offensive scheme, even though we want it now.

Be patient and support what we have now. (We can't change that)

Oh c'mon. The O line play wasn't stellar but it wasn't poor either. It did reasonably well against a pretty decent front 7. I imagine it'll be decent against a very solid BC run D as well.

His scheme wasn't so dramatically different from what we had that he has to bring in a completely different skillset of athletes. We have more talent on offense then he will have over the next several years most likely. Having said that the offense has looked good when they aren't shooting themselves in the foot.

Haven't we really won NaN% of our ACC games though?

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

rabble, rabble, stats, 4-3, pass pro, outside leverage, spread, scheme, blah, blah, blah...

The Hokies are 2-10 at Lane Stadium since 2013 against P5 teams. (You know, teams that aren't named Liberty or Furman.) We can go on all day about predictions, projections, depth charts, and practice woes, but the bottom line is this Saturday, it's time for this team to strap up, get mad, and turn that shit around.

ACC Championships, bowl games, and national recognition would be nice, but right now I just want opposing teams to feel like the luckiest motherfuckers going that they got out of Lane Stadium alive.

Hokie in West Africa...sadly, I can't jump up and down hard enough for it to be felt in Lane

Sucks, but thanks for posting. Lane has not been a happy place last few years. Our record has been scary, wow. Does not seem real.

Yet, we read references often on this site to the "Terror Dome". It's embarrassing, really. That nickname should be banned until the program has earned it back.

Virginian by Birth, Hokie by Choice

To be fair, said references usually included the phrase "bring back..."

While we're at it, Enter Sandman should be retired. (/s, but I was immediately reminded of Chris Fowler's suggestion when I read your comment.)

___

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

Not to argue the point, but I've seen a lot of just straight references to Lane Stadium is the Terror Dome. I know in our memories this used to be true, but it just isn't anymore. And hasn't been in a long time. I'm not happy about this - just being RATT.

Virginian by Birth, Hokie by Choice

The only thing missing from Lane is the elite football team playing in it. The fans haven't been that loud in recent years because there really hasn't been anything to get loud for. But when it does get loud, as we saw in 2012 against Miami or against Ohio State last year, it gets downright deafening.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Lane used to be the scariest place as a visiting team to play at in the country. Hard to boast that when no one is afraid of losing to you with such a dismal home record. Noise is fun, but only when that turns into a real homefield advantage.

Agreed. The "Terror Dome" was about more than just noise. It was about an atmosphere where opposing teams were afraid they wouldn't get out alive -- a la Syracuse when we hung 60+ on them. That's when we coined "Terror Dome".

It's just not a scary / intimidating venue any longer.

Can it be again? I think so. But, it is as much about the attitude of the VT team you're facing as it is about the noise being made in the stands.

Virginian by Birth, Hokie by Choice

There should be at least one more win on that list, 19-9 vs Pitt at Lane Stadium in 2013. I was there.

*edit, nevermind, I guess the streak started after that game.

That was also the last time we won two games back to back at home. Actually, it ended a 5 game home streak.

And that's without any qualifiers.

I didn't realize how close those losses have been. 8 of the 10 losses by 1 score or less...and 6 of the 10 losses by a FG or less.

Most of our wins are by that same margin.

Well, 50% of the BCS home game wins in the sample were by more than that...

ecu isn't p5, but still the stat is horrendous. lane used to be considered such a big advantage, but those days are gone. For now at least.

That 30-6 smacking by Miami hurt the most. Still remember watching at a bar and the game being over in the 1st quarter.

I was there for the entire game, and I admit that I cheered when Leal threw the TD and we kept the scoring streak alive.

For all of the talk in the media this past week regarding Bud and Lefty, did anybody get the scoop on why Lefty and Searles didn't go into the locker room at the half? As I recall from this board I believe, there was definite strife between the coaches that night. It seemed to be between Bud and Lefty. Never really heard much else about it that season. Could this be the grudge match been coming for awhile?

The only source for that information came from one guy on Twitter who tended to spout out "insider info" that usually ended up being wrong. I don't see any reason to put stock in such stuff. The staff was undoubtedly stressed with how the season was going, but stories of wars among the assistants just sounds ridiculous to me, especially when the guy spreading that news is...less than reputable.

"Exit light..."

I have my own #sauces unrelated to that twitter guy, who say the Foster and Loeffler did not get along at all last year. That is my #1 reason that I wish Beamer had picked a different OC. Can't imagine that was fun for Coach Beamer to spend his last couple years with his top assistants butting heads constantly. Well, that and Loeffler's offense was too complex to be teachable at the college level. Underclassmen have to be able to contribute.

I don't know specifics, so I can't confirm or deny twitter guy's commentary on that halftime incident. Anyway, my #sauces expect Foster to be very focused on shutting down BC in this game.

It was just a recollection I had and combined with some of the commentary this week it made want Bud to start slobbering about what was coming. Thanks for the input.

And I was a student for all of it. cries

"You know when the Hokies say 'We are Virginia Tech' they're going to mean it."- Lee Corso

With the LB's we use , any QB can have a great day up the middle. I see no different until Bud gets some good Lb's or changes the ones on the field. Sorry to say this but the middle is the way Lefty will go Saturday. I bet Bud knows this too. and passes across the middle that our LBs have to defend..

Jack R.

Bud has said before that it is not the system. Well 20 linebackers have played in the past 5 years! Parents blaming the teachers?

Even when you get skunked; fishing never lets you down. 🎣

We really haven't had a standout linebacker in the last 5 years. I would struggle to name many of them. Jack Tyler was probably the last sure 1v1 tackler we have had. I really think the running QB struggles are directly related to the drought of talented LBs we have had since 2013. QBs used to pay when the had to scramble.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

I agree and Bud's defense depends on great LB play.

Maybe we should play a 3-4, then. Lefty will never expect it and never be able to adjust his gameplan for it.

Bless you kind sir!! I've been looking for a pair of tech colored shoes for the last three years, the ones I have now have lasted for 5 years now but it's time for a change, so I say again bless you good sir

I'll need to look for another source; they don't have my size and I wonder about the price. Are these new or an old model?

I tried searching for a lower price but couldn't find anything, they must be a new model. Running warehouse ended up being the cheapest with free shipping.

Got these last year, breaking them in now for the season. They look good:

Also, I don't know if they still do it, but some years ago I got some old school Converse Chuck Taylor's, you can customize them on their website, so I made some nifty o & m ones.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

If you work out, you can try these. From a lot of reviews they appear to be damn near indestructible. If I ever start hitting the gym again I will get a pair. And $11 cheaper than the Nike Zoom Vomeros.

I agree that it would make sense for Lefty to attack the middle with quick slants. Our advantage is that it's Lefty. Did he ever stick with anything that worked? I think it still makes sense to start Mook and see if their power game is effective against our front. My hope is Bud really lays some wood to the BC O. I think our O will be fine if they don't turn the ball over.

Lefty eschewed slants with LT and Brewer. I'd be surprised if that changed.

If I were Foster, I'd give Loeffler looks that tempt him to beat VT with what BC does worst. Loeffler's biggest flaw IMO was that he tried to win the chess game rather than define the things his offense does best and play to its strength - regardless of the "looks" the opposing DC showed him.

he doesn't foresee the Eagles emulating the design of his old Florida offenses against the Hokies

I hope he does exactly this as he was a disaster calling plays at Florida.

Will be interesting to see how we contain him. Am I correct that most
of Dobbs' yardage was bouncing outside when he ran into the pile?

Most of his yards came on one play where he got like 50 yds.

If you don't want to recruit clowns, don't run a clown show.

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck." - Colin Cowherd

These are the QBs that frustrate me the most. Not one who you know are going to run and can scheme against to some degree but the ones who are primarily pocket passers but have just enough mobility to escape. I see those guys run and am just screaming at the TV "Catch him!! Smash him!!" I can't stand it. Guys I know are going to run I don't want to but it's not out of the norm to see a real athletic qb type run the ball. No one was surprised when Tyrod took off you know he could and would. It's like Glennon having enough wheels to escape and just convert those third and longs cause no one is open. Sure once in a while but let's not allow it to become a habit.

If you don't want to recruit clowns, don't run a clown show.

"I want to punch people from UVA right in the neck." - Colin Cowherd

I think Tom Savage comes to mind. Seemed like he had a field day scrambling when nobody thought of him as a runner.

I looked back at BCs defensive stats. Shockingly good. Not sure how Loeffler put 26 on them.

Only Clemson was remotely good against them. ND moved the ball but had 5 TOs.

5 TOs? That sounds awful, I'm sure that must be tough as a fan.

I'm now weeping.

Loeffbro only put 19 on them. Motu had a fumble return TD.

"For those who have passed, for those to come, reach for excellence."

Sometimes you get the Motu. Sometimes the Motu gets you.

Didn't their DC leave for Michigan after the season? Or am I thinking of someone else?

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Thats correct. I think I read somewhere, that Adazio told the new DC to pretty much run the same D. If ain't broke don't fix sort of thing.

All I could think of after reading the QBs name

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

It's not like Foster has ever had an offense with a mobile qb to practice against. /s

How do we get linebackers like BC? Over the years they always seem to have fast, bruisers playing backer.

I'm certain others have asked the same question about VT and DBs.

And the answer is probably similar.

This has been alluded to above but I feel it needs to be said...I just can't blame the Defense for the Tenesse debacle. Yes they gave up plays but they also did enough to give us a chance to win. The days of dominant bone crushing defenses are ending with the modern offensive evolution of the game. The Offense cannot turn the ball over 5 times...fix this and we probably win...get rid of the boneheaded penalties and I guarantee we win with that defensive effort.

He's Still Open!!!

I came here looking to turn my day around... Pretty much feel like this now.

"You know when the Hokies say 'We are Virginia Tech' they're going to mean it."- Lee Corso

Checked out Towles' 247 profile. 4 stars and started in the SEC, so no joke there.
Will be interesting to see how the game goes.

but did he start in the SEC East or the SEC West? Huge difference...I wouldn't put much stock in him "starting in the SEC" because not all SEC football teams are great. In fact, there are only about 3 or 4 SEC teams that even have a shot at the playoff

Onward and upward

I watched their (Kentucky's) "season in one hour" show on the SEC Network and Towles can make some big throws and while his numbers wouldn't suggest he is a talented runner. He looked pretty fast in some of the highlights where he takes off.

There goes that Run Three MC offense. :(

I disagree with this. At the end of the day, you can't scheme to have numbers in the run game and neutralize the pass game AND stop running qbs. Personally, I'm fine with allowin 100 yards of it means less than 150-200 yards passing. Most defenses only get to pick one aspect to stop. With bud you get 2. If you want to limit qbs you need top notch athletes, pure and simple

Just one ?: Did CJF consult with Bud/LPD/DBU before issuing this warning?? Me thinks not!!!!!

All I know is Lefty's first play from scrimmage was a QB keeper that went nowhere.
