I was reading Mike Barber's (RTD) blog post on the team visiting War Memorial this evening. It's a good read, and I think it reflects well on the team. But one thing that caught my eye was a somewhat passing mention of new helmet logos...
The team is going to wear a small logo of the memorial on their helmet this season, as well as a large logo for one game during the year, (associate athletic director for football operations John) Ballein said in an email.
So it looks like we'll see a helmet with War Memorial on it sometime during the year.

If they keep the design somewhat minimalist, I think the memorial could be a cool look for the helmet. They need to keep it along the lines of what is represented in the secondary VT logo: http://www.branding.unirel.vt.edu/brand-expression/index.html.
Please. Make it stop. I'm ok with honoring War with the small logo. But all we need is the classic VT. Why must we keep experimenting with things...
Agreed. I love the idea of a War Memorial badge on the back of the helmet (it's my favorite/most important place on campus, even over Lane) but I shudder to think what a helmet featuring it would look like.

There are really only two options:
1)The modern VT
2) HORSE ON A TREADMILL
Anything else is really just sub-par (except maybe the Fighting Gobbler, that thing was sick!)
You have no idea how badly I wanted them to get the fighting gobbler on the helmet before it got retired. When I found out they were gonna use it for the russel athletic bowl I just about turned into david Wilson doing backflips
I am the same way. Classic maroon VT helmet, and change it for maybe 1 game. I am surprised they have kept the same uniform style for so long considering how many helmets they have gone through. I wonder if they are trying to find a helmet of the future based on the fan's reactions...I hope that's not the case.
If they read this they would know the fans (well at least most of us) would be happy with #ALLMAROONEVERYTHING for every single game.
Apparently Beamer really likes the unis we wear now. They were originally only supposed to be throwbacks worn for one game in '08 but then he kept choosing to wear them and they eventually became the official jersey
I like them too and would love to see them stay. I don't like when uniforms are constantly changing. But for real....if they actually read this forum they would know where we stand on the helmet issue. I think recruits like the changing helmet thing unfortunately.
I freaking LOVED that helmet. Nothing could be worse than the ones we wore against UVA/BC

If the players like them then that is really all that matters. I myself like the classic look, but the players have earned the right to decide what helmets they want to wear and it boosts their morale.
Disagree (respectfully.) I think players liking them is important for sure. But fans support the team and contribute a lot of money to the athletic program. In turn, we expect the team to represent our school well (both in terms of their play but also the image they project.) If our constant helmet shenanigans make us look silly and the fans don't like that, I think that has to come into consideration a bit.
The recent helmet debacles certainly are bad. But there's a theme that I am noticing here. It started with the video that Logan did for WSLS about move-in, then the story about the team visiting the Pylons. It seems to me that Beamer has a theme for this year, revolving around the 8 principles of the VT community and how the team must be a reflection of those principles. It reminds them of tradition, both in terms of the University and the football team, and makes them work harder to uphold it and be good representatives of the school. A War Memorial helmet, if designed properly (and given the recent nonsense maybe that's a big if), could be a very cool addition to the theme of the season.
If that's the case, why do they always pick the most garish combinations?

Maroon helmet goes with maroon pants and maroon jersey and maroon jersey white pants.
Orange helmet goes with orange jersey and white pants. But never ever does it go with orange pants orange jerseys.
That's it. I would like to wear orange pants and white jerseys to UVA and show them who really rocks those colors.

It's a slippery slope from a war memorial helmet, to a torgersen helmet, to a math empo helmet. The 2015 uni's will just be a campus map.

It's funny how everyone freaked out over the "Hokie Tracks" helmet last year. Looking back they weren't that bad compared to the cartoon Hokie, this year's camo, and probably whatever other abominations we try to roll out this season.
I just upped my "gift" to VT and included a shout out to Weaver....next year there may be a hologram of me on the helmet....riding a horse on a treadmill of course

Maybe they'll wear the large Pylons / War Memorial for the military appreciation game. It's fitting considering our school's military presence and what the War Memorial represents.

If they were to make the inside of the VT maroon and make the face mask maroon as well, it actually wouldn't look too bad. I don't know why they don't think of these things
