Hey guys, so, I had an idea, and I thought it would it would be a good way to have some some fun and kill time during the bye week. This isn't a cornhole contest, per se. I have intentionally mislead you with the title, to make this post appear more interesting than it actually is, as per the community guidelines. However, it is a contest, there is a reward involving Chipotle, and it does pertain to cornhole. Hear me out:
THE CONTEST
About 2 years ago, I made a set of pretty nice cornhole boards. From a functionality standpoint, they serve their purpose well, but after 2 years, they are still un-painted because I cannot decide on a design to paint. This seems to be a pretty witty and creative community, so I'm soliciting your help for coming up with a design by staging a contest and offering a reward. If you have a creative idea or design you think would be cool (or you think that I think would be cool), post it in the comments section below, and I'll choose a winner by next Friday (October 7th).
THE PRIZE
So, Chipotle isn't sponsoring this, per se. This was another way I baited you into clicking on this stupid thread. But! I do have a Chiptopia Rewards Card that I have used to achieve "Hot" status for the months of July, August, and September. The reward for accomplishing this feat is free catering for 20--a $240 value. I tried to use this to secure a commitment from Tyjuan Garbutt, but he politely declined, explaining that he had his own Chiptopia card and only needed two more burritos this month to earn the same reward, and that he didn't think he'd have a use for two free caterings. My loss on the bagman trail is your gain--the winner will receive my rewards card and the pride of knowing that you're design will be immortalized on my boards and the envy of literally dozens of UNM tailgaters.
THE CRITERIA
Ultimately, this is completely subjective, but here are few general guidelines to give you an idea of what I'm looking for:
- Obviously, the design should be VT-centric
- Uniqueness matters more to me than aesthetics. I want these boards to stand out. I'm not really looking for a clean, simple geometric pattern with a VT logo. I'm also very open to the idea of using pictures printed on vinyl stickers--pictures of iconic moments in VT football history, past or current players, or anything else VT-centric you think would be cool and unconventional to put on a cornhole board. Just keep in mind, if I go this route, I'll probably need a sufficiently high-resolution image to use.
- Effort counts. I have spent a lot of money and put myself at risk to God knows how many diseases to max out this rewards card, so I'm hoping the quality of submissions reflect the great worth of the prize, I guess. Basically, a brief written description of a vague idea you have is probably less likely to be chosen than a submission with a fairly detailed illustration that is drawn approximately to scale. I'm not looking for a professional, presentation-quality 3D rendering, but I will likely give stronger consideration to ideas that are a little more fleshed out. I also recognize that not everyone has access to, or the same proficiently with tools like Illustrator or Photoshop that could aide in something like this, and I don't want to discourage anyone without those types of skills and tools from submitting; I'd just like the submissions to be reasonably well thought out. I think you get the idea.
- I used oak plywood for the top surface. This means that the wood will soak up paint really well, so if you have a paint scheme in mind, keep in mind that there will probably be a wood grain visible, even after multiple coats of paint are applied. This is kind of a trivial detail, and I don't know that it really matters, but I just thought I'd mention it.

If the winning design requires it. I didn't really know what I was doing when I started, and chose the flattest piece of wood I could find at Lowe's (and if it doesn't work out, I may just build another set).
Can I submit a design I used on a set I built for my Dad for Christmas?

You can! Designs that are already in existence probably won't score quite as high in the "unique-ness" category, but it's still a perfectly cromulent submission (you did a fantastic job on those, though, they look great).
Fireman is going to be all about this prize pack.
Saw that redesign of the old, old Gobbler a couple years ago.

I was thinking about making a pair earlier this year but never got around to it. drew a ROUGH draft in paint but the general layout is there. Note: Paint is the worst.
I was also planning on using a light wood (like oak) and not painting the white parts, letting the grain be a part of it.
I wanted to put these on my set last year when I made them but it was going to be too time consuming to paint. I am still all about it though.
I like the HOAT, but I just can't accept UVa on a VT cornhole set, other than for the UVa game. Plus, the number would need to change every year...
In large vertical black block letters, one should say "Gods" and the othe should say "Gift"
The only problem with doing that is that they will fall down every time they catch one
But then you can always repeat how they're 4'x2' and 35 lbs

These are the ones I made about three years ago. I've seen a few with the same design, but no more than 5-10 in three years.

We made these last year with the Hokie bird, you can simply add the VT at the bottom (forgive the Brutus, my wife did her grad school there and we painted these before the trip to Blacksburg last year).
I used the Hokie bird from the team flag; it's hard to find a good picture online.
Had I not needed to compromise, this would have been the second board:
not VT centric, but we ARE inventing the future, so there's that connection.
If I was a better painter, I would have made mine have hokie stone pattern with the fighting gobbler at the bottom.
I had the guys at West Georgia Cornhole make these custom boards a couple of years ago and they have held up beautifully! So if you should go the pay someone else to do the work route, I highly recommend them. They ship anywhere too.
Somehow put the Frank beamer hype train on one....maybe a justin fuente one on the other? Ive always loved the hype train
