In a wet and sloppy game that could have gone either way, the Hokies pulled out a convincing victory. Let's all take a collective deep breath and celebrate.
I am so happy right now. We go on the road and punched our opponents straight in the mouth. The D was stifling and the O did more then enough to win the game. The special teams were pretty good in the inclement weather as well.

I didn't buy into the preseason hype, which may have been a good thing. So far this team has exceeded all my expectations, on offense and defense. Surprisingly strong performances to date by Evans, Stroman, Mook, Motu, most of the O line & Terell Edmunds. Of course, we knew about Ford, Bucky, Cam, Ekanum, Sam, etc. The coaching and play calls have been A+.

Fedora vs. Foster
Larry Fedora's offense made easy work of Bud Foster's defense in their initial matchup in 2012 as the Tar Heels scored 48 points in a 14-point victory. Since then, however, Virginia Tech has held UNC to 61 total points in regulation – 15.3 points per game - over the past four meetings.

Put the ball on the ground way to much, but good game for a monsoon.
From rain and wind to a dome next week. Hopefully Syracuse won't turn on the fans when we have the ball and off for them.

Man, some of the UNC excuses on the web are hilarious. To the effect of the weather being why they lost, if they beat Miami next week then no Hood and the rain were to blame. Both teams played in the rain, and you lost by 31 damn points. It sounds like you just got your butts kicked by a better team.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Coach Fedora gives credit to coach "Fuentez" (who ever he is), and gives no excuses, except to say that they "didn't play up to [their] capabilities." He later says, "We can't say it is the rain, because they played in it too."
Above is a five minute clip of his post-game presser.

It was nice hearing hokie cheers on the road. Our band our fans and players were louder then the t.heels....gotta love it. Only question is, who gets the 25 for the next game? Rogers? Slye?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Cam could make a case for keeping it. He was the only effective receiver early on, ran a couple nice jet sweeps, and sacked the punter for the second game in a row.

I was disappointed in the way Mack Hollins and Switzer played today.
Somehow the fat VT fullback can catch it in the rain, but our two senior superstar WRs couldn't figure it out
Weak sauce
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Our defense was in their heads. Switzer dropped many n got clobbered a couple times (did he have a catch?). U could see the heels offensive players lookin for the next hit,...over n over again. We had their number all game.

Trubisky needed to dial back the volume like Evans did. It would be damn near impossible for anybody to catch anything he threw that was in the air more than about 8 yards.
However the VT also had a little something to do with that - good coverage and good closing speed caused him to think he had to zip everything.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I did not see this coming. I will admit that from the get go. Also, I called Greg Stroman a liability in the secondary and he made me eat my words with a wonderful performance today. This game was pure and utter domination by our defense. Stifling, smothering, smash mouth. Insert any or all of these words to describe Tech's defense. Ryan Switzer was a non-factor today even after all of that hype about him. An over-hyped Mitch Trubisky was terrible, completing 13/33 (39%) of his passes, 0 td's, 2 int's and got sacked twice. Jerod did just enough to get by with 3 total touchdowns and 0 int's. Overall, I was highly impressed with our tenacity and intensity throughout the game. It was a well coached game for VT, Fu-Foster & Co. did a fantastic job. I predicted 42-38 VT. I highly underestimated this team.

Thank you..it is so awesome to be part of this site during the game and after a win. That was freakin awesome. The short week for Miami worries me but if we can make that happen..Orlando here we come. And I'll be pissed because I live in Charlotte.

I could not have picked a better time to go to my first away, that was freaking awesome! I was soaked head to toe and chilled to the bone but it was all worth it. Stroman was a straight up baller today I have never seen such good play from him in the secondary and those picks by him and Motu were epic. Evans was a baby blue bulldozer all day. I wish Isaiah had caught the ball in the endzone to tie the touchdown record because it literally happen right in front of the seats I had. Overall great experience and my friends and I are already talking about coming back for the 2018 game. ALL ABOARD THE HOKIE HYPE TRAIN!

Rough for Ford, but it does point to the fact that this team is not at all about individuals, but is about finding a way to win. They were prepared for Ford, and Bucky found a way to haul in a bomb, and Rogers was clutch. This is a TEAM, not a stat sheet.

One thing keeps bugging the shit out of me though, I was front row in the corner of the north stands close to the student section and when the game ended. I thought there was no way they would come down this far and started walking toward the rest of Hokie Nation and totally missed any opportunity an shaking the players hands. Really disappointed in myself that I wasn't patient enough to wait and see.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
The best part about that game was that we beat them so badly, the weather can't be used as an excuse. And the fact that it felt like a home game with all the Hokies in attendance. And that we earned that #25 ranking and earned the right to move up further on Monday. There were a lot of best parts. I'm just happy.

Though it was hard to know what to expect from the Hokies this season, there's a lot to like about this team. Fuente's offense seems to be maximizing talented skill players like Bucky Hodges and Isaiah Ford, and the defense is firing on all cylinders. Don't count out Virginia Tech as a stealth contender in the ACC and perhaps the biggest threat to knock off Clemson in a potential conference championship. game.

I knew we were going to win as soon as I saw Bud's war face in that one pregame photo. That face doesn't make an appearance unless the defense is about to back it up

I'm trying to find a balance but probably I'm just going to have to start laying the -10 on everything. This one skirts around the issue because you can find a couple interpretations, though one is probably the obvious choice. I'm really trying not to be a tyrant, but being that I've had to say it multiple times over multiple threads, it's starting to actually piss me off. I get that people are trying to be tongue-in-cheek, but the real politics world is a powder keg right now and I will not have any of it here on TKP.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
And I know it is for many, myself included. I am happy that the vast majority of TKPers know what's expected, and furthermore don't take the bait when something that pushes the boundary gets posted. Hence why I'm not quick on the -10 trigger, usually favoring a public shaming instead. But I may have to amend my policy.

As a small aside: I thought the swift kick wrinkle they used today was fucking brilliant. The only way UNC was going to make a game out of it was Switzer going HAM on punt returns.

Listen here Coach Fuente, you're starting to mess with my heart strings in the way you handle our team. We love you. We traditionally love our coaches...we haven't had many but still. I'm here now saying you have to retire from here, just like the former. Blacksburg is once again becoming a horrifying place for visiting teams. You have Bud coaching the defense like years past. The thing is I can deal with 40 points a game and dominating teams. Your not allowed to leave, I hope your ok with that.
End, my happy rant.

I wasn't able to watch the game but listened to the IMG call of it. The thing that impressed me the most was hearing H-O-K-I-E-S, throughout the game. Y'all did great. I think this is the first Saturday I can remember I didn't see a single full college football game. I also missed enjoying the game with y'all the best Hokies out there. Hopefully our power will be back on by next weekend. I'm all aboard the hype train, especially if it has AC.

I was watching and the cheers for Hokie plays were far louder than the cheers for UNC plays. I heard some Hokie chants, too. It sounded like we represented better than UNC did

My 12 year old son, who was decked out in Hokie gear from his Danny Coale jersey to his shorts, socks, and maroon Nike shoes with orange laces, watched the whole game. When Greg Stroman laid (or "layed"? I'm an engineer) out a receiver on one of UNC's many dropped passes, my son says "Was that Greg Stroke-man?" I said "No. Stroman." And Ben said "No, Stroke-man. Because he just stroked that guy!"
I'll be honest. I got a little misty-eyed. I'm a total success as a parent.

[And how does one of the big names with awful D not back the money truck up to Bud this offseason? I'm just saying.]
Because he's stated that he's not interested in doing a lateral transfer. If he ever left it would be to become a head coach at a big name. However with the new energy and new offense and his comments that he would be just as happy to retire in Blacksburg leads me to believe that he isn't leaving anytime soon. Plus I think his days of looking for an HC gig have past. Just need Whit to lock in CJF for a good 20 year contract.

OH GOD PLEASE NO THAT'S HOW YOU GET STUCK WITH THIS ON YOUR SIDELINE FOREVER
Not saying that Fuente is ANYTHING like CPJ, but I am not a believer in ridiculously long and premature contracts. I know, 20 years was exaggerating but let's a least wait until year 2 to talk extension.
Of course, IF he takes us to the National Championship, we should talk deal.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Someone mentioned it on r/cfb but it's worth saying here as well. Fuente and his offense and coaching philosophy has made a clear, rejuvenating impact on Bud and his defense. Bud looks a lot younger and relaxed as well. It's amazing what having an offense can do to the defense. I feel like Bud also knows that they might have a winning formula here and the barrier that prevented VT from ever reaching the 'elite' level under Beamer might be breached with Fuente. I just hope his loyalty is finally rewarded through a championship.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I thought it was hilarious that the commentators brought that up yesterday. The one guy said something about how Bud was mixing up his defense and being more aggressive, to which the other responded, "he has an offense now." OUCH. Accurate, though.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
FUENTE has been a boss so far at adding wrinkles to the game. From stroman punting, to the run pass option roll out that ford was wide open but overthrown on, wr jet passes where ford barley overthrows a wide open Bucky Hodges....god I love this guy! We are back baby! Can't wait to see what gets worked in for the next game!
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Before the game I was also worried that the speed option that was really effective against ECU could work against us and cause fumbles, but I'm impressed the Fuente just tailored the playbook to the weather and cut it from the game. Shows the attention to details
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
One of the more impressive parts of our defense's performance was how they held UNC to a FG after we fumbled in our own territory, and held them scoreless after they took over on downs in the 2nd half after the punt debacle.
We capitalized on UNC's mistakes. Our defense prevented them from capitalizing on our mistakes.

Joey Slye for #25 Jersey next week.
-5 touchbacks.
-No kickoffs returned past the 25.
-2/2 on field goals.
-4/4 on PATs.
That's a solid performance on a sunny day, and it was not a sunny Saturday.

It's hard to explain just how hard it is to kick in muddy conditions if you've never done it before. If you can't get your plant foot down kicking an accurate ball more than 20 yards is damn near impossible. The fact that he did all that in a downpour onto an already saturated field is super impressive.

These ranked teams lost:
#6 Houston
#9 Tennessee
#10 Miami
#15 Stanford
#16 Arkansas
#17 UNC
#21 Colorado
However, I don't see Houston or Tennessee falling below wherever we end up. Obviously, we should jump UNC, who could possibly fall out. But FSU is ahead of us at #23 and just beat #10.
Looking back over the course of the season, the only team to jump 10 spots was Miami, from #25 to #15, following week 3. Houston and Georgia jumped up 9 spots each after week 1, but they started at #15 and #18. Other than that, there hasn't been too many huge jumps in the polls.
We are moving up from #25. I'd say we're most likely in the top 20. If we make it into the top 15, it'll be at #15. So, I'd say maybe a 10% chance of top 15 (seeing as how our most likely landing spots are anywhere from 15 to 24).
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I figured we'd move up to around 20...possibly high teens. I would be surprised if we don't move up more than 4 spots but moving as far as 17 wouldn't surprise me. Anything better than 16 would be a pleasant surprise.

Revenge is apparently a dish best served wet! Next stop on the revenge tour, Miami.
We need to travel to the Dome and dispatch Syracuse before we start pawing at the turf for Miami. One at a time.
^This
Syracuse just lost to WF. If Miami wins tonight, ESPN will be pumping up the showdown. This trap won't snag Fuente.
Wake is bowling this year.
*2-0, we beat BC last year. But yeah, this revenge tour is sweet and just getting started.

He was pedaling on a stationary bike by the bench after he was taken off the field. Keeping loose, and I'd take it as a good sign.
He was walking on it - albeit a little gingerly - after the game when all of the players greeted the crowd. He could have disappeared to the locker room and not come out and walk the entire distance of the sideline, but he didn't.

That was a top 10 team that blew out North Carolina . VT was ranked too low. That will change by tomorrow! GO HOKIES!
Rankings come out on Monday this week
Statement made. On to the next statement.
Watched the game with UNC fans and one other Hokie alum. This is what I said after I left:
+1 Half baked references will always get a leg for me
Time to get ready to let it loose on the 'Cuse!
I was there today and will be there next Weekend!
Whole family is from Cuse & it's our fall break. It's a can't miss game.
We Remember....
We Do Not Forget....
We Do Not Forgive....
Love it, but you left off Pitt. We owe them big.
Yeah, lets put Cuse on the list too for that McNabb puke game damnit!
How about making the conference too big so we're playing them instead of Clemson or FSU.
FUCK MCNABB. FUCK MATT RYAN. FUCK WALT HARRIS. FUCK KEN DORSEY. FUCK THAT GUY FROM DUKE THAT WAS REALLY GOOD WHEN THEY BEAT US. FUCK DABO. PITY THE YOUNG MEN WHO WILL SUFFER FOR THEIR SINS AT THE HANDS OF THE FU.
I do like Dabo a little bit though
I have a lot a respect for Coach Dabo
You can respect and still dislike.
The 2002 shit show is enough reason to want to beat Syracuse very bad.
I never forgot that cuse game myself!
A Hokie always pays his debts.
And who are you, the proud bird said, that I should bow so low?
Ah, "The Rains of Chapel Hill," everyone's favorite murder dirge.
This is why I love this place
Brace yourself, the Hokies are coming.
add pitt to that!
Either gt is getting better or pitt is worse than we thought.
Put the ball on the ground way to much, but good game for a monsoon.
From rain and wind to a dome next week. Hopefully Syracuse won't turn on the fans when we have the ball and off for them.
Choo...Choo
No power here in NEFL

Yelling at my phone doesn't seem the same as yelling at the TV, but the result was great.
Nice win for Fu and the boys
Glad to hear you're alright!
Man, some of the UNC excuses on the web are hilarious. To the effect of the weather being why they lost, if they beat Miami next week then no Hood and the rain were to blame. Both teams played in the rain, and you lost by 31 damn points. It sounds like you just got your butts kicked by a better team.
Just like Miami fans in 09
They did.
Didn't you realize it was only raining when unc had the ball? /s
http://www.goheels.com/SportSelect.dbml?SPSID=667864&SPID=12962&SITE=UNC...
Coach Fedora gives credit to coach "Fuentez" (who ever he is), and gives no excuses, except to say that they "didn't play up to [their] capabilities." He later says, "We can't say it is the rain, because they played in it too."
Above is a five minute clip of his post-game presser.
I still don't know if we are good. Doesn't change the huge smile on my face.
Define good? There are some very strong teams in the top 10 but no doubt we are a legit top 25 team and serious coastal division contender.
Let's not be that fan base.
co-signed
Yeah I would hate to be a UNC fan.
I'm so glad someone else caught this and screen capped it.
I was REALLY hoping it would come in handy afterwards
That's frigging hilarious!
So this person was the section over from me and we couldn't figure out if it was a Male or Female.
In the end it didn't matter. They were just another sad UNC Fan.
83 points for, 3 points against. That is all.
That game was for Frank Beamer
how can i watch Coach Fu's/Foster's UNC post game pressers?
They're on YouTube. Or through hokiesports
Thanks bigDaddy! I saw Fu & Fosters post game as well as Fu's post game locker room speech. This D is legit! Go Hokies!!

It was nice hearing hokie cheers on the road. Our band our fans and players were louder then the t.heels....gotta love it. Only question is, who gets the 25 for the next game? Rogers? Slye?
Cam could make a case for keeping it. He was the only effective receiver early on, ran a couple nice jet sweeps, and sacked the punter for the second game in a row.
The 25 is for special teams player of the week.
Ludwig for dark horse.
Navy.
Called it.
AP Top 25:
25. Navy
I keep looking at the stats and thinking how the hell did we score 34. Then I remember, it's because this guy still works for us:

Unc had 131 yds of total offense. BudFu statement.
And I think they said Evans outgained UNC all by himself.
Sweet.
I'm soaked to the bone and have no voice
Worth it
Yes it was...
Apparently Gollum is a Heel fan:
Our defense was in their heads. Switzer dropped many n got clobbered a couple times (did he have a catch?). U could see the heels offensive players lookin for the next hit,...over n over again. We had their number all game.
Switzer had 2 catches, 2 yards, and at least 2 drops.
Thanks. Clearly he was hearing footsteps every play.
Trubisky needed to dial back the volume like Evans did. It would be damn near impossible for anybody to catch anything he threw that was in the air more than about 8 yards.
However the VT also had a little something to do with that - good coverage and good closing speed caused him to think he had to zip everything.
Bucky would disagree
RIP this guy.
That fat will get after ya.
FILTHSY HOBBITESES TRICKED US
Did that man really just call Sam Rogers fat?
I posted in another thread that I'd be happy with a 47%, 3 int day for ol Mitch. I'm good with 39% & 2 int's.
Did Ford have a single catch to keep his catch streak alive?
Sadly, no.
After the win, Fuente got a bro-hug from Foster and a kiss from his wife on national TV. Hard work pays off!
The defense just looked so schooled out there. They'd try to break a play
here or there and there'd be 3 of our guys waiting. It was cool to watch.
The best part about that game was that we beat them so badly, the weather can't be used as an excuse. And the fact that it felt like a home game with all the Hokies in attendance. And that we earned that #25 ranking and earned the right to move up further on Monday. There were a lot of best parts. I'm just happy.
Can we just stay at 25 until we win the acc? It is becoming our lucky number.
To quote the great Larry Munson:
"we stepped on thier face with a hob nail boot and broke their nose"
Couldn't have happened to a more deserving wad of cheats
The crappy weather makes it tough to draw any huge conclusions but beating a ranked division foe by 30 on the road speaks for itself.
USA Today likes this win.
I knew we were going to win as soon as I saw Bud's war face in that one pregame photo. That face doesn't make an appearance unless the defense is about to back it up
You sir, are perceptive. The face was ominous - and struck me as a harbinger of the massacre that ensued.
Damn it feels good to be a Hokie...
Hey guys, UNC and Miami play next week...who ya got?
UNC, more softening up for our game on the twentieth.
Miami. Ranked matchup on Thursday night.
Not sure who I got, But 2 UM losses gives us breathing room with a head to head win against UNC.
Only undefeated team in the Coastal...let's keep it up!
Not quite. But boy, does this look weird.
He should've said the only undefeated team that matters.
Did LOLUVA play themselves? How do they have a conference win?
Duke. Who is also very bad.
redacted.
Don't do this.
You know... nothing hammers the point home like zero tolerance until an offending post is edited.
I understand. I'm mod on a different board, and I have a higher tolerance than most others there to things that paint the lines.
That is a forum where politics is very much baked in, which is why I am so sensitive to transgressions here. This is my escape.
I know how that feels!
LOL!.....Great win. Onward and upward!
I will take my punishment like a man. No excuses. Never again!
Touche' but forgive me if I completely ignore teams that lose to Richmond.
So it's only week 6 and we control our own destiny to go to the ACC championship...
Believe it or not we controlled our destiny even before week 1
FTFY.
As a small aside: I thought the swift kick wrinkle they used today was fucking brilliant. The only way UNC was going to make a game out of it was Switzer going HAM on punt returns.
Just another Fuente subtlety that took us all by surprise and was incredibly effective.
Hi, yes. So where is the away section at Syracuse? I am on the hype train
Y'all starting to get the feeling, like me, that we might be the Real Deal? CAPITAL R CAPITAL D. I had too much fun today soaked to my bones. And then got to slap hands with the players afterwards. Pretty nice little Saturday.

Me too man, it was great that the team was giving us so much love
Love Old School
Listen here Coach Fuente, you're starting to mess with my heart strings in the way you handle our team. We love you. We traditionally love our coaches...we haven't had many but still. I'm here now saying you have to retire from here, just like the former. Blacksburg is once again becoming a horrifying place for visiting teams. You have Bud coaching the defense like years past. The thing is I can deal with 40 points a game and dominating teams. Your not allowed to leave, I hope your ok with that.
End, my happy rant.
Somebody please insert the wedding crashers "or I'll find youuuu" gif.
Edit: guess I'll keep drinking
I wasn't able to watch the game but listened to the IMG call of it. The thing that impressed me the most was hearing H-O-K-I-E-S, throughout the game. Y'all did great. I think this is the first Saturday I can remember I didn't see a single full college football game. I also missed enjoying the game with y'all the best Hokies out there. Hopefully our power will be back on by next weekend. I'm all aboard the hype train, especially if it has AC.
I was watching and the cheers for Hokie plays were far louder than the cheers for UNC plays. I heard some Hokie chants, too. It sounded like we represented better than UNC did
I remember hearing 'H-O-K-I-E-S, HOKIES! and loving it. Didn't hear a lot of noise, cheers, band, anything from the Heels.
I thought it was hilarious that the commentators brought that up yesterday. The one guy said something about how Bud was mixing up his defense and being more aggressive, to which the other responded, "he has an offense now." OUCH. Accurate, though.
Before the game I was also worried that the speed option that was really effective against ECU could work against us and cause fumbles, but I'm impressed the Fuente just tailored the playbook to the weather and cut it from the game. Shows the attention to details
Second largest road win ever against an AP-ranked opponent. The Hokies defeated No. 24 Virginia 38-0 in 2011.
LOL.
....Bro
Joey Slye for #25 Jersey next week.
-5 touchbacks.
-No kickoffs returned past the 25.
-2/2 on field goals.
-4/4 on PATs.
That's a solid performance on a sunny day, and it was not a sunny Saturday.
Watching Slye in the #25 jersey absolutely de-cleat somebody on a kickoff would be too hype.
It's hard to explain just how hard it is to kick in muddy conditions if you've never done it before. If you can't get your plant foot down kicking an accurate ball more than 20 yards is damn near impossible. The fact that he did all that in a downpour onto an already saturated field is super impressive.
You left off one point:
-Annoying UNC fans by celebrating the 5 touchbacks.
I thought UVA fans were bad... holy shit have you seen the UNC fans on Twitter?
Blaming their entire performance on weather. We played on the same field. David Hale is speaking some truth to them.
Edit: My bad, just read this thread and saw this was discussed above. But please go to David Hale's feed. It's hilarious.
They have some smart fans that have been quick to shut those fools down also. Let em complain though. It's music to my ears.
This is awesome.
CONFIRMED: Bud likes #allMaroon
What is FTFY? I might of asked this before and might of been drunk after the ecu crushing!

What are the chances of getting in the top 15?
So, I'd say maybe a 10% chance of top 15 (seeing as how our most likely landing spots are anywhere from 15 to 24).
good analysis...
I figured we'd move up to around 20...possibly high teens. I would be surprised if we don't move up more than 4 spots but moving as far as 17 wouldn't surprise me. Anything better than 16 would be a pleasant surprise.
Yeah, I'm thinking it could be a case of "both of you were unranked, and since you beat #17, you can have their ranking."
