I mean, after they lost to Richmond, the Gameday crew mentioned that they would never win a game the rest of the year. I guess they DID surprise the crew by pulling out 2 miraculous victories over Central Michigan and Duke.

I think this guy must have some inside info that told him that Bronco also likes to think of a football season as 12 1-game seasons. In that case this guy is spot on! They could lose only once this season, and the remaining 7 seasons that make up this fall.

VT vs Clemson in ACC championship. Ok, speculation time. VT runs the table and pulls an upset of Clemson in ACC championship game. Would 1 loss VT get in CFP?
This is just for fun.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
And this is one time where off the field issues will likely be taken into consideration. I think the committee wants to stay away from that toxic waste dump as much as possible.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Im not sure about that. The committee has shown that they care about OOC and Baylor's is garbage. Also with Oklahoma, Texas and TCU not being elite, it doesn't give them a chance for a signature win. On top of that, Baylor will only play 12 total games, giving them 9 P5 wins. Running the table would give us 11 P5 wins.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Disagree. Baylor's schedule is full of cupcakes and the Big12 is weak this year. If VT runs the table, their only loss is to a top-10 Tennessee team, and will have beaten at least 3 top-25 teams (UNC, Miami, Clemson, who is likely to be a top-5 team). Baylor has (currently ranked) Oklahoma, but they are having a pretty down season by their standards.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
So your say there is a possibility that we could potentially see Tennessee again in the playoffs so that we could serve up a hot steaming pile of revenge sending them back beaten and broken to Knoxville knowing who the real champion of BoB was, being forced to fire buzz from home alone?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
All kidding aside, no, absolutely not. No way a 2-loss Tennessee team gets in, yet Tennessee will stay highly ranked if their only losses are to A&M and Bama, which is good for our SOS.
And we don't really owe them revenge. It's not like they ripped our hearts out like Michigan the PAC-12 refs did. We fumbled that game away and have no one to blame but ourselves. They took advantage of our mistakes and won the game.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
The only revenge I want on Tennessee is a rematch in a couple years in Bristol again when we have enough opportunity to have our system humming. Even if we played now, I think that is a game we could win by 15.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Tennessee already has a loss (to aTm), and their next game is against Bama, and if they finish the season 6-2 in the conference that'll likely be enough to win the division, earning yet another L to Bama. They won't be top-10 with 3 losses, no matter how "quality" they are.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Assuming Baylor did everything they were supposed to, you'd have to consider the fact that they did EVERYTHING they could short of decimating every opponent to the point of questionable sportsmanship. If you beat everyone in your P5 conference (and in the Big 12, they play everyone in their conference), how does that NOT put you in contention? Its not their fault that the Big 12 kind of sucks this year, they're still a power 5.
I think we'd feel pretty robbed too if we were in their position
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Isn't this the argument for an 8-team playoff? Every P5 champion gets in plus 3 at large bids. That way, if you're P5 and your conference is having a down year, you at least get to prove you belong with the big boys in a meaningful way (as in, you don't get a nice bowl where you can win big, but still have no chance at a NC).
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I completely agree with this. The only tweak I would personally make would be only 2 at-large bids, but the highest ranked Group of 5 team gets the 8th spot.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
The only argument I need for expanding to eight teams is that teams like Houston shouldn't have to go 13-0 just to get into the playoffs. If OSU can win the NC with a loss to us at 6-6, Houston getting left out this year is bullshit if they run the rest of the table.
Losing to the triple option is not an indicator of how well they'd do against anyone not running it.
To end my rant: there's nothing exciting about a playoff system when the teams who win every year are the perennial powerhouses.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I'd agree except remove the auto bid. If you're expanding to 8, keep the selection committee and just seed the 8 best teams,or else have a clause where 2005 FSU can't get in.
To clarify to your point: "I won all my games but still didn't get in, we should expand to eight." If you give auto bids, they wouldn't even have to win. Just make a wildcard for undefeated teams that aren't the "best four" to play themselves in.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
keep the selection committee and just seed the 8 best teams
I hate the general "best teams" argument/definition, largely because everyone has different definitions and criteria for "best teams". I've long made the argument that "champion" does not always equal "best team". And based on the limited number of games that can be played, we're looking for "champion" over "best team". For examples, look at the last two times the Giants won the Super Bowl. They were obviously not the best team in the NFL, but they were champions.
Auto bids give a clear pathway to the playoff system. And, it turns the conference championship games into de facto first round playoff games.
Yeah, you run the risk of a 2005 FSU getting in, or a weak 12-0 Big 12 team with a crap OOC schedule getting in, but then you decide it on the field.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Its bad when Houston, of the American Conference, would have had a better resume with better wins than Baylor of the Big XII.
Yeah, don't care about them, don't care how much they're winning by. They chose not to play anyone this year, and they should be treated in kind. You want respect, nut up and play someone with a pulse. Hell, our game against ECU is still a better matchup than any of their OOC opponents, and we still have ND and Tenn on the schedule.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
That's hardly fair. At some point in time, having Texas, TCU, Oklahoma, Kansas State, Texas Tech, and WVU on your schedule would be considered murderers' row. These are all schools that have had success in the past and one could reasonably assume they would in the future. Given how far out these schools schedule, it's impossible to predict how hard your schedule can be. I mean, USCe sucks this year, but are people ragging on Clemson for playing them or using them as a reason to lobby for an 8 game schedule?
I'm not saying Baylor deserves to get in or that they couldn't have scheduled OOC better (though everyone thought SMU would be doing much better at this phase in the Chad Morris era). I am saying the system does not allow for a team to be in a hard conference, but still get a chance to play for the title when their conference has a down year across the board.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Bama has shown that by playing good P5 OOC opponents, even though risk is higher, it actually also earns themselves a higher margin of error because the Committee understands they're challenged more. I think if Baylor actually schedules better OOC opponents and drops 1-2 Big12 games simply because Texas/OU/TCU are too good in the same year, same benefits of doubts would be given to them too.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Another thing to consider: Baylor played the same number of Power 5 teams we did (and Bama) this year. Big 12 has a 9 conference game schedule vs. our 8+1. So really, they "scheduled" just as hard.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
You make fair points, but I'd have a hard time holding it against Baylor that the conference is having a down year thus far. Clemson/USCe is a rivalry game. The intersection of 'conference team having a down year' and 'rivalry game', for us, is LOLUVA, which has a down year every year but is still a rivalry game as well as being in-conference.
I do hold it against them for playing an OOC schedule so soft it should be called Stay Puft. This you can entirely blame them for, and I think this will be a bigger factor in their exclusion from the playoff than the relative strength of their conference.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
At some point in time, having Texas, TCU, Oklahoma, Kansas State, Texas Tech, and WVU on your schedule would be considered murderers' row.
No. All of those teams have not been good at the same time. The last time Texas was relevant was in 2009, about the same time that TCU was starting to become a school you heard about. The rest of them (outside of Oklahoma) cycle through being good, bad, or mediocre in conference.
The reason that the Big 12 has largely come down to Baylor or TCU recently is partly because of the decline in Texas and Oklahoma. (It was certainly part of the perfect storm that happened.)
If we really want to draw this point out, let's look at an SEC school like LSU. They have to play Alabama, Texas A&M, Florida (maybe), and Ole Miss. Yet they still got Wisconsin on the schedule.
Given how far out these schools schedule, it's impossible to predict how hard your schedule can be.
The only part of Baylor's schedule I'll concede even a little is SMU, but even then, it was probably scheduled when SMU looked like they might be good. But this has been Baylor's MO since they were that shitty school in Texas that was just there to fluff out the Big 12. They are far enough away from the beginning of their "good" period that they have had opportunity to schedule better non-conference games. Looking at their future schedules, the only Power 5 teams they have are a home and home with Duke, and then a neutral site against Ole Miss in 2020. Going backwards, the last Power 5 OOC they had was Wake Forest, outside of a couple of games against TCU prior to them joining the Big 12.

This is why there is a committee and not having it relied to the computers.
The committee isn't going to reward them for playing in a shit conference and having a shit OOC slate. Just not happening, especially not up against teams in the SEC, B1G, or ACC that play numerous ranked teams in and out of conference in the same year.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
The Committee is key here. The whole point of having a committee pick the top 4 teams to go to the play off is that they can pick the 4 best teams. They can look at stats, tape, or just go with their gut but they aren't bound by any of those things.
If Baylor wants to make the playoffs they have to prove that they deserve to be there, just like everyone else. Also dealing with people in the committee its going to be impossible to completely remove off the field issues from the discussion. Even if they are never out right discussed they will be in the back of everyone's mind.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I'm guessing that the ESPN requirement that the ACC schedule go to a 9 game schedule or play 2 FBS opponents per year is in part because the B12 has essentially degenerated to 1 or 2 good teams that have a shot at the play off and 8 that are average or worse. No one would knock Baylor if they schedule a team like USCe and they are fielding their worst team in decades. It's scheduling SMU, Northwest St and Rice, none of whom have been good in decades (if ever) that's the knock, since they also have Kansas (battling for worst team in FBS) and Iowa St who are as bad as Rice, if not worse. That means 5 cupcakes on their schedule, 3 of which they intentionally added.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I don't think there is any way the committee leaves a one-loss ACC Champion out of the playoff. Especially if that loss is to a top 10 team as ours is.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
If we run the table and win the ACC, we go to the playoff. At that point we'll have at a minimum 3 ranked wins on the year, all over teams in the Top 20 when we played, with a win in the ACC title game against a Top 5 Clemson or Louisville. Yes, we would be in.
But seriously, if you were setting up a better 2016 Redemption Tour, could it be falling into place any better than this year so far?
Obliterate Boston College and shut out their offense, which is coached by the guy who ran our offense the last few years
Humiliate the University of Eastern Carolina in all 3 phases of the game
Destroy UNC on their home turf in their first home matchup against ranked opponents in like 5 years in front of maybe 5k people
At Syracuse (Carrier Dome demons to be slayed)
Miami on Thursday night (Miami in Lane at night demons to be slayed)
at Pitt on Thursday night (Pitt is the ultimate demon to be slayed)
at Duke (thorn in our side the last few years)
GT at home (we could get Paul Johnson Fired on this one)
at Notre Dame (Oh yeah, still pissed they got into the BCS over us in 2000, so screw them)
at UVa (reward for a long, grueling season)

I would say it depends on UT and Clemson. If the Hokies knock off an undefeated Clemson in the ACC Championship game, and UT were to win out, The Hokies could squeak in there.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I think this statement only became true after the FSU championship and Clemson's run last year. Before that, 1-loos ACC champion would probably be left out.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
The past doesn't matter when you play an undefeated team in the championship game that beat Louisville, who will most likely be a 1-loss team also in the top 10. Even if Clemson loses at FSU I still think the winner of the ACCCG would go to the playoffs. The ACC is strong this year so the champion will go if they only have one loss.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
So Devil's advocate.
Clemson, Louisville, and VT win out in regular season ending 12-0, 11-1, and 11-1. Tech beats Clemson in a squeaker in the ACCCG and ends 12-1, Clemson is 12-1, and Louisville is 11-1. Who gets into the playoffs? Does the committee select Clemson over VT based on strength of schedule (supposedly) because they played and beat their SEC team?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
If I were a committee member and I had to pick a VT team that just beat a top 3 Clemson and lost to a top 15 UT or a Clemson team that beat an unranked south Carolina team but just lost to what would be a top 5 VT, I would pick VT for the CFP.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
In this scenario, the ACC Championship Game is essentially a play-in to the playoff, and it becomes a question of whether 1 or 2 ACC teams get in. If its just 1, the ACC title game winner gets in. If 2, its VT and Clemson if VT wins, or Clemson and Louisville is Clemson wins. The ones left out still make Tier 1 Bowls.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I can't imagine the committee will ever take two teams from the same conference in this scenario, especially if it's the two that just played for the conference title, or worse, the two that played only during the regular season. They won't want a potential rematch as the national title game. Interest will plummet and debate will rage about who the better team really was if the "series" gets split 1-1.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
1. I would say two teams with the same record, head to head will always win out.
2. I think an early loss, rightly or wrongly, doesn't seem to look as bad. In theory a team should be playing its best football by the end of the season, barring any sort of major injury.

If Tennessee beats Bama and/or wins the SEC, I say yes.

Fair question, we haven't seen how the committee would react to this, but we do know that the committee favors late season results over early season. If UT finishes as a consensus top 5 team, and VT finishes with wins over a top 20 team, a top 10 team, a top 5 team, showing improvement over the year, and Baylor's best win is over a top 20 Oklahoma, I think VT gets the nod. Who knows though?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
As much as I'd love to just automatically count games against LOLUVa as wins, if we're going to use the word "officially" then we should go with, you know, the "official" count.

I read the title, and think here's something that will support the feeling starting to bloom in the wasteland that was once eternal faith that VT football belongs with the elite. Than I read through the predictions, and even before I get down to VT, the only thing that come to mind is - these prediction are garbage. This guy would be sub .500 in pick' em. I may agree with his VT picks, but it worries me more than re-assures me that we agree.

i'd take it
Correct.
the most confusing part of the predictions for UVA is that they are picked to beat Pitt. That makes no sense to me.
I'd be fine with it. Would make our game against them a little less stressful.
That caught me off guard as well. Did something happen to Pitt that would render them so inept as to lose to UVA?
Maybe its the combination of their bye week, and their stress free weekend with Bronco. They got to ride Bronco's horses.
2 more wins than I predicted. Good for them
Hey hey hey, guys... remember this?!
I certianly think this poerson should have stayed off the boards
Right? Guy's got poanuts where his brains should be.
Silly Hoo.......not much reality in C'ville

I certainly won't. The team will, but I'm gonna shit talk other fans all day, all week, and all season as long as I can.
I would say something but this is what my inner voice is telling me:
Clemson wins the Atlantic using this one weird trick
Florida State hates them!
Hint: It has to do with scoring more points than their opponents.
Shhhhh! Don't tell anyone.
Nice to dream but we will not run the tables, maybe 9-3 or 10-2 but I don't think we are that good just yet
Heard the same thing in 2010...
You're fired
Now that ND sucks and Pitts secondary is hot garbage it seems pretty possible

Yeah but everybody hates Baylor.

IF we beat Clemson
IF Baylor goes undefeated
Even then, I'd have to say the only thing we would know for sure is that you're not TKPing hard enough.
Yep! ...And we would be ranked 3-5.
I don't think there is any way the committee leaves a one-loss ACC Champion out of the playoff. Especially if that loss is to a top 10 team as ours is.
Does anybody think Tenn will still be a top ten team after they lose badly to Bama?
If we run the table and win the ACC, we go to the playoff. At that point we'll have at a minimum 3 ranked wins on the year, all over teams in the Top 20 when we played, with a win in the ACC title game against a Top 5 Clemson or Louisville. Yes, we would be in.
But seriously, if you were setting up a better 2016 Redemption Tour, could it be falling into place any better than this year so far?
We could get GT and ND coaches fired in back to back games. That would be EPIC. My epeen woody just got turnt to 11.
Then again, they may have a new coach by the time we play them
Let's not forget potentially being able to get revenge on Clemson in the acccg, and Michigan in the playoff...
This!!!!!!
man, I just want to sit back, take a second, and realize we actually have a great shot at the ACCCG during year 1 of the fuente era....
Side note, I think the ACC Champ with 1 top 10 loss and 3 top-25 wins with one of those wins being against a top-4 team should be a lock for the CFP.
Just for fun...
I would say it depends on UT and Clemson. If the Hokies knock off an undefeated Clemson in the ACC Championship game, and UT were to win out, The Hokies could squeak in there.
A 1-loss ACC champion isn't getting left out of the playoffs.
I think this statement only became true after the FSU championship and Clemson's run last year. Before that, 1-loos ACC champion would probably be left out.
Those two examples are the only ACC champions with less than two losses since the ACCCG came into existence.
If we'd won the ACC with one loss the years we played Bama or Boise State, I don't think it's a given we'd have been left out of a playoff.
Before that, no undefeated ACC champion had made the playoffs either
The past doesn't matter when you play an undefeated team in the championship game that beat Louisville, who will most likely be a 1-loss team also in the top 10. Even if Clemson loses at FSU I still think the winner of the ACCCG would go to the playoffs. The ACC is strong this year so the champion will go if they only have one loss.
If I were a committee member and I had to pick a VT team that just beat a top 3 Clemson and lost to a top 15 UT or a Clemson team that beat an unranked south Carolina team but just lost to what would be a top 5 VT, I would pick VT for the CFP.
In this scenario, Clemson also beats Auburn who is currently ranked and could be decently ranked by the end of the year.
1. I would say two teams with the same record, head to head will always win out.
2. I think an early loss, rightly or wrongly, doesn't seem to look as bad. In theory a team should be playing its best football by the end of the season, barring any sort of major injury.
The answer is the obvioius one, the conference champion. As much as people make of strength of schedule it will never trump head to head.
If Tennessee beats Bama and/or wins the SEC, I say yes.
How would the committee value a rematch? Over Baylor?
Fair question, we haven't seen how the committee would react to this, but we do know that the committee favors late season results over early season. If UT finishes as a consensus top 5 team, and VT finishes with wins over a top 20 team, a top 10 team, a top 5 team, showing improvement over the year, and Baylor's best win is over a top 20 Oklahoma, I think VT gets the nod. Who knows though?
I like '1-0 after every game'......but I also approve of 11-1!
I'm partial to 38-0 every game, but it's probably just my sentimentality talking, bro.
Wow this is great to see.
I just think it's amazing we are close to half way thru the season and VT isn't eliminated from the CFP discussion! Good times.
Win this week and we're officially bowl eligible!!
No, we would only have 5 wins... need 6
Until UVA proves otherwise I'm going to continue to count that as an official win every year...in my mind we start every season 1-0
As much as I'd love to just automatically count games against LOLUVa as wins, if we're going to use the word "officially" then we should go with, you know, the "official" count.
I get what you're saying...the LOLUVA game could get cancelled (ala UF/LSU game)...so the win isn't guaranteed.
Hey, focus on one game at a time! Gotta beat Syracuse first.

I am only worried about two things right now:
1) Should I use non-dairy creamer in my coffee? We're out of the real stuff, and that room temp stuff is basically white out.
2) When we go 11-1, will they vote CJF as coach of the year?
I dunno, I think Bronco has already made quite the case for COTY. /s
I'd rather drink my coffee black than use some room temperature crap creamer.
Whatever the temperature, if it makes my coffee taste less like coffee, I'm not interested.
Something something blind squirrel...
1-0 this week, Then after I plan on drinking PBR and talking about how we are going to go 11-1.
So far this season we have allowed a combined total of 3 points against us in conference play.
I hope this statement is just as accurate in 3 days.
I hope it's still accurate in 3 months.
ah yes, the old "duplicate, then elaborate"
Bowie would approve.
