Virginia Tech All-Access

Virginia Tech Hokies football, basketball, athletics blog and forum featuring: unique columns, breaking news, film studies, in-depth analysis, recruiting, videos and jokes.

Thanks to Bill anyone who missed the behind the scenes look at the Hokies can rewatch it.

I enjoyed every minute of the program, even though I didn't learn anything about scheme or personnel.

A few thoughts:

  • Bryan Stinespring is still here. Of course he is dummy. Stiney was surprisingly vocal when working with the tight ends in individual. I had pegged him as a more mellow coach.
  • There were a few jabs at D.J. Coles' weight and gut. It's nothing new that Beamer Co. wanted him to shed some pounds since spring, but it's entertaining to see both Coach Beamer and Moorehead needle him.
  • "KNOCK, CHOP, GET DOWN." "KNOCK, CHOP, SWIM IT." Cornell's 30 seconds of airtime was gold. The Whips are unproven and lacking depth, but glass half full: each player is receiving more coaching from Cornell. That happens when there are only 3 players working in individual.
  • The punting segment was my favorite part. Most of the time it's Frank Beamer the CEO, not coach, on the TV or talking. That's not to say he's not coaching on game days, it's quite the opposite, but we're not there riding along shotgun. However, seeing Frank the teacher, working and joking around with the punters makes Jack Tyler's quote at the end, "He relates so well even though he may be up there in age, I can say he's 22-year-old at heart," and similar ones I've heard before, resonate more.
  • "He's still from West Virginia." Boom.

Even though there's no strategy like Joe said, it's damn nice to see some Hokie football. Grimes getting real in the film room was good to see and just the overall attitude Tyler and co. brought was awesome. I can't wait to see what's in store for Bama...

Accidental Down Vote! Sorry!

Might be just me but I think Beamer came off as a little condescending when talking to Moorehead. I understand it's his team and all but I feel that Aaron wasn't doing a bad job during those clips.

How many of those incompletions were on LT and how many on WRs?

I think its worth mentioning that similar to most professions, there are a very select few "expert hires" (position coaches/coordinators who already have a system in place that works); most are still learning/evolving. Contributions from an experienced coach like FB might be necessary to their development as coaches; at least until they are proven within OUR system.

While some of our new staff comes well recommended, it's likely that Moorehead will have to prove himself further in order to earn more freedom; similar to coach Gray who gradually received more responsibilities and eventually the entire DB's.

Also, I'd say it'd be difficult to gain full understanding of the coaching contexts via clips, there are likely surrounding factors we are probably unaware of.

Minority Report.

I felt as if Aaron was a little disrespectful to Beamer personally. That being said...this video really made me like Aaron alot by the way he gets after it.

โ€œI hope that theyโ€™re not going to have big eyes and pee down their legs so to speak,โ€ -- Bud Foster

I didnt see that...I think HFB was just coaching his coach..I love Moorehead's energy but he doesn't look like he is much older then some of his players.

Head coach coaching up his coaches

gobble gobble

Might be just me but I think Beamer came off as a little condescending when talking to Moorehead

What? I'm genuinely confused by this sentiment. Beamer wasn't really admonishing Moorehead or telling him how to do his job, he was just telling Moorehead that he (Beamer) wants to him (Moorehead) to reiterate with the WR's to catch the ball at it's highest point. He then explains why he wants to focus on that.

IMO that's pretty textbook business-leadership. These guys are professionals making six figure salaries. If Moorehead can't handle those type of exchanges then he's in the wrong line of work.

Maybe it was just the way they cut the clips, made it look like he was in his ear on consecutive plays. It just looked a little uncomfortable between them.

I read this before watching the video for the first time last night, and I was waiting to hear HCFB say something to Moorehead that struck me the wrong way, but I didn't see it. He clearly knows how to treat his coaches, and in both cases when he talked to Moorehead he took him to the side to talk instead of giving him instructions in front of the players and other coaches. I don't think there was anything amiss with those exchanges.

Okay my bad. Carry on.

No bads. I would have agreed had Beamer said something in front of all the players.

In retrospect I think it's obvious that Beamer wasn't happy with how the WR's were performing in practice, and thought they needed some work before game day, and was making that clear to Moorehead. Beamer's dissatisfaction with practice was vindicated on Saturday. Hopefully that's the wake-up call that the WR's need to get themselves on track.

Aaron Moorehead = Vince Vaughn

also, beamer still seems way more involved than most people give him credit for these days and I like it.

To caveat that, I liked seeing Beamer talk to Moorehead. It show's he is still out there coaching, teaching, and mentoring not only players, but his staff as well. I would in fact, be shocked if Beamer didn't pay more attention to Aaron since this is his first Gig outside of being a GA. SL don't have time to install a new offense and make sure AM is doing everything right.

I seriously was seriously about to write this.

Seriously?

I kept wondering the whole time who he reminded me of--and that's it. A thinner than today's Vince Vaughn. Thanks.

IT'S SEXY

We'll jump so hard we'll break the bleachers.

Scoop and score baby! Thanks for posting this. The team looks like its all business.

With regards to Stiney, the guy is a marshmallow, but he's committed to the team and the players. He's a pretty chill guy, but he puts everything he's got into this team. While we all disliked him as an OC, I can say from personal experience that he's a great guy.

Its says a lot about him to stick around after getting demoted from OC to TE coach. To me, it means he's passionate about the program and believes we're headed in the right direction. I liked him getting after those young fellas during the TE drills.

If our TEs end up being a strength of the team this year and next, I probably won't say another bad thing about Stiney.

Sometimes coaches are much more effective when they get to focus on one particular thing versus having their hands in several different jars, so to speak. It's possible that he had his hands full coaching TEs, OTs, AND running the entire offense.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

Thank you for posting! I don't know about you guys, but I got really sentimental during the shot of the drillfield. I'm only two years out and I'm already depressed as anyone that I'm not there anymore

You got that right....Every segment I see, I can't believe my time went by so fast.

This just made my morning! Many thanks! Now, please allow me to return the favor with a random gif:

"You know when the Hokies say 'We are Virginia Tech' they're going to mean it."- Lee Corso

So no one else cringed a bit at when he had them recite the War Memorial tribute?

That being said, I also felt like Moorehead and Beamer kinda were prickly towards each other. It isn't an issue, because Beams had everything to do with him being hired. It showed its still Beams team until Shane O' Mac takes over.

Overall a great "hard knocks" feel without having to see how Gio and his awful chick live.

I liked the fact that Jack was there and talking about something so important to the VT culture, but both my wife and I cringed when he said Pillars instead of Pylons.

Yeah the Pylon segment was my favorite part

Danny Coale said pillars last year as well.

I'm debating if this means they're actually pillars, then.

I sense a Danny Coale thread coming on. I hear he's still open.

I am convinced that Moorehead is Vince Vaughn. DEAD RINGER.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

DJ Coles, aligns at tailback, then motions out to flanker. Just saying.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

I was waiting to see who noticed that first, you or Mason.

I did notice that. I have a feeling we will like how we use DJ this year if he stays healthy.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

What was the video time stamp on that? I missed it.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

I think we will see a DJ, Edmunds, & Sam Rogers in the Backfield at the same time. No motion required.

Tweedy can run like a dadgum antelope or whatever. I like to use scalded dog. Do antelopes lumber? Cheetah, OK. He runs like a cheetah. He's fast. - Bud Foster

The only motion that will be happening on that pre-play is crap out of the opposing middle linebacker's bungbung.

Think DJ will be used as a RB at all from under center?

I'm not sure, it's possible. Seems like a waste to me, but who knows.

I think Loeffler will do that more to see how the defense aligns to the I-formation, then motions out of it to run another play. Gives him a cheap way to get a 2-for-1 analysis on the defenses game plan against different formations.

@HaydenDubya

Yeah, I noticed that as well. Was he writing "defense" or "depends"? Whoa.

Leonard. Duh.

In his defense, he's wearing an 8 lb weight on his ring finger.

Kinda cool to see Shane and Morehead sitting next to each other at meeting, then Foster and Grimes next to each other on the other side.

Not to start another Sam Rogers or AJ McCarron thread here but the combination of Foster and Grimes is perhaps the most manly thing ever on the face of this planet.

what about when the most interesting man in the world hangs out with chuck norris?

Not a problem. I'll actually be taking a more active roll on the site this year with a weekly front page media post and I'll be providing additional footage for the columnists. Going to be a great year!

I was really impressed with this segment and eager to watch it. I'm glad the coaches refrained from showing too much. I believe that has been their intent all spring and I think that's a stroke of genius. Ive been hopeful all spring and summer that more of the offense was installed than what we have seen and I am now certain thats the case. As a fan I always want to know more but not at the expense of the overall team. Saban is a great coach and Bama is a juggernaut but David beat Goliath and nothing is impossible. I hope that the segments of college football live where our Hokies have been disrespected all week and all spring are playing on the loop in the lounge and locker room. I want our team to come out fired up and ready to play. I expect us to have an opportunity to win the Bama game. We played them tough in 2009 and had a decent game plan. A couple plays here or there and that could have gone differently, but enough of the past! Beamer is due and so are the Hokie Faithful! Im ready for a big win on the national stage. Im ready for 3rd and Logan and a bone crushing defense! I cant wait for this season and that game to kick off! Go Hokies #beatbama!!!

He's Still Open!!!

I was really surprised at the lack of Loeffler airtime. He was the big-time hire in the winter and you didn't hear him speak one word. Wonder if that was Loeffler's choice or simply him being too uninteresting for ESPN. Methinks he's got #BAMARevenge stuck on his mind after last years debacle with Auburn and is extremely curt with his coach speak.

๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ ๐Ÿฆƒ

One of the beat writers noticed this too (can't remember if it was Andy Bitter or Mike Barber) and suggested that whoever edited the video couldn't find any Loeffler clips without any profanity. Which would also make sense.

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

Loved seeing Facyson and Edmunds rocking math.
The little Beamers are sweethearts. The little guy already has Shane's hairline.
Gayle with the Pail.

Amazing video. I could sit here all day and watch that if it was available. Things that stood out to me:
1.)Love coach Beamer's demeanor. Much more involved than the myths we put out there. Relieving to finally see him outside of coachspeak mode. Comes off as a guy you would love to work or play for.
2.) Grimes is obviously a great coach. Very detailed and seems like he can be patient but firm with the guys. The video is limited on what we see out of all coaches but anyone can see he is a great one.
3.) Moorehead reminds me of someone with ADD...not in a bad way. Plenty of energy, wonder about his message being as thorough and clear as other coaches. Looks like he will be great. I can see him being someone who recruits love.
4.) Cornell is intense...looks like he could come in and blow up a lineman real quick
5.) Only complaint is no classic Bud Foster scenes
6.) Would love to see something like this more often with a better look at Torrian, Bud, and Loeffler

no classic Bud Foster scenes

I liked the cut to Bud in the rules meeting with the ACC ref. Foster contemplating spearing the dude in front of everybody. @ 4:28

Thanks for doing this Dozer, it was awesome.

Did anyone else notice #79 at the 20:29 mark walking around in full pads and just his underwear? Haha.
