Just five days removed from a gut-wrenching 31-17 loss at Syracuse, the Hokies host a similarly reeling Miami squad on Thursday night in Lane Stadium. The Canes, much like Justin Fuente's unit, started out scorching hot in September, but have since fallen back to earth with back-to-back conference losses.
The return of Thursday night football to Blacksburg holds massive Coastal division implications. While the winner keeps pace with North Carolina and Pittsburgh atop the division, the loser takes yet another step back in the jumbled mess we like to call the ACC standings. To get the Miami perspective on Thursday's showdown, I spoke to Jerry Steinberg, managing editor at State of the U. You can check out my answers to Jerry's questions here.
JC: After climbing all the way to No. 10 in the AP Poll through the season's first month, the Canes have since fallen out of the rankings following close losses to Florida State and North Carolina. What's changed for Miami in October? Has it simply been a case of running into some tougher competition, or have the Canes' weaknesses begun to rear their ugly head these past few weeks? Perhaps a mix of both?
JS: Miami looked awfully impressive in dispatching Appalachian State in week 3, but it was just App State. Against FSU and UNC they have been extremely error prone in all three phases of the game. They had an extra point blocked against the 'Noles that likely cost them a chance to force overtime. Against UNC they had an early field goal blocked, and had a kick returner run out of bounds at the 3-yard line. And the mistakes are not just on special teams. Costly penalties, bad turnovers, and missed assignments in the defensive back field as well as the offensive line have hurt the Hurricanes bad. More than anything they have beat themselves over the past 2 weeks. In order to get back to winning games, that has to be corrected.
JC: The Al Golden era came to an unceremonious end last October just a day after the Canes suffered an embarrassing 58-0 home loss to Clemson. A national coaching search commenced, and Miami athletic director Blake James ultimately handpicked Mark Richt to take over at the U. What was your take on the Richt hire? Were Miami fans hoping for an even bigger name, or did James hit a home run in bringing Richt - a former Miami quarterback under Howard Schnellenberger - back to South Beach?
JS: I love the Richt hire. The man regularly won 10 games in the SEC, and he is an alum. Two major pluses. He hit a home run in hiring both DC Manny Diaz and D-Line Coach Craig Kuligowski to his staff. I think Richt will ultimately succeed when he has more time to change the culture, and bring in some better recruits. After two consecutive losses, I am surprised that a very uneasy fan base has not clamored that the program did not go after Butch Davis or a bigger name. But Richt was an obvious choice in my opinion for many reasons. I'd like to see where he has UM in 2 years, before putting final judgment on the hire.
JC: With Richt taking over play-calling duties, what kind of changes have you seen from Miami's offensive system? Brad Kaaya and Stacy Coley are clearly the big names, but who else should Hokies fans keep an eye on Thursday night?
JS: Richt has really stressed the run, and the 1-2 combo of Mark Walton and Joe Yearby at RB has been very effective. When Miami protects Kaaya well, he can find a plethora of talented targets like TE David Njoku and freshman WR Ahmmon Richards. The offensive line play has been at times porous though, and Kaaya has taken a beating. As a result his accuracy hasn't always been what 'Canes fans are used to. The key to me is the play of the guys upfront. If the offensive line can do their jobs, anything Richt calls will be successful, given the talent Miami has at the skill positions.
JC: While the Miami offense has struggled over the past few weeks, the young Manny Diaz defense has been consistently solid, most recently limiting North Carolina to just 20 points (and zero in the second half). Led by an alarming number of true freshman, what's the key for the Canes to slow down what has the potential to be a potent offensive attack from the Hokies? Do you see another low-scoring game playing out for Miami?
JS: Well the D has been pretty solid. They occasionally blow a coverage, though. Kendrick Norton, Chad Thomas, and freshman Joe Jackson have been very stout along the front 4. Two true freshmen LB's in Michael Pinckney and Shaq Quarterman have also been outstanding. And senior Corn Elder might be playing his way to a high draft pick at CB. UM just needs to continue to attack, and clean up some mental errors, and their D can play with almost any offense in the country. I think Thursday's game will be played somewhere in the 20's for both teams.
JC: With Tech's loss to Syracuse and North Carolina taking down the Canes, the top of the ACC Coastal Division has once again fallen into a jumbled mess. Thursday night's game will make the waters less murky, but as it stands currently, how would you handicap the Coastal race?
JS: Oh, the ACC Costal...the most unpredictable division in all of the power conferences. UNC at 3-1 and with a relatively easy schedule (minus NC State) is the front-runner in my opinion. If Virginia Tech can get the win this week against the Hurricanes they have a shot. Their game next week at Pitt will also be key to their chances. The fact that they have the tiebreaker against the Heels gives them a nice inside edge as well.
JC: Time to put you on the spot: who wins Thursday night, and why? In other words, is the U back, or does Thursday night in Blacksburg become a real thing again?
JS: I think Virginia Tech plays well with the home crowd and this being a night game. Miami's backs are against the wall, but they have a lot of injuries and uncertainty right now. Hokies in a tight one, 28-24.

Wait a second... That Syracuse Q&A ended with picking us as well... This is a bad omen. I demand that you find someone who is drinking the Kool-aid! /s
Great Q&A! Keep 'em coming.
Corn Elder? Must be related to Cartoons Plural.
He was destined for Nebraska glory, but instead he spread his Ibis wings and flew down south.
What?
You know I could talk about Fudge all day.

Enjoyed the article. That was a pretty even handed bunch of responses.
Is Butch Davis really that much of a bigger name than Mark Richt? I get Davis has history at Miami but were they really trying to hire him?
I had the same reaction. Other than the 2000 season in Miami I always felt he was good-not-great. And I'm still skeptical that he wasn't aware of the academic mess going on at UNCheat. To put it plainly, as a VT fan I would rather they had hired Butch than Richt.
I will give Butch Davis credit for assembling quite possibly the most impressive roster full of NFL-caliber talent ever on a college team. I honestly don't think that team needed much coaching, they just needed someone to keep them in line. Larry Coker definitely benefited from Davis' recruiting but eventually let the team spiral into undisciplined chaos.
Both teams have some injuries to deal with this week. Being without Ekanem and Nigel would be huge, but Miami has a few defensive linemen injured as well. Tough game to pick, I just hope we can get out to a hot start, we do better when that happens.
so, what you're saying is that with defensive injuries, it's up to the offense to make sure they score more than the bad guys. Sure, no problem...SMH
i am nervous about this game
I was nervous about Liberty.
Damn, cane beat writer KOD
If there was a game as a total toss up, I would have to pick this one . Stopping the run is our strength(except running qb). Motu and Edmunds will need to have a big day of making their correct reads and making tackles.Ken and Nigel are both key players in run stop and pass rush.
On offense I'm just looking forward to seeing our run game being a key component and therefore getting our play action going and taking advantage of some of their younger players .
And both are injured and listed as questionable. This creates a lot of uncertainty about our defense's ability to shut down Miami's running game.
I think missing Nigel is huge, but if Settle and Walker are healthy, we should be okay in the middle. What gives me hope is the improvement of Moto. The 2014 Miami game they abused Moto, I think he will be better prepared. Interested to see how Tremaine handles a more pro style rushing attack as well.
I love Nigel's game this year he doesn't get talked about enough . Knowing that we have walker and settle after makes me feel a little better ,but Ken is the big one . I'm worried about hill losing containment or overpursing and not setting the edge .
Nigel is playing well in ways that don't include stats as are all the inside guys. Statistically Nigels stats are about equal to others it's the amount of rest that will be noticed imo. What SS is able to contribute will be big if Nigel can't go.
I found this interesting. I wonder what he means by better recruits? Miami always pulls in talent so I assume he means more than just talent. It just seems like an odd things to say about Miami's recruiting.
maybe he meant better suited to Richt's scheme?
Richt's scheme is the run the ball and set up play action. He's not a spread guy. He has a roster full of talented RBs, an NFL caliber QB, and a bevy of talent at WR. My thought was he is looking for more character type guys, but Richt was recruiting a lot of the same guys that are current on UMs roster, so I don't know if that's it either.
Just an odd comment. I'd love to hear him expand on it.
I think it might have just been the generic, once we recruit better we will play better comment. They have good talent now, but their ceiling for talent is unfortunately much higher.
You're probably right. As an outside I've never thought Miami had a talent problem. They've always seemed to have a discipline and "playing as a team" problem. I think Richt can fix those issues but time will tell.
Its going to be a mix of both I think. You're right in that Miami certainly never had a talent problem. The talent they had drafted the last two years alone makes their 10-10 record with Golden pathetic. I don't know if Richt is going to overachieve with any talent they have, but he won't underachieve at the level that Golden did.
On top of that, Richt can probably get the teams talent closer to a top 10 roster. Right now they are maybe top 25. Richt definitely isn't a scheme guy, so I expect a lot of eggs in the recruiting basket.
Agreed on all fronts. Their last 2 recruiting classes were lower ranked than I thought, but I think their overall talent is more top 15. Either way Golden did a crap job. Just for reference here are their class ranking per 247:
2017: 12
2016: 22
2015: 26
2014: 12
2013: 14
247 has a team talent ranking now. Not 100% accurate, but gives a pretty good picture

Thanks for sharing, I didn't know they had that. Interesting to see that vs how teams like USC, LSU, and ND are actually performing. I don't know if it's possible but I'd be interested to see something like this based off of a revised star ranking done based off how the players develop instead of their HS star rating.
unfortunately, they have NO ceiling for talent. Sky's the limit.
Actually a little surprised he didn't pick Miami. I am nervous for this game.
I think most of us are nervous, or unsure how to feel about this game. The Tennessee loss was different because Tennessee was an objectively very talented team, plus the five fumbles skewed what otherwise would have been a much closer game, perhaps even a win.
The Syracuse loss was much different, we had a really uneven performance against a team that isn't great. Sometimes that's just how football goes, so I'm hoping that last week was more of an anomaly, and that this team won't have another performance that flat this season.
