Hokies Blast Miami 37-16, Sing Tech Triumph

Music to Hokie Nation's ears.

Virginia Tech crushed the Hurricanes and serenaded Lane Stadium after a resounding 37-16 victory.

Hell yeah

I love love love this new tradition. I hope it sticks around.

Deposit whiskey, receive wisdom.

Coach Fuente definitely loves tradition, and keeping the team connected witth the fans.

A mastermind, indeed!

I love the new traditions and the fan interaction. The players genuinely seem to be having fun.

When our section got up to leave after the game ended, everyone stopped and watched the players sing with the band and then run down to the other end and celebrate with the Corps. Once the players headed for the locker room, the line started moving again. It was great to witness.

Hoping they find their way first to the south endzone once or twice for Tech Triumph. There's that other band on the south side. And a huge chunk of folks that we can guarantee know the lyrics. (or have they done that already?)

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

If the crowd learns the words and stays to sing along... that would be something pretty cool or whatever the word is now

I agree that would be awesome to have 66k+ singing Tech Triumph. aTm always impresses me with how unified their crowd is singing their fight song.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

I've always wanted to go to a game at Kyle Field to Saw Em Off. Easily my favorite non-Tech tradition. (Skip to 1:35)

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

I thought the kids were saying "swell" these days.

I learned it after the team first sang at the BC game for this very reason!

Hey recruits...notice how we don't have to rush the field after beating Miami.

Great game. No complaints about a 21 point win over "da U" on a prime time televised matchup.

Shout outs to: Jerod Evans, Sam Rogers (thought his first catch changed the momentum of the game), Travon, Bucky, Woody Barron (probably acc DL of the week with that stat line) and Tremaine Edmunds. I knew tremaine had serious potential, but thought he'd have a hard time this year. He started out slow, but his athleticism is showing through and it feels like he is everywhere. As much as I dislike motu's play at time too he made some huge plays in the pass game in 1 on 1 coverage.

Oh and both kickers. Ludwig and Slye had probably their best games of their VT career.

Ludwig deserves the number 25 next week.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Many people at our post game tailgate were saying this. He was dominant in his punting yesterday. That 62 yarder that went 1 yard in the endzone was a beaut (just went a ...liiitttle... bit too far). He had several others in the high 40s that had Miami returner fair catch with as many as 5 VT guys standing (and I mean standing!) right in his face.

I'm just glad VT didn't wait to make a statement, they had one out on Twitter hours before kickoff.

Passion needs to have self control.....

Not a great look but there are dumbasses in every crowd. At least the school distanced itself immediately after they realized what was there.

Didn't stop the outcry on twitter. Most interestingly were a couple WVU sites trying to claim the permanent moral high ground that their fan base has over ours. And of course the Miami news sites who were already condemning the entire Hokie Nation over it who reported on it before the game but didn't show the outrage until after.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

It's nice they posted all the tweets from Miami condemning the sign, but that's to be expected. If I'd seen it before this morning I'd have condemned it as well. (which I did when I saw it on David Hale's twitter)

Just asking for a little more balance.

It's not news if it's not sensationalized

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I think an appropriate punishment would be whoever made the sign be forced to apologize to the Fernandez family. It can't be overstated the impact JF had on the Miami community, and to see a VT student(s) make fun of his death is quite disturbing and just plain classless in every aspect.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

No guarantee it's a student. But, if it is, I agree with you.

Forced by whom?

By anyone who has influence over this young person! An apology for that kid of offense could be a powerful lesson in decency. It's called being human.

"Don't go to, go through"

Ugh god damn it, guys. I literally spent all day yesterday and the day before arguing with people that Tech students weren't all disrespectful clowns (note: this argument sprouted out of the complaints over the VS concert). Then some of our people go and do this? Absolutely ridiculous and if these guys TKP (and I very much hope they do), you are a complete embarrassment to yourselves, the team, and the University as a whole. This demonstrates a complete lack of class at any level. Especially since we are Hokies and are probably more familiar with tragedy than most college students, although I'm sure none of them are old enough to have been on campus for April 16 or Officer Crouse. I hope that once you're done sobering up today you have time to reflect on just what this sign means and the disrespect it contains and are filled with nothing but regret. I hope that you can find it in yourselves to offer an apology to the Fernandez family and both of the Miami and Tech communities. I have absolutely nothing but disdain for you. You are not Hokies.

Do I like this sign? Nope. Would I make this sign? Nope. Does this guy have the right to be a douche? Yep. In today's age of instant gratification and over reaction you also have to "reign in" your emotions when passing judgement. From what I hear the only thing holding us back from winning a Natty is our lack of passion for football. "Total BS". But is this sign really worth all this fuss? Learn to let things go and not get so torn up. Let the family get their 2 cents worth out there, don't be an internet crusader, You'll live a lot happier. All this vitriol over a shitty sign is humorious.

It is a natural gift I posess to create friction in sensitive situations.

Do I like this post? Nope. Would I write this post? Nope. Do I support your right to post? Yep. But I also respect those that have a moral compass that says this sign crosses the line of human decency. If you do not share that belief then at least give those that do, the courtesy of standing up against it. This is how our social norms are built.

"Don't go to, go through"

Look, you all know me, I like to complain and overreact sometimes... its true, its true... But lets take a step back here and let cooler heads prevail.

College kids are immature pricks who are sequestered away from society as they learn how to be a functioning member of that society. It should surprise nobody that an overly harsh completely unacceptable thing was said and done by college students. I know I made some jokes in college that, looking back now, are completely and utterly cringe worthy. Was this bad? Yes, but lets not get the pitchforks and torches our trying to out those who did this, putting a complete black eye on their record when they're looking for future employment because of a stupid ass thing they did in college, an area where we all did some really stupid ass things. The school already said it wasn't an acceptable thing, and distanced itself from it, and that should be that. We don't need a public flogging over this.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Well said sir! All this talk about public apologies and shaming people just makes me question peoples states of mind. Get off the internet and go outside, take a few deep breaths and think about what's truly important. This sign will be last on the list, I promise you. This holier than thou attitude turns me off weather it's at work, home, church, etc... I was in Birmingham Alabama for the Iron bowl. After Alabama lost a female shot another female in the face because she said "oh well better luck next year" and the other female thought she wasn't a true Alabama fan. Every fan base has its bad apples, it's a fact.

It is a natural gift I posess to create friction in sensitive situations.

What you might be missing is that the whole trick of how people (and college students too!) learn what behavior to do more or less of is what the society around them shames or rewards them for. So let's not go overboard, but hell yeah we all have a responsibility to say something about BS like that banner.

Tacit approval via silence just sends the message that it's ok to do more of that.

Absolutely! Make it very clear we're not ok with it. Yes, I think that part is a really good idea. But lets not allow it to get to where we hunt them down and drag them out for a public flogging. That doesn't really set a great precedence.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Okay, fine. Drop the bit about apologizing to the Miami and Tech communities. I still think they owe an apology to the Fernandez family and, athough I guess I never really specified in my original comment or the follow up, a private one would do. I'm not going to hunt them down for that, I don't think any of us on here would, but I do think it should happen

I don't want to go overboard here, and maybe that's how I came across and if so I'm sorry, but I do want people (and specifically the people who made the banner) to know that it wasn't okay and that sort of behavior is contradictory to everything it means to be a Hokie.

Well said!!!!!

"Don't go to, go through"

Alum, I'm going to apologize because I'm going to do my best to reply to both comments because you both make valid points that I, obviously, disagree with. So some of the things in this comment aren't necessarily a reply to yours but, for simplicity's sake, I'd like to keep all of this together. Also have a leg.

From Hillbilly Hamlet's comment:

Does this guy have the right to be a douche? Yep.

And I am absolutely within my rights to call him/them out on his/their bull. Disrespect and doucheyness (douchiness? douchey-ness?) are disrespect and....however you want to spell that. Absolutely within your rights, still absolutely wrong. If calling them out on that makes me an "internet crusader" then oh well.

From Alum's comment:

It should surprise nobody that an overly harsh completely unacceptable thing was said and done by college students

Being a college student doesn't give anyone a free pass for anything (except Victoria's Secret concerts, apparently. And I suppose free lottery tickets to games.....anyway). Until very recently, I was a student at Tech. Did I make some really, really tasteless jokes? Yup. In the privacy of my own home with a group of close friends who knew I was joking and weren't going to spread it around. I would never have made those jokes in a public setting where someone could hear me and get offended because I knew that it would be a really bad look for myself and those around me. I would never have painted any of them on a sign to hang out in front of my house for literally everyone to see. Why? Because I'm not a shitty person. If they didn't want this to be seen, if they didn't want this to have any negative effects on them, then they shouldn't have put it up.

It really is as simple as that. If you don't want to be known as a douche and don't want those douchey things to affect you in the future, then don't do douchey things. I don't think it takes 4/5 years of a college education to learn that.

Edited to add: Look, at the end of the day this has no real effect on me, that's correct and we should all be happy we beat Miami. And I am, believe me, I was absolutely thrilled watching the game last night. But actions like these tarnish, in however small or large a way, the name "Hokie" which I take tremendous pride in calling myself. So yeah, I feel completely justified in calling them out.

yep. Some people do stupid stuff in college, but you know what? Not everyone. Each person has a choice to make and being a college student doesn't absolve you of the responsibility to make choices well.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

This is perfectly stated. It reminds me of that feeling I get when someone is weaving in and out of traffic and cutting people off while driving back to 81 after a game. We're all Hokies, but some of us are still wrapped up in our own little selfish worlds at times.

You have the right to call them out all you want. I was just giving advice on how to live life somewhat less stressful. I don't make statements among friends or in a private setting I wouldn't make in public and vice versa. Does it matter if your a dick in public or private? You're still a dick either way, right? I don't care what others think, I care what I think. Being a good or bad person doesn't start or end with what you act like in public or what sign you post up outside your house. It starts with how you truly feel about a subject and I respect a person who is blatantly obvious about how they feel than a fake ass "nice to your face but make jokes amongst friends" bullshit. This guy obviously feels stronger about hating Miami than you do.

It is a natural gift I posess to create friction in sensitive situations.

This guy obviously feels stronger about hating Miami than you do.

That is probably not true.

I hate Miami. I really do. It started with them throwing roses onto Worsham in 2001. The difference is that I hate the institution, not the people. I will never, ever respect someone who openly spouts hate speech about a group of people because of where those people went to school (among many other things).

I think we can all easily imagine a few things that Miami fans could write on bedsheets that Hokies would find just as offensive, and I hope no one here would be defending that as "well, good on that person for saying what they think."

It is a natural gift I posess to create friction in sensitive situations.

If your argument was that "ALL" tech fans aren't disrespectful clowns then it's still valid. There are small portions of every fanbase that can make the whole look bad. Any other team that acts otherwise is just being ignorant.

Yeah... I mean I've personally been told by drunk ignorant pricks who represented themselves as fans of schools like Miami, WVU, NCSU, ECU, etc that not enough Hokies were killed on April 16th leading up to football games, but I'm not going to say those entire fanbases are terrible because of those few. Hell, Penn St very famously had a few students dress up as April 16th victims, with full bloody bullet holed VT shirts, but those were the select few, especially given everything that school did right after the shooting.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

And that's true and it's a fair point to make, one that I made in my argument/discussion with my friends over the VS concert. But when negative stuff is all that gets published (I know, that's on the media, but still) that's all people see.

The vast majority of people will never, ever hear about this. You're just super-duper into this particular sphere so your worldview is skewed. That's why you're blowing this out of proportion. I get it, I was there once too.

Example: I'm a long time Tech Fan and a heavy tech media consumer over the last two decades...and I have literally no idea what you're talking about when you refer to a "Victoria Secret Concert."

Frame of Reference is important.

That's fair. Although I'm no longer a student here, I do live and work here so stuff that happens here is very much in my worldview (and anything on TKP.....because work is boring on a Friday). I'm not sure how popular the Washington Post is anymore or what their online viewership is but someone here did something worthy of getting at least an online article.

There was a voting contest for a concert put on by Victoria Secret that Tech won. The concert was earlier this week and apparently Blacksburg PD and town government officials got inundated with complaints from residents over how loud the concert was and, at least the article that I read, the consensus was that Tech gets to do whatever it wants and the town gets screwed over.

I love the dc sports bog, I follow Steinberg on twitter. It's a great source for irreverant dc-area sports adjacent material. Maybe this is the problem, you're unfamiliar with the source. This is not tantamount to "something the Washington Post thought was so important they wrote an online article about it."

The Bog is a blog, it's not very serious, and Dan is granted a lot of freedom in what he posts. One time Dan went to the NASCAR Race in richmond and had people tailgating there taste fancy cheese.

While I agree this isn't a good look, I don't think it's that tasteless or offensive. It's not degrading to JF, or any innocent victim (unlike VT, PSU, LSU jokes), it just acknowledges that he's dead. Sometimes I read things and cringe (like this), but when I saw this sign, I just thought to myself "that's not even witty."

University has distanced itself. That's plenty.

Nothing on that banner mentions VT. Do we really know it is a Tech fan? It could be a disgruntled U fan.

#Let's Go - Hokies

That does suck.

Hey you guys! I found out why we won.

The way we dominated, you'd think we out-TOP'd em by at least :35

I had a particularly shitty day yesterday resulting in not getting home until 2nd half-ish, and even then the game was a backdrop to other pressing issues.
Checking in to TKP this AM and seeing our team sing the fight song in victory makes it real.

Just noticed when Sam pulled back to throw Peoples was still at the 10 with a defender.

No doubt that absolutely was the play... To slow to develop and Miami blew it up.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

that's one of those plays where a non-qb just isn't going to have the instincts to throw the ball away and not take a loss. you are already out of the pocket just put the ball past the LOS and take the incompletion.

which is why Rogers is a great option back there. Dude can throw, catch, block, run...er, did I mention he can throw?

Actually, ford can't throw the ball away. It would be intentional grounding. Only the player who originally received the snap is allowed to throw the ball away without penalty

3. Offensive play selection against Miami compared to play selection against Syracuse.

During the game where the Hokies got a penalty in the red zone and Miami declined said penalty our section of fans was pretty sure we were given 5 downs? Anyone else notice this?

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

The refs screwed up what they said over the air.

1st down we ran a play for a 4 yard loss. They threw the penalty flag, and initially said Miami accepted. Then they spotted the ball on only 2nd and 14, meaning they had actually declined the penalty, but never announced they did. From what I remember, they got it right, but in a confusing way if you weren't paying attention.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

They discussed this on the broadcast, I think I remember.

I didn't understand what they did. Have to catch a replay, forgot to set dvr. I saw 2nd and 14 but ref said third. I was confused what down it was. Oh well.

Anybody else think it would be awesome to hear them sing this as well?
"VPI Victory March"

You have seen the Hoyas tumble,
You have made the Indians cry,
And you know the Army mule
Once took a kick at V. P. I.
Worthy teams from Lexington
Have fought with all their might;
But now it's time to show the world
That VPI can fight.

Interlude:
GO, TECH!
GO, TECH!
H! O! K! I! E! S!
HOKIES!

Chorus:
Clear the way, so that team from Tech
Can roll to Victory!
No foe can stand the test,
So fight your best, and we will do the rest.
Strength and speed keep you in the lead;
You'll never go astray.
Our banner high shall ever fly
For victory is ours today.

I think it would be awesome to hear anyone outside of the south end zone singing either song.

The General knew!!

I'm really impressed not only with how CJF has embraced Tech, but how he has gotten the team to embrace traditions.
However, I was disappointed at the game. Until Thursday night, I'd never heard our fan base boo a visiting team. Maybe a handful of students here and there, but never anything loud enough to have merit. Thursday night it was a decent thunder of boos. I also had to speak to a fan in front me that was harassing some smaller 'Canes fans sitting in front of him.
There was a student next to me that said he'd never seen anything like that either. Is this something new or was it just a one-off?

I think they were booing their decision to take the field at the same time we were.

-PineyGladeHokie

I guess that explains the booing at every game, because that's pretty much SOP these days, isn't it?

I was at the UNC and Syracuse games. The teams entered at different times at both venues. And the home crowd at each booed fairly loudly when VT took the field.

Frankly I don't see the problem with it - and I seriously doubt it hurts any of the players' or coaching staffs' fragile feelings. It's college football played by young adults, not a 3rd grade spelling bee.

I've heard them boo visiting teams when they run out...especially if they run out at the same time as the Hokies..I don't like it but I don't think it's necessarily a new thing (heard it probably at least once a season since I was a student) and I don't think it's unique to VT either.

Harassing visiting fans: never acceptable

Booing the visiting team as they enter: completely acceptable and has been happening as long as I can remember. We need to get past this Hokies Respect facade and realize that it's a football game, it's ok to be a loud and hostile crowd for the away team, but please respect other fans and be a great host.

This.

I've been booing the away team coming on the field since I was a student. It's been the norm for a good while. Miami got an extra loud boo on Thursday.

Miami has had some bad fans at Lane before, but I haven't seen them the last 5-6 years. Pre-ACC days I do recall a group with roses in their teeth. They beat us and went to the Rose bowl that year.

Harassing visiting fans: never acceptable

Completely agree.

Booing the visiting team as they enter: completely acceptable

Completely disagree. Booing should be reserved for unsportsmanlike conduct and poor officiating.

"Our job as coaches is to influence young people's lives for the better in terms of fundamental skills, work ethic, and doing the right thing. Every now and again, a player actually has that effect on the coaching staff." Justin Fuente on Sam Rogers

Booing the opposing team as they came onto the field happened at basically every game I ever went to. The only time I distinctly recall that it didn't was the ECU game in 2007, after the ceremonies and their gift of $100k to the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund. They got a huge cheer as they came out. Other than that, it was basically tradition to give the other team hell.

Giving grief to opposing fans in the stands was rare unless those people were causing problems by being idiots. Saw it happen to a UNC fan one year, but he was up in everyone's faces any time UNC did anything remotely good. He got shut down pretty quickly, especially once VT was handling them on the scoreboard.

Guess it's just me. I don't remember it from our BE days. I don't remember it from UNC or OSU last year.
The 'Canes fans were quiet. They weren't bothering anyone.

Back in the Big East days fans would also very consistently chant the "Hey Hey Goodbye" song after we'd win.

I always thought it was a matter of being gracious in victory b

We booed the opposing team taking the field at every game when Iw as there 15+ years ago...

How cool is it they all know the words. Do any of us know all the words like that?

I believe every member of the Corps does :)

Thanks for posting. I missed it the other night, but they did a pretty excellent job of covering the entrance.

Nothing is as good as being there, though.

Sure is fun to watch these guys when they're rolling.

The energy from the coaching staff is something else, too.

Who is the coach in the orange hat who is calling in the plays?

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

I love this team, so fun to watch when they're doing well and having fun. But I think it's safe to say that none of them should pursue a career as a singer
