Well that is a real slap in the face. Some of the guys will be eating crow come March.
NCSU, ND and FSU should be below VT and Miami
A lot of people on here are going to take being 10 the wrong way. It's not a comment on the quality of our team, but rather how deep the ACC is. Also, we need to prove ourselves. We've never shown sustained success in ACC basketball.
My knee jerk reaction was to get butthurt, but there are 11 ACC teams in the Top 46 (I think?) of the Coaches poll. The ACC this year appears to be about as deep as it has ever been. Wouldnt shock me at all to see 8-10 ACC squads in the Dance.
Obviously would like to see us finish closer to 6 than 10 to erase any bubble talk but 10th place could still get in this year.
We need to win our out of conference games. That was part of our problem last year. I expect the team look much better than the team that started the season last year. I'll be shocked if we lose to another Alabama A&M or whoever we lost to in our first game last year.
10th, huh?
People are freaking out a little too much honestly. Preseason rankings are dumb, and we'll get our recognition if we play well.
Somehow I expected us to be higher, but it makes some sense when you look at the list above us and remember just how stacked the ACC is in basketball. I mean, I still have no idea how anyone could rank FSU and NCSU above us, but ultimately we're viewed as a middle of the pack team until we prove otherwise.
Nobody is freaking out
I'm freaking out. But we're watching The Conjuring. That shit is scary.
That shit IS scary
Conjuring 2 freaked me out even more than the conjuring. You have to watch it!!
Go see Don't Breathe and Ouija
I saw Don't Breathe. It was pretty good. Might go see Ouija this weekend. It's getting good reviews.
The early comments started out that way.
I'm going to make it a point this year to obsess over college basketball the same way that I do football.
Shows how deep the ACC is considering we're #36 in the country in the preseason polls.
ACC is disgustingly deep. You could rank 5-10/12 any way that you wanted and you could make a good case for it
10th is actually right in line with most of the published preseason polls, including KenPom so nothing to really be concerned about.
It just means the ACC media guys Diniched their votes. If the team wins, the egg is on all the voters but until then the only basketballs bouncing right now are in practices. Once the games start counting we shall see what we are made of.
Technically we wont really know where we stand ACC wise until after half the season is over anyway so why bother ranking us this early? Just fodder so they can make appearances on E$PN and radio shows and have something to talk about.
Like "preseason rookie of the year"?
DISRESPEK
WE BAK
No offense but....were we ever there?
If Blackshear is unhealthy, that's about right. If Blackshear is a go, I think we go above ND and Miami. Not sold on NC State, but will have to see their freshmen play. I think FSU is going to have one of the best 5 in the conference. I could see Bacon as a darkhorse ACC POY. You can make an argument that Rathan-Mayes and Bacon are the best backcourt in the country.
Also....
Hopefully it's something be can recover from before the season starts.
It is. #sauces
So what did he do?... Roll his ankle or something similar?
Not completely sure, think it had something to with his knee but all I heard is that it wasn't that serious.
Meh, it doesn't hurt my feelings.
Hopefully we go off on everyone like

Can someone explain the absolute love fest on uva basketball this year? Losing brogdan was HUGE and yeah they have some pieces but they're so unproven whereas a team like wisconsin (i might be a tad bias) went to the elite 8 and returns every player on the team that played any minutes coupled with the beginning of the career of a big man that can shoot like frank kaminsky....i just dont get why uva is 8
Brogdon and Gill leaving are definitely a big deal. Either way, Gill is replaced by a double digit scorer in transfer Austin Nichols, who has had a year to integrate himself to the UVA mindset. He is joined by Diakite, who redshirted last season so also has a year of practices working in the Packline defense. Both are 6'9. Then there are a group of about five guards that played medium minutes last season of which one or two will be expected to step up this season. UVA returns 7 of their top 10 contributors. They also brought in a slick shooting center to replace Mike Tobey.
I expect their starting five to look like this:
Center - Jack Salt 6'11, 245 backed up by Jay Huff 6'11, 220
Power Forward - Austin Nichols 6'9, 235 backed up by Diakite 6'9, 220
Small Forward - Isaiah Wilkins 6'7 225 backed up by Jarred Reuter 6'7, 245
Shooting Guard - Marial Shayok 6'5, 196 backed up by Darius Thompson 6'4, 196
Point Guard - London Perrantes 6'2, 197 backed up by Devon Hall 6'5, 207
Not included above other than Jay Huff is that UVA signed four players in the top 80 last year, including Kyle Guy a five star shooting guard as well as Ty Jerome a top ten point guard. I expect that half of these will redshirt but expect Huff and either Guy or Jerome to play meaningful minutes. Thats six players in two years in the top 80 for their classes plus a double digit scoring transfer infusing talent into the UVA program for this season.
I dont disagree with you regarding Wisconsin though, the Badgers just always seem to have a tough time getting the spotlight in the Big10 even though they are the top ranked team this season starting out in that conference. I honestly think this is probably a bit of coaching profile with Bennett being more respected than Greg Gard, who is only in his second season as head coach. His incoming recruiting class left something to be desired as well as both are unranked players albeit they both came through IMG Academy. Hard for me to grasp how two kids in that program could have remained unranked with how highly IMG is in terms of prep/high school basketball each year.
And when its all said and done, its one spot in a preseason poll between 7th and 8th.
Pretty sure we could win the ACC with 13 freshmen and they'd still rank us 8th in the conference to start the year. Screw 'em, just win games.
More or less a meaningless exercise, and I sort of don't have a problem with it. I anticipate that VT will continue to move up.
If VT wants a higher ranking, all they have to do is win in order to earn it. The ACC is pretty phenomenal in basketball, so it will be great to be increasingly competitive in it.
Whatever. They gon learn
well, maybe not today, but soon enough
This number 10 in conference ranking is a massive blow guys. It's almost like the team won't even take the court. We may as well forfeit right now. No need to play any games. /s

Serious response to sarcastic comment?
How serious is this discussion, to begin with?
It's a pre-season poll.
Seem my comment, above, about this "meaningless exercise".
Nah, BC has a stranglehold on that
Sorry, your sarcasm is duly noted, and your commentary was correct.
In hindsight, I should have legged it instead of responding, as we clearly agree.
I don't know why a lot of people here think it is disrespect..... first it's just a preseason poll, who gives merit to those in the first place and secondly, it just shows how deep the ACC is/could be.
We could finisher higher or lower, who knows. Almost like the SEC in football.... everybody is going to beat up on each other, somebody has to lose.

Bulletin Board material...
We're getting way more respect this year. In the coaches preseason voting we were picked 36th nationally which is rarefied air compared to where we've been. Still, in that poll we were nearly as low in the ACC as this poll. Its about the league we play in.
That said, I'd bet the farm we finish higher than 10th.
