Starting early... Week 11 Other Games Thread

I guess no one paid attention to WMU remaining undefeated last night (myself included). Was anything else on?
Also, Eastern Michigan earned bowl eligibility for the first time in 5 seasons. Maybe they'll get selected this time compared to last, but who knows?

MAC has two games tonight too... BGSU @ Akron, Toledo @ NIU.

What's up with the MAC playing on Tuesday and Wednesday nights anyway?

Didn't even know WMU played last night until this morning, but I went to see my favorite band of all time in concert last night to escape the all the election stress madness.

What's up with the MAC playing on Tuesday and Wednesday nights anyway?

#MACtion has been a thing for a few seasons now on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in November. The Sun Belt also has #FunBelt games on weeknights in late September/early October.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Definitely been a thing for awhile. When I was in maximum college football fever in middle school and early high school I would watch any game, any day. MACtion on Tuesdays and Wednesdays helped me satisfy my insatiable hunger throughout the midweek. Ended up pulling pretty hard for Toledo one year, Jalen Parmele had a really cool story (and a great season) and ended up making it to the NFL and was able to successfully take care of his family.

/end random story about middle school that nobody cares about.

As some slightly older Hokies might remember, about ten years ago or so, ESPN did something like 24 straight days of college football. It was GLORIOUS. I think we were in there two or three times, on a Thursday of course, and I wanna say a weird random game on a Wednesday.

Yeah, I know it's been a thing for a while. Exactly how long ago did it start though?

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

Tuesday MACtion is great. Not the highest skill games but they're usually fun to watch and have players and coaches worth keeping an eye on.

Pitt/Clemson could be interesting.

Could MSU give Alabama some trouble?

I thought Syracuse would at least make things interesting with Clemson....but then the game happened.

Never know which Clemson you're going to get each week man.

Very true, and Dungey got concussed early, huge step down to their backup apparently.

You're dead on with this, it could be a great game, or Clemson could win by 30-40 who knows.

Yeah Pitt has enough skill where they can surprise you.
Then Clemson is undefeated and you know every team has
one of those close games in a season like that.

Then Clemson is undefeated and you know every team has
one of those close games in a season like that

they already had theirs..against NCST

Onward and upward

and Auburn... and Troy... and Louisville... and Florida State... They have not been strangers to close games. They have been walking the line all season, had some fortunate circumstances in each of the NC State, Louisville, and Florida State games.

I'm still impressed by the (flawed, IMHO) narrative from some in the media:
Clemson-great teams & Heisman candidates find ways to win; this team is great.
Lousiville-barely beat Virginia & Duke...they aren't really that good, I don't care who they've blown out.

___

This is the only narrative I hear about in upstate SC. 90% of Clemson fan believe this wholeheartedly. Every week, my social media feeds are full of Clemson fans who feel the need to remind everyone, literally every week, that they beat Louisville, and troll anything positive posted about Louisville. They are the most butt hurt fanbase I have ever dealt with.

This was super evident the week after Clemson (should have lost) played NC State. They were banging the "NC State is actually a really good team, the ACC is so deep and strong now..." narrative very, very hard. Then Louisville was up like 48-0 on NC State at the half and literally it's like all the fans snapped and began desperately trying to disrespect Louisville and remind everyone that they beat Louisville. It wasn't the funny "Disregarding x UNC hasn't x" kind of tweets, it was vitriolic, aggressive, defensive retaliation and they do this with anything. Just throw out the term Clemsoning in casual conversation if you want a bunch of stats spit aggressively in your face.

sheesh, sounds like it will be unbearable no matter how the ACCCG turns out.

I'm not, for the sake my sanity, but I do live in upstate SC though and grew up here so all of my social media twitter, instagram, and my daily interactions with friends/acquaintances puts me right in the middle of all their non sense.

The best way I can describe the collective Clemson fanbase is the kid who can't take a joke, has no sense of humor, and gets extremely defensive and upset when you kid around with them or insult them in any manner.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

My favorite thing to do is drop subtle reminders that since 1992 (when I was born, so this is relevant to most people I interact with around my age) we have won twice as many ACC championships as Clemson, and we've only been in the ACC since 2004. I don't just state it out right, just retweet, or include it in a conversation about something else. Make them sit on it for a bit before realizing they aren't the blue blood juggernaut they all seem to think they are.

I haven't been following their recruiting that closely, but from what I have heard, they're going to be gutted by upperclassmen leaving this year, and they don't exactly have the best track record of reloading. This might be their last true shot at a Natty title before their current window closes, and I would love nothing more than to be the program that slams it shut.

This x100000000

I haven't been following their recruiting that closely, but from what I have heard, they're going to be gutted by upperclassmen leaving this year, and they don't exactly have the best track record of reloading.

They will be gutted by early entries and upperclassmen leaving for sure. But they are absolutely loaded at skill positions and have another 5 star QB (Hunter Johnson) coming in next year, but it's unlikely they will ever have a QB so perfectly tailor-made for their offense as Deshaun. Their recruiting has seen a substantial uptick in the last 3-4 years particularly the last two. I believe they currently have the 7th rated class so they are doing well there. Plus some of their amazing defensive line is pretty young. So they will be a mixed bag of talent and inexperience the next two seasons most likely so they will be hard to gauge.

So overall, they have a recent trend of reloading, we will see how that unfolds, but I think without Deshaun they slip back behind FSU most seasons and Louisville will probably be the Atlantic and ACC favorite next season.

I didn't know about Hunter Johnson... that's good for them, and the conference, but you're right. There's a difference between having top recruits and having guys like Deshaun Watson. Unless you're Bama, you don't lose that much starting experience and not take a step back for a year or two as they grow up. And I am still not sold on FSU. There just seem to be systemic problems with that program and while they have all the mixings to be good, the sum of the parts are just an inconsistent mess, able to beat anyone, but also lose to anyone.

I also wouldn't put too much stock into UofL. Yes, they'll still have Lamar Jackson, but that's it. Their recruiting isn't that great, and they're really only going to go as far as Lamar can take them. Defensively, they're far more suspect than they should be. They got lucky that Lamar wasn't hobbled at all this year, but I wouldn't bet on that for next. He rolls that ankle once, and their season is shot, much like what happened to us when Vick couldn't play against Miami in 2000.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Lamar Jackson has been surprisingly durable for someone who seems as slight as he looks. I know he's tall and weighs more than you'd expect, but he looks thin.

I agree about FSU seemingly having some internal issues, but they are a few years removed from a great national title team and even during Clemson's best two years ever (this year and last year), they played Clemson close both times with underachieving squads. So I believe that pendulum is going to swing back to FSU's side.

I can't wait when the day Dabo announces he is leaving for a top blue blood program. The Clemson cries will be loud.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

I made the mistake of responding to a David Hale tweet about Clemson's O (stats this year being virtually identical to stats, last year), with the observation that their O doesn't "look" as good as last year. My twitter feed blew up with irate Clemson fans.

You want to talk about a double let-down game? Both teams coming off huge wins it could go either way (from a point spread perspective, of course). Bama will win, I doubt State can string two good games together without Dak Prescott. If I were in Vegas, I'd avoid this game like the plague (Bama is a 29 point home favorite)

I watched WMU last night, they struggled until well into the 4th...everything opened up with that safety though. Though I am impressed with their record, last night was my first time sitting down and watching them and I wasn't that impressed.

Still, what PJ Fleck is doing there is awesome. Wonder IF anybody is able to snag him away, heard he's pretty loyal to them.

Eventually someone will snag him away, if he has higher aspirations as a coach and wants to make more money, he has to go elsewhere eventually. I'm sure WMU will always hold a special place in his heart, but at some point he's going to have to turn down 3M+ a year from a P5 school to stay there, and I don't think that happens.

I think an interesting matchup with a new top 10 team is Penn State traveling out to Indiana. Indiana can prove to be a challenge with their offense - will interesting to see if they attack the ground game, or continue to be prolific-ish through the air. Though the IU QB does throw a ton of INT's.

Tomorrow, we are all Blue Devils.

I want to see them just obliterate UNC.

Can't do it.

Don't give up on your dreams.

I'm rooting for UNC to win out and VT to win out and for us to sit at about 8th for the ACC-CG and them at 9th. And when we beat Clemson, probably we alone can say we've beat two top 10 teams.

Except for Clemson, who beat Louisville and Auburn. A 3-loss Auburn will probably sit just barely within the top ten if they play Bama close, methinks, considering all those losses came in fairly close games to top ten teams

True, if Auburn played Bama close. Which I'm not expecting they will.

Auburn's running game has been scarily good in the last few weeks. If you get a couple play action pass going early in the game to loose up Bama's rushing defense, it would not surprise me if they pull an upset.

Any other Hokies going to the UNC vs. Duke game? I'll be there loud and proud in orange!

Tonight we're all Duke fans!

Edit: It kills me how ESPN loves UNC so much more than us. Talking about them being in the lead in the coastal, but need Virginia Tech to lose...

Not gonna lie - I love the hell out of David Cutcliffe. Unbelievable job he has done with the Duke program, and an all-around classy guy. Would love to see them knock off the cheaters.

funny: there's this guy on the sports radio station down here in the ATL -pretty knowledgeable (has his own nationally-syndicated college football radio show) that just got done with a segment tonight...

first, they were covering where UGA and GT were playing and where they are in the season and then they segwayed in to GTs matchup and he completely blew off GTs chances in Lane for basically every reason... then they move on to spoiler possibilities with AU-UGA and then VT-GT (again; poo-pooed) and then about possibilities in the Coastal VT being a pretty scary match-up for Clemson for the ACCCG... and I quote, "...because they'll have to face it, but UNC has no defense and their offense can go cold at inopportune times to compound matters."

To be fair, he did go on to say that he thinks both VT and UNC COULD beat Clemson. I do think he overvalues UNC's offense. Apparently they just can't play at all in adverse weather. I think their offense is pretty soft, and I think Evans as a running threat would be a bigger advantage against Clemson.

I did not feel Palmer was disrespectful to us. He just feels that a shoot out is the only way to beat Klemson. I disagree. I think a better defense like ours can challenge them with pressure and solid cornerback play. I hope we get a chance to find out. Go doookies!

SCHokie

I agree. I think our defense is uniquely built to give smashmouth spread offenses fits. We athletically can match up with those style offenses with base personnel. Bud's recent struggles against dual threat QBs are very distinct - it's usually improvisation and not designed runs that kill us. Watson, for the most part, will kill you on designed runs and in the read option game, and that plays into our strengths defensively. It's the QB that keeps the play alive and kills us with a deep pass or is just athletic enough to move the chains that hurts us.

I agree, I didn't take any disrespect from him. But he still shops at Baby Gap.

Big ST mistake by Duke there. If they don't get out of the shadow of their own goalpost, and considering UNC gets the ball to start the half...

It was Jones' plan all along, considering where the safety was and how open the underneath stuff was.

Absolutely, but I don't think the idea was to 'let' him do it.

Especially with a QB that has issues throwing deep. RPO is the call on that play.

I'm really hoping Duke goes to a bowl game this year. They play hard all year.

I never say no to beating Pitt and Miami.

Technically, they only need to win one more to have a chance to go to a bowl. I'm not a fan of teams going to a bowl with a losing record but it would be hard to argue a better 5-7 team than Duke.

I loathe Duke the way some of you loathe UNC. Their elitist snobbery and intolerable holier than thou attitude prevents me from enjoying their success too much, no matter the sport.

Except for instances when it benefits us. That was awesome

You'll love this particular one from the 'rabidrev's rant' Thread....

The reality is we are two plays away from being 5-5 (i.e., the last second TD against Pitt and the 54 yard FG against FSU). And we lose a ton of talent this year. Our recruiting is not as strong as you would expect after last year. We can blame that in large part to our lackluster football fan base along with our AD's failure to somehow improve the fragmented tailgating experience. Also, whoever approved the Blue Zone concept should be fired. Lastly, common sense should tell the University that we need to replace those God awful aluminum bleachers with Carolina blue seats and dial the seating capacity back to 55K. We rarely exceed this number and when we do its because it's a rivalry game with a large number of opposing fans being brought by UNC fans. There is a lot to be concerned about, although I acknowledge this is a half empty kind of day for me today after being in Durham last night. I have to say that dook's football stadium is actually quite attractive now, although the concession and bathroom facilities on the visitors' side are comparable to an average high school stadium. We have a lot that needs to be addressed. I have missed 4 games at Kenan since 1971 so please don't start with the troll comments.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I want to reply to him "hey, if you disregard all this, you guys have an amazing program." But I'm not that guy (for the most part heh)...

I mean, he's in a real bad place at the moment - like all of us probably were after the 'Cuse debacle - but nothing he said was wrong. They obviously had a great '15 season and rightly had high hopes for '16. But they won't be this talent-rich for many moons starting next year. So I get the reality check.

I don't think their fan base woes and aluminum bleachers at Kenan caused last night's result - but when you're burying your own team on a message board, you grab whatever you can find to move the dirt.

Shovel away, Heels.

We would be a top 10 team with a chance to win 3 more games (one a conference championship game against what will still be a Top 5 team), and we wouldn't be talking about a legitimate shot?

You think the committee would place a 2 loss conference champ with losses like Tenn and Cuse ahead of a 1 loss non conference not champ like Mich or OSU? Tech would have been 9-11 in the rankings but would not crack top 4. Louisville would get in over Tech.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

The bottom line with the committee is they are looking for the best four teams in college football. We do not present much of an argument for that, even if we beat GT's second string today.

Find me 10 teams that VT would have jumped even after last night.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

I wasn't talking about jumping ten in one night.

But we would have been in the 10-11 range, with several of those teams ahead with very real chances of losing in front of us (OSU or Mich, OK or Ok St - both already with 2 losses and no CCG, Wash vs Wash St.)

Still a likely Top 5 matchup against Clemson in the ACCCG, and unlikely a 2 loss non division champ (Penn St., loser of OSU/Mich is going before a 2 loss conference winner. So that eliminates maybe another 3-4 teams.

I'm wasn't saying we go Top 4 for sure in that scenario, but it becomes a really interesting end of season.

I love how kickers sprint like hell down the field after kicking game-winning field goals. Because they know everyone else on their teams is coming after them.

If Clemson is still top 5 after losing at home to 5-4 Pitt like I'm seeing some projections I'm going to be quite mad.

Who would they drop below? Clemson at 5-7 is the most logical spot for them. That's why people saying if VT had won they would have good shot at playoffs are delusional. Too many 1/2 loss teams out there.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

Agree about the VT scenarios being ridiculous, but I think a loss at home to 5-4 team late in the season means you shouldn't be a legitimate playoff team. I think Clemson's SOR being so high is totally bogus, outside of Louisville, the Auburn win was counting as way too much, they only looked good in one game and just lost to Georgia after looked mediocre last week against Vandy and FSU is totally a shell of the solid FSU teams of the last few years.

I won't be satisfied until Clemson has a 0% chance of winning a title.

Just curious...but for those folks such as yourself that keep plugging joining TKPlayers club....is crapping on people's reasonably thought out discussions part of your sales strategy?

Why pay to be called delusional when you can get it for free

Instead I should blow smoke up your ass? VT even after last night and if they had beaten GT would still be the 3rd ranked playoff team in just the ACC. At best your looking at a top 10 end of season and fight Louisville for NY6 bowl game.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Michigan losing appears to be bad for Ohio State. If PSU and OSU win out, and Michigan beats Indiana, that would make for a 2 way tie between OSU and PSU, and PSU wins the head-to-head and becomes the B1G East Champion. If Michigan had beaten Iowa, that would make for a 3-way tie at 6-1 where OSU would be the highest ranked (most likely) and end up as the B1G East Champion.

Kind of cheering for OSU against Michigan. They can beat their rival and watch PSU go to the championship and just wonder...
