GIFTORY: Frame-by-Frame Highlight Reel of Virginia Tech's 24-21 Win at Duke

Wins over basketball schools still qualify for GIFTORY.

[Michael Shroyer]

Virginia Tech maintained its grip on the ACC Coastal with a 24-21 win at Duke. Cue GIFTORY.

There was a block by Teller at the 2:02 (4th) mark that was wicked good.

I'm a bit saddened by the Ford TD catch because we all know it was wiped out.

Still, when I say I was looking forward to this edition because beamerball.gif, I'm not lying. Thanks, Joe.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

I'm sad at both... The first one was a catch and the refs blew it. The second one, because Wyatt decided to pass block about 10 yards down the field

I watched the reply in slo-mo, and he was between 3 and 4 yards down field when the pass was thrown, 5-6 when caught, and 10 when the flag came in. Still a penalty, by one step, but not as bad as you make it sound.
If they had been watching for holding on the Duke tackles as closely as they watched Teller on being down field they would have had at lease 5 penalties. He is going to having to really focus to get rid of this reputation if he wants the benefit of the doubt other players are getting.

Yep, missed it by a yard. The rule is 3 yards and he was 4 yards downfield -
seems like strict enforcement of this a priority this year

Ultimately, the committee decided to instruct officials to stringently enforce the 3-yard limit and adjust officiating mechanics to better officiate those plays.

Well except seeing UT OL 10+ yds down field to block for several passes that didn't go 10 yds in the air. And that game isn't the only one where this was an issue. I recall seeing Clemson OL downfield on RPO's in the Louisville game as well as FSU game. They almost need an additional ref just to keep track of it.

I could not find the rule in a very brief search, but believe you can be downfield blocking if the pass does not go beyond the line of scrimmage? Not sure if that applies to the examples above. I agree it is called inconsistently, but that refs often seem to keep a particularly close eye on Teller based on the number of borderline calls that have gone against him.

Anyone have a quick clarification on exactly why Ineligible receiver downfield is a rule? I have guessed that it's an unfair advantage to have a blocker move downfield looking like he's blocking for a runner, but I don't know if there's more to it

That's what it's all about

My best guess is that it's in place in order to keep the offense from sending 10 receivers every play.

And to keep linemen from blocking defenders that are trying to cover a receiver.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

It's particularly an issue with interior linemen picking off defenders covering crossing routes.

Seems like several teams send TEs to do the same thing in order to make up for it. I've seen Notre Dame and Pitt run pick plays with their TEs quite frequently over the years.

Correct, but it is a totally different idea running a rub or pick route with two eligible receivers versus using a rhinoceros to block a scarecrow.

except that you can always line up a big ole lineman as an illegible receiver and do just that.

an illegible receiver

?...are we talking about UNC again?

Onward and upward

Actually, an illegible receiver might be a good thing. They can't be read, so they can't be covered.

You can, but you're trading off speed and likely catching ability (see Pitt for exception) for a bigger blocker. I mean, you could put an Imoh-sized guy in at Left Tackle. Doesn't mean you should.

After watching the RPO, I see why the refs called Teller for the penalty, but damn do I feel for the guy just trying to do his job and block somebody.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

If the pansy he had tried to block had simply stood his ground, Teller wouldn't have ended up so far downfield and might not have been called.

I like the way you think. :--)

This is what happens when basketball schools play football - flopping everywhere trying to draw a penalty.

Each time I watch the Stroman block, the more I think he almost could have caught it out of mid-air.

I wish we the gif also had second block a few seconds later in the play

The blocked FG was such an awesome play. Executed well and
just went great.

Love me some GIFtory

The Dude Abides

Look at all the gaping mouths in the background of the post picture. Fantastic.

I was hoping someone caught the block from Nijman (I think) early in the game where it looked like he was scooping across the line and appeared to toss a defender about 5 yards across the field.

That first gif is just another Bucky falling down catch, when will he stay on his feet to catch a ball?! s/

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

It's been great to see Nijman take to being the starting LT so well. He's going to get paid handsomely if he continues to improve.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Props to Ricky Walker #98 for splitting the double-team and arriving in time to finish off Jones with Ekanem.
