Turnover and Loss
In a highly anticipated return, Buzzketball gets to face the Maine Black Bears. Maine comes in off a difficult 8-22 season that saw two seniors graduate and four other top performers leave the program at years end. The Bears are trying to replace over two thirds of their scoring from last year as well as their top three interior defenders in terms of blocked shots and defensive rebounding.
Its tough for me to predict who will be on the court for the Bears considering all of the turnover from their roster the previous season. The Bears suffered one more blow at the beginning of October when they lost Troy Reid-Knight, a 6'1, 190 lbs Senior Guard to a broken ankle. He brought the Bears 4.8 PPG, 2.2 RPG, and 1.2 APG last season and was expected to see his role dramatically increase this year.
This news was bad enough, but then you look at the Maine preseason exhibition schedule, which had Maine losing to UMaine-Fort Kent 80-75. This is a Division I program losing to a Division III program in preseason.
What does that mean for the Hokies?
This is the kind of game that can haunt you all season if you don't come out and treat the game with the respect it deserves. Fortunately, Buzz Williams only has to reach back to last year to remind his players of what impact the loss to Alabama State had on the Hokies all season to hopefully get his players focused for this game. If that isn't enough reminder, Buzz only has to reach back to last Sunday when the Hokies lost a scrimmage to ***George Mason.****
Buzz Williams on Tech Talk
Buzz Williams spoke this week on Tech Talk Live about where we stand as a program and as a team. He warned fans that the team so far isn't as advanced in terms of plays and schemes because he spent much more time working on culture and program structure with the players during the preseason. I believe his line was that the team is basically running on four distinct plays and all of those are the ones you learn when you are playing in 7th grade.
It was pretty evident that he is frustrated by the NCAA structure for the preseason. Apparently the coaches are allotted 42 days prior to their first game to work in up to 30 practices or other team activities. Buzz didn't come straight out and say it but it was apparent that he would prefer a larger window of time to work with the team preseason rather than having to cram things in during the season on top of school and game load for the players.
Other notes from Buzz on Tech Talk
Buzz touched on the injury to KJ Blackshear and how tough a balancing act it is between doing what's right for the team and doing what's right for the player and his future. Buzz seems to question whether KJ will be able to return this season at all before he would hit the point of diminishing returns, similar to Hill last season on whether to redshirt this year or not. It was a refreshing segment to hear a coach care more about a player and what he promised that players parents than putting the player at risk in hopes of winning a couple more games.
Buzz also addressed where Zach Leday stood at least at the last scrimmage. The medical staff had allotted Leday a maximum of seven minutes to play in the scrimmage and Buzz said he used about six of those minutes. Considering Leday played about 30 minutes a game last season for us, that will be a tough void in the center of the court until he is back to full speed.
Lastly, Buzz touched on how Maine came to be added to the schedule this year. Apparently Coach Walsh, the Maine head coach has run a leadership conference for the last ten years in the off season. Buzz touched on how he has been sending Devin Johnson every season all the way back to when Buzz was the head coach at New Orleans. That led to discussions that ultimately led to Maine being added to our schedule.
Here are the likely impact players on this game.

Aaron Calixte, #1 a 5'11, 175 lbs Junior Guard is a double digit scorer returning. Calixte averaged 10.8 PPG, 2.1 RPG, 2.7 APG while shooting 38% from outside the arc. He also had the highest turnover margin on the team so the Hokies should aim to get significant pressure on Calixte when he has the ball. To give you an idea of the lack of experience on this team, Calixte played 813 minutes last year and his closest returning teammate played 507 minutes.

Garet Beal,#55 a 6'6, 215 lbs Senior Guard averaged 8.5 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 1.2 APG, and shot over 40% from beyond the arc. Beal also averaged more than 2 turnovers per game last season. Beal is expected to play mostly a winger role and is known for his stout defense on the perimeter. Expect to see him match up with Bibbs and Allen outside when they are on the floor.

Marko Pirovic,#4 a 6'7, 205 lbs Senior Forward, playing only 10 minutes a game contributed 2.1 PPG, 1.5 RPG, and has a poor shooting percentage all around is expected to play a starting role at least in the beginning of the season. Pirovic is coming off foot surgery so his playing time against Tech may be limited by his recovery.
Freshmen I expect to see play significant roles for Maine

Danny Evans #5 is a 6'4 point guard from England comes to Maine through Phillips Academy, where he averaged 17 points, 6 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.2 steals as a prep student. Evans is also a member of Englands U-19 program. He is expected to rotate minutes with Calixte and Beal in terms of running the point.

Vincent Eze, #50 is a 6'8, 202 lbs Redshirt Freshmen whose nickname is of course "The Big" Eze. He comes to Maine from Nigeria by way of Putnam Science Academy. He is a raw talent as he came to the game of basketball after coming to the United States four years ago. His offensive talent is very limited but he is expected to make a significant contribution on the defensive end of the floor.
Dennis Ashley, #32 is a 6' combo guard that went to prep school in Maine at Bridgton Academy but is originally from Santa Monica, California. He is an excellent outside shooter, averaging better than 42% in his last year of prep school. He is expected to come off the bench in spot situations, especially set plays that create an open outside shot.

Andrew Fleming, is a 6'7, 222 lbs forward that was Maine's Gatorade Player of the Year last season where he averaged 16.6 points, 11.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.9 steals as a senior for Oxford Hills High. He is expected to contribute immediately on both ends of the floor, possibly as a starter but more likely as the sixth man to insert some energy to the lineup.
What to expect when Maine is on the court?
Maine plays a heavy man to man half-court defense and is allowed offensive freedom on the other end fueled by the strengths of the players on the court. Coach Walsh expects 100% commitment on the defensive end and essentially rewards his players for that commitment by allowing them the freedom to determine what works best on offense amongst themselves with some guidance of course.
This could be difficult for the Hokies if as Buzz alluded to, they are not ready with plays and are forced to react to multiple pressure situations throughout the game. This game could get sloppy in terms of Hokies offense so expect to see Buzz rely on his better ball handlers especially early in the game to try to establish a tempo and reduce turnovers.
Also expect to see Buzz continue to have this team attack the rim as they did last season, especially with so much youth on the floor for Maine. Early foul trouble could sway this game significantly.
In Closing
No KJ, limited Zach but fully healthy Hill and Outlaw makes for a very small but very fast lineup at least for these first few games. Speed and attacking angles will have to make up for big bodies down low. Fortunately, Maine doesn't really have much size on their roster so we likely see a very similar opposing lineup from the Bears.
One other area that I am going to be interested to see is how much if any impact the two freshmen have on this game. Does Buzz play Khadim Sy to give him some size down low?

Does Tyrie Jackson get some minutes when Justin Robinson needs a breather or do all those minutes go to flexing our other guards through the lineup?
I think this game comes down to basic talent level and drive. I feel the Hokies may struggle early but with the intensity and difficulty of getting through preseason preparation they will outhustle this game away from Maine in the second half. Final score of something like 87-66 as the Hokies close out their first win of the season at Cassell.

Comments
Even without KJ and limited LeDay, it is a cold fish slap to the face wake up losing to Bama St in a scrimmage as a fan. We were talking about NCAA dancing but we need to be able to take care of business in these games. Hopefully Buzz was using the scrimmage to do some experimenting as well.
It sounded as though it was a pared down roster that played the scrimmage. He also mentioned that Matt Galloway got meaningful minutes in the scrimmage so that gave me a grain of salt to go off of. Galloway should almost not see the floor in regular season games unless something has dramatically changed that I am unaware of.
allen also didn't play.
I'm wondering if he wasn't trying to send a message like when the original dream team lost a scrimmage to college all-stars. Buzz can now point to the loss and remind them how much losses out of conference hurt them down the road.
Key word: scrimmage.... Its like the preseason in the NFL, it doesn't matter what the final result is, all you're trying to do there is ensure the team is ready for the opener, and possibly see how a wrinkle or two that you've been trying out in fall drills works in a game situation. You're also trying out floor pairings to see what works and what doesn't work without regard to the final score.
Virginia Tech didn't scrimmage against Alabama State last week. We scrimmaged George Mason. Buzz was quoted saying that they played Alabama State, but that was in reference to HOW the team played, not the team we played against.
They only played one half, and Robinson, Hill, and Clarke got 17 out of 20 minutes. A positive part was that Khadim Sy scored 9 points in only 13 minutes. Pretty good production for a freshman.
Yeah, I seem to remember a stat sheet floating around the internet a few days ago that had GM/VT on it.
Thanks for the correction on the scrimmage. I was driving during Tech Talk so I obviously missed the texture of his comment.
I have missed you guys! I have missed hoops game threads! And I've missed Buzzketball! We have 40 victories to look forward to, ladies and gents.
Don't mean to be a Buzzkill but unless I'm missing something I think our best possible record is 39-0, unless the NCAA Selection Committee somehow thinks a 33-0 ACC champion should be placed in a 16-16 play-in game.
30-0 regular season makes double bye in ACCT
3-0 from the ACCT QF onward
6-0 in the NCAAT
Just sayin'
I think you're all missing the part where they cancel all postseason tournaments and possibly the forseeable future of college basketball after the regular season because we're the greatest, most perfect definition of a basketball team. Then Coach K, Izzo, Cal, Williams, and the likes all decide to just regroup and combine forces to attempt to take us out after a few years of this VT team trotting the globe.
Maine, Alabama State, George Mason, who cares? I'm ready for some Buzzketball! I'll be there Friday. Let's Go!
Glad LeDay is going to be okay. When the news broke I automatically assumed the worst because that's just how it seems to go with our basketball team. Bring on the season!
Want to take the opportunity to say thanks for these write ups. Roundball doesn't get the same love as its pig-skinned counterpart, but its gaining traction. 33+ vs 12 regular season games is a pretty glaring difference.
For real, this might a be more comprehensive write up on uMaine than their resources might come up with themselves.
Thanks for your time and insights!
No problem, fortunately information wise with this one, it was dealing with a small team thats in a smaller market so there was some focused material from the newspapers online up there. Not a ton of information but definitely more available than some of our other smaller opponents.
Great to have you back writing again Rob. Let's go Hokies, beyond pumped for basketball season!
Forgive my ignorance. How does one watch the ACC Extra Network? Streaming? If so, where? I tried googling it but no such luck. My apologies if this is really easy and I am just being lazy.
You'll be able to stream it on ESPN360/ESPN3/WatchESPN/Whatever they've changed it to this week
Its Gameday, make sure you have your computers hooked up to your televisions so you arent stuck watching a mini screen. Game is now Sold Out. Cant wait for tipoff.
Dual screening the Buzzketball with the USA v mexico game. Let's go!
Red Five, checking in! Can't wait for Buzzketball tonight.

Copy Red Leader!
At your wing, Red Leader. One rail deep, let's do this shit.
Anybody watching the game? Tech not being too aggressive, good thing Maine can't shoot.
The camera work is pretty terrible. Couldn't even see Allen shoot on his layup.
Yeah this camera crew is awful. We're missing seeing 1/3 of VTs shots because they just are incapable of using the right feed.
Not good if this is the future of the ACCNETWORK
And basketball should be the easiest sport to shoot. Just to a wide shot and go back and forth with the action.
Came to this thread just to post about the shoddy camera work.
For the wide shot, the dude keeps zooming in and following the ball. I can't see any of the action away from the ball and is very frustrating. Also what the heck is up with using the under basket camera to track a fast break?? It's impossible to see anything with the camera so tight. These folks need to zoom it out a bit and keep the camera still.
Here's to hoping the camera crew has a break at halftime to go over how poorly they executed the first half.
I am missing all of it since the WatchESPN app doesnt want to work for me on any of my devices. Got it to work for about a four minute sequence, it went to commercial and locked up and hasnt worked since. Trying to keep my cursing low key enough to not wake my munchkins.
Hokies are playing well, but not dominating and not finishing at the rim.
I signed up for SlingTV tonight just to get ESPNU and it doesn't give me the Hokie game as an option...Trying to make me watch UNC v Tulane...ugh...Cursing.....Engage
On a sling app, or using your login on espn3? On espn3 I'm not having any issues, and I'm too lazy to check sling app since I only have my phone right now to check the sling app.
That's why I ask questions here..I was using the Sling TV app. Didn't even think I could use that login to ESPN3. Now I am golden!
Seth Allen bringing cornrows back?
New season, new look!
Seth Allen Iverson
Way too many commercial breaks in the last 5 minutes.
Checking in from Cassell. Good crowd, so great to have Buzzketball back in action. Definitely some stuff to clean up before the games get harder but it's so good to see these kids again I can look past all that tonight.
Sy is a defensive beast down low. My goodness he's going to be a special player for us once he gets used to the ACC
Pleasantly surprised with Sy. Offensively, he is very nifty and has a lot of awareness of where he is around the basket. He will have his moments as a freshman for sure, but he has exceeded my expectations so far.
Defensively he has been an enforcer making great plays without fouling.
He will be called on a lot this year so I am not as uneasy after tonight.
1-0!
Bring on the High Point. . . Whatever the hell they call themselves.
Panthers... Guy in the room next to me when I lived on campus transferred into Tech from HPU and had their stuff all over the place
Garbage time points brought a 30 point win down to 13 while we shoftened up on defense while trying to get Outlaw to break through... Overall a good win despite the sloppiness that crept in here and there.
Much better performance than this time last year. Sy looks to be the early favorite for breakout star for the Hokies this year. So far, I'm buying the hype. We buried a team while not playing our best. Can't ask for much more than that.
Is Sy pronounced "see" or "sigh"? I've been reading it as "sigh" but the announcers were pronouncing it the other way tonight. Thanks!
For whatever reason the 2016-17 media guide isn't on Hokiesports.com, otherwise I'd point us both to a definitive answer.
On this note, it has become increasingly difficult for me to navigate HokieSports. I love reading the PDF game notes before football games and I also reference the site for information about the players like you mention.
It literally took me almost 10 minutes to navigate to the PDF game notes yesterday for the GT game. Maybe it's me...?
Took me way longer than in the past just to look up the men's basketball schedule last night (to see whether it would be on ESPN3), so no it's not just you.
Was pronounced sigh at the game
Eh, I heard "see" several times. I remember distinctly thinking it was supposed to be "sigh" and then realizing I was mistaken as the announcers went the other way with it. But I was pretty drunk...maybe I misheard.
You heard right. I just re-watched the team intro from last night and the PA announcer in Cassell definitely pronounced it "See."
Definitely "see"
(source: lived in Senegal)
Sy will be good until we get into ACC play. He's not big enough to bang with the big men in conference. But when he grows up, he's gonna be good.
He needs 2 offseasons in a college weight training regiment. He's toothpick thin right now with a ton of talent but he's going to get pushed around in ACC play.
It's a shame that we need him so badly this year. A redshirt year to add some weight and strength would help him a lot.
Good game but against a team like Maine need to play a lot better. Seemed like Buzz knows that in what he said in the postgame interview about some improvements. Defiantly stopped playing to early
Last Field Goal 03:02 in 2nd Half
45% shooting / 30% 3 point shooting
But awesome 1st game crowd
Slow start, they need to improve on free throw shooting and some of the guys were ice cold shooting from the floor.
Sy is definitely more advanced than Hamilton, which I dont know if we should look at that as a positive or negative. Sy did well positioning himself to make plays and didnt hesitate with the basketball under the rim on both ends. Several nice blocks and key rebounds. Had a little trouble with their freshman forward towards the end but all in all a solid night 6 points, 4 rebounds, 3 blocks in 15 minutes of play.
Hamilton though showed us he hasnt progressed much for a couple reasons, one, because Buzz only went to him in the last few minutes speaks volumes, secondly, with how he was absolutely man handled by their freshman forward in the few minutes he got in. Still cant seem to get an underneath position if his life depended on it. Matt Galloway played more minutes than Hamilton if that is any indication.
Outlaw struggled to find a rhythm and as pointed out above, the team seemed to make it a focus at the end of the game to try to help him along, which didnt go so well but fortunately we were up by enough for it not to matter.
Justin Robinson looked like he was in mid season form with the way he passed the ball and controlled tempo. He also showed a little Malcolm Delaney in him, grabbing six rebounds on the evening.
Seth Allen definitely played a secondary role in this contest even given his 24 minutes of play. It wasnt totally unexpected but he still put in a solid performance given the minutes he played. I just have to wonder about his satisfaction level as the season progresses considering there was quite the media chatter of Seth Allen being on alot of preseason award lists. Going to be tough for him to gain enough attention if his role stays the same.
Most critical was the concern over Leday being ready for play seems to have been washed away with his 20 points and 12 rebounds in only 26 minutes of play. Grain of salt is that we were playing Maine.
Only real negative I saw other than Hamilton was Chris Clarke needs to improve quickly on keeping his opponent within reach to challenge a shot on the perimeter. At least five times in the second half, Clarke allowed his opponent to get a clean look at a three which led to 12 points for Maine.
Only other thing that was surprising but needs a bit of work is Bibbs driving the ball. As the announcers said time and again, he has to find a way to either get fouled or finish inside. It was nice to see him progress with that part of his game though because last year he rarely drove inside. Hard to believe he didnt hit one of his inside shots but his only two baskets were from outside. 2-11 shooting from Bibbs against other opponents would likely cost us the game so I am sure Buzz will be working with him to find a balance.
Had to watch the first half again before commenting considering my technical difficulties but all in all it was a solid way to start the season, no haunting loss, but with plenty for Buzz to work with the guys on improving. Seven players scored at least six points on the evening, and four were in double figures so that is definitely positive.
Seth Allen is the 6th man on this team, not because of Buzzs roulette wheel determines starters but because Allen can't defend.
It's no fault of Allen, Rob and Hill are just better players and you need Bibbs shooting to stretch the D.
Just caught second half on my phone. Really liked what I think I saw from Hill, Robinson, LeDay, Clarke, and Sy. Getting Hill back is big (I think I know why Hudson left). Sy is much further along than I expected. Outlaw looked like he was rushing things.
I liked that they played like they knew what they were doing. Backcourt already looks like it's in a groove.
Does playing Galloway (and perhaps Wilson after football season) mean they will redshirt Pig?
