Shoutout to the Hokies Men's Soccer team for making it to the NCAA Tournament. They start off with a home game against East Tennessee State University at 6PM on this Thursday Nov 17th. Winner moves on to play #10 Charlotte. There are nine ACC teams that made the tournament this season. Tech went undefeated in Out of Conference play at 7-0-2. Pretty Impressive.
Women's basketball started off the season strong with wins over UNC-Asheville 71-52 and Georgetown 73-63. Sophomore guard Chanette Hicks is averaging 20 PPG with Magarity, Hill, and Cooke also all in double digits so far.
Women's soccer finished 11-5-3 on the year and were ranked for most of the season.
Wrestling has started their season 3-0 with wins over Edinboro, VMI and Chattanooga and are currently ranked #6. Their next match is at Northern Iowa which can be seen on FloWrestling.com. This match will pit #2 Dylan Peters(NI) vs #3 Joey Dance(Tech) at the 125 weight class. Another top matchup will be #6 Solomon Chishko(Tech) vs #18 Max Thomsen (NI). Virginia Tech has wrestlers ranked in the top 3 of their weight class in three other classes, #3 Ty Walz (Heavy Weight), #3 Jared Haught (197), #2 Zach Epperly (174), and one more in the top 10 #9 Zach Zavatsky (184).

Shame that the women's soccer team didn't make the tournament, seems like they were right on the bubble.
Is it bad that it irks me that 7-0-2 is considered "undefeated?"
Well, nobody actually beat them, so they are technically undefeated. They didn't lose any games, they just didn't win them all. It's not bad though. Ties are pretty high on the "Things Americans can't handle" list.
I get that they are undefeated, but at point does it begin to be something you don't brag about? 5-0-4? 4-0-5?
They best way I ever handled a tie was during an intramural softball game. We were tied with the VTCC team and the time horns had already sounded. When they made the last out to end the game in a tie, I burst off the bench in championship celebratory style yelling EVERYBODY WINS! EVERYBODY WINS!
Their only losses on the season by more than one goal were to #1 Notre Dame 4-1, and #3 UNC 2-0.
Of the ties, the only one that is quasi poor, is the 1-1 tie with Wright State, although they finished their season 11-6-3 and won the Horizon League.
They played seven ranked teams this season, going 2-4-1 against those opponents, so not many upsets pulled by this team this year.
The highest ranking they achieved on the year was #15 on two different occasions but finished the season ranked 28th.
Depending on the poll, the East Tennessee State team they just beat for the second time was actually ranked ahead of them.
They also tied their next opponent Charlotte, 2-2 earlier in the season, so hopefully the boys can come out on top this time.
I remember back when I was in high school, W&M made a living off tying better teams. They would stick their best defender on the best opposing striker and even then they'd pack the box whenever possible. In tournaments, they would win on PKs.
We got a term for that....its called parking the damn bus and eventually your luck runs out. Its not a good style to play and cant be sustainable. Smaller teams typically do it to bigger teams so that they dont get picked apart
Hopefully our lads win because I'm only a few minutes away from Charlotte's campus and would love to see them play.
NVM
....well now I want to know
Men's soccer wins its 1st Round game at home, 1-0. Advances to the round of 32 on Sunday.
Lady Hokies moved to 3-0 with 67-36 win over Presbyterian College.
Didn't know where else to mention this, but I was looking at the men's B'ball schedule and noticed that our friends in the ACC office scheduled our home game against Duke for New Year's Eve at noon.
Probably our biggest home game of the year and no students, no alum traveling long distance - I predict the attendance will beat LOLUVA's spring festival, but not by much......
That sucks!
There are a couple threads about the Men's Basketball schedule and how the ACC did us no favors in terms of home games against top teams being when the students are out amongst other things.
Here is the main one:

I'm considering making the pilgrimage to Blacksburg and celebrating the New Year there, hopefully while also celebrating a basketball victory and also a day removed from celebrating an Orange Bowl championship.
Lady Hokies win another one putting down UCF 67-64. Sidney Cook led the way with 17, one of three Hokies in double figures. Chanette Hicks with 15 to continue her double figure trend.
We won all the sportsballs this weekend!
#ALLTHEBALLZ
Soccer does not demand the lighting needs of football?
Tech Volleyball goes 3-0 on the weekend
Wrestling with the only blemish goes 1-1 with a win over #21 Northern Iowa but a loss to #5 Missouri.
Quite a weekend for Hokie Sports
Lady Hokies moved to 5-0 with a 71-61 win over College of Charleston. Chanette Hicks led the way with 22 points.
Lady Hokies just finished off the upset of #17 Tennessee 67-63 with key free throw shooting down the stretch. Hicks, Magarity and Cook accounted for 54 of Tech's 67 points. Hicks had 24, including four points in the final minute of regulation. This moves Tech to 6-0 to start the year.
Great article in today's Virginian pilot on Chanette Hicks, who is killing it defensively as well as averaging +18ppg.
Link!
Congratulations to Hicks on the selection as National Player of the Week.
Coach Fuente singing the praises of the Hokies' collective success:
The change in the athletic department is palpable, it feels completely different than just a few years ago. Whit has done a fantastic job, I am so thrilled we hired him. #WhitGetsIt
Hokie Woman's basketball down one to Nebraska lots of steals for the Lady HOKIES.
Hokies win 76-67! Go tech!
They win the game. Good week, so far.
Well, so I drink. Little late, but the wife's in the shower, I can get away with it.
ACC won the Women's Challenge as well with the help of the Lady Hokies
Men's Soccer Elite 8 @ Wake today 12/3, 17:00 (5pm EST) on ESPN3.
Also undefeated Women's b-ball back home Mon 7pm and Wed 6pm (doubleheader with the Men).
Three Hokies wrestlers won individual classes at two different tournaments this weekend. Joey Dance brought home a win at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite. Tech finished third overall. Two freshman won their weight classes at the Storm Open.
Unfortunately, Men's soccer lost to Wake Forest which ended their season.
That's ok. Awesome season! This is kinda OT, but I remember watching the Hokies Men Soccer play an exhibition game vs the Kickers back in '07. Keys were a ringing.
The newly ranked #25 Lady Hokies destroyed Gardner Webb 76-42 to move to 8-0 on the year. Cook led five Hokies in double figures with 17 points. Congrats to the Lady Hokies for breaking into the Top 25. Well deserved.
Crazy Stat of the night....the Lady Hokies pulled down 53 boards in this game, 21 on the offensive end.
hopefully they can keep the momentum going into acc play
Lady Hokies moved to 9-0 with a 81-47 win over Central Connecticut State, Sidney Cook leading the way with a double double of 17 and 10. Three other Hokies finished in double figures. This was the kind of performance we should have seen from the men's team tonight.
Lady Hokies are now 10-0 with the demolition of Bowling Green 98-51. Led by Samantha Hill with 21 points, six Hokies were in double figures in this game. The Lady Hokies taking a page out of the men's book went 13-26 from behind the arc in this game. Congrats to Coach Brooks on a hot start.
The athletic department is a smooth working machine right now just churning out dub after dub.. keep it up!
Hey folks I was stuck in the old rut and running low on VT sports energy. Two years and I feel like I am 20 again! Because:
The Dude leads!
Though we need to get him to Richmond for a proper tailor.
Anyone know where we stand for the all sports cup thing? Seems like we will do well this year, but I can't remember the name close enough for google.
I believe you are thinking of the Capital One Cup! Here's a link to the website.
You mean the Commonwealth Clash? Currently up 3.5 to UVA's 2.5 with a lot of sports to be filled in still
http://www.thecommonwealthclash.com/
The Director's Cup? Here's the link to standings - current standings only include cross country & FH, so we have 0 points. Updated standings will be out this week to include soccer.
We're 59th as of the 12/15 ranking (includes men's cross country, women's cross country, field hockey, water polo, men's soccer, women's soccer)
Rankings will be updated to include football on 1/14/17.
For reference, here's how we finished the last 5 years:
2015-16: 38th
2014-15: 35th
2013-14: 37th
2012-13: 36th
2011-12: 35th
It's almost impossible to beat the Entrenched top 20 schools here because of the sheer number of sports they offer.
Lady Hokies moved up to #24 in this weeks AP poll.
Whit will now have the opportunity to reshape the future of another Tech sport, with the resignation of the Women's Volleyball coach. Last time Tech made the tournament in Volleyball was in 2010.
Tonights a big night for the #24 Lady Hokies (10-0), who face Auburn (8-2) on the road at 5PM. The game will be shown on the SECNetwork so if you dont have something going on, tune in to watch.
In other good news for the Lady Hokies, Aisha Sheppard has signed her NLI. She is the #34 ranked girl in the 2017 class and a FIVE star recruit per ESPN rankings. Also signed was 3 Star Center Celeste Akoro, who ranked 14th overall amongst post players and 3 Star Forward Sierra Votaw who was 61st at her position. A pretty good haul for Coach Brooks in his first foray on the recruiting trail.
In other sports, the Wrestling team saw quite a bit of success this weekend. Brent Moore won the 141 Weight class at the Cleveland Open, along with David McFadden winning the 165 Weight class title. Two other wrestlers made the podium in their weight classes.
The rest of the wrestling team takes on West Virginia today starting at 2pm on FloWrestling
Use this link to watch live but it may require you have AppleTV or Roku or pay to have access to the sites streaming:

Unfortunately it doesnt appear to be available through the ACC.
Wait the wrestling team doesn't always wrestle as a full team?
Varsity Duels are the only full team matches. You can redshirt and still wrestle in collegiate events as an unattached wrestler as well. The wrestling team has about 40-50 wrestlers on both Varsity and JV, so VT can send people as individuals to tournaments, too.
Just turned on the Ladies, 1pt game in the 3rd. Anyone been watching? Good game?
Edit:
KendallKendyl Brooks on fire from downtown.Turnovers the only thing keeping this a game. Tech should be winning by 20 but 17 turnovers make that hard
I know it's the SEC Network, but you wouldn't know there's a top 25 team in the game as much camera time Auburn's staff is getting.
Wow that was some home cooking on that charge call on Hicks
This play may have just decided the game. Officials with the five point swing here that now has led to overtime.
Yeah that was crap. Defender is basically in mid air when contact is made and that's a charge?
Wow gotta protect the ball better. But playing well in OT, also helps that the best Auburn player got fouls trying to get Tech to the line.
11-0!
Women's bball win over auburn. Hicks took the team on her shoulders in OT
Lady Hokies move to 11-0 with a 92-87 win. Game turned in OT when Auburn point guard fouled out one minute in. Chanette Hicks then took over the game from there. If Hicks ever develops a three point shot she will be a complete nightmare if she isnt already. Three Hokies with double doubles in the win.
#6 Wrestling dismantled the cousins 36-4 to win the Black Diamond Brawl. Pretty solid Sunday in Hokieland
David McFadden returned to action winning the Cleveland State Open. McFadden finished 6th before tearing his ACL and would fill a pretty big hole at 165 in our lineup if he can return.
Looks like he wrestling unattached which means he still could potentially redshirt but it will be interesting to see if he is a go for the next match against Princeton.
Lady Hokies move up to #23 in this weeks AP Poll. Still completely baffled at a 5-4 Texas squad being ranked #16. I understand that all of their losses are to teams in the Top 11 but that still doesnt warrant a #16 ranking when their best win is over Tennessee, and no wins over any other ranked teams.
Chanette Hicks has been named the ACC Player of the Week and was an Also Considered for the second time for ESPNW Player of the Week, while winning that honor on November 28th. That means she has been considered one of the top five or six performers in the country in three of the six weeks that this honor has been voted on.
Hokies women's basketball team improves to 12-0 after a 71-52 victory over Radford!
Hokie sports write up here.
Also, starting next month I'll (try to remember to) post a new "other sports" thread monthly. Go Hokies!
The #19 Lady Hokies put away Delaware State tonight 88-48 to ,over to 13-0 on the season. Cook and Magarity with double doubles and six Hokies in double figures tonight.
First post. Not enough legs to start a new topic, so I'll throw this in here. Feel free to copy into a new post if you'd like.
For any interested cycling fans; former Hokie, Ben King has won two stages of this year's Vuelta a EspaΓ±a so far (8 stages remain). He was just named to the US Cycling Worlds team:
