We have a great defense, a great running back, and a surprisingly good O-line. Receivers and and special teams need a lot of work, but they will get better. I'm predicting a 10-2 season, possibly 11-1. Oh and I think Logan will go as far as these receivers go.
GO HOKIES!

Amen to the as far as the receivers will let them comment. What the hell happnened to DJ Coles? But overall a very encouraging start to the season. A lot of upside!
I hate to say it, but Coles is playing in pain. It reminds me of when Ryan Williams fumbled at the end of the game in week 2 versus New England last year. 8 months later he admitted he dropped the ball because he was scared about getting hit in his knee. I'm not trying to be negative on this depressing ass day, but sorry that it is.

Damn right.
Acknowledging a problem, taking responsibility, and promising to fix it. I love it.
God, I love Aaron Moorehead and Jeff Grimes.
I've been critical of him tonight, but that is exactly what I wanted to see.
I think this is a major point to reference to our defense: We were the first time to hold Bama to under 100 rushing yards since the LSU 9-6 game in 2011. I think that is something we should be happy to build on. This also means that Trey Edmunds outrushed the entire Bama team. Another thing we should be happy to build on. (We actually evened out with Bama's offense, us 212 to their 206. Not the best thing, to have more offense than lose, but something to note)
Ok what to say what to say well start with the good.....hokies defense....dear god monstrous I apologize for comparing them to the 07 D because the 07 D isn't even comparable and the 07 D is my favorD I've ever seen. Our oline looked so much better than I've ever seen (grimes is one hell of a coach) and Edmunds.....I think I crapped my pants on that run HE'S a BEAST I love him he's everything French hyped him up to be nd more the guys a monster....however now for the bad and feel free to criticize me on this but our special teas (aside from punting and kicking) looked HORRENDOUS if beamer can't keep up in that then he should hand the reigns to someone else, iunno who but he should if he's struggling like he is. Second god knows our WRs looked really bad moorehead has his work cut out for him because good lord I've seen high schoolers with better hands... They looked ok with being second best tonight....3rd and finally (im prepared to be roasted for this) Logan looked awful too....yes his receivers didn't do him any favors but he spiked the football into the ground on a few occasions had time and a running game and struggled looking off his receivers I was really disappointed with him and he made a bad situation worse
If you guys saw something I didn't please feel free to comment and roast me but I was seriously disappointed in LT but I was so happywith Edmunds and the D and this game showed a ton of promise I bet it bodes for a really good season and a really promising future I also was SO happy with the play calling it was actually difficult to predict (so strange for me) anywho I don't wanna come off like a negative Nancy because I really think we have a top 10 maybe top 5 D without 3 starters
Go hokies gobble gobble here's to a bright future
Also when I say beamer should hand the reigns over I don't mean as a head coach I mean as a special teams coordinator
Also I've had a few to many drinks tonight so pardon the bad English I thought i did halfway decent with this pos
I saw one bad throw out of Logan, and one deep ball that was a bit too strong. His mechanics look solid to my eyes and he was hitting his guys in the hands and/or chest and they were failing him. His stat line looks abysmal, but the eye test says differently. Just my $0.02.
I agree completely with this. I saw 2 questionable decisions, about 2 bad throws, and lots of throwaways and tons of drops. I was very happy to see good decision making, for the most part, good mechanics and the ability to get out of the pocket and avoid taking sacks. LT3 is gonna be a good QB this year.
You can say that again. French has called it from day one that Edmunds was the best back on the team. I didn't really see it until tonight (hell, I think at one point I even said that Holmes was as good an option as Edmunds was as a starting RB).
There's no doubt now that. Edmunds is the real effin deal. Dude can play some football. Can't wait to see what he's going to do the rest of the way.
0:23 - 0:25 :)
Big props to Darius Redman coming across left to right to get a huge block.
And of course to the O-line. Andrew Miller charged straight into the second level to get a huge block as well.
Great play.
Any back with the motor to out sprint bama secondary is a special back. Edmunds certainly proved that he is legit.
That play is where the moral victory was won. After this, I didn't even care what the final score was. It wasn't just Edmunds. Every player showed what a Hokie is for the 1st 2 seconds after the snap. Trey couldn't have done it without the guys around him stepping up. Even though Redman got pancaked, without that brief contact, the play would have been stopped at the line of scrimmage.
I was freaking pumped after this play.
Disagree on LT3 he looks like a Senior QB making the reads and throws...He was progressing though his reads...Felt the pressure in the pocket well and made great decisions...he can't catch the ball for the wide outs.
Pump the brakes man. We're going nowhere fast unless we put some more points up. I know this was Alabama but let's keep things in check here. I'm just as optimistic as everyone here because our defense played fantastic tonight but there's some things we have to settle on offense before we start talking about winning out. I really don't want to seem negative because I feel great but after last season I think we need to take this in stride.
Really though, based on what I saw today our defense is going to murder UVA's offense.
Our receivers make easy catches and LT pulls the string about 2 feet on a deep throw, and I think we have a much different game on our hands. Just sayin. Lots of correctable mistakes.
I agree 100%. Tonight's game is totally different if we clean up on ST too. Personally, I'm cautious to expect something like that. I'm definitely excited though, and the mistakes in tonight's game were fixable - not like last years which were embedded into the kid's DNA.
I kind of hate how much positivity is coming out of how we played today. 11-1 is crazy talk at this point.
We played very well (for the most part) against an elite team. I think a little optimism is warranted. Granted, 11-1 might be overdoing it a tad, but I think this team still has all the pieces to be great. Just have to hold on the the ball and someone needs to channel their inner Tweedy and start stepping up on special teams.
Agreed 100%.
Haha yeah I will admit I am being a little over optimistic when I say that this team can go 11-1 but if this offense can improve with a favorable schedule then it could be a really good year.
I have a problem I hope everyone else is seeing. Since Beamer went away from playing starters on Special Teams our special teams have been not so special. Am I the only one who has noticed this?
Hopefully this game will be a message to him to change it back to the way it was.
Kyle Fuller agrees. From David Teel's blog:
What I noticed is Dmitri looks very timid returning kicks and it hurt us in field position. I know he's back there because he's a burner but if he is going to continue he has to pick a lane and hit it rather than waiting for one to develop every time. Totally agree we do not use as many of our best athletes on ST as we used to and Beamerball is no longer a relevant tag! We used three different punt returners, why? KJ obviously has a nack for it put him back there every time and let him get in a groove.
KJ has had that nagging hamstring injury, so i'm pretty sure that's why they were trying out some different options. Of course when they finally put him back there, he picks up 30 or so yards.
Trey is a beast and I have not seen such a good Hokie D since 2007. Moorehead's tweet gives me hope that the young receivers can be coached up and will be better as the season goes along and it seems like Grimes has the O-line working as a cohesive unit. I'm wondering whats up with Loeffler's game plan has he always run alot of shotgun?
I believe Loeffler wanted to run a lot of shotgun against Bama because of how they line up against shotgun formations.
Mark May just said that Bama's O-line was awful. Gave no credit to Tech's D-line.
Shocker
Mark May also went to Pitt.
The problem is...for as excited as people on here are about a 25 point loss, the Hokies are currently completely irrelevant and there is no reason for ESPN to give us credit
What makes you say that? Holding the 2 time defending national champs to 206 total yards makes you irrelevant?
With ESPN, no one is relevant unless you are a national title contender (because we can predict that on week 1) or a Heisman contender (which is really just them talking out of their rears for the whole season).
So true.
I don't want us to have a Heisman contender. It isn't given to the best football player, but who will earn espn the most money. It represents all that is wrong with college football. Hokies are a team, not a player.
it's true, all you hear 12 months a year from the mothership is heisman, heisman, heisman. i honestly dont think most fans give that much of a shit. dont get me wrong i'd love for someone to bring it home to bburg but when i'm sitting around with my friends tailgating i've never heard anyone say, "so who do yall think will win the heisman?"
Amen. We don't care what giraffes think about our team!
You take that back...I find Heather Dinch's pieces to be informative and a refreshing breath of fresh air..

Breath of fresh air for the halitosis kids
Horse did you know that FSU is back this year?

Well it looks like it, doesn't it. Pitt's offense didn't look to shabby early on, either. This Winston kid is sick.
I may repeat some things already said, but figured I'd just make one post instead of a scattered 10. Someone above said Logan looked awful. I wouldn't say awful but I could understand just watching AT the game. I blamed him a little too, but when I got home and watched the game again on TV, he actually deserves little to no blame. The Wide Receivers were the cause and get a huge F. I counted 9 drops, one or two being tough catches, but have to bring it in when you get two hands on it. Logan put it where they could make a play and they failed time after time. My only criticism of Logan would be that he looked at times like he was playing not to lose instead of to win (scared to throw a pic and mess up his under 5), but I still can't blame him for that since the WR's give him no reason for him to trust them.
Everyone summed it up pretty well about the D and Trey Edmunds. Both could take us a long way this year. I know some are saying we need to watch the hype, but I think we feel so excited because we all know we have a very manageable schedule from here out. If our D plays phenomenal like that, Edmunds and the O-line stay solid, SPT gets fixed, and the fact that our WR's can't be any worse after that performance, then I think we have a chance of winning out (once again, based on our schedule). I know we always seem to lose one we shouldn't but I'd be shocked if we lost more than one or two games the rest of the way.
