Yeah, I have a feeling UNC is going to get a relatively minor punishment compared to this from the NCAA and then get the big hit from whoever accredits and audits them.
Their accrediting body already ruled on them. They got one year of probation.

And that was the biggest joke of them all. The accrediting body didn't care about 15+ years of academic fraud.

That's so adorable.
This is a meaningless punishment but may provide ND the ability to back off their support of Brian Kelly earlier this season. If they get crushed by USC-w this weekend and the qb goes pro, the AD could dump Kelly under academic integrity vs. 1 bad season, and appease the fan base.
I agree. Kelly is chirping (as always). But vacating wins is by far the crappiest penalty the NCAA can give. I mean, we sudden forget they played the games?
It's the equivalent of the NCAA coming into your home, hooking up your playstation 2, inserting your NCAA '05 video game, deleting one of your dynasty profiles. They then promptly put everything back the way it was for you and say "next time we will delete your most recent profile, so yeah, don't do that again."

That's always been my biggest gripe with it. It's also not as though the teams who lost to Notre Dame those years suddenly get to claim that they actually won. I'm more a fan of penalties that make it harder for the program to win games in the future, because trying to take away wins that have already happened isn't fooling anybody.
Again, I think back to when GT got hit for their final three games of the season, including the ACCCG. If those penalties had been enforcible in real time, VT would have been Coastal champs, and our entire postseason would have looked different.
Vacating wins is stupid. All it does is put an asterisk in a book. "Oh, Notre Dame was 12-1, but the NCAA officially only recognizes one game that they played in, so they're 0-1."

Before my trip to South Bend, I would've laughed at ND for this. But their fans were so bloody nice, I like the Irish now. I got thanked like 80 times for coming up for the game by Domers and they even bought me drinks at the bar afterwards. Screw the NCAA anyway. A corrupt organization dishing out penalties for corruption? Whatever.
Fully agree. I've hated the ND since the 90's when I better understood how they could screw the big east and now acc in bowl games and BCS standings.
But they have to be the most gracious fans I've ever been around. Both before and after the game they came up to us and welcomed us to note dame, wished us a good game, congratulated us on the win and wished me a safe trip back. I only hope tech fans act half as welcoming as their fans. Awesome experience and new found respect for Irish nation.

That's what cracks me up about vacating wins. It doesn't freaking matter. Everyone remembers that game. The two teams played it. It isn't just removed from our memory.
If you want to punish a team then you strip some scholarships.
Scholarships hurt. But IMO $Millions and loss of TV appearences would be a good punishment.
Especially when you go look it up, and it'll show their record as 0-1 for that year.
They never vacate losses.
And it makes Kelly's record at ND even worse.

So the NCAA nails a school for doing the right thing and reporting a violation that they discover. NCAA even admits that the football program (coaches, admin, etc) had zero idea that a trainer was doing homework for a handful of players. Then they turn around and nail the program.
I have ZERO love lost for ND or Brian Kelly, but this is absurd. They've basically told schools "cover up for as long as you can, because if you self report, you'll get nailed just as hard as if you cover up". At the same time, they are going to let UNC off with no penalties, even though you have a greater chance of winning Powerball in back to back weeks, than the number of football and and basketball players just "happening across" the bogus AFAM courses.
