Virginia Tech's 52-10 win over Virginia was the last football game of the season for me (unless a bowl game schedule/location works out favorably), so let's start this one off with a bang:

(I will never, ever, get tired of taking this photo.)
My old trusty Canon 7D bit the dust during the Georgia Tech game a couple weeks ago (Paul Johnson chop blocked it), so I decided it was a good time to upgrade to the state of the art. Not 45 minutes before I walked into Lane, I unboxed a like-new 7D Mark II, which just blew me away in its first round of action. I've got 74 selections in the gallery this week, so I put together some highlights for everyone. Afterwards, view the rest of the gallery, and as always, you can see all the photography that we've put together of the years at http://photos.thekeyplay.com.

Something that I like to do is take a step back and get some background to frame things in, which at 70mm still gives you a sense of depth as well.

Take a look and count how many players are trying to bring down Sam Rogers.

Cam Phillips hauls in a long touchdown pass along the sideline.

Jerod Evans celebrates his rushing touchdown in the second quarter. When he spiked the ball, Skipper went off at the same exact moment it hit the ground.

Cavman (I had to google if this was one or two words), looks down the sidelines while looking like a member of the Thunderbirds.

Next to the new camera, I also picked up a 17-40 f/4 L, which I've been very impressed with so far.

As soon as I pointed the camera at these two, they held up a very coordinated thirteen fingers. I approve of the pre-planning.

The lighting in Lane turned into somewhat of a two-face in the second half, with the South half still bathed in sunlight. Shooting South to North put the players in front of a dark background that really made them pop out.

We get Justin Fuente's first Gatorade bath as a Hokie. Thankfully, the stadium security staff was nowhere to be found as all the photographers snuck into the team bench area to stalk out the bath right before it happened. Also, you can get a great look at fellow TKP (and Getty) photographer Michael Shroyer's camera and hand!

Tastes like 13 straight.

Fantastic work, thanks!
way to ruin the shot, Shroyer /s
this looks like a where's waldo..oh, found him.

Yeah, I screwed Mark's shot up. Feel bad about it, but I didn't totally throw my camera in front of his either.
Got a lovely wet lens for my efforts. Glad it wasn't Gatorade!!
The fact that either of you were able to get reasonable pictures in the midst of all this mayhem is admirable.
I'll call it "adding depth to the photo" instead of screwing it up :)
man do I look smug
I think that's Shroyer's camera on the ground in the Skipper shot as well.
Our 3rd string qb?
Future, I love this MI recruit.
Damn. Looks like Lawson has gained some weight.
I'd love to see him run the option! Watch out DB's!
Love photography and I'm super jealous you get to shoot the games....
The Bucky Hodges pic is great cuz it's a ball he didn't have to lay out for, he just likes to fall down to catch things.
Did TKP have anyone at Notre Dame taking photos? I was hoping someone caught a picture of the wife and I celebrating with the players after the game.
We did not, sadly.
That pic of Bud smiling makes me so happy.
I love how the tree in the back ground is decked out in its best Hokie Maroon for the game.
@Mark - In that last shot (drinking from the Cup), what's going on with the guy running a Pocket Wizard? Remote camera somewhere? Got a Alien Bee strapped to his back? Seemed so odd to me.
Related, I always love your work on the games. I shoot a little high school football and I try to learn what I can from studying. Makes me super jealous, too!
Chances are they had a remote camera previously and just don't want to lose the pocket wizard (Alternative answer, they had it up on a monopod to get high and shoot down and were triggering it remotely)
I'm looking through my post game stuff now and I think it was Lee Luther Jr from Lynchburg. Camera on monopod... would like to see what he ended up getting.
Cool. I'd like to see the results of that too. Thanks to both of you for replying!
I love having Bruce Smith on the sidelines. It's like the Godfather is in the House.
Dude's got some big hands
Yeah, but does he wear size 3XL gloves?
I have to admit Cavman freaks me out a little bit.
Reminds me of that Okie St cowboy guy.
It's understandable. I'm pretty sure he was cast as an extra on the "Team America: World Police" movie:

Cavman:

I thought the exact same thing. Facial expression = "My God..."
Durk durk, Allah. Muhammad jihad.
Fuente showing his softer side:
We should rank the best pictures of the year from the galleries.
Yeah, after the bowl game, we should do a TKP photo of the year!
Is Campaign Hat guy the same guy who used to wear the orange wig and "Estrada" sunglasses?
Also, I wish I was as resistant to the cold as Hilgart is.
