ACC/Big10 Challenge
Buzzketball takes on the Wolverines in the ACC/BIG10 Challenge. The challenge is tied at 4 wins for each conference going into tonight's matchups. This will be the sixth time Tech has faced Michigan on the court. The Hokies are 1-4 all time, with a 65-53 win over the Wolverines in the 2002 Virgin Islands Paradise Jam.
Michigan come in favorites with a KenPom ranking of #25 and a money line making them six point favorites Michigan will be another opponent that has a tall lineup compared to the Hokies. Michigan has seven roster spots that go 6'8 or taller so the Hokies are going to need to be able to push the pace on this game from the opening tip to the final buzzer.
One thing Michigan does have in common with the Hokies is a well balanced offense with three double digit scorer's and two others above 8 PPG. The Wolverines rely on an eight man rotation so far this season. Regardless of their size down low, Michigan's primary scorers are their guards, working in tandem to bring an inside drive and an outside shot to each game.
The Wolverines come in 5-1 with wins over #314 Howard, #182 IUPUI, #40 Marquette, #39 SMU, and #254 Mount St Marys. Michigan's only loss came against #36 South Carolina.
The Wolverines are an established roster with three seniors in the starting rotation, one other as the sixth man. No freshmen play a major role and only one sophomore and one junior break into the starting lineup regularly. The Hokies need to build a big lead and be able to defend it considering the experience Michigan brings to the table here.
Michigan is coached by John Beilein, who took over the program in 2007. Michigan has been quite successful under his leadership, with six NCAA tournament appearances in nine seasons, with a loss in the National Championship in 2013. Beilein has taken four different programs to NCAA tournament as well as one other to the D-II Playoffs. He is one of only three coaches to have 20 win seasons at Division I, II, and III going 20-6 with Nazareth in 1983, 24-6 with Lemoyne in 1988, and 31-8 with Michigan in 2013. (Represents his best at each level, as he had twenty plus wins at Canisius, Richmond, West Virginia and Michigan) As good as Beilein has been, the Hokies look to hand him his 400th career loss tonight. (and prevent his 670th win)
Defensively, the Wolverines primarily run man-to man defense while in out of conference play but also employ a 1-3-1 zone and a 2-3 zone when Coach Beilein thinks it is opponent appropriate. In this game, the Hokies possess a height/size advantage on the perimeter but are the opposite under the basket. The 1-3-1 defense combined with Michigan's height advantage inside will make ball movement to the interior extremely difficult. In the 1-3-1, at least one big will position himself in a frontal defensive position to whomever is in the lane for the Hokies, while their two guards will try to cut off the corner pass or the cross court pass at the top of the key by positioning themselves in the passing lane. Weaknesses in this zone are a complete cross court pass to a perimeter shooter and also being able to drive the ball inside forcing the zone to breakdown.
Offensively, Coach Beilein runs whats known as the Beilein Two Guard Offense which compared to Buzz' offense has many similarities. Beilein's offense spaces four players to the perimeter while rotating one man to the interior. In his bigs, he looks for those that pass the ball well to the perimeter, because this offense keys on hitting open shots. The intricacies of this offense though are the precise movements of the players, especially off the ball that it requires and the willingness to make the next pass rather than settle for a poorer shot. The offense is focused on waiting for the defense to make a mistake and then exposing that error.
What does that mean for the Hokies?
The Hokies advantage as it will be most of the season is speed and athleticism. Other than that though they might be looking at a slightly taller inside version of themselves tonight. Similar offensive styles, similar fluctuations on defense depending on opponents on the floor. The way the Hokies win is if they can push the pace and force Michigan into mistakes.
The Hokies if facing the zone defenses from Michigan will need Seth Allen, Chris Clarke and Justin Robinson driving the ball to the basket early and often. If facing the man to man, then they need to find the speed mismatch amongst their opponent and expose it. Michigan is a fairly disciplined team though so expect to see this game fluctuate back and forth most of the night.
Khadim Sy needs a bounce back game tonight to keep Michigan honest in the lane, especially on the defensive end.
Each team is shooting around 25 three point attempts per game, so whichever team is more successful in converting these shots will hold a big edge. This game though Tech needs to not get lost out there and find ways to work inside, causing the Michigan bigs foul troubles.
Michigan players do not stop moving on the offensive side of the ball so keeping up with this movement and being prepared for the shots will be important for the Hokies defensively. The Hokies will need to find a way to disrupt the Michigan passing game and create turnovers so that they can score in transition.
Wolverines Backcourt
Derrick Walton Jr, #10, 6'1, 190 lbs Senior guard plays the point for the Cornhuskers. So far this season he is knocking down 13.8 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 3.5 APG, while shooting better from outside at 43% than inside 36%. Webster so far is shooting 96% from the charity stripe so this is not the guy Tech wants to have to foul late to try to come back against. Fortunately he is only averaging about 4 trips to the line per game.
Senior Zak Irvin, #21, 6'6, 215 lbs is putting up 12.8 PPG, 5 RPG, and 3.5 APG. Irvin and Walton are interchangeable at the top of the key for Michigan. Irvin is much less likely to be found taking a perimeter shot though, relying more on his ability to drive to the basket or create an open look for another shooter.
Junior Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman, #12, 6'4, 190 Lbs is the wing in this offense, right now averaging 9.5 PPG, 2.7 RPG, and 1.5 APG. I unfortunately expect a big game out of him because it will likely fall to Clarke or Hill to close out on him on the perimeter and both have been slow to do so this season.
Senior Guard Duncan Robinson, #22, 6'8, 215 lbs covers the sixth man role, bringing a bigger body to the outside. He averages 5.3 PPG, 2.5 RPG, while shooting terribly from the field. Known more for his defensive presence outside, he makes getting a clean shot difficult with the extra height to his advantage. He is only on the floor when one of the other three above needs a breather. Walton, Irvin and Abdur-Rahkman all average over 31 minutes per contest so far this season.
Wolverines Frontcourt
Senior Forward Mark Donnal,#34, 6'9, 240 lbs provides 10 PPG, and 4.2 RPG, while shooting 63% from the field. Donnal also shoots well from the perimeter as well as the free throw line shooting 66% and 87% respectively. Expect to see a lot of movement from this big man to try to create holes in the lane while only being on the floor for about half the game.
Sophomore Forward Moritz Wagner, #13, 6'11, 240 lbs. who is contributing 8 PPG, 3.3 RPG, while shooting 55% from the field and 55% from behind the arc. Wagner accounts for most of the minutes that Donnal is not on the floor. Tough assignment trying to guard him on the perimeter but you have to do it considering his ability to hit from outside.
Junior Forward D.J. Wilson, #5, 6'10, 240 Lbs gives the Wolverines around 27 MPG right now, acting as their primary big man in the lane. He isn't as adept a scorer as his counterparts but is a rebounding machine. He comes in averaging 6.5 PPG, 8.2 RPG, 1 APG, and 1.7 BPG.
Names Announcers will Butcher
Michigan brings a mouthful to challenge the announcers. First there is Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman followed by Ibi Watson, Brent Hibbitts, and Moritz Wagner. That first one makes Khadim Sy easy enough to say.
What to expect from Michigan?
Michigan will start this game playing man to man defense but hopefully be forced to change to a zone as the Hokies beat them off the dribble early in this game. Once Michigan shifts to a zone, the Hokies will have to adjust to some perimeter shooting.
In a half court set, the Wolverines regularly move without the ball, using cuts and picks to create open shots. Two of their bigs move extremely well, even out to the perimeter. Michigan forces opponents to guard all five players rather than being able to concentrate on just one or two.
Rebounding wise, Michigan is a little light due to how often they have four players on the perimeter. Michigan may need to collapse down to start getting second chance rebounds in this game, especially if they want to prevent Sy and Leday from having giant games.
The Hokies

Hopefully the Hokies reached Michigan well rested, after spending an extra day on the West Coast before travelling to Ann Arbor. They will need fresh legs tonight to be able to run. A frenzied pace, with controlled shooting, could be the turning point in winning this game for the Hokies. They cannot afford another second half like they had against A&M or a first half like the Nebraska game because Michigan is not likely to have a bad first half like the Cornhuskers.
Somewhat Dj vu, another BIG10 team, another team with experience in their starters but not much depth. If the Hokies can get into the bench of Michigan, it becomes a much more manageable contest. Michigan has three guards playing more than three quarters of each game, find a way to short circuit that and its definitely a Hokies advantage.
Be prepared to adjust based on Michigan's defensive approach if the Hokies aren't scoring in transition. Beilein will have his guys ready to go and I expect them to try to confuse the Hokies on the offensive end of the court to gain an advantage. The Tech guards need to blow right past this to drive to the basket causing all kinds of havoc.
Highlight of the Nebraska Game
Highlight of the game: there were two emphatic dunks in this game, both by Hill. One was the exclamation point at the end of the game, but the other was even more beautiful because you saw him realize he had a path and it didn't matter that defenders rose to stop him, he was still putting that ball home.

In Closing
This game will be like looking in a distorted mirror from a traveling fair. Both teams run similar offenses and defenses, one is just a little faster, while the other is a little bigger. Otherwise, what you see on each end will look pretty much the same, just alternating uniforms and positions.
The key to this game could be getting someone from Michigan's starting five into foul trouble. So far this year, the Wolverines have been able to run the floor with their full complement of players. If Tech can force them further down their bench, the talent drops off significantly, especially in the guard play offensively speaking. Making the Michigan guards reach on drives to the basket could be a critical factor.
There will be stretches in this game where perimeter shooting will be all the Hokies can manage so hitting their open shots will likely determine if they stay in the game or fall behind an experienced Michigan squad.
Tech wins this game in a slugfest that likely goes down to the final minutes. I expect a lower score than normal so a final of 62-58 seems about right with the way each team plays. The higher the scores get, the more likely Tech has an advantage.

Comments
Danny Coale caught that ball.
It was a catch!
Got the DVR set as I don't get home until 6:30 AZ time, so game will be almost over by then.
Love these write ups and love that VT Basketball is again a thing I set my DVR for.
Gotta make some serious shit happen tonight. DO IT!
Exciting to play a top team and see how we stack up.
I want Zach to break a backboard to avenge Danny's catch!
Wish granted.
This always gets a leg. And then I bury my feelings in beer.
Red Five standing by. I've got a damn good feeling about tonight, ladies and gents. Thanks for the excellent write-up and Go Hokies!
I think we lose a tight one 71-68. Buzz is still searching for a signature road win at Tech. We're getting closer though, and it makes me happy.
In regards to the Danny Coale catch, Brady Hoke got fired from Oregon as defensive coordinator today. Ever since Michigan stole that Sugar Bowl from us, Hoke's career has gone downhill.
But I'm sure that's just a coincidence, right?
Tough call on that charge!
They hardly made contact. Hope that's not an indication of how the night's gonna go
Jesus. Looks like we're going to be playing against the refs again tonight.
We look really tired tonight. Probably still feeling the effects of the West Coast tourney.
Yuck. Could be ugly tonight y'all.
We are getting worked.
Definitely not enough energy tonight so far. Lot of bad little mistakes adding up so far.
Stupid turnovers and Michigan can't miss. This one is gonna be tough.
One of the dumbest developments of the season. I saw it last night in a couple of games. They're now calling a double dribble if you "dribble" once to gather a pass or loose ball. It hasn't been called that way since I started watching college bball in 2004. I don't get it. Its not even called that way at the high school level
The only thing I'm taking reassurance from is the fact that Michigan can't keep this type of 3 point shooting up. Percentages just don't support it.
All these open outside looks are killing us.
Flat. This team is flat. Michigan is making their shots, but VT is just flat right now.
It looks like Michigan, when they miss is not crashing the offensive boards and instead is taking away our transition game.
Allowing that big to drive from the perimeter was ridiculous
Impatient Clark strikes again.
Teams last year kept having record days beyond the arc for us. First real team I've been able to see us play this year and I'm glad to see things haven't changed /s
This has not been true this year. We haven't done a good job contesting tonight which has made Michigan's good 3 point shooting great tonight.
Commentators already not talking about the game. Yikes.
Ten points given up on reverse layups
...and another wasted opportunity. Stupid plays killing us
A little bit of salesmanship on the charge call by Robinson, but we'll take it.
True, but if Hill committed an offensive foul and Sy traveled, that's definitely an offensive foul
Agreed.
How many bad plays can we commit in a row?
VT just cannot stop giving away the ball tonight.
2 good defensive plays but unable to gather rebound on one and then shitty pass by Bibbs on another leads to 5 points.
Definitely picked up the energy. Hopefully Michigan starts missing.
Not happy how Robinson keeps getting matchuped with their center on defensive rotations. Luckily Michigan hasn't taken advantage.
If we can get it to 10 or less at the half, we have a shot.
I don't want to jinx it but Sy sets the best screens by a freshman. There's 0 chance of picking up illegal screens if he sticks with his technique. Which has been an issue with other bugs.
I think you mean bigs. Sy is having a good game tonight. He's still having some Freshman moments, but he is starting to develop his offensive game.
I definitely meant freshman - they're less likely to be patient and try to do too much. But it does apply to bigs mostly since they're most likely to be setting them.
Really fed up with Allens nonchalant attitude about ball control.
Down 9? I'll take it.
Agreed we should be down at least 15
It would be nice if Big 10 Network announcers we're forced to listen to were at least adequate. Or at the very least, paying attention to the game
Oh no, these aren't no Big 10 Network announcers. Trust me. You would know.
I watched the VT-Indiana soccer game on BTN and they were basically saying the only reason VT had so many yellow cards this season is because Tech is a dirty team. And whenever Indiana did something remotely bad, they blamed either the ref (??) or the fact that they're just playing down to a bad team. It was appalling that a national TV channel would allow that on air.
Anyway. /rant.
The only reason I said that was because at the beginning of the game they said you're watching the B10 on ESPN. But you know what happens when you assume...
Yes makes sense! But BTN is very very different than B10 on ESPN. Just like we have ACC on ESPN I guess.
As frustrating as this game has been, if VT can clean up the mistakes and hang on to the ball then they should have a good second half.
This was the slow half we couldn't afford because now our guys will be worn out just getting us even and those last few minutes when they need to step on the gas it may not be there. Beating ourselves is the sad part.
Looks like we are playing with a bit more purpose at the start of this half.
Crap another charge on Hill.
I expected a better crowd from Michigan. Pretty weak
Also, Duncan Robinson looks like Macklemore and I resent him for it
Hill playing terrible tonight.
Threes not falling tonight.
Danger time for the Hokies. Need to get some stops and need to avoid trading baskets.
Annnnd that's the backbreaker right there.
That Michigan three as the shot clock expiring, might be the beginning of the end.
And pure garbage falling for Michigan a shot clock expires. Then 2 bad ref calls.
I forgot how much I hate watching basketball because the refs are somehow even worse than football refs
Even the announcers are saying the refs are against us.
Trading baskets now. If its more than 5 with 5 to go we are done.
Well it's a 4 point game with 4:55 left, are we done?
I think we have a punchers chance, but we'll need the D to step up.
Wow ref.
Strong move by LeDay there. Hoop and 1!
3 charges on Hill - and he's gone!
lol at the "VT, please beat Clemson" sign
Also, my cable on campus has been going in and out the entire last 2 minutes because of the storm and it decided to come back for the ads. Nice.
Glad it's not just me. Was wondering if Comcast installed a dish on my roof without my knowledge
ESPN 2 was awful for me as well. TV went completely black for like 3 minutes.
I can't see one Michigan fan without seeing this Michigan fan. They're all the same to me now
nice foreshadowning!
At least we got 2 highlights in the ACC title game promo.
Zach Le fuckin Day. MVP of this team.
Just keep in ourselves at arms length of finishing the comeback
Great ball movement to set up the Bibbs 3.
Wilson gone now but is it enough
Me oh my.
This team. Wow.
Ouch babe!
Omgomgomgomg.
threes are clutch... both ways
Clutch airball
But they got a second chance and buried it.
That's my point. He doesn't airball and we get the rebound.
Ah missed that subtlety.
We're going to lose on a buzzer beater. Has that kind of a feel to it.
Horrible call on that.
homer call all day
God damnit Seth
Can't do that but it's a very tacky call
In bound the ball and make free throws.
Cmon Bibbs!
I watched for 10 minutes around the 9 min mark. What I watched was bad D and bad shooting.
what. a. game.
I swear if my cable goes out on the inbounds
Was yours cattywompus throughout the game? Mine had all sorts of problems all game long.
Mine started when it started raining (in Richmond) about 6 minutes left in the 2nd half I believe
Oh okay. Mine was in Blacksburg and was in and out the whole time. No real weather here. Just shitty Comcast I guess.
HOKIES!
FAM!
Edit: but for real, those refs tried their hardest to give the game to Michigan
Damn what a game. Great job Hokies!!
HOKIES
No quit in these guys. What a fun team to watch. Go Hokies, great win!
Hell yeah Hokies!!! I was gonna get in bed but I'm gonna make another drink good win boys
WHOOOO
WIN!
FAM!!! TWO WINS AGAINST THE B1G IN A ROW!!
What a freaking game! I know we looked horrible in the first half, but we could've mailed this in on tired legs and a week away from home, and we gutted it out and then held on! So proud of this team.
WOW. What. A. Comeback!
Go Hokies!
ACC up 7-4. And favorites in final 3 games.
Wow! This team has skills. But more importantly, they got hearts!
oh, and you're welcome ACC
Every time I watched from the living room, we played horribly, but if I sat in the office and just listened we did better. I sacrificed watching the second half and just listened.
Regardless, I will take the win. Go Hokies
Thank you for your efforts!
Wow. That's something else. Go Hokies!
Gutsy win. A lot of growing up going on.
Reminded me of the notre dame game! I'm not going to live long at this rate!
Awesome win! Go Hokies!
What a great comeback! This team has some heart, baby!
FINAL FOUR
FINAL FOURRRRRR
NINTENDO SIXTY FINAL FOOOOUUUUURRRRRR
Holy hell! Way to close out Hokies!
I was able to start watching with 8 minutes left, so I got to watch the comeback without the early frustrations. :)
Ha ha, me too!
Wow, did that really just happen? Niiiiiiiiiiice!
Go Hokies, nice win Buzz.
Complete opposite feel of the Texas A&M game. Felt like we got outplayed. Hokies!
This is the type of win that gets you into the dance. A lot of basketball left, but great resume builder.
This W goes to my wife. When Michigan extended their lead to 10, she said she couldn't believe I wasn't drinking. I poured myself a bourbon and the rest is history.
Free throws won the game, 19/21
This - a few years ago we used to get to the line a lot and then shoot 60% leave 6-10 points on the floor. Free throws were clutch tonight.
Unfortunately the Michigan whiners will point to this as them getting screwed by the officials (again.)
They have a Sugar Bowl win because of officiating. They can tell it to the judge
*hands mic to rvaHokie21 so they can drop it*
If only I could actually say that. I work with a bunch of UofM homers and I am sure its all I am going to hear about tomorrow.
I will probably just shrug and smile.
My boss is a Michigan fan and she readily admits that the refs blew it in 2011
The perseverance is what stands out most. Lot of positives to take away from this boys. It's going to be a good year.
Holy fucking shit I love this team.
Would have paid money to have been a fly on the wall at halftime. Buzz woke those boys up from their halftime slumber.
Really good win. These are the ones that get you Dancing by seasons end.
Great win. I'm even happier we won after that BS ticky tack offensive foul on Allen towards the end of the game. Seriously, get outta here with that garbage. Yes, by the exact letter of the law that's a foul. But by the exact letter of the law 98% of all players palm the ball when they are dribbling. No one calls that.
But enough ranting, fantastic win. You're playing a very good team on the road and its your 4th game in a week and you win? That's a difficult task and we pulled it off. That says a lot about our team and what they can be capable of
I'm really glad that we're able to take care of business tonight when we needed to. The difference between this team and the one this time last year is astounding. These kids have really grown into a hell of a group.
Looks like word went out the Big Ten that they were up against the wall. All three Big 10 teams came out firing in the second round of games. Indiana with an early double digit lead
I'm rooting, unapologetically, for Ohio State.
I just love the fact that we either now or very soon will need FAM! threads for hoops and not just football.
FAMMMM
Can't wait to see LOLUVA lose to OSU.
via GIPHY
FAM! Left work down 10, came home to see us win. FAM!
That was one tough W. On the road, awful officiating, Hill fouling out and LeDay nearly fouling out, yet finding a way to win by guys like Allen and Bibbs stepping up when called upon. Buzz truly has made Virginia Tech basketball so much fun.
That charge call on Med early on when he hit it for an and one was one of the worst calls I have seen in my life. It's what we refer to as "weight room."
It's been a good week or so.
I just back to the hotel from a work dinner and saw the score for the first time since checking in when we were way down. Trying to watch replay on ESPN on laptop, but damn thing won't let me log in with TWC- screen just freezes. Guess I will have to watch from DVR when I get home Friday night. Trying to decide if I should read all the comments here first or wait until after watching. If you see a bump Friday night you'll know why.
Wow! Just got done watching (had to DVR it)... The boys sure didn't have their A-game tonight, but they certainly were grinding till the end. Definitely lots of room for improvement in many areas, but they are still fun to watch!
I'm sitting at the airport drinking a beer-s, headed to Orlando, and just re-watched the last 25 minutes of the VT vs Michigan game. My thoughts are:
-I'm living living the dream (VT Football in ACC Championship, VT Mens Soccer in E8, VT Men's Bball awesome comeback win, VT Women's Bball undefeated)
-I like Michigan's sports bra like uniforms.
-Seth Allen is my dude. He catches a lot of heat on here with his turnovers and shot selection but that's the kind of player he is. You need him to be confident. He's our best player for creating his own shot and can create problems for the defense that lead to easy baskets. I love a player that can inject a spark into an offense.
-Our uniforms our shit, fit wise. We have players rolling up their shorts to make them a good looking length (just barely above the knee).
-This team treated this game like professionals. They didn't get scared when they were down late, just kept on playing and played smart. When they were up 1 late, they had good footwork on defense so that Michigan had to shoot a jumper to take the lead and we didn't allow them to get in the paint where they could draw a foul.
I have more thoughts, but the plane is boarding. See yall in Orlando, FAM!
