I was there...it was rough leaving the stadium with all of their fans booing us.
I feel the same way, but from the ridiculous behavior of Clemson fans at the regular season matchup on Thursday night. Singing and smoking cigars....at halftime. The only game I felt like fighting my way out of. Thump the tiggers.
Dang it. Kirk Herbstreit is calling the game. Hokies haven't won, like the last 4-5 games he's called. And then when the game gets out of hand he goes full on smarm.
Hokies are just going to have to break the curse tonight.
I'd say it's more a reflection of our record in "big games" than anything about Herbie. He calls big games, and we haven't exactly set the world on fire in "big" games. The last truly big game we won was 2014 OSU -- and Herbie didn't call that game (if I remember correctly).

If we play like we did against GT and they play like they have the past 2 games: this game will get out of hand quick
If we play like we did against Virginia and they play like they did against NCSt: this game will get out of hand quick

This game really shows the amount of work we still have to do. Fuente has done amazing this year, but the talent level has really dropped off the past five years and it shows this game. Still a lot of rebuilding to do.

I was interested to see who would win 3rd downs when Clemson has the ball, but it's not close.
EDIT: We've had like 3 PI's on 3rd down which apparently don't count in the conversion rate. Stats say Clemson is 3 for 3, but once the penalties are factored in, it's more like 7 for 7.

Basketball has the best of both worlds. 31 spots for conference champions and the rest based on the eye test. No top team that fails to win their conference gets left out and seeding is not necessarily affected by whether you won your conference either.
This why an 8 team playoff makes more sense. Have a little allowance for the eye test and let conference championship rules dictate the rest.

If you win your conference, you didn't just get one upset.
The four team playoff still leaves too much power in rankings, which are pretty fallible and subjective. It's even MORE of a chance that you get one lucky break and make it to the finals.
With eight teams, you're going to have to play to make it to the end.
Of course you can. If GT had won in 2012 then they definitely wouldn't deserve to get a playoff spot. FSU in 2005 wouldn't deserve it. UCLA in 2011 (I think) wouldn't deserve it. I know some of them didn't win, but if an upset occurs then that doesn't automatically make them a top 8 team.
I'd rather an undeserving team get into the eight-team playoffs than an undeserving team get one or two lucky breaks and win the national championship, over the conference champions and undefeated teams who didn't get in.

To be honest, it depends. I watched the game by myself this evening. When I'm around others, less gunshot reactions. The team's record for win I watch live 2-1 (both Ws coming against LOLUVA). Even in Beamer's last reg season game, I felt calm and confident in our team to deliver.
Two great throws by Watson down the field and a beautifully executed throw off the option on that drive... When superior athletes execute, there isn't much you can do about it.

We are doing good for our level of talent against this team, thing is they are bigger, stronger, and overall more athletic, but as far as heart and effort go I am happy. New coach, new system, exceeded expectations and made ACCCG, and I am surprised we have put up 28 points. We just need better recruits and more depth I feel like. It is just ridiculous to think that Alabama will do to them what they have done to us if they go to the NC. PI's are the only thing I haven't liked and how Evans at some times has looked like he has had no time, but against a D-line like this I expected that and much worse. And Rodgers just made a NASTY CATCH!!!

Physics (a little bigger, a little stronger) was just enough of a margin tonight. The kids fought their heart out. If you want perfect execution in a championship game against a better team, you have unreasonable expectations.

Very happy with our team. They never quit, they can return home heads held high. The early officiating was getting me irritated as they were calling ticky tacky interference on us and letting Clemson mug our receivers but the officiating got better in the second half.

There will be lots of talk about McMillian "missing a block." When you watch again, you will see that Clemson ran an eye-candy blitz. They made sure McMillian could see Boulware off the right side. It got him a step out of his lane. Joseph delayed and slipped behind him. When Foster schemes that up against an opponent, it is "GREAT SCHEME." When our kid gets fooled by great design in a huge pressure spot, he "whiffed on the block." I detest that double standard. That is a tremendous defensive squad with a really complex scheme. Venables won with his blitz. Bud executed his blitz perfectly on the Shegog play, and Watson/Kain made the play. That was the margin. Clemson was better. Clemson also will be losing Watson, Gallman, Tankersley, Williams, and more. There is a huge opportunity here for VT to be the new top dog if they can get a bit bigger, stronger, and faster.

Two guys hit Evans simultaneously from two different angles. If TMac did get a piece of Joseph, Evans still had to release it at the same time.
Because, when TMac realized he had messed up, he tried to go back to Joseph and Boulware came free too. Throw may have been more accurate without the inside pressure. Again, margins are so small... especially tonight. I would have loved to see the RPO that went to Phillips for the big first on the last scoring drive on 3rd down.
I am pretty down in the dumps. Not for me, the fan. I hate it for those kids, especially the seniors who went through so much adversity and were that close to a potential championship.

I think most of us see the potential here.
Let's not jump the shark though. There is a good chance we lose Ford and Hodges, along with half our offensive line and more than half our defensive line. We have a good deal of talent coming back but next year could actually be more difficult for our offense than this season was. Not trying to be Debbie downer but Clemson, FSU and Louisville won't be push overs next year considering they had top recruiting classes most of the last four years.
Only one of those teams we play next year in Regular season is Clemson. Who want's to bet Dabo is already dreading that game?
I hear ya, and I realize we'll lose a lot. But I do think our recruiting is going to pick up significantly. I also think we are looking at more than just next year regarding top dog. In regular season, we have Clemson next year (with a new QB, most likely), FSU in 2018, and none of the Atlantic division top 3 in 2019. So, next year is an opportunity, and 2019 is a really good opportunity to be strong. I think Josh Jackson will turn out to be a really good QB, and 2019 would be his second year as a starter.
Part of me thinks Ford stays. OL will be a worry.

Not as concerned about DT but more so the edge rush ends. Guess my question there is who is behind them and how do they compare to what Settle and Walker bring now. Replacing Ekanem and Mihota will be tougher. I honestly think our LBs and secondary may actually be stronger, especially if Stroman is healthy and continues to develop. I may be the only one that feels this way, but I hope Facyson goes pro. I think our secondary would be stronger without him.

Mental lapse on Mihota, still of the two Ekanem had the killer instinct, Mihota seems to be strong with lateral movement along the line but doesn't bring a big punch in terms of pressure on the QB. Hopefully we find someone able to move the QB to pair up with Mihota next year

Hill will bring everything Ekanam has and more.

Walker and Settle should have played more early. Got most of the stops with them playing. Think should have kept Walker as starter and Baron is much more productive when playing along side Walker.
Williams was terrific vs UVA and was fantastic early in the year when nobody was running on them. He deserved the start.
I took Sunday off (sick day.) I will watch the film tomorrow. However, the eye test told me that Clemson had the DE's and OLBs reading and reacting instead of getting down hill. That let Clemson get the edge (they ran wide early a bunch- way more than they had been in the last couple of games) and the safeties and corners seemed to run up and then wait on Watson to run into them rather than run through him. They respected him just a bit too much early.
This game reminded me a lot of the 2010 ACCCG, but with VT playing the role of the young team with the bright future and up-and-coming head coach. I'm definitely happy with the way this team played.
I'm so proud of this team. I know these young men are heart broken but damn it, They are FAM and I love em'. "I'm drunk, it happens 1 or 2 times every 5 years". I love this site and all you guys. A good game. Hokies made it respectable. In my view the game was lost on offense. It is almost impossible to stop the Clemson offense. But our D did a reasonably good job -- with the exception of those four PI's in the first half. In the 3rd quarter our D made a pick. First and 10 on the Clemson 45. And we squandered it.
The Clemson offense was simply more productive. The results speak for itself
I'd be willing to bet a case of beer to whomever that over 50% of our 3rd down plays within the 10 yard line in the redzone end up being Evans run plays. It worked a few times and it didn't work others so idk where I'm even going with this.
It worked a few time in the first 6 games of the season, after that everybody knew it was coming.
