VT moves up (!!!) to #18 in the AP Poll

Good to see one poll get it right!

Let's hope the committee does the same. Of course, in the grand scheme of things this doesn't really matter, but that little number next to our name always feels nice.

inb4 we're unranked in the coach's poll.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Lol, i said this last night.

This may be posted elsewhere, but Arkansas (who VT is facing in the Belk Bowl) didn't even score Virginia Tech in their coaches poll.

Should make for some good locker room motivational talk.

They've moved up Utah for losing, TWICE, I can't imagine we don't get the same treatment for taking Clemson to the wire, especially when Clemson didn't get all turnover happy.

Thankful it's not the dreaded #17.

"Exit light..."

is it still dreaded? I haven't been following since VT's loss to Syracuse.

🦃 🦃 🦃

Someone broke the curse, I believe, but it was like 6-7 straight weeks of #17 losing.

"Exit light..."

If only VT was ranked 16 that week, the season would've been different. Could've been enough to make the Orange Bowl.

🦃 🦃 🦃

When you lose to the #3 team in the country by one score, there should be no doubt that Virginia Tech is a top 10 team.

Ehhhh I wouldn't say Pitt is a Top 10 team for beating Clemson, but we're easily Top 15.

I remember VT clearly beat Pitt at their own stadium. VT is a top ten team.

I also remember VT losing to Syracuse.

A 9-4 team is not top 10. Sorry.

Top 15 maybe, Top 10, nope.

Two teams in the Top 10 are 9-3 and didn't win their divisions. The record is not a criteria here.

2026 Season Challenge: TBD
Previous Challenges: Star Wars (2019), Marvel (2020), Batman (2021), Wrasslin' (2022)

The record is a criterion, as well as where they placed last week. It's all subjective, but I'm pretty happy about this season, and I'm fine with the ranking, AND the bowl.

You want a premium bowl, don't lose to Syracuse and Georgia Tech.

Slow down Jeff Gordon... this team got shredded by Syracuse in a game we were favored by 22. Got killed in the Battle at Bristol by a team that finished the season 8-4. And got ran all over by a team that was playing its backup QB and RB.

This team is light years ahead of where it was last year. The 2016 football team would beat the 2015 football team 35-0. But we are appropriately ranked at 18.

Huh, so NC State be top 5 for getting to OT right?

Pitt and NC State were in those games because Clemson got the turnover bug and Watson wasn't playing at a high level. They didn't do that against us and Watson has been on fire since their loss. I'm not saying we should be top 10, we shouldn't. But Clemson played pretty great last night and we took them to the wire. That's a big difference from those other two games.

"...When we step on that field, they bleed like we bleed and we're gonna show the world."
-Corey Marshall

Watson played pretty well in both those games actually. Threw for almost 400 against NC State, threw for 580 yards against Pitt. 4 INTs, but I can't blame him when he threw 120+ passes between those two games

edit because math is hard sometimes

"I thought the kid right there you're talking to right there played his nuts off."

Interceptions can turn a W into an L.

Like they have for VT as well.

Well yeah, but he threw 3 in the Pitt game which is the same one he threw 70 passes in. I'd fault the gameplan more than the QB. Only one in the NC State one, just happened to be in the redzone.

"I thought the kid right there you're talking to right there played his nuts off."

He threw two in the redzone/scoring position against Pitt. One was intercepted in the endzone, another in the 4th quarter was intercepted underneath just short of the endzone when he tried to force a pass that wasn't open.

Still behind two 9-3 ACC teams that never earned the right to play for the conference title...

They're arguably in a harder division.

This shit made me laugh hysterically for the better half of 2 minutes.

It is a natural gift I posess to create friction in sensitive situations.

They're comparable. The ACC Atlantic is very top-heavy, while the Coastal has more parity.

Also,

In the Atlantic, they have a 12-1 team, two 9-3, three 6-6, and 1 at 4-8.

In the Coastal, they have a 9-4 team, 4 teams at 8-4, 1 at 4-8, and 1 at 2-10.

So there are 5 Coastal teams that could fit between the #3 and #4 teams in the Atlantic.

Well yea it's all their quality wins /s

HOW SWAY

Even though Florida did indeed get housed, any team that comes within 21 of Bama past halftime gets my respect. It was 33-16 at one point in the 3rd quarter.

"It might be dark outside, but it's LeDay in here." - Jay Bilas

Was that when Bama had their 3rd strings in? UF poked the bear with that early TD and got the claws.

Fair enough but Bama's 3rd stringers are probably better than half the defenses in the Big 12.

VB born, class of '14

It's a good foundation for next year.

As mentioned in the bowl thread, if we hadn't been so off the radar before the start of the season we probably are in the discussion right now for the Orange Bowl.

Don't lose to GT and you could say the same thing.....

If you go back to that game day thread, I actually literally said that thing

HOKIES should be above both FSU and Louisville- neither played for acc champ.

They still ranked 12 and 13?

You put those words together, those are my favorite words, Popeyes and bahama

#10?! and #15 respectively

This is great, well deserved.

Clemson moved up to #2 in the CFP ranking, which should be recognition that they won a hard-fought game against a good team. VT might actually move up, as well.

"Exit light..."

Or simply because OSU didn't play...

Because they didn't earn the right to play, Clemson did and won and deserved to be ranked higher. But the only thing that really matters is that Clemson gets to wear their home unis.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Idk where to put this (and he could be referring to the NFL game he is currently watching) but ???

My guess is that he's referring to the CFP rankings.

If he's not and VT moved up in the CFP rankings, good.

How long are they gonna take to announce the rest of the rankings?

In Sam Rogers we trust.

They said the rest of the NY6 would be announced at 2:30 PM, so it looks like we're going to get another 90 minutes(!) of talking about the top 4, then the rest.

"Exit light..."

THIS is exactly why ESPN is losing subscribers. Been talking about the exact same shit for 90 mins.

ESPN doesn't decide when these get released.

ESPN has the exclusive rights to CFP announcements. The fact that they led off with the fact that they didn't have the CFP ranking, then basically mocked themselves and the whole process that "it takes a while to get the graphics ready," then drone on and on about the same crap for two hours before releasing the rest (which I have a hard time believing aren't actually set when the top 6 are known) is just ridiculous. The show is only on my TV because there's nothing else I care about watching on a Sunday afternoon.

"Exit light..."

Very true, but they do control what they talk about. Same five dudes have been debating the same thing all afternoon. Although not sure what else they would really discuss, but it's still boring at this point.

And now they're filling time talking about how bad Florida is.

"Exit light..."

They're working around the nfl games. Waiting till halftime.

Exactly right. Start the show an hour before NFL games kickoff, stall and bs for another hour and a half until halftime.

ESPN, the worldwide leader in $port$.

At least it makes sense. I couldn't figure out why they would be dicking around for so long.

"Exit light..."

I'm fully assuming that we will get the 25 ranking just because 25 is magic.

uva sucks

VT moves up to #22 in final CFP standings.

"Exit light..."

........and UT is at 21.

uva sucks

I know UT fans that don't agree with that. Lol it's ludicrous.

"Tennessee must have had a great week of practice" - I didn't catch who said that, but it had me busting out laughing.

"Exit light..."

Herbstreit argues for Florida State being ranked higher than Louisville because they finished strong.

We finished strong and UTjr lost to Vanderbilt. hmmm.

Conference championships matter (unless you're Penn State)...so I guess "champions of life" is good for at least a spot or two in the rankings...

Look at that, i was wrong

If you told me before the season started we would end the season with 10 wins, a division championship and be ranked, I would have taken it.

This season was a big stepping stone for next year. Another spring ball under everyone's belt and I fully expect to be going balls out next year, even though we're (probably) losing three of our biggest weapons on offense and some great guys on defense.

We're back to the Virginia Tech standard that Beamer set for us: 10 wins, costal championships, a UVA beatdown and begrudgingly respect nationally. Can't wait for next year.

I wanna win the bowl too, but we can't count it yet.

The fact that Utah, Tennessee, Florida, LSU, and even Auburn and Louisville are ranked ahead of us is comical and just shows that media attention matters. Also that conference championships matter but certainly not division championships. Ridiculous

The fact that Utah, Tennessee, Florida, LSU, and even Auburn and Louisville are ranked ahead of us is comical

You can really argue any order for 14-23. Of teams 14-23, VT and Utah and the only teams with a loss to a sub .500 team (Syracuse and Oregon, respectively). Our best game of the season is a win over a mediocre UNC or a one score loss to Clemson. Tennessee beat us head to head, with similar record and similar opponents. Putting them one spot above us is fair. None of these 7 teams have done anything to separate themselves.

Also that conference championships matter but certainly not division championships.

Division championships don't matter.

I guess when we look back at the end of this year, we will say "we finished ranked ____" and that will reference the AP ranking.

Isn't this always true, since CFB playoff committee doesn't rank after the bowl games?

🦃 🦃 🦃

This is true. But a larger point is that VT has consistently reported its own rank on hokiesports.com as whatever the AP poll says. It appears that is true at the moment, as our schedule lists us as being #18 for the bowl game.

"Exit light..."

I think if we beat Arkansas than a ranking in the mid to late teens sounds about right.

Total Offense: 42
Total Defense: 19

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

The drop in defense isn't surprising. We had depth issues at DE, three DL starters get injured (Mihota looks like he dislocated both shoulders multiple times this season and stayed in the game), very little depth at DB, poor depth at LB.

Much of Bud's defense this year morphed into bend but don't break (I might be talking out of my ass here), at least it felt like it. Plus we played high octane offenses this year as well.

I wonder what would this season would have been like if Fuller came back for his senior year?

He's giving you yards/game, for which VT has had the following rankings the last four year:

Defense:
2016: 19ypg (30ppg)
2015: 34 (47)
2014: 17 (17)
2013: 4 (11)

Offense:
2016: 42ypg (34ppg)
2015: 74 (53)
2014: 99 (94)
2013: 103 (101)

Wow. 2013 offense really laid an egg that year.

Yeah, with LT returning. What a crazy year, after losing to Bama, we won 6 in a row....then lost what was a pivotal game in the programs history: 13-10 to Duke at home. Before that game, we didn't lose those types. Duke was 0-11 on 3rd downs, had 4 TO's, 198 yards total offense and was out TOP'd 39/21.

Followed that up with a loss at BC then a huge win over a ranked Miami team in Coral Gables...then a bad loss in OT to UMD, then a ho-hum 16-6 I-Don't-Even-Remember-That-Game win over UVA and a frustrating thrashing to UCLA in El Juarez, TX.

That year set the program back.

We are talking about being ranked in the final poll of the year! I'm not mad at it! Thank you Whit and CJF!

I'm pretty happy with the ranking, as well as the Clemson results.

Would have been better to win, but this has been a great first season for Fuente.
