Last night was a pretty interesting night in regards to Virginia Tech Football recruiting. Lots of recruits were active on Twitter last night and it certainly caught my attention. I just wanted to post and ask about everyone's thoughts.
To start:
Darnell Jefferies out of Covington, Georgia picked up an offer from the Hokies. Jefferies is a member of the class of 2018, and his HUDL has him listed at 6'4", 265 LBS (WOW). His tape is pretty promising as well, so I wouldn't mind this potential pickup

Next up:
Payton Wilson out of Hillsborough, North Carolina also picked up an offer from the Hokies. Wilson, like Jefferies is also a member of the class of 2018, and his HUDL has him listed at 6'4", 220 LBS. He is a multi-positional athlete playing OLB and WR. His height gives him a huge advantage, and if you check out his HUDL his highlights are promising.

BIG NEWS:
Per Ryan Bartow, a nationally known college football recruiting insider announced the de-commitment of the Gaddy brothers from the University of Tennessee. There was a lot of backlash from the Tennessee faithful claiming that they didn't have the grades and whatnot.
Breyon Gaddy is a 4-star defensive tackle listed at 6'4", 335 LBS, and is out of Bishop Sullivan Catholic in Virginia Beach.
Brandon Gaddy is a 3-star defensive tackle listed at 6'5", 289 LBS and is also out of Bishop Sullivan Catholic.
Below I have included both of their 247 profiles so you can review their offers and whatnot. Both have offers from major power five schools. The brothers are also both in the class of 2017. This had me thinking... maybe this de-commitment could mean something for the Hokies. Tayvion Land also attends Bishop Sullivan is a hard commit to the Hokies (class of 2019). Maybe he could influence the brothers?? ALSO, maybe this could cause an Eric Crosby de-commitment from Tennessee as well. Crosby committed to Tennessee back in April over the Hokies. He is a 4-star DT from the 757.

Dazz Newsome, a University of Maryland commit, received an offer from the Hokies last night. It was his 11th offer, and his HUDL has him listed at 5'10", 170 LBS. He is a multi-positional athlete, playing WR and CB. Like the others, his HUDL is pretty nice, and from what I've heard, he is a legacy here at VT. He even got a little love from Devon Hunter *girl scream.* I've included his HUDL below for your review.

The last things that caught my attention were tweets sent out by Armani Chatman, a WR and CB out of Bayside High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He is listed at 6'0", 180 LBS. He is a member of the class of 2018, and he was exclaiming that #STATEMENT17 was going to "blow up" and "remember his words." I have included the tweet below. He was also very active in saying that VT needs to make the move on the Gaddy brothers. I have also included the tweet below. His HUDL is also below.

In other news, we are also awaiting the commitment of Benjamin St-Juste out of MONTREAL?! His 247 profile has him listed at 6'3", 188 LBS, and is a 4-star cornerback. To my knowledge already and going through his previous tweets, he is already "committed" to Michigan, but he is making his "final decision" between the Hokies and the Wolverines. Something in my gut is telling me he's going to flip to the Hokies, but you never know. Hokies on Twitter have been showing him stupid amounts of support so we can only hope.

Lots of great info here, I actually noticed the noise on twitter last night as well, and that Armani Chatman tweet was particularly interesting.
We have a monthly recruiting thread that all of this could have been posted in. That said, it is okay to make individual threads about offers going out and commitments so I think you are all good here. Thank you for taking your time to put this together!
Only constructive criticism is that for tweets, if you're not using your phone, it's pretty easy to embed the tweets, and some people prefer that presentation. That said, links are fine as well and can help keep things concise. I don't have an opinion either way.
Good stuff. No criticism. I think all TKPers enjoy tracking the movement of potential recruits. And as someone who doesn't use Twitter, this is a nice one stop shop. Nice first post.

The past five years have taught me one thing: All of this stuff is just smoke and mirrors. I don't get excited about a recruit until the kid is actually on campus on the first day of camp.

Reading between the lines on the Gaddy bros:
- their mom moved them to Bishop and said it was that HS that has kept them out of a gang;
- the decommitted on SAT score day;
- maybe moms wants them closer to home in a more stable environ and it was the positive SAT scores that led to VT re-engaging?
Don't want to rain on a parade...but Gaddy boys cannot get in to VT. Or UT for that matter. They call it a decommit but UT was not taking them. Apparently their grades were so bad that they would not have even been able to play for a VHSL school this year. Thus the transfer to BS and thus Momma Gaddy saying BS saved them from jail...
Don't be surprised to see Crosby "decommit" next. Greatly overrated.
Dazz is a stud. VT did in fact wait on his SAT score. He should be a Hokie...That is what Chatman was tweeting about ....imo....

Chatman knows Dazz and Devon Hunter and Hunter and Dazz are friends. I think Chatman was referring to both Dazz and Devon.
VT is (for most majors) a more difficult school to get into than Tennessee. I hate speculating on a players' (recruits') academics, but if his grades are keeping him out of UT, I wouldn't be hopeful that he gets into VT.
Optimistic thinking, but perhaps the scores were too low for VT, but high enough for UT. Now that they're high enough for VT, the boys have decommitted from UT. /s

Both brothers have been favoriting and retweeting tweets sent to them from HokieNation, so you never know... I heard neither of them have the grades to get into VT though.

This is why the game against Clemson is so important. We need to prove that we can play with the big boys on the big stage. A hard fought, close game will go a long way. Win or lose....
Meh... If you are a recruit and you can't see the potential of the program right now based on what we just did in conference play, I don't know what to say. First year head coach wins coach of the year, our offense plays at a higher level than we did at any point the last 15 years, and our defense regained it's form. We have been the class of the Coastal since it was created and now it's ours again.
What more could you realistically ask for this year? If you aren't sold now, you're looking for reasons to doubt us.
I wouldn't say this offense is better than 2010 just yet, but to each his own. Even if numbers were a tad better, we had fewer handcuffs that year in the passing game, and a much, much more effective ground game.
2010 was good in spite of itself. Immense talent and playmakers that could survive poor decisions from the booth. Not saying we aren't talented this year (Cam, Buck, Izzy, Jerod, Sam) but I still feel like we achieved much more with less. Record books indicate that as well.
I tend to think it's a mistake to ascribe so much significance in recruiting to a single game (only caveat might be if it's a national championship or playoff).

I believe BSJ is dropping his announcement video sometime tonight. Honestly, I think the quick turnaround off the VT visit to the announcement isn't great for the good guys, especially since it's a video which takes time to make.

I watched my high school aged cousin make a video at Thanksgiving while eating dinner around the table. It was 5 minutes long. He used some footage he had on his phone and a little he filmed right there at the table.
What's interesting is that the standard for "good with tech" has become knowing how to use apps on your iphone.

Man, Ronyell had some swagger. I'll never forget when he laid into Michael Vick on a late hit out of bounds during the 1999 Spring Game. He certainly got a chewing from the coaching staff for that.
That's swagger? That's about a dumb*ss a move as you can make in practice. And not to mention how many dumb*ss things he did that cost us actual games. Can anyone name a good Ronyell Whitaker moment? The INT against Miami in '02 when he thought no one was around and started showing off and got tackled from behind? I can remember about two games he cost us on personal fouls.

Players make mistakes, but he played hard and that's pretty much all I ask.

No not at all. Best part is, as good as 17 could be; 18 is starting to shape up as potential the best class tech has ever had. Things are trending way up and #thisishome campaign has been very effective
Couple of flips I'm hoping for, but seem like long shots. 18 is looking good and in my mind is really Fuente and co's first real class because it's the first one they have been able to develop significant relationships with.
Very hopeful for at least a Rivers visit; but still believe he is a long shot. Saw his entire family sporting PSU gear when I was home for Thanksgiving.

This list is based on remaining targets that are either a) highly rated recruits b) possibly interested in VT (according to 247sports/rivals/TKP) or c) address position needs not already addressed in this year's class. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on how the rest of our class will shape up or if there are any other top recruits we have a shot at this year. Here we go:

A couple more thoughts, I am new this year to actually paying attention to recruiting sites (I am hooked on CJF and often dream about what he could do with top talent) so I have no clue how reliable these sites are in either ratings or commitment projections. Also, it was a little calming to look back at past classes and remember a couple things; a) top recruits don't always work out, though that is all the more reason to get as many as you can, b) some of our favorite/best players weren't highly rated...I love me some Baron, Rogers, Stroman, etc. Half of the fun is seeing what no one else did and developing great players. Lastly, I thought about making this it's own thread but wasn't sure about the guidelines of multiple recruiting conversations going on at once. Hope this comment isn't too much.

That's a good list to look at. But I'll add to Newsome that he's very, very highly thought of. Most people believe he is criminally underrated. I expect his rating to go up when the recruiting sites update their numbers which they do every once in a while. Go to his twitter and watch some of his film and you'll see what people are talking about. Dude is explosive.

Hope all our targets saw that game last night. The entire world was against us and we almost pulled it off. With a great class or two we will be the power team in this conference in short order.
What does that mean the entire world was against us? That's a bit hyperbolic. If anything there were a lot of schools with playoff hopes rooting for us or just wanting chaos.

Said it in the other threads, but the message was sent early by the conference that Clemson would be winning the game. There were some unbelievably poor calls that allowed Clemson to continue stalled drives that led to scores to pass their lead. And we still almost pulled it off.

His OV to UF sounds like it was planned for January regardless of his announcement Dec 24th as all schools involved thought that date was not relevant. Turns out that was the case.
Everyone needs to remember that this is a kid whose worked his ass off and looks like he wants to enjoy the process. Yes it doesn't help that the past staff had a rough time closing on top targets so we're all a little worried but JF and Bud will get it all figured out.
Pro's and Con's for each school so why not take an OV and hear each coach out.
IMO I'm more worried about what UF can sell over Auburn looking at it numbers wise. UF probably has 2 db's going rounds 1-3 in Tabor and Wilson. They will be able to sell PT and NFL Draft status big time.

It's becoming more and more common for the big time recruits to do this. Settle did it at the Under Armour All American Game, I recall. It's the easiest way for these guys to announce on national TV other than NSD.
Apparently he was one of the first to reach out to the Hokies staff after the Clemson loss.

Before I joined here, I just watched the National signing day on Hokiesports, and read all about our new recruits. I was happy for all the new players coming to Tech to get an education and to play football.
Then I started reading here, and getting excited about potential recruits. That leads to disappointment. I just need to stop checking these recruiting threads and go back to what I used to.
It's definitely something that can be very poisonous. Sucks for kids that aren't blue-chippers too. Those are the kids who are really talented athletes that get cut down by fanbases like ours with all the comments about how we will never win with these kids and they aren't championship caliber and what not. Don't think they don't see that stuff either, if you're a 3-star kid with 5-20 offers from various schools, don't think they don't google themselves, or see their direct mentions on twitter.

As MPHOKIE alludes to below, his high school coach is Loren Johnson who played for Beamer at VT. That being the case, I'm not so sure it's a school to school relationship problem.

Now, times have changed and it has been several decades, but my high school football team had an offensive guard that went about 135 soaking wet. The team was very competitive statewide, and his nickname was "Alley Cat" (name was Allen). Mean as a snake and extremely effective on the line, he was just one of those dudes you didn't mess with, on or off the field. As the old saying goes, it's the size of the fight in the dog.

Yep, lowest level of Single A ball. This coach has always played a DT that was super quick and he's almost always leads the district in sacks. He often plays a guy DT size at MLB, even had a kid who play D1 ball playing MLB a few years back.
My high school nose tackle was 170 lbs..... I laughed the first time I saw him line up, then I stopped laughing when I watched him literally scoop a 270 lb offensive lineman right over his head and hit the QB for a strip sack before the QB had even looked back at the line of scrimmage. We were state runners up that year and our defensive line had alot to do with it.

I disagree. IMO, as a true Jr, he's 1-3 years less physically mature than most of his competition. Yes, his hands, body control and speed won't improve much. But 20 yr old receivers can always improve upon their route running. And he can definitely put on another 10lbs of muscle mass and work on his biggest flaws - blocking and YAC.
But it doesn't matter what either of us thinks. What matters is whether he thinks staying another year will improve his draft stock enough to offset the injury risk and make it financially worthwhile - and most importantly whether the real draft scouts (not the 99% who have a website and no credentials) agree.

I don't remember all the details, but it went along these lines. His family was super high on VT, and a lot of people close to him expected him to commit to the good guys. His family visited VT with him, but he went to FSU alone. After that visit and/or some last-minute in-home by Fisher, Sweat decided on FSU. On decision day, he revealed his choice to his mom, who was surprised. She thought he was coming to VT.
Whether or not all of that is true, I don't know. But that's what I pieced together from various rumors and a few quotes from the family in reporters' articles.

On facebook the hokies 247 page posted about him committing and already some fans making judgmental comments about him, purely embarrassing. I am sure it is the same fans wondering why we have kids de-commit and do not get 5 stars. I am one of the fans who did not attend VT but my uncle played and coached with Beamer there and my wife went there from 01-04 she graduated a semester early, I always grew up a Hokie fan but was not into school and went to work at a local government shipyard. Not all fans who didn't go to VT are bad but what I saw on facebook is pretty low regardless if they are VT alumni or not.

Brad Johnson, high 3-star DE on 247 composite, is currently on an official visit to VT and Evan Watkins just put a crystal ball to the Hokies.
HokieFireman, you mentioned a Carolina all-star game. Johnson, among other current Hokie commits and targets will be playing in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas next Saturday, the 17th, at Wofford College. That would be one to watch.
Again, too good of an offer list for a 3*. South Carolina, UT, ND, Wisky, Mich St, aTm. Maybe all of them aren't still on him, but all seemed to want him earlier in the year.
Those schools are all loaded with 3*. They all have more 3* than 4* except ND.
His senior film is legit.....
The 4 out of the last 5 predictions made during the season for Johnson have been for Hokies. Those 4 are the last 4 predictions - and have come in the last 3 weeks or so. That's interesting.
Most of the SCar predictions are from the winter/spring time frame. You can basically discount those predictions.

Anybody know if Tech is paying attention to Cole Beck from Blacksburg. He is absolutely destroying the competition and a big part of why Blacksburg is playing in the state playoffs?
I know he's been on a couple visits.
For anyone who is curious, Blacksburg has made it to the state championship as a 10 seed. Beck has 1161 yards and 15 touchdowns. In just the postseason.

I did a triple take when I read that Blacksburg beat Phoebus.
He's class of 2018, so I would expect to see his recruiting blow up next year. I'm sure the coaches are well aware of what he's doing, and are keeping an eye on it. The playoff run certainly is impressive, and if he keeps it up next year, you can be sure he'll get an offer.

Dalton Keene is enrolling in January per 247 sports, looks like we won't have to worry about Michigan after all. Keene and Farley I really believe will both be studs as will Capehart. I am really excited about all of the weapons this class will add to the roster. Will Savoy and Pimpleton both be WR's? Them 2 along with Stroman and Murphy will be some serious speed!
I let out a cheer when I saw Keene is enrolling early. I was nervous ever since Michigan came in the picture. As for Pimpleton, I think coaches are probably showing him CJ Carroll's role. Return man + slot WR. He's even shorter than CJ (5'7").
I'm not from VA, but not being voted 1st team for one of the top recruits in the country is odd.
No idea what the deal is there. But a thing to keep in mind is top prospect does not always mean best high school player, which is what those awards should be about. Could be another kid had a great season but isn't big enough/fast enough to get recruited?

That's actually slightly relieving. I was more concerned that it was his mom in the pic with Bama stuff on. Either way it doesn't really matter that much as I'm still not holding out too much hope on Matthews.
