So I've been thinking of this thread since right after the bye week, because I don't know what to do when the Hokies aren't playing. So I was curious who are your top three teams to cheer for when techs not playing and who are your three most hated teams, like we can probably guess Hokiegirl is going to put Tennessee in the most hated category.
My top 3 are:
Georgia
Clemson
Colorado
My most hated are:
Duke
Tennessee
Michigan
Edit: so everyone seems to hate a lot of teams so just tell us everyone you hate

Everybody should check out GangStarr
YO LIST GARBAGE THO
BOI PLS U GARBAGE
U GON TALK TRASH BOY U BEST COME BACK IT UP BYE FELICIA
Like...all time?
Made this list super fast, I don't really care enough to get into it, I do strongly believe LW is the best though. If you really get into it it's pretty easy to include guys like Gambino and even (stay with me here) Bo Burnham on being extremely, extremely clever. Some people think the production and music aspect is super important, and they'd probably easily put Jay-Z and Kanye in there. Too much preference involved and different styles to ever put a list together that isn't wildly subjective.
Completely subjective list off of the top of my head:
Biggie
Tupac
GZA
Ghostface
Rakim
Honorable Mentions:
Black Thought
Eminem
Busta Rhymes
KRS-One
Hot Taek: Jay-Z is over-rated.
I'm kinda disappointed no one has mentioned Andre 3000, Ice Cube, or Qtip.
Not exactly top ten material, but I'm a big fan of Bun B, Eazy, ODB, Treach, and Melle Mel.
Moar hot taeks: Drake is doo doo.
Drake and Wayne are both doo doo bunnies
BOI listen to the Carter 3 and drought 3
And ransom by Drake.
I like Wayne's music but I just think most of his rap is lame, especially post-Carter II. Carter 3 had great music but the lyricism fell off a bit in my opinion. Yes I realize this is a mildly hot taek.
Agree to disagree on Carter 3, I love Carter II though. I've always thought his lyrics are what set him apart, hence why I love Drought 3, mixtape of other peoples music but his raps, unbelievable.
Yeah haven't heard many of his mixtapes but I know for awhile he was putting out one every few weeks or so which is impressive
leg for doo doo bunnies
Should have mentioned Andre for freaking sure.
Thank you. Any list without Ghostface is trash.
Bo Burnham
Completely lost me with that one...
What are your qualifications for being "ALL TIME" top 5?
Didn't even mention Lil Dicky. SMH.
Lil Dicky is great, he would be on a list with Childish and Bo in the sense that I view them as being more ridiculous and distant from traditional rap scene, but they are too clever and talented to ignore.
For me, it was a combination of influence (Tupac, Biggie) and guys who rap in a very cool, clever way with great flow. I made the list fast and can change it, also by putting people on that list I'm not endorsing all of the music they make, just how I view them strictly in terms of rapping. Bo Burnham is a genius, you can agree to disagree about his rapping, but he can write more clever stuff than any of these guys, and I think all these guys are great at what they do.
I have absolutely no idea about what and who any of you are talking about.
Get off my lawn.
Always a leg for Cole #coleworld
I like Jermaine, but he doesn't belong anywhere near a GOAT list. Yet.
Teams I like:
Washington
Michigan State
Wisconsin
Teams I particularly dislike:
Maryland
Penn State
UGA
Bonus (dislike): UVA (can never be said enough)
3 teams I cheer for...
1. mizzou
2. duke
3. okla st
3 teams I hate!
1. UM
2.UF
3. SEC everything!
But Mizzou is...
VThokies904 will be dead in cold, cold ground before they recognize the state university of Missourah in the SEC!
That's why his flag only has 49 stars.
Against:
Maryland
Rutgers
UNC
FOR:
Notre Dame
Why do I not support more than two teams?
I have to say, that trip to Notre Dame totally turned me around on them. I can't stand Kelly, but if they had a likable coach, I could find myself at least not actively rooting for their city to burn to the ground as before.
I grew up a ND fan, my dad and uncle are both alum, I was also [ ] that close to going to Notre Dame. Was accepted and everything just really fell in love with Tech. I totally get the hate on them but hey, I grew up a fan, I'll stay a fan. And that game was awesome.
Didn't list them, but most people on my mom's side of the family went to ND and so I don't hate ND at all as well. They catch the blue blood hate like all the others. It's weird how many people here in South Carolina hate ND with very little actual reason. They played in 2015, but they hated ND waaaay before that.
Teams I cheer for:
Whoever is playing Virginia
Whoever is playing West Virginia
Whoever is playing North Carolina
Teams I never cheer for:
Virginia
West Virginia
North Carolina
Virginia plays UNC. Who do you cheer for?
Alum07 and me on this question

This was my best case scenario when the Packers played the Steelers in the Super Bowl.
I was hoping that somehow it would end in a tie. (Or meteor annihilation, of course)
That's why you have Quantum Hate- Hate them both equally and more at the same time.
Still working out where Heisenberg and Schrodinger fit into this theory
Teams I hate: Fuck Pat Narduzzi.
Teams I cheer for: any with a chance to Fuck Pat Narduzzi.
Top non-VT 3 Beard roots for:
Iowa
Oregon
Texas Tech
Top I'd-Rather-Die's (I'm listing more than 3, deal with it):
WVU
Duke
Stanford (Duke West)
USCw
FSU
BYU
The entire SEC but especially Bama
Minnesota
Iowa State
Maryland
Oklahoma
Kansas
Pat Narduzzi
The beardless
It's nice to have a team in each conference to root for. Mine:
SEC: UGA
B10: Mich St (I also like Wisky)
P12: Oregon (I also like Stanford)
B12: Kansas State I guess? I really don't like teams who don't play defense, which is the entire conference.
Group of 5: Boise
I have a strong dislike for Tennessee, Florida, Penn State, Oklahoma and everyone in the ACC.
Teams I cheer for:
LSU (my girlfriend transferred to Tech from there)
Auburn (close family friends live there)
Michigan State
Teams I hate (besides WVU/UVA/ACC teams):
Alabama
ND
USC
Only 3? Oh well, here's more.
Michigan, Arkansas (I don't like Bret Bielema), Texas, Tennessee, Baylor, ECU
Top 3 I cheer for:
NC State (family ties)
Ohio State (family ties)
Kansas State (I really like Bill Snyder and think what he's done at KSU is similar to what Beamer did at VT)
Top 3 I hate (Not including UVA/WVU because those are given):
Miami
UNC
Michigan
For:
App State
Wisconsin
Stanford
Against:
LOLUVA
WVU
Catholics and Convicts
By Catholics and Convicts, do you mean Notre Dame and Miami?
Yes. I do not hate actual Catholics or convicts.
That's 4 teams then. This is absolute anarchy.
Doesn't count if I put it in three lines....right? Is that how that works?
That's how the Catholics got around some rules.
Catholics vs. Convicts: That was a great 30 for 30, although near the top, but did not surpass I Hate Christian Laettner and Rand U in my book.
I Hate Christian Laettner was fantastic. Glad to see that he has a sense of humor about his image.
But I still hate him.
Rand U is hands down my favorite as well, with Bad Boys as a close second.
Teams I cheer for:
1. Georgia, have family near Athens who are season ticket holders. Beautiful campus.
2. Texas A&M, they are the VT of the SEC.
3. ODU, I'm an alum.
Teams to cheer against other than UVA and the rest of our ACC hated teams:
1. USC west
2. Ohio State (their fans annoy me. The true fans are good ones, the rest seem bandwagonny)
3. Notre Dame
Teams I root for:
Navy
Teams I used to root for but have soured on (apologies to Hokiegirl):
Tennessee
Teams I will never in a million years root for and would rather be burned at the stake:
Alabama
Notre Dame (Join the conference or don't, this middle ground stuff is annoying)
UVA
Alabama
Arkansas
Baylor
Alabama
Can't decide if you didn't include Alabama enough or if you included Alabama the right number of times.
Would your mind change if ND joined the conference?
It would probably move them to a mild dislike. I've found a lot of their fans to be a pit pretentious and obnoxious, usually out of their nationwide not-affiliated-with-the-university-in-any-way fanbase that are ND fans because you can find ND gear anywhere (Important to note: this is also a very large contributing reason to my hatred of Alabama). No, not all of them are that way and I'm sure everyone on here that's a ND fan is a wonderful person.
Also, Rudy was offsides, the movie sucked, and in the real life game Rudy only got the sack because literally everyone in the stadium got involved in the sack.
While real life Rudy may have been offsides and a butthead to boot, the movie was a movie, for goodness sake, and in my opinion, it didn't suck. Don't give a hoot one way or the other for ND, hate their "above the crowd" attitude, but they're just doing what they can to keep the ground they gained over the decades so I understand it. Hopefully, as they fade into mediocrity and fall back to earth with the rest of us, they'll eventually lose their privilege, and I've seen Rudy enough not to want to watch it again, but I can't help it...I liked it.
Their past success is almost a quarter of a century old. I was one year old when they won their last major bowl game (1993 Cotton Bowl vs Texas A&M). Since then they've got a .595 winning percentage and average 7 or 8 wins a season and that's counting their now vacated wins as well.
Basically, they already are an average program and their fans haven't woken up yet.
The movie comments are totally serious and not meant to troll ND fans at all*
*This statement has not been evaluated by any agency and may or may not be truthful.
I mean...they did go undefeated like three years ago until they hit Alabama. That isn't really average in my book. No, they didn't win the MNC but they very much were the second best team in the country that year.
I'm going to put up their records for the 4 seasons before and after that undefeated season with bowl game and results.
2008: 7-6 (Hawai'i Bowl, W vs. Hawaii 49-21)
2009: 6-6
2010: 8-5 (Sun Bowl, W vs. Miami (FL) 33-17)
2011: 8-5 (Champs Sports Bowl, L vs FSU 18-14)
2012: 12-1* (BCS Champtionship, L vs. Alabama 42-14)
2013: 9-4* (Pinstripe Bowl, W vs. Rutgers 29-16)
2014: 8-5 (Music City Bowl, W vs. LSU 31-28)
2015: 10-3 (Fiesta Bowl, L vs. Ohio State 44-28)
2016: 4-8
Perhaps average is the wrong word, as is mediocre. Average would be in the 6-6 range every season. Most seasons, they're hovering between 6-8 wins with occasional double-digit seasons. That pattern holds up if we go further back into the early 2000's and late 90's. They've lost their lofty status as an elite program and have regressed towards the mean but every year they get pre-season hype and I just. don't. know. why.
I would greatly dispute that they were the second best team in the country. They stumbled their way to 12 wins, with only 2 of the teams on their schedule finishing the year better than 8-5 and 6 of their wins coming by single digits, including a triple-OT "thriller" against eventual 6-7 Pitt.
If they had lost any of their 4 games decided by either a field goal or overtime, I guarantee you they would have finished no better than #5 in the BCS standings. The MNCG beatdown to me was proof that they had no business playing in that game, and the voters responded by dropping them out of the top 2.
Tragically, they managed to win all of their games. Hence, went to MNC
I actually feel like the best two teams in the country that year played in the SEC championship. That Alabama/Georgia game was a great one. Aaron Murray, Malcolm Mitchell, Fr Todd Gurley, with a tough defense. They played Bama really close that year.
Yeah that was a great game.
That was the year OSU ran the table, but were ineligible for a bowl game. Oregon was also really good, but lost to Stanford and didn't win their division. A lot of things broke ND's way that year just for them to end up in that game. The conference champs of the ACC, Big 10, and Pac-12 all had at least 2 losses. Kansas St won the Big 12, but had a bad loss to an average Baylor team late in the year.
Top 3 that I'll cheer for:
Iowa (Ext. Fam)
NC State (Younger Sister/Land Grant Univ.)
WF (In-Laws)
Top 3 that I'll always HATE:
UVA
WVU
GT
Edit: Honorable mention - Any team that can upset the "natural order" and bring about additional chaos (i.e. FCS vs FBS, G5 vs P5, just about anyone vs SEC/B10/Pac14)
I didn't clarify this in my post, but Iowa is my #2 behind Hokies., for much the same reason (Beardmother and Beardfather both finished their schooling there).
Teams I like to root for:
K-State
Northwestern
Nebraska
The ACC except PJ and LOLUVA
Always root against:
Any Team Rich Rod has ever coached
All the SEC
PJ and LOLUVA
Utah
Teams to cheer for:
Michigan State (they seem like agreeable folks with a school and program like ours).
Boise State (brother goes there and I really respect the fans up there)
Tennessee (I live in Knoxville and the atmosphere here is cool so I want them to win just enough to keep people excited)
Teams to cheer against:
Alabama because their fans are obnoxious.
Virginia because Virginia
Tennessee (but only enough to keep them from reaching an Alabama level of annoying. Think 8-4 most years with the occasional 9-3.)
Got some young bucks commenting this morning. How quickly they forget.
How is WVU not on everbody lists? You all will get a taste next year at Fed Ex. They are trash. #3 is a toss up? Pitt/Miami. Decent respect for Miami though, as we played some mammoth games with them 95-05, or whenever Butch was there.
I went to Morgantown to the game in '03... my hate for wvu is almost immeasurable. I hated them before, but that was terrible. Also hate LOLUVA and Miami, but both are a distant 2nd behind wvu for me
3 I kinda like:
Marshall
Wyoming
Colorado
Top 3 most disliked:
UNC and it's not close
UVA because them losing is an easy way for me to win a little every week
WVU but only because I'm from WV and see too many social media posts about them for my liking.
I hate all non VT teams.
I root for anyone playing against UVA, WVU, or whoever is playing against any ranked team, unless that ranked team is VT (if two ranked teams are playing, I root for the lower ranking).
Top 3 to root for (no order):
1. Michigan State
2. Georgia
3. Whichever team creates the most chaos
Top 3 to root against:
1. WVU
2. Miami
3. UVA
Teams I like:
Texas A&M
NC State (they also know what its like to be ignored by tobacco road)
USCe (the inlaws)
Deep Hate:
WVU
LOLUVA
The stankin ass "U" (from the big east days)
Guitarman and I must've been in Pritchard together.
I was next door in Lee, and you've got a few years on me, but there must be something in the air in that part of the quad to create similar thinking. It's probably the proximity of the dumpsters and musk rolling out of Pritchard.
At least you didnt mention soda machines from 7th floor windows.
Deplore & Despise : 1- loluiva, 2- the hoovers , 3-new "U" Like somewhat: 1- Washington 2-ATM 3-Colorado
For:
ECU - Want to get something out of that game, also live nearby and know a lot of Pirates.
NC State - They're kind of like VT Lite, NC edition. Land grant engineering school, have to deal with UNCheat who isn't as bad as UVA but definitely have more annoying fans.
Kansas State - This is a bit of a curveball but I have a lot of respect for coach Snyder who reminds me of Beamer in a lot of ways. Probably most admire his ability to do more with less and always exceed expectations at a place where it's tough to win.
Honorable Mention: App, ODU, Boise, Utah, Colorado, UTSA, and Charlotte.
Against (besides the obvious):
Notre Dame - Stuck up and stuck in the past. Lou Holtz. Bad ACC deal. Brian Kelly. Metallic gold and Royal Blue together. What I miss?
Alabama - So many bandwagon fans it's hard to know who actually has ties. Wouldn't hate them as much if ESPN stopped giving Nick Saban bj's every time they're mentioned. Like I get they have the hardware, but they also have the bag men. Why did the DJ Fluker story get like two days of coverage and nothing when other schools get years of sanctions for more minor violations? Also how have people forgotten how much of a dick Saban was when he first took the job?
Ole Miss - This maybe should be at the top. They're basically the wannabe Alabama with much less people, money, prestige and class. Granted while I know some very good people that go and have gone there, I also know there's a LOT of trash. Plus how they play the whole rich entitled jackass frat doucher but somehow are also flat out rednecks (in some cases), irks me to no end. Combine UVA Alabama and WVU and you get pretty close to this stinking pile of crap.
Almost infamous: Maryland, Purdue, Florida, LSU, BYU, Tennessee, and Rutgers.
Good lord, I love how every blue blood school only gets good recruits because "they pay everyone off" as if they don't have an incredible NFL pipeline, excellent coaches, opportunities to win championships, and playing for an enormous rabid fanbase who pumps huge dollars into the program to entice recruits. This narrative is so old and boring. No doubt some shady stuff happens in recruiting, but if it was as prevalent as people (who hate Alabama) seem to think, then it would come to light. Very, very difficult to keep things hidden in this day and age.
Saban was getting these guys before he did anything at Alabama, just like Calipari was getting them before he did anything at Uk. Of course you expect them to have good classes but when they get everybody they want before they have major success, it becomes pretty obvious. So no they don't "only get recruits because 'pay everyone off.'" But when your entire team is made up of 5 stars and there are several allegations of improper benefits over the years, that might signal something's up. Don't act like that's some ludicrous suggestion.
If it was happening on a significant scale, it would have or will come to light in the future. In the meantime, it's just bitter speculation. Some recruiters are able to sell the vision of the program when they are down, and it's a much easier sell when you've won a NC in the conference already and when your program is one of, if not the most successful college football program in history.
Allow me to refer you to this article. Bagmen are definitely a thing. Now, there's never any proof that any particular recruit was influenced to go to any particular school, but that's the point.
I agree that Bama in particular has plenty of other things to sway recruits with, but I'd be more surprised if there WASN'T something going on.
Teams I'll cheer for:
Ohio State (alma mater)
University of Texas
Michigan State
Teams I'll forever hope get the death penalty:
ichigan
UVA
Notre Dame
I see what you did there....
Root for:
1. Ohio State - Family ties
2. Underdogs/Chaos causers - Keeps things interesting
3. ACC teams when playing OOC, except for Clemson, UVA and Pitt (Fuck Pat Narduzzi)
Root against:
1. LOLUVA
2. WVU
3. Clemson
4. Michigan
5. Notre Dame - Join a damn conference.
6. SEC, especially Bama.
7. Teams who have coaches that are aholes.
For:
Louisville (wife)
North Dakota State (they play in a damn dome and ya hafta admire kids who go that far away from everything to get an education and play ball (at a pretty damn high level too))
App State (almost went there and Boone is neat)
Hate:
Ohio State (loathed Cardale Jones and the OSU fans I know are fucking obnoxious...although every fan I ran into at Lane was a pleasure)
Notre Dame (Nute Rockne's and Lou Holtz's aren't coming back anytime soon, folks)
Georgia Tech (the option offense is stupid and so is Paul Johnson)
I wanted to put Alabama in the hate because of their fanbase, but they're such a damn well oiled machine it's kinda hard to hate on...and I respect the hell out of Saban. Also wanted WVU in there but I wanna be friends with Dana Holgerson...reminds me of Bud.
EDIT: saw below someone had Oklahoma State...I must say I do like OkieState. And if you don't like Gundy's mullet, well, I don't like you.
Boone, along with pretty much all of western NC is awesome. That whole appalachia area through multiple states is pretty amazing actually.
I specifically tried to locate potential customers in WNC just to have a reason to go more often. Asheville, Franklin and Murphy NC and Hiawassee, GA for good measure too.
Cheer for:
NC State
UGA
Michigan State
Cheer Against:
UNC
UNC
UNC
(UVA of course, but they are no real threat.)
I hope every single team out there besides the Hokies loses every game....I'm a weird fan.
Fuck Pat Narduzzi
Nailed it.
Cheer for:
South Carolina - because I hate clemson
NC State - all the fans I have met seem like good people
Georgia - great town, second college choice.
Cheer against:
clemson - got sick of them very quickly after moving south from Boston
UVA
WVU
Notre Dame
Alabama
Cheer for:
Texas State
Directional Michigan
NC State
Hate:
Notre Dame
USC
UNC
I cheer for teams that help VT's profile: other ACC teams.
I cheer against whoever plays VT, or whoever is playing against ACC teams.
The exception to the "root for ACC" rule: UVa.
I sort of passively cheer against Ohio State and Alabama. Anyone who plays them is an underdog. Share the wealth already.
I actively cheer against Penn State. Nah, they never did penance, and those coaches and administrators who ignored pedophilia got what they wanted: that program is still robust.
I also cheer against Maryland. They moved to the Big 10 simply as a money calculation. I don't want to see that kind of soulless calculation rewarded. They get enough money from the underwear company who owns them.
Cheer for:
Marshall
NC State
Penn State
Against (keeping it simple and straightforward):
Pitt
WVU
Miami
For:
Iowa
Whoever is playing LOLUVA
Chaos (whatever creates playoff nuttiness or helps Tech advance toward playoffs/championships/better bowl game)
Against:
LOLUVA
ND
GT
Cheer for (Go ACC!):
Clemson
FSU
BC
I would add Loserville but my conference pride only goes so far.
Cheer against:
tOSU (only because Clemson, otherwise I don't mind the 'Bucks.)
Michigan
Georgia (I actually like UGA - they try to do it the right way and their actual Alumni are pretty cool, but it's really funny watching the rest of the fans, most of which never set foot in a classroom on that campus, burst capillaries in their eyes when they lose. Oh, and I liked Richt and I've enjoyed watching their first season under their golden boy Kirby not turn into the SEC Championship and playoff spot most of them thought they were entitled to).
Taking into consideration FB and BBall...
Cheer:
Outside of ACC
Michigan St (gritty in FB, earned the respect in BBall)
VCU
UCLA
In ACC
Clemson
*Pitt (Narduzzi kind of ruined this one for me this year)
Wake
Hate:
Outside of ACC
ND (football)
BYU
Penn State
In ACC
LOLuva
UNCheat
BC (Matt Ryan 2007 game)
This may be the most unpopular list yet.....
Non VT teams I root for
1. Razorbacks - both parents are alums, went to see many games as a kid (family feud coming - the often pondered hypothetical in my family has finally come to fruition)
2. ND - Best friend played there in mid 80s
3. Penn State - Taught there a few years back
The rest of the ACC vs ooc (not lolUVA of course) - good for VT
Teams I despise with deep animosity
1./1. lolUVA and WVU - The three best words that best describe these teams, are as follows, and I quote, "Stink! Stank! Stunk!" If these two ever play, I'll take the seasick crocodile
2. Any team from FL - just hate em all, they are overflowing with the most disgraceful
assortment of deplorable rubbish imaginable
3. Baylor (and now Liberty U) - newest editions with a nauseous super nos, you're a crooked jerky jockey and you drive a crooked horse
Teams I root for:
Navy - Strong ties to the Navy
ODU - Both older brothers and mother(also a VT grad) went there
UCONN - Family ties to Connecticut
Teams I hate:
loluva - duh
ND - rivalries with Navy and UCONN
Alabama - cause fuck bama
Cheer for:
- Iowa (they generally play tough, physical football, and their uniforms look like the Steelers')
- Northern Illinois (their shooting in 2008 kind of makes them a bit of a macabre kindred spirit, and I lived near Chicago for a year and met a bunch of NIU alums and they're pretty cool)
- Marshall (my father-in-law is an alum and my sis-in-law is a current student)
Honorable mention: aTm, against the rest of SEC, due to similarity to VT; Mizzou, since they're pretty much the misfit within the SEC; UConn, because they got shafted in conference realignment and I kind of feel bad; LOLUVA, when playing OOC P5 teams.
Long list of teams to hate, mostly in order of hatred:
- LOLUVA, when playing ACC teams, G5 teams, or FCS teams
- Notre Dame
- WVU
- Alabama
- Rest of SEC
- USCw
- Ohio State
- Texas
- Oklahoma
- Rest of Big XII
- Pitt (mostly Narduzzi)
- Paul Johnson
- Matt Ryan
I'd argue Auburn is close to aTm in the SEC as far as VT-bros. They don't have the corps of cadets like VT or aTm, but their campus is similarly gorgeous and their people seem very similar (biased bc Auburn grad).
If we went by how pretty a campus is, there would be a lot more schools on that list. And obviously I won't begrudge you of your opinion as an Auburn grad, but maybe their place in my NCAA Hierarchy of Hatred is inflated compared to aTm's due to their duration of SEC membership. aTm hasn't really spent that long in their corrupting influence.
That's fair. I don't hate the conference as much as most, since I'm biased towards Auburn.
Not necessarily in order:
NY Yankees(since birth)
Ohio University(Great fans and great band)(remember them playing on the lawn outside the south end zone)
Nebraska(Great fans)(hate to see them in BIG.
Navy(Anchors aweigh)
Dislike:
WVU
Miami
And Brian Kelly as a coach.
For
Oregon
Mich St
Chaos - who doesn't like a good spoiler!
Against (other than obvious)
anOSU
Stanford
Alabama
Gotta go with four here.
For: Georgia, NC State, UNC (kinda have to a little bit), Stanford
Against, besides the obvious rivals: USCw, Notre Dame, Boise State, Michigan
As a former Marine my top 3 are
1. Navy- I served with some fine officers from the Naval Academy
2. Army
3. Air Force
3 I hate are
1.WVU
2.Miami
3.Bama
Thanks for your service, sir. We were at the Army- Navy game this past weekend. What a battle. Always enjoy the privilege to see that game every year. Father in Law went to the Naval Academy, and was career Navy. Tough streak to watch end, but was happy for the Cadets - they fought their ass off.
Who I root for:
1. Miami (Always felt a kinship there from the Big East days)
2. Georgia (daughter is a Jr. there)
3. Wherever Mike Leach is the coach (because pirates)
Who I root against
1. Ohio State
2. Louisville
3. Notre Dame
I'm glad I'm not the only person who looks back to the Big East and likes our rivalry with Miami.
One of my favorite Miami memories was that after the 2001 Nat'l Championship game vs Nebraska, someone asked Portis about running against the Nebraska defense. He said something to the effect of "Nebraska wasn't much of a challenge...now, Virginia Tech? They were a challenge". Miami players always seemed to give us respect.
Cheer for:

Cheer for:
Nebraska -- Used to live there, great fans
Washington -- Live here now
Louisville -- Would love to have as a "good" rival
Cheer Against:
Notre Dame -- The schadenfreude is real
Ohio State -- There is nothing endearing about this team, ever
Alabama -- No other team I'd simply like to NOT hear about all the time. Followed closely by OSU.
Honorable Mentions to Colorado, Oregon State, Oklahoma State, and Iowa as appreciated chaos creators.

-Liberty
-Penn State
-Miami
-FSU
-ND

Root for:
South Carolina
Ole Miss
App State
Against:
UNC
Duke
ECU
Frencht18, wonder if you could create a total tally of 'for' and 'against' after this thread levels out? would be interested to see where TKP stands for teams rooting for and against? We know LOLUVA takes first place for the 'rooting against' so maybe look for the next bottom 3...
Teams I root for: Marshall (student), NC State (grandfather's college), Ohio State (spent a day on their campus, really enjoyed it).
Teams I root against: UNC (cheaters and whiners), Michigan (Harbaugh's an ass and we won the 2012 Sugar Bowl), WVU (lived here my whole life; annoying and delusional fanbase).
Will be creating a forum after the Arkansas game to elaborate on my hate for WVU in anticipation of that game.
Against: UNC, ND, UGA LOLUVA and Miami are defaults for VT fans, so not included
For: San Diego State (undergrad from there), Auburn, who ever is playing UNC, ND, UGA, LOLUVA and/or Miami
Teams I love:
LSU -Orgeron seems like a class act and since 07 when we played them I knew that was a solid program.
PSU -My wife's sister and brother in law went there. I also have a lot of respect for James Franklin.
Miami -Richt is a class act, put together a good staff, and me and my wife love it down there!
Teams I hate:
West Virginia -Classless.
U.Va -Need I say more?
Georgia Tech -Just as bad as the other 2.
Michigan -Danny Caught that ball.
OSU -With Brewer we are 2-0 against them.
FSU, Clemson, Alabama -For taking top talent out of VA.
Teams I love: Navy, UGA, and Auburn. Read the Auburn Creed. They are our brothers.
Teams I wish nothing but ill fortune: loluva, WVU (battery throwers, couch killers), and Alabama (next to WVU, the worst fans I have ever met).
Fer:
Clemson
Michigan
Temple
Agin:
UNC
Notre Dame
UVA
Who I root for:
Michigan (went to the bowl game was around some great fans)
Nebraska (once again great interactions with their fans when they came to Blacksburg)
Anyone playing UVA (Born and raised a Hokie, will always root against them)
Who I root against:
UVA (does anything need to be said?)
Miami (never liked the personality of the team and their fans)
WVU (Been watching VT football since 95, this was a nasty rivalry + couches were burned)
I have teams I pull for in almost every conference, but the main ones are:
Michigan State
Texas A&M
South Carolina
I'm also obligated to root for Navy once a year, root for W&M in FCS, Rice in baseball, and Georgetown in basketball.
Teams I Hate, in order of precedence:
Georgia Tech
WVU
Southern Cal
Clemson
Notre Dame
Miami
Tennessee
Oklahoma
UVA is noticeably absent, because I don't really hate them as much as I pity/mock them. They're the North Korea of athletic programs.
Root For
Georgia- Big fan of Mark Richt (even though he left) and love Athens
Ole Miss- Love the Southern class and tailgate
UNC *ducks*- Just for their basketball
Root Against
Virginia
West Virginia- In my mind, worse than loluva
Alabama
I don't really have teams other than the Hokies I consistently cheer for or against... it's very situational to me. Stories and chaos, that's what I'm after (except if the chaos negatively affects us, of course)
That being said, teams I'm cheering for this year include Colorado, Washington, and WSU. I'll also be pulling for Clemson in the CFP, even though I don't particularly like them as a general rule.
Teams I tend to root against include: UVA, WVU, Tennessee, Miami, Ohio State, Bama, Clemson, ND, teams with 'issues' - UNC/Penn State/Baylor, and teams with douchey coaches - Michigan/Pitt/GT/Nebraska under Pelini/etc - though crazy and douchey are different - I was fond of Les Miles
3 I hate
uva
Notre Dame
Tennessee
I cheer for
Georgia
App St
Clemson
Whoever is playing uva/ND/Tenn unless they are playing each other. When those matchups happen I hope for one fan base to have their hearts ripped out. Example, uva's loss to ND last year. Beautiful!
Wife's 3 teams when VT isn't playing:
ECU (Grad school)

NCSU (used to live in Raleigh)
3 Teams she HATES

Wag of the finger:

Notre Dame (join a conference, douchebags)
Tennessee
Ohio State
Alabama
Clemson
West Virginia (more like Worst Virginia)
Clemson, again
Totals to-date
My methodology:
- Each voter gets max 3 for and 3 against votes (no stuffing the ballot box)
- If you listed more than 3, I counted the first three listed.
- I discarded any vote I couldn't understand.
- Votes like "all SEC" or "Anyone playing ..." were discarded.
- School had to be mentioned by name to be tallied (except "F. Pat Narduzzi", which counts)
And the results:
There were 75 teams mentioned from 38 different states.
Most Liked (Honorable Mention):
Auburn, Iowa, Penn St. So. Carolina (5 votes each)
Ohio St, Clemson (6)
Appalachian St (7)
Texas A&M (8)
Most Liked (4-way tie):
Georgia, Navy, Michigan St., NC State (12)
Most Hated (Dishonorable Mention):
Ohio St, Michigan (8)
Tennessee (9)
Alabama (12)
Miami (14)
UNC (16)
Most Hated (Bottom 3):
Notre Dame (22)
WVU (27)
UVA (40)
Discuss
What's to discuss?
Fuck Notre Dame
Fuck WVU
Fuck UVA
Good work, everyone. Let's call it a /thread.
Penn State is in the most liked and ND is in the most hated? Weird.
Link to Google Map of the results.
This is so cool.
Awesome stuff Pi! Thanks for consolidating!
Good lord, so many votes for Clemson as "most liked"
If only you poor fools knew the awfulness you're blindly supporting.
3 teams i root for:
1. Clemson when playing outside of the conference
2. LSU
3. Air Force
Three teams that I'll always root against..
1. Notre Dame
2. Ohio State (for no reason other than in being petty)
3. Tennessee
For:
1. PSU - family ties
2. Service academies
3. Anyone vs. SEC or ND
Against:
1. ND
2. SEC - can't stand the conference
3. Pac12
For:
Marshall - Lifelong fan, grew up in the Joan
UK - Mom and sister went there, was born in UK blue
USC (the real one) - Best mascot, colors, fight song and cheerleader outfits
Against:
No words for how much I hate loluva and wvu (I even refuse to capitalize their letters).
Also hate the Capitals and Flyers - different argument altogether but I hate them that much
You must be a Penguins fan. Tragic.
Little late to the party...but here we go
Most liked
Iowa
Nebraska-dad tried really hard to make me a diehard
Stanford
Most hated
Uva
Texas
Tennessee
Most Liked:
Alabama - my buddy went there and his dad played there in the 80's
Penn State - was | | that close to going there instead of VT. glad I went to VT but have a lot of love for PSU. out of state tuition is a monster.
Texas A&M - similar situation to PSU
Most Hated:
Michigan
Notre Dame
Pitt - Narduzzi is a whiny little bitch
Subject to change at any time, but, for now:
My top 3 are:
My most hated are:
When it comes to college football, there are very few teams i hate, so i made a list of teams i like/ hate for both football and basketball
Teams I cheer For
1. Syracuse (When you're born in upstate NY, College B-Ball in your blood, its also how you survive winter.)
2. W&M (Currently live in Williamsburg)
3. Any team playing UVA
Teams I Loathe entirely
1. Ohio State
2. Duke
3. Gerogetown (See Syracuse)
Three teams for:
UF- currently go to school there
Michigan state- grew up in Michigan
Oklahoma- really enjoy watching Baker Mayfield and that offense
Three teams against:
Fsu- I can't stand their fans and many of my friends that attend there try to brag and talk about dalvin cook non stop
Tennessee- hate them for battle at Bristol game and for beating uf
Uva- for obvious reasons
3 teams for:
Army: The hardest school to win at.
Alabama: I like seeing them win to hear everyone at work complain about how bad they looked in their win.
Nebraska: Just like em
Against:
West Virginia: This should explain itself
Notre Dame: 2001 Fiesta Bowl Bid
Penn State: Uncle Joe didn't do nothin'
For:
aTm: A lot like us, and they hate the 'sips like we hate the zima-swilling tools in c'ville.
LSU: They're crazy and fun to party with, and my buddy's wife and a couple of good friends went there.
'bama: Even if you don't necessarily like certain teams, coaches, or players (*cough* Tom Brady *cough*), as a football fan it's fun to see the game executed at such a high level.
My hate list is long:
ND: Because they're ND. They get every special exception you can imagine and still want more, because they're ND.
wvu: No explanation necessary.
Pitt: Mostly because they beat us too many times, and more recently because Fuck Narduzzi! Plus one of their fans tried to rip the satellite dish off my truck in 2003 or whenever it was we froze to death tailgating up there before we lost.
TTUN: I was born in Columbus and it was a catch. Oh, and there's Harbaugh.
psu: I've had a mild dislike of them ever since KJ, but seeing the utter delusion of the cult/fanbase up there since Sandusky has earned them a permanent spot on the list. Fuck them forever.
UTw: Texas' version of loluva, except they've actually been good at football.
UTe: They low down, they dirty, they some snitches. And I don't even like pumpkins.
Any team coached by Kiffin, RichRod, or Meyer.
da U: Except I don't really hate them, I love hearing about how back they are every year... and then beating them!
murland: basically an old-bay flavored version of wvu
U$C: Pete Carroll was a lying cheater and it pisses me off that he's also a great coach. Plus that offensive PI call was bullshit.
Clemson: I'll admit that this is mostly because they seized the moment the way we failed to do back in 2000, but man, I cannot wait for them to suck again. Plus Dabo is just annoying.
UNCheat: It's not because they're arrogant, not because they've cheated for decades and got away with it, not because of black santa, not because of Sue Estroff, not because Williams is a dick... oh, wait, yes it is, it's because ALL of those things!
Loserville: Metro Conference, Petrino, and Pitino, 'nuff said.
GT: Let's put it this way, as big an asshole as Narduzzi is, he has a long, long way to go to reach CPJ-level hatred.
The Penguins, Flyers, Rangers, and Islanders. Because what else are you gonna do in the offseason besides hate on some old Patrick Division rivals!?!
I honestly can't say that I really hate loluva anymore. They're kind of like the mildly retarded kid in school that got picked on. You laughed about it at first but then felt bad when you realized that it wasn't really his fault and that he was just born that way....
Just kidding, I still point & laugh every time they lose!
the who?
also, Joe, I like the new preview box (this is my first comment since that update)
It's a derogatory term for Longwhorns..
never before heard of teasips. That's a new one to me
3 Teams I cheer for:

UNC (only because the boss lady was an undergrad there -_- so this doesn't count kind of like their degrees)
