Second Place Redemption?
Hope this kid becomes apart of Hokie Nation today! Seems like him and his team dominated this year and we could use a big body like him to improve our lines!
I will not get my hopes up for recruits, I will not get my hopes up for recruits, I will get my hopes up for recruits.....ah crap
Lol but I actually wouldn't get my hopes for this one. Good chance he's UNCheat bound.
Started by TKPStaff? I have a good feeling about this.
Congrats to Xach and the Cougars on their big win on Saturday! State Champs (Note: Hendon Hooker's Dudley HS won the 4A title and Xach Gill's Wake Forest HS won 4AA)
We'd love to have that kind of dominance add to our wrecking crew in Blacksburg!
My "Hot Take" is that he chooses to play college football for the Hokies of Virginia Tech. But that is just my personal opinion.
I need to know what Hokie20 and Beamer's Garage are thinking on this one before I get my hopes up.
They know all of the things.
...and Ryan Bartow (whose balls are 88% accurate) leads off the Crystal Ball migration towards UNC.
I'm out!
So your saying he has great balls.
Heard from #sauces that the he wasn't a definite take from the VT staff until a couple weeks ago. That probably factors into his decision.
He speaks to all the recruits and doesn't have time to usually catch up on things. I'm hoping the same holds true here but, I've read on the UNC page they think he's a lock from #sauces
Not good Cotton.
Fuente has lost control. /s
We got in on this guy pretty late, and we got a few CB's and everyone got excited. But I won't be shocked if he doesn't pick the good guys.
What I do know for sure, is that if we don't get him, there will be many comments about how we always finish second and how tired everyone is of finishing second for recruits. That I very much hope to avoid having to scroll through.
Ha I'm sure someone on social media will say this proves Foster should be fired.
And the rest of this CUSA coaching staff!
The next time we lose a recruit (whether it's Gill or not) someone on Twitter will assuredly blame Wakeyleaks for it.
Oh lord the fallout...
Xach Gill is currently 80%UNC to 20%VT. If he picks UNC, it seems to me that Tech would be finishing second. Good thing there is a 'collapse thread' feature for you.
ie. 80% chance to UNC obviously means hes coming to Tech...and when he doesnt, its the coaches fault, not the fan base for thinking they should win the lottery every time they play...
I have to look at UNC and VT and see one program on the rise back to greatness and the other falling back to the mediocrity of the conference. Choose wisely.
Go Hokies!
And which one actually goes to their conference championship more than once a decade
Cool so he's going to UNC.
Uh oh.
Our guy Evan G put in for UNC
Best spelling of the name 'Zach' in the history of the world, ever.
It's pronounced "Kevin" though
Can someone explain the "Kevin" joke to me?
http://www.thekeyplay.com/content/2016/august/17/tkp-glossaryquick-refer...
I learn something new every time I open that thread
Everyone should probably go ahead and brace for this not being a win for the good guys.
Then if the CB's are wrong, we can all be pleasantly surprised.
He's a hard UNC lean, wouldn't get my hopes too high.
...if you can help it, ...which i can't. Hopefully he comes to the good guys.
I'm not sure who was saying it in another thread, but they really need to do something about the CB's. Changing them in the 11th hour and not having this tracked is crap.
The result is that they get zero points for the pick. Then you can see which experts have scores worth following.
But it also doesn't count as an incorrect CB, when in fact they were wrong when CB scoring mattered. In the end, they still get a benefit in the scoring for the late switch.
Look, if we held them to what would be a reasonable standard, like you're requesting, it would expose that the experts over at 247 are more like "experts", and people wouldn't be so willing to give them money to get their "expert" opinions.
Bold Prediction: In approximately 5 hours, this thread will be filled with either
or
Either way, in a week it'll be

I had a discussion with a UNC student home from break yesterday about UNC Football that included these:
"We are still a basketball school - students go to football games to get points for basketball tickets."
"Sucks we may have the number one draft QB in the country and we still couldn't win."
"Why would anybody good want to hire away our coach?"
"That Kentucky game was awful."
And yet UNC still beats us in the recruiting rankings most years.
last few.
I have a feeling we'll see this change with the new coaching staff
Yes, even if Gill picks UNC today (and I'm not exactly sure that the staff would be crushed by that), the first big fish is announcing on January 1st in Markquese Bell. Hunter, Garbutt, Proctor, Brad Johnson and others will follow with announcements either in January or on Signing Day.
We obviously aren't going to hit on all our remaining targets, but we have a damn good chance with a lot of them and a lot better chance compared to previous years.
Not really. But don't let the facts ruin a good inferiority complex.
"inferiority complex". Jeez, that's a bit harsh. Plainly stating the actual recruiting rankings would have been fine, thanks.
Or looking them up first rather than assuming with certainty that UNC must be doing better than VT because...well, they're UNC and we're VT.
Based on my time living in the Triangle, my time working around the school and on the campus, and based on all the knowledge I have of UNC's program I will never understand why a big time football player would ever want to go there in a million years.
You mean, now that they have to take real classes.
Same, I've been to a few games there too. I know this is subjective, but the game day atmosphere just isn't at the same level as Blacksburg IMO. Then again I'll never understand why we've lost recruits to UVA either (not many but some).
Xach either sides with Ronald Curry or Michael Vick
Now that is going back a LOOOOOONNNGGGG way!!
But we all know the correct choice is Allen Iverson...
If we get him, great.
If we don't the world doesn't end, but it doesn't help our national championship hopes. Blue chippers matter, and if people want to lament that, I have no problem.
With all due respect to Xach, really solid prospect but not sure he qualifies as a blue chipper. Guys like Hunter, Bell, Proctor, and Rivers are targets who qualify as blue chippers to me.
As long as we get people who are better instead of him instead, its no big deal.
Our staff wants him, that counts
Yeah, the importance of Gill is that he would be the manifestation of the great 12/9 visit weekend coming to fruition. But if people see him more as an OL project than a DT bluechip, then his value as a prospect isn't nearly as high as those other guys.
And it seems to be that UNC wants him for the DL, he would seemingly be an OL for VT. Doubt he wants to play OL over DL in college.
Neither did Russ Grimm, and now he's in the HoF as an OL.
Meh... let him go to UNC. This one would be for perception more than anything. I don't see him as an impact player - he lacks the athleticism and quick twitch off the line that Wiles likes to see in his guys. His future is on the OL and he never played on that side of the ball in HS. Before you make a Nijman or Wyatt Teller comparison, those guys are on a totally different world of athletic ability. We've only got 85 scholarships and the class is filling up. Let's focus on others, i.e. Hunter, Garbutt, Proctor, Speed, and Bell.
Dang we're already at the "downplay the kid's abilities" part of the grieving process and he hasn't even announced yet...
But in all seriousness I mostly agree with everything you said.
Hahaha, for some I guess that is a coping mechanism. However, that is not the case for me.
I question his ability to explode off the line as a defensive end/tackle and his ability to drive block as an offensive linemen due to his Nike SPARQ verified 5.54 second 40 and 20 inch vertical at 6'5" 277 lbs. You can expect those numbers to dip (rise for the 40) a little when he gets to D-1 P-5 playing weight of 300 lbs. I hope it works out for him. I don't cheer against players until they enroll in Charlottesville.
There are plenty of mid-ranked players that bummed me out when they committed elsewhere. This isn't one.
I'm with you on this one.. I think he could end up being a starter-level OG, but not for a few years. Doesn't seem like he's got the quickness/mobility to be the type of DT that we need for our system. Great size and strength and that may be enough in another system but not ours.
Plus we've got a few OL commits already and really need a DT or two. So I'd rather land a clear-cut DT, although if he commits to the good guys I'd be happy about our OL recruiting.
(my pet peeve with this class is too many WR/ATH and not enough OL/DL)
I will be surprised if he signs with us.
I think that guy is Toomany Notes, Assistant Coach, University of Virgina.
Really? He looks like more of a Caruthers to me.
Also more like a
waterzima boy than an assistant coach (not much difference in coaching ability between the two though...)I can understand that. His brother is Caruthers Notes, and one of his responsibilities is ordering the Zima.
20 family members in on the fedora family visit a few weeks ago.
I'll be shocked if he doesn't go UNC.
Our numbers are gonna be really tight anyway, we are gonna need a bigger boat and a few to jump off.
I think this guy would fit on the boat.
Fourth CB just went UNC's way.
The UNC Coaches likely argued that if he does sign with UNC, he can probably squeak in a full college career just before any sanctions for the academic scandal are handed down by the NCAA. Of course by then, the sanctions won't be fair as they'll just be hurting the players and the fans.
don't mind me, I'm just here for the let down
even though i shouldn't be. ...DON'T TELL ME HOW TO FEEL, ALRIGHT
For anyone saying this doesn't matter, consider that the momentum we thought we had with Gill is likely the same for Bell, Proctor and Speed. As in premature. We don't have anyone yet.
Bingo. Fortunately, if I had to lose one of those four it would be Gill. However, you hit the nail on the head. Momentum will fade during the dead period and as players go on other officials. Coaches will need to close hard as February 1 approaches.
UNCheat it is.
Perhaps he gets nervous in front of big crowds and thus chose the mediocre fanbase of Tarheels? Too bad, though, that he'll have to experience 60k+ people cheering on his failure next year in Blacksburg!
So he didn't want to be a part of #Statement17
His loss
Didn't have my hopes up.
They must have used Frank's age against us.
...BUT HE'S NOT THE COACH ANYMORE!!!
Dammt Dabo!
Does this also mean that Lawson will probably transfer?
No
Good...cause I don't think we're ready for that.
He'll now know what it is like to get beaten by VT.
Not sour grapes....but this is no loss....at all.
His film is mediocre - and that is being generous.
But but he's a four star!
Checks spelling of name...looks like a good fit for UNCheat.
