Ok, so this goes against my good natured hatred for Dook, and will likely be my least popular opinion ever given on this site, but I have watched this play now several times and I do not feel as though this was a "flop". Let me explain, Allen is going hard to bucket and likely expecting or at the very least trying to draw contact, which is smart. In order to brace for the impact, he leans in with more force than is necessary to make a normal layup, but now is expecting a contested lay up. Allen does this in order to counteract the force he is expecting to send him in the opposite direction when he assumes he will make contact with the defender. Next, the two players do not make contact, which has led Allen coming at the basket with more speed and force than he intended, he realizes this and tries in mid air to stop his forward momentum by flailing his arms upward quickly and still make the layup, he fails to do either. Finally the referee is a dumbass and calls a foul. In other words, FUCK DOOOOOOK!

Check the video closely and you will see that Allen's left ankle/foot make significant contact with the defender's left hip. This in no way excuses Allen's flagrant over-reaction to the contact, but it certainly is the trigger that caused Allen to go into flopping-mode and try to get the call. For accuracy's sake however, it is incorrect to say that the 2 players had zero contact, when obviously they did. That being said, this totally should have been a no-call by the ref. Complete pandering job to Duke and their prima-donna program.

Everyone keeps blaming either the refs or that guy that trips people. If you watch the video really closely, you will see how terrible the video resolution was during the "real time" of the play. It's not until after the play is over that the replay video resolution shows what really happened. The refs had no choice but to call the play how they saw it, which was a mass of pixels with some guy flailing around a falling to the floor as if he didn't get a hatchimal for Christmas (don't worry Krychefski gets all his players hatchimals).

TL;DR
Fuck Duke, Go Hokies, but this wasn't a flop.
What happened on this play is completely warranted and the amount of hatred in this thread for this one play is not warranted. He gets hit in the trailing leg, which even that can be surprisingly dangerous when flying through the air at that speed.
I hate flopping and made sure never to do it when I played in high school. Given that, I would've reacted the same way as he does on this play.
Is Allen known for flopping? Yes. Is it excessive at times? Sure. Was the whistle late? Yup. Fuck Duke? Absolutely.
But.
Allen is a very very talented basketball player, and I have some respect for you him
Edit: never mind, fuck that guy.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Out of curiosity, did you play basketball? If so, maybe you didn't experience what happened on this play.
But if not, I think you'd be pleasantly surprised at how much important your trailing leg is when going up in the air. On most occasions, it hits the ground before your plant leg. If it gets knocked around mid-air, your body has to completely readjust and figure out how to stick the landing -- hence the jerking around that his body does. Is it embellished? Yes. But having a reaction like that is normal when going up for a layup or dunk.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
He's a good player and that reaction is exactly what I expect from someone who has their landing leg hit. It's within reason, but it's embellished just enough to ensure he gets the call.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
High school, but not college. I had my share of spills. I don't refute the importance of the trailing leg, but he cause the contact by being out of control. The defender didn't hit his foot.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
It's not the flopper I have issue with. No reason players shouldn't try to get fouls called. It's the refs that I have issue with for 1) calling fouls on that crap and 2) favoritism for Duke.
I do hate Duke though.

As much as it pains me to say it, Grayson Allen is a talented hoopster, despite his antics. Who do you think we put on him to shut him down? I'm thinking maybe Chris Clarke? Or do we play zone?

I'm sorry but what a whiny little bitch. This is the kind of showing up of the refs that get you on the shit side of reffing for the rest of your career.

This guy has to be on some drugs or something. I don't care what level you're playing at, no one gets that upset over a fowl in an essentially meaningless game.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
He's upset because he didn't get the call, because the mindset of every player at Duke is and has been for a while that they're going to get every call, and any time they flop, they'll get that call too. Allen tried to sell the trip as a foul on the offense. Look at how he flailed around after contact making it look like the Elon guy hit him good. Refs didn't buy it at all, and when he realized he got called out for it, he threw a tantrum. Rece Davis called him a petulant child last night, and he's 100% correct.
I did love how Greenberg went off on the situation. He called it perfectly, saying Coach K needed to suspend him, because he should have done so last year, and allowing him to play completely violates his own creed. I also loved how he stated the complete truth... If this wasn't a Duke player, the ACC would have suspended him last year. Of course, the rest of the ESPN guys made him roll back those comments, because they can't have the conference embarrassed like that when we have the TV agreement in place, but I'm glad someone finally said it on there.

watching the Kentucky v Louisville game, and after they showed the replay Bilas said something to the effect of (paraphrasing) "with this being the third time he's done something like this, I think the ACC has to step in and do something."

NO
I understand a coach defending his player, except when it's indefensible. And Grayson Allen was indefensible last night. So instead, K just looks like an ass. These 6 words render the rest of what he said completely meaningless.

I honestly didn't know he had apologized. *goes back and reads statement a 2nd time* maybe he did.
It should also be noted at this point that I am quick to rage when it comes to Duke. I'm not a very rational sports fan in the first place and their basketball program/fans exacerbate that tenfold. To put this in terms of A Christmas Story, if I were Ralphie's dad, Duke is the Bumpuses' dogs.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
rat was referring to him apologizing and saying that was right...
"Obviously we will do more -- doesn't mean that you have to see it or anybody else has to see it -- but what he did tonight was right. That's what people do. They say they're sorry, they accept responsibility."
I would really like to see him play one game this year (2016) where every single call goes against him, and he gets T'd up more than once for whining over it. Karma.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I was at the Duke vs Elon game in Greensboro tonight. The worst part is that the Duke fans cheer for him every time he goes on or off the court, as if he's the Pope or something.
Coach K hasn't handled it correctly. I have to believe most other coaches would have suspended him for multiple games at this point.
Oh well. Go Hokies! From what I saw tonight, Duke is beatable!!
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Coach K has to know he hasn't handled this right. Once, sure maybe a heat of the moment thing, extra running in practice. Twice, it clearly didn't get the message across. But this is the 3rd time in 2 seasons. The douche obviously knows he can get away with it and that his rat-faced coach won't do anything about it.

There's a video on ESPN hompege with Jay and Seth saying he must be suspended. Also called him a petulant child and spoiled brat. Seth even called out the ACC saying if this was any team other than Duke, he would have been suspended last year.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Has Seth ever had to provide analysis/comment on a VT game yet? I haven't seen it happen yet but it might have to this year. I think he would be treated well if they ever came for game day.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I hope we get to see it happen... Seth is still loved throughout our fanbase and should we ever have the opportunity to have him on campus again I don't doubt we would treat it as anything less than a long awaited return home.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I'm pretty sure he gave a quick post game breakdown/analysis with Jay after the Nebraska game. It was definitely one of those games during that stretch. I'm sure others might remember better. I thought his analysis was very good. He seemed very unbiased and no one would ever suspect he coached here if they did know ahead of time and yet he still managed to put in a little bit of personal insight about our team as if he still follows all the games.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Seth is, in my opinion, a great guy. He tried like hell to get a basketball culture at VT. His Chalk Talks were hella fun and I remember dipping out of class early to go to D2 with my big brother and hear him break down the game, answer questions, and really engage the every man type of student.
Sure, his results on the court weren't always stellar, but the guy was a good Hokie.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
The way I remember it, he wasn't fired for the team's results on the court. There was never a definitive answer for it, but there were a few signs of things behind the scenes that probably led to it.
If it was purely performance based, Weaver wouldn't have waited so long after the season to make the move.

So just watched the Grayson Allen kicking incident and his subsequent behavior (meltdown) on the bench where multiple Duke staff and players struggled to calm him down. The young man has serious emotional immaturity issues and needs a time-out from playing to get himself some counseling, IMHO. Seriously doubt this will happen, but the ACC really needs to step up to the plate and suspend his butt for multiple games since this is the third time he has clearly kicked other players in the past year.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Agree. The tantrum on the bench is even more worrisome than the act of tripping itself. Honestly hope the kid gets some help because Coach K clearly isn't doing what is necessary to help him.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
It just shows Ks true nature here. In the past he has been all about setting up this aura that he's this great coach but an even better person who cares more about developing the character than the player. Remember those nauseating Amex commercials... Yeah, bullshit, he cares only about the wins and if that means he had to ignore a player who is habitually tripping others on the court, so be it.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
What? No, Coach K genuinely cares about his kids and is gonna do everything he can to make them better players and better people. Didn't you read his comments above? /s
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Coach K is a shithead. At least twice he has lectured an opposing player in the post game handshake line for doing what K thought was a little too much celebrating after a win over Duke (Zabian Dowdell in 2007 and Dillon Brooks for Oregon after they beat Duke in the tournament) but will make every excuse in the book for why he won't punish his own player when they're habitually breaking the rules like Allen is doing. He'll publicly embarrass a kid he doesn't coach and turn their happiness into a moment about Coach K but won't be bothered to lift a finger when it comes to his own team.
He's a snake oil salesmen of a fraud. Yes his teams are good and he has won a lot of games but his whole mantra about being this great teacher and lifetime leader is a bunch of bullshit.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Didn't he also tell the kid from Oregon "you're better than that" and then essentially call the player a liar by denying it, only to be caught on audio/video saying exactly what he claimed he never said?
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I agree with you for the most part though I don't vehemently hate the mans guts and I'm not gonna fly off into a rage over him. Jar Jar Binks, now, that's someone I can fly off into a rage over.
I forward the motion that Jar Jar Binks be hired as Duke's basketball coach when Coach K retires
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Coach K clearly isn't doing what is necessary to help him.
Hey, he's handling it how e handles it. And, um, he's gonna keep handling it how he handles it. And that's, um, correctly, even if you don't see it. Or if you don't see any changes in how Allen plays...so yeah.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Only because he saw that not suspending Allen was going to negatively impact the reputation that Coach K had built for himself. Believe me, if the media shitstorm hadn't come down squarely on Duke and Coach K last night, Allen is starting in Cassell next week.

"Indefinitely" means "I'm not going to commit to a number of games. I'm just going to wait until the uproar calms down and/or we have an opponent we need him for and then I get to bring him back while still acting tough."
Typical Dook B-ball/Special K bullshit.

I could see this being the case if we were ranked in the top 10 or something but I don't think they have much incentive to come see Duke play an unranked team on New Years Eve at noon.

I'm holding out hope that some students might make the trip to Charlotte, head up to Blacksburg for the Duke game and then go downtown to the bars for New Year's Eve. That's something I'd be interested in if I had an apartment in Blacksburg and student season tickets
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Not a student, but my little brothers are, and this was exactly my plan before I looked at Stubhub and saw that tickets for the Duke game were starting at $90 for the worst seats, before tacking on their ridiculous amount of fees.
Then I made other plans, and the tickets have come down to a more reasonable $60 or so, and suddenly I'm slightly regretting it a little.

Are they planning to sell the unused tickets from the student section? I would make the drive from RVA but I don't want to pay above face and it looks like that is the only option right now.

Blacksburg during breaks is the best. When I moved off campus, I spent less time at home and more time in the 'burg. In grad school, I spent pretty much the entirety of every break there, aside from a few days around Thanksgiving and Christmas.

A bunch of friends and I went down to Bburg for the '09 Chick-fil-A Bowl vs. UT on NYE. Probably the best NYE I've ever had. We filled one fridge with Andre and officially destroyed the carpets of that Foxridge apartment beyond all repair that night

Quite a change from last night's sentiments ... Full Coach K statement on Grayson Allen's suspension: pic.twitter.com/hWIYOM9ItI— Nicole Auerbach (@NicoleAuerbach) December 22, 2016
Note "suspended from competition," so that means Coach K is going to sit him for at least one game (e.g. against VT), not just suspended from team activities or something, which means "you'll really learn your lesson by not practicing but I will use you in games when I need you." At least, I hope that's what it will mean. Honestly, the way Allen behaves, I was getting worried about our players' safety.

What really sucks is that Splinter is clearly only changing his tune because of media pressure. This wouldn't have happened if they weren't catching so much flak for it.

let me guess, he's suspended from all competition for the next calendar week. He'll be eligible to play in their next game following the 30th. You know, just to show how serious K is about this whole thing.

Yup. Fuck Duke? Absolutely.
But.
Allen is a very very talented basketball player, and I have some respect for you himEdit: never mind, fuck that guy.
Are you serious Clark?
Yes his foot hits the defender, but only after he's past the defender, who barely moves. He's out of control. If anything it's his own fault.
Not Clark, just have the same handle as him.
Yes. But having a reaction like that is normal when going up for a layup or dunk.
sarcastica?
No.
He's a good player and that reaction is exactly what I expect from someone who has their landing leg hit. It's within reason, but it's embellished just enough to ensure he gets the call.
High school, but not college. I had my share of spills. I don't refute the importance of the trailing leg, but he cause the contact by being out of control. The defender didn't hit his foot.
underrated gif
It's not the flopper I have issue with. No reason players shouldn't try to get fouls called. It's the refs that I have issue with for 1) calling fouls on that crap and 2) favoritism for Duke.
I do hate Duke though.
As much as it pains me to say it, Grayson Allen is a talented hoopster, despite his antics. Who do you think we put on him to shut him down? I'm thinking maybe Chris Clarke? Or do we play zone?
Maybe the ACC just suspends him for the ACC opener since he doesn't even try to hide it
Second look: appears he then tries to flail and make it look a bit like a flop.
What a scumbag. That deserves a suspension.
Looks like he was throwing a little Dab in at the end.
lol what an idiot. Dook doesnt scare me.
I'm sorry but what a whiny little bitch. This is the kind of showing up of the refs that get you on the shit side of reffing for the rest of your career.
You'd think he just fouled out in the Final Four.
That pretty much sums up why I hate Dook so much....abso*fucking*lutely disgraceful. You're playing college ball not pickup basketball with 6 year olds. Grow the fuck up punk.
Rant over.
Aww poor wittle guy
This guy has to be on some drugs or something. I don't care what level you're playing at, no one gets that upset over a fowl in an essentially meaningless game.
Where is the video of this?
Sorry, don't know how to embed from ESPN
Whoo boy.
watching the Kentucky v Louisville game, and after they showed the replay Bilas said something to the effect of (paraphrasing) "with this being the third time he's done something like this, I think the ACC has to step in and do something."
Wonder who dook plays next.... /s
I want to whip their asses straight up, especially Allen.
Front page of ESPN right now...
XM radio update announcing scores added "...yet another tripping incident" to the Duke result. This isn't unnoticed by the media, but I don't know if the leagues can/will do anything.
Well, it sounds like Coach K certainly won't.
ARE YOU FECKING KIDDING ME
NO
NO
I understand a coach defending his player, except when it's indefensible. And Grayson Allen was indefensible last night. So instead, K just looks like an ass. These 6 words render the rest of what he said completely meaningless.
I took that as meaning Grayson's apology and/or penance was right, not the foul itself.
I don't think even Coach K. at his worst would justify that tripping.
To put this in terms of A Christmas Story, if I were Ralphie's dad, Duke is the Bumpuses' dogs.
rat was referring to him apologizing and saying that was right...
"Obviously we will do more -- doesn't mean that you have to see it or anybody else has to see it -- but what he did tonight was right. That's what people do. They say they're sorry, they accept responsibility."
http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/18328405/duke-blu...
Was this written before the game? Which reputation is she referring to?
What a douche punk
I do think someone ought to tell him one day he'll pull that stunt on someone and end up picking his teeth up off the floor
Maybe he'll start hanging out with Ryan Lochte so they can get worked over by the same invisible mugger.
I would really like to see him play one game this year (2016) where every single call goes against him, and he gets T'd up more than once for whining over it. Karma.
Know I'm probably gonna get flamed for this, but I think Seth is a really good analyst.
Actually I think most agree with you.
(retracted)
UVA fans even agree. Seth is widely acclaimed as a good analyst.
Has Seth ever had to provide analysis/comment on a VT game yet? I haven't seen it happen yet but it might have to this year. I think he would be treated well if they ever came for game day.
I hope we get to see it happen... Seth is still loved throughout our fanbase and should we ever have the opportunity to have him on campus again I don't doubt we would treat it as anything less than a long awaited return home.
The other commentators still rib him about his bubble "success" from time to time.
The way I remember it, he wasn't fired for the team's results on the court. There was never a definitive answer for it, but there were a few signs of things behind the scenes that probably led to it.
If it was purely performance based, Weaver wouldn't have waited so long after the season to make the move.
If he tries that crap on LeDay, ohhhh boy.
It's players acting like this that make me wish more sports let athletes settle things like hockey does.
Problem would be, Allen wouldn't get called, and LeDay would get T'ed up for a retaliation
Agree. The tantrum on the bench is even more worrisome than the act of tripping itself. Honestly hope the kid gets some help because Coach K clearly isn't doing what is necessary to help him.
What? No, Coach K genuinely cares about his kids and is gonna do everything he can to make them better players and better people. Didn't you read his comments above? /s
Didn't he also tell the kid from Oregon "you're better than that" and then essentially call the player a liar by denying it, only to be caught on audio/video saying exactly what he claimed he never said?
This is exactly what happened. It was his way to make the tournament more about him than about the players and teams that were still in it.
I agree with you for the most part though I don't vehemently hate the mans guts and I'm not gonna fly off into a rage over him. Jar Jar Binks, now, that's someone I can fly off into a rage over.
I forward the motion that Jar Jar Binks be hired as Duke's basketball coach when Coach K retires
well, I mean Scheyer is already an assistant....
Meesa called Coach Scheyer. Weesa gonna win!
Do you really want Jar Jar with Duke though? Then Duke would have a Sith lord running the team. Oh wait, that's just business as usual.
Shout out to Zabian Dowdell.
Hey, he's handling it how e handles it. And, um, he's gonna keep handling it how he handles it. And that's, um, correctly, even if you don't see it. Or if you don't see any changes in how Allen plays...so yeah.
Coach K suspended him indefinitely
Only because he saw that not suspending Allen was going to negatively impact the reputation that Coach K had built for himself. Believe me, if the media shitstorm hadn't come down squarely on Duke and Coach K last night, Allen is starting in Cassell next week.
"Indefinitely" means "I'm not going to commit to a number of games. I'm just going to wait until the uproar calms down and/or we have an opponent we need him for and then I get to bring him back while still acting tough."
Typical Dook B-ball/Special K bullshit.
One should strive to love their spouse the way Grayson Allen loves tripping people on a basketball court.
Really wish the students were going to be at this game with some great signs and chants for him but it's not too be, what a wasted chance.
It's sold out, you might be surprised.
I'm hoping it's not 50% Duke fans.
I could see this being the case if we were ranked in the top 10 or something but I don't think they have much incentive to come see Duke play an unranked team on New Years Eve at noon.
(I'm an eternal optimist)
I'm holding out hope that some students might make the trip to Charlotte, head up to Blacksburg for the Duke game and then go downtown to the bars for New Year's Eve. That's something I'd be interested in if I had an apartment in Blacksburg and student season tickets
Don't... Student section will be weak
I'm holding out hope that the Cassell Guard will make a "crying Greyson Allen" fathead in time for the game.
Are they planning to sell the unused tickets from the student section? I would make the drive from RVA but I don't want to pay above face and it looks like that is the only option right now.
Am I the only person who just stayed in Blacksburg all but ~2 weeks of the year when they were a student? I'd be all over this game.
GRAYSON ALLEN SUSPENDED...indefinitely??
Indeed.
Note "suspended from competition," so that means Coach K is going to sit him for at least one game (e.g. against VT), not just suspended from team activities or something, which means "you'll really learn your lesson by not practicing but I will use you in games when I need you." At least, I hope that's what it will mean. Honestly, the way Allen behaves, I was getting worried about our players' safety.
yeah, this is exactly what i figured. no way they keep him out too long with ACC play about to kick off
Yea, I would expect a max of 3 games. They should be fine against GT and BC at home, so worse case they would be 2-1 going into the FSU game.
Suspension will end 11:59am on 12/31, book it.
I think they will keep him out 3 games or more.
What really sucks is that Splinter is clearly only changing his tune because of media pressure. This wouldn't have happened if they weren't catching so much flak for it.
I'm shocked Ferret Face actually did something.
I still have very little respect for the guy. But he did take a step.
Yes, did you see the espn report. Showed him tripping a few players then melting down on the bench. He looks like quite the tool.
Oh they're not announcing how long....
let me guess, he's suspended from all competition for the next calendar week. He'll be eligible to play in their next game following the 30th. You know, just to show how serious K is about this whole thing.
To be sure everyone knows they are serious he will be out for eight and half days.
*dances jig of schadenfreude*
Time to call the quality of our win over Duke into question!
Meh, they're still a top 10 team without him. Especially with Giles back now
I hope he's suspended but in attendance for our game, so he has to sit on the bench right in front of the student section and listen to them talk shit to him without being able to do anything about it
If this game wasn't over Christmas break and all the students were in town he would be eaten alive.
I was looking at a reddit thread and it seems like the Duke fans are starting to turn on him as well. That can obviously change pretty quickly, but it will be interesting to see how this plays out.
That'll change as soon as they lose to us. They'll start freaking out about how "terrible" they are without him.
KId is living on borrowed time. The latest tripping incident even has Jay Williams and rest of ESPN going after time and K for not suspending him. Jay W even suggested someone was going to take a swing if it does not stop.
He won't get a chance on NYE, but if Grayson Allen trips LeDay in the ACC tournament let's just say that game would be the focus of ESPN coverage for a couple of days.
A suspension is a good start, but frankly, his antics are so unbecoming of a sitting US senator that they should be sufficient grounds for impeachment. Also, do we know his dad didn't kill JFK?
The current intro to his Wikipedia page:
I like that even better than "known for flopping constantly".
Seems like a good enough time to bring my old Mascot Mock contribution back out:
What's also great about this "Tripgate" stuff is that it made the national news last night. At least NBC and ABC reported on it during their newscast. Slow news night, or does everybody in the country hate Duke like we do?
