It's officially WVU week. I know a lot of us aren't excited about this game and having to interact with their fans, but hear me out.
It's no secret that we've completely outgrown the UVA rivalry. Miami was a decent rival in the Big East and early ACC days, but I still think we've owned that rivalry. Plus, they don't have many fans to make it a good rivalry. UNC hasn't been good long enough to be a rival.
WVU would have been that team we went back and forth with the last 12 years if we kept playing (stopped playing for good reasons, though). The hatred between the fans, the near to equal talent between the two teams, and the relative closeness of the two teams is what epitomizes some of the best rivalries in college football.
Spending my entire life living in WV (which isn't as bad as people make it out to be if you live in a good area), my weekends revolved around two games. The VT game and WVU game. I don't want to say I rooted against WVU just as hard as I rooted for VT, but that was the case. When we won the 2007 ACCCG and they lost to 4-7 Pitt and threw away their National Championship hopes, it was one of the happiest days of my life. This game has been 12 years in the making for me.
So, let's rekindle this fierce rivalry for one day in September. Let the DMV area be a swamp of maroon and orange Friday night. Let's make WVU fans apparent savior Will Grier look like Skyler Howard 2.0. Let's see Jrod Evans slice up that WVU defense that is losing 8 seniors.
And, when we win, we can hang on to that Black Diamond Trophy for at least another 4 years, while their fans continue to talk about 2002 and 2003. See y'all in Landover on September 2nd, 2017.

BECAUSE WE JUST COMPLETED THE GREATEST COMEBACK IN VT HISTORY, FAMMMMMM
And let Brian Mitchell's group get DBU off to a great start to the 2017 season against his previous employer!
Let's keep the trophy in Blacksburg
That is a shiny/reflective piece of coal...
NO
I'm excited to play the cousins because it brings back some good old Big East nostalgia, a once rabid conference rivalry. Also, I have cousins in WV who go to WVU, so it's so convenient to say we're playing the cousins. Also I'm excited to brush a little dust off the Black Diamond Trophy just to put it back on our shelf after the game. We need a little housekeeping every now and then anyway.
There is a slight chance that someone I may or may not know very well found his or her way into the practice facility, found a room that trophy is sitting in, and took a picture with it during an offseason before moving out of their apartment in Blacksburg. There is also a slight chance that in said room there was a football signed by Metallica and Frank Beamer.
Never be excited to play these assholes. Just win and get out of the game in one piece. Great rivalry, but the fan base is the worst on earth.
There will be more of us than them by the end of the game. We'll be okay.
You say that... but I remember beating them in Blacksburg when they were ranked #7. We stormed the field and their fans stuck around to throw bottles at us from the bleachers...

They just don't go away.
WVU is herpes: it's about suppression
I too was there and loved chanting ACC back at there faces!
I admire your spunk and optimism, but I would be happier if WVU was just not allowed to play football anymore.
Definitely means more to me than most. Spent my whole life dealing with their fans.
Fuck West Virginia.
We're going to crush 'em. Looking forward to it.

I'd be happier if the game weren't being played in the fetid hellhole that is FedEx Field.
I'd rather it be at FedEx than in Blacksburg or Morgantown.
For this game, neutral location all the way.
VT has won in Morgantown. They've never won in FedEx.
I see that as something to change, not to run from.
Yep, new sheriff in town, new traditions to make and old jinxes to break.
If we only beat WVU, Clemson, ND, and UVA I'll consider next year to be a huge success.
I don't believe we play ND next year, but you can throw Pitt in for ND because I never want to lose to Narduzzi...
If we only beat WVU, Clemson and UVA (dont play ND) next year, that means we'll have lost to Delaware, ECU, ODU, Duke, UNC, Pitt, GT, Miami and BC.
I would not consider that a success of any kind.
Let's be honest, the DMV is littered with more Hokies than Neers. And it's not like the cousins have enough money to make it to the game anyway. There will be plenty of maroon and orange at that stadium (but fuck that stadium and fuck Dan Snyder).
