There was a time before this:

Way back when, in a game against a I-AA team, a win was a given. Now threads like this have to be prefaced by, "let's get the win." So, in addition to actually winning the football game, what are y'all hoping to see out of the Hokies this weekend? A blowout, a shutout, a blocked kick, less drops, etc...? In addition to the win, what would make this a successful Saturday?
Here are some relevant depth chart notes that might factor into your viewing expectations:
- Coleman is back, and he's listed as the co-starter with Edmunds.
- D.J. Coles is now the second flanker behind Stanford.
- Freshman tight end Kalvin Cline (who committed in May) is no. 2 on the depth chart with Darius Redman. Both are ahead of Zack McCray.
- Charley Meyer is probable.
- Joel Caleb is back from suspension, but is the third (fourth) stringer behind Mangus (Trey and J.C.).

No injuries. Receivers actually catching the ball. And a shutout with no fewer than 2 defensive scores.
I want to see the offense coming out angry and cramming the football down the the Catamounts' defense repeatedly. Strike hard, no mercy.
I just wanna see shi* that makes sense. No injuries. Shutout. CATCH THE BALL!!!!! We're going to see plenty of younger less experienced players this week. We'll be on pace for a huge 70-0 win by half time but the second half will see a lot of new faces and the scoring will slow down. The final will probably be 48-7 but I would rather see 70-0
You predicted a pretty close final score
Success for me will be defined by whether our defense is ranked number 1 in the country, yardage-wise. So if we hold WCU to less than 100 yards, that spells success for me.
I like it...
ranks and yardage through yesterday:
but the real surpise is:
6. Duke 210.5 - blew out NC Central and beat Memphis
honorable mention for surprise:
7. Marshall 211.5 - rolled Miami-OH and Gardner-Webb
Awesome post, hoqiez. We're the only team in there who has played anyone of note except Florida. Miami should have been able to move the ball, but couldn't. I'm not too disappointed in the #4 ranking, but we'll have to lock down Marshall and ECU in yardage to get up higher. I'd also like to see how our defensive PPG numbers turn out after the Alabama game fades for a while. I think I heard somewhere that ST and Pick6 points are still counted against the defense, which disappoints me.
Wisconsin will be up there all season because they don't play anyone out of conference and the Big Ten has few offenses. They play Ohio State and NW'ern, the only two that should be able to put up yardage. AzState will have to play Wisconsin, USCw, Stanford, ND, and Arizona, so they'll tumble. Michigan State gets ND, Michigan, an NW'ern.
Side note, if Marshall has a defense, that'll be 'closer than the experts think'.
1. Win the game. Duh.
2. Injury Gods fly over without stopping in Blacksburg.
3. Not just the receivers, but tight ends make progress in passing game. Hokies need this.
4. The score is lopsided enough so that 2's and 3's get a lot of work. Especially LB's and O line.
5. The new scoreboard works without a hitch.
Success is defined as (in order from most probable to least probable):
honestly, I'd like to see JC or Caleb get a 100...
All 3 with 100 and LT with 300 yards passing....
I'd love for us to just hit 400 total yards of offense. More would be just gravy
Yeah, I agree. This is the type of opponent (knock on wood) where we should have multiple 100-yard rushers. Let's shoot for 250 rushing, 200 passing. We did 246 rushing and 150 passing against BGSU last year (37-0).
And somehow that was still an underwhelming game to watch last year...
I want to see things carry over from Bama. If we did it well last week, we should dominate this week. So I hope to see domination on defense, on the O-Line, and in the running game. Any let down in those areas would be pretty disappointing to me.
I also want to see us improve on the things we did poorly. I want us to have a solid game on special teams, have some good kick returns and defend our kicks much better. Obviously I want to see our receivers catch the ball and Logan to give them good passes to catch. These things will just help morale and confidence as we move forward.
I mentioned this yesterday, but mainly what I want to see is a passionate, pumped up, football team. Joe mentioned the.I cant even say it but you know what game Im referring toto start this post and that was a prime example of not coming to play. I want to see these guys jumping around on the field, giving high fives and acting like this game is the most important game of the season. We have such a bad recent history of playing to the level of our opponent, and nothing would be more disappointing to me than seeing WCU match our intensity and be in the game past the first quarter.
I hope the coaches really challenged these guys this week. Obviously the goal is to win the game, but thats just not enough in a game like this. If I were coaching I would tell the players that I expect them to be up by 4+ scores going into halftime, and if theyre not then they didnt play as well as they could have. We should be going into the game this week with the mentality that they shouldnt even be on the same field as us and that anything other than a pure, unadulterated beat down is not acceptable.
A.) Beamerball. Actual. fucking. Beamerball.
B.) O-line come together and road grade the Kitties.
C.) CATCH THE FUCKING BALL, WRs.
D.) Play nasty up front on D.
E.) Pitch the shutout.
Yes, all around!
I don't think a shutout shows success this week. We will (hopefully) have the scrubs of the scrubs in late into this one. We will likely give up at least a late field goal. But I definitely think the starters, and really even the second string, should be able to keep a big goose egg on the board.
Lets please find a different description for these guys other than scrubs. They work just as hard as the starters in fact maybe harder in search of playing time. Sorry for mini rant but obviously a personal issue. Lets go!
Foster has put starters back in to keep the shut out, so no worries there.
1. Receivers actually catch the ball
2. Edmunds runs roughshod (sp?)
3. Blocked punt
4. Sam Rogers allows WCU to walk away from a blowout with their lives
Pretty much what everybody else has said:
*Win the game
*Nasty, lights out D
*Continued improvement in the running game
*Improvement on the O-Line, and with the WRs and QB
Edit: Forgot one thing - an animal, preferably a horse, on a treadmill during our commercial
I'll tell ya what I don't want to see:
THIS:

OR THIS:

JUST THIS (#AllTheTime):

Someone said that the team would get #ALLMAROONEVERYTHING when they earned it. So.... The defense wears all maroon and the offense wears Hokie tracks helmets?
1. WR's catch the ball
2. Defense continues success
3. Kyshoen returns punts
4. The Chicken Tender Shuffle comes back better than ever.
1. If Foster's defense denies Western Carolina's pussy touchdowns.
2. I finally defeat The Kraken
One thing we still don't know is whether "pussy touchdowns" is noun-noun or adjective-noun. Thus you could have also said "If Foster's defense denies Western Carolina pussy touchdowns." This just adds to the mystery...
"I'm too drunk to taste this catamount."
-Colonel Sanders
Saturday's game against WCU will be a success if... there is a dog on an underwater treadmill during the Invent the Future commercial.
I want an underwater dog, a horse (under or above water), and mechanical jelly fish all on treadmills
If the fans stay for all the game and don't leave at halftime...... ESPECIALLY IF ITS RAINING DAMNIT!!! *looks at JMU*
I think our success will be defined (beyond winning) as:
1) No scores and less than 150 yards on 1st team defense
2) 1st team offense puts up at least 24 by halftime. I know this might seem a bit low, but we have a tendency to start sloppy. I want more than this, but 24 is a decent number.
3) FEWER THAN 5 DROPS!!!!!!!!!!
4) Plenty of time for the 2's and 3's
We don't need to win by 50+, something along the lines of 38-3 or 45-7 is what I'm seeing this weekend.
1. No Let off from the D just because it's not a big game. *See last year after GT*
2. WR's doing WR things...like catching.
3. Something blocked, punt or FG or XP...doesn't matter.
4. Kickoff or PR for a TD.
5. Half a hundred hung on them by halftime so #2's and 3's on the depth chart can get some playing time.
#'s 1 and 2 are a must. I'd like to see just one of #'s 3-5.
1. POUND THE ROCK
Defense holds WCU to negative rushing yards and under 100 total yards. Anything the offense or special teams does in terms of scoring is icing on the cake. The defense is going to have to carry this team a couple more weeks before the Offense finally gets everything down pat.
Lots of rushing yards
No sacks
Another standout defensive performance
Oh and no more drops....please
OH AND consistancy from Logan and on target throws! That'd make me a happy camper
Special teams would be nice too..
honestly, the most important thing to me this weekend is the O-line mopping up a smaller less athletic D. Outside of a loss or injury nothing would upset me more if we don't flat out dominate WCU in the trenches. I'll forgive the Lunchpail side for a letup in this one, in my eyes they have less to prove, but Grimes' guys need to treat this as an opportunity to practice, and practice hard, without beating up their fellow teammates.
3rd and 5? 4th and goal on the 3? Smash it. Just make it a habit to be nasty physical all the time. We've seen all too often in the past not getting a push on lesser competition and I would love to see those times behind us.
well, I was wrong. Felt good about both lines' performance, but overall felt like the game was not a "success." Still really concerned about our passing game.
1. Nobody interrupts me watching the game on my computer. (Work....)
2. I am able to get the jerk marinade prepared and applied and start the smoking/grilling process with enough time to properly slow-cook the chicken.
3. uva decides to change to Division II after being embarrassed from the largest point differential ever witnessed in the history of college football.
Is that picture a Photoshop? I don't remember that happening.
ugh didn't even look at the scoreboard....it's too soon, Joe.
-The defense holds WCU under 10 points and 100 yards.
-Logan throws for over 200 yards.
-The rushing game combines for over 250 yards.
-VT wins by over 42 points.
-Sam Rogers gets over 10 carries.
A win for me this weekend (aside from the obvious win by score) would be:
1. 300+ yards of offense
2. Zero turnovers by the offense
3. Fewer than 5 drops by all receivers
4. Defense picks up where it left off and WCU has less than 200 total yards
Bonus points that would make me very happy:
1. Logan completes 75% of his passes or more
2. Defensive or special teams score
3. At least 3 turnovers forced by the defense
Sellout and Shutout.
(Man, the old scoreboard already looks ancient!)
GO HOKIES!
1) I want all 3 RB's to go over the 100 yard mark
2) Zero sacks given up
3) WR's catching the ball
4) 5 sacks
5) 2 INT's
6) Under 150 yards given up
7) 500 yards of offense
That isn't much. Is it?
I think you hit all of mine, especially #1.
Being real for a moment, Tech could score as many as they want on these poor Cats. They could probably shut them out as well, if they played their starters the whole game. They could TRY to break the NCAA point differential and win 240-0 (but only if they go hurry-up.)
I think what the COACHES want is to see the starters pulled at half-time after playing mistake-free football. They want to evaluate players like Coleman (who bulked up a bit) and Caleb (who changed positions). They also want to find their best TEs, especially one that can stretch the field and be an offensive weapon. They want to find an alternative (or at least a back-up) to DJ Coles at H-Back.
They want to get Logan comfortable in the pocket while going through his progressions. They want him making good reads and hitting his check-down receiver instead of trying to make something happen. They want the receivers to gain confidence and practice running sharp routes, catching the ball and finishing the play. They want to run some base plays and make correct game-speed reads running the triple-option.
They want to see the new starters on kick coverage stay in their lanes and play their assignments. They want a kick blocked to show that they can still do it (of course they can, its the 'Mounts.)
This game can be 77-0, or as ugly as the Spring Game. The uglier it looks, the more the coaches learn about the back-ups.
I think the starters stay in through the 3rd quarter, as Weaver wants to increase ticket sales. Who thought that wouldn't be part of the game plan?
Defensively:
- 50% of plays go for a loss
- 5 First downs allowed
Offensively:
- Logan throws good balls - receivers catch good and bad balls
- O-line getting to the second level allowing for large gains
- WR blocking downfield
Special Teams:
- Practice punting so there is NO return (either fair catch or ball hits turf)
- Kick off deep enough for touchbacks every time
- Seriously, if there is NEVER a return - the opponents offense will have to face VT's Defense
All those things above plus a defensive or special teams TD.
Blowout, shutout, blocked kicks, and less drops.....?
I'll take all of the above.
Predict WCU to have -12 rushing as Dadi will have 3 sacks, 14 pass yards for total of 2 yards in first half. KJ34 returns punt for score and Caleb houses one on his first touch of the season late in the second quarter. Second half...........
If Jarrett is returning punts against WCU with that trick hamstring, I may drive to Blacksburg and shake somebody.
Let Byrn return punts. Based on what I saw this past week, I would be looking at Greene and Mangus to work with Coleman on kickoff return. Keep Jarrett and Kendall fresh, as they will be working against no-huddle spread defenses the next three weeks and the tempo could wear them down.
The lets be careful of injuries get out of this week unharmed with a solid win side of me agrees but the this is the strategy that has seen "Beamerball" decline wants three phase dominance again and we need our elite athletes on the field in #allmarooneverything side of me disagrees. Say that three times faster with a mouthful of vinegar sauce q in your grill!
Dominance up front.
Efficiency at the skill positions. When I say efficiency, I mean getting first downs on 3rd down passing situations and staying ahead of the sticks.
If every play looks like Bo Jackson on Tecmo Super Bowl, I am ok with that too.
1. Win- the only thing that matters
2. Make them give up after half time. Physically beat them down like we should and have fun doing it.
No third downs on offense for the entire game. 80% 3 and outs for the defense.
For me a VT success would be...
1) Controlling the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball 100% of the game
2) No letting off the gas in the first half. ( Just because we are more talented still doesn't mean we let them off easy, it only develops for complacency in the players)
3) Running backs reaching the second level or further more then 50% of the game. (Looking for O-line dominance)
4) 100 yards of Total offense through 3 quarters by the defense (pretty tough but after three beamerball botches they should be foaming at the mouth to show it was a fluke and will never happen again)
5) Running game 200 plus yards total by end of the game (RB's only) Not counting the L Train.
6) 80% Passing efficiency by LT (more about the WR's then LT3)
7) Use of the tight end this week. I miss the Jeff Kings and Greg Boones of yesteryear.
9) No Sacks caused by the O Line missing a block.
8) Last but not least, Sam Rogers catching a pass in the game and see who has the manhood to try to get in his way as he rumbles down the field.
According to Andy Bitter, "The Catamounts gave up 329.4 yards per game on the ground, second worst in the FCS to Idaho State."
200 yds would be approximately 100 yds less than average. Perhaps, you're assuming LT3 will get 130 yds rushing...
Good Point I guess I should hope for 200 yards in the first half then. Thanks for the info.
This game will be a success if the receivers stop playing like George Michael

There are not enough turkey legs on the internet to reward this post enough.
If we dont drop any passes....ANY...none...EVEN IF THIS HAPPENS
Wow amazing grab thanks for sharing.
Tyrone Prothro FTW
For as much as I agree and like that video, it makes me so much more angry that our COLLEGE receiver's cannot even catch a ball thrown directly into their hands.
Horrible quality, but I can't find a better clip of our esteemed WR coach's behind the back catch
Hoping that rubs off on our receiving corps
If we don't top GT's 70-0 win over Elon I'm gonna be ticked.
I'd like to see 10 sacks, 5 forced turnovers, 3 none offensive touchdowns, 300 yards rushing, 250 yards passing, 75% completion percentage, no Hokie turnovers, and one block kick to restore the old ball coaches confidence in himself..I think that is very important. We can't have Beamer doubting himself.
Joe...I never felt confident playing Temple...ever.
This weekend needs to be stacked with defense. Maybe some interceptions for touchdowns. Big confidence game for trey Edmunds and Logan.
I'd be pissed if I don't see that chicken tenders game on the new screen
I just want to see force on the OL. No more 3&1 4&1 against these teams and losing a yard (cough...Austin Peay).
WRs with their head in the game would be nice (drops are almost completely mental).
Speaking of which does DK80 remind anyone else of Clifford Franklin (the Replacements). Can outrun everyone but can't catch.
