Jerod is a better QB than Mitch Trubisky of North Carolina ; DeShone Kizer of Notre Dame
; Brad Kaaya of Miami (Fla.). With a good showing at the NFL combine , Evans can be a 2nd round pick. He just needs one team to give him a shot at competing.

Yeah, and that's about it lmao. He just doesn't have the accuracy and poise in the pocket to be a high draft pick. We saw him immediately go into run mode when his first read wasn't there so many times this year. It works great in college because he was able to escape and get yardage, but that doesn't fly in the NFL.
I love Evans and hope he succeeds, but I would bet money that he never starts a full season for an NFL team.

The one read was almost entirely the scheme and called play. There was NO other read to make a lot of the times. We don't really know what his ceiling his because he wasn't out into that position to fail. As for starting an entire season if that's your measuring stick for NFL QB's you have set the bar very high. Tyrod didn't start this entire season. For me is does he make a roster, does he start any games, does he stay in NFL more than 5 years on active rosters.

You can't really use "management decided not to risk a $27mil injury in an already-lost season" in this case. That was a money decision, not a football one.

NFL is all about business. Players get sat for rest, team already made playoffs, to try new guy all the time. Thus why using "starts entire season" isn't a quality indicator on if a kid is an NFL level QB.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Ok he isn't ever going to win a QB battle and go into a season as the number one QB. Only time I see him starting a game is if injuries force him in, or a team is already in the playoffs and he gets to play to prevent an injury to the top guy.
Basically, I want to say he will never start a game, but there are a few scenarios where could find his way in.

I saw Evans throw 15-20-55 yards on more than one occasions. One example is his 55 yards pass to Cam Phillips VS East Carolina. Evans is a taller, faster version of Dak Prescott.
Evans is also undefeated against Mitch Trubisky ; DeShone Kizer ; Brad Kaaya . He just needs one team to draft him. He will make a GM look really smart by drafting him.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Dak was also a much better passer...like it isn't even close the kinds of passes they made in college. It doesn't matter if he is taller and faster, Dak was a much better passer.

Getting paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to workout, practice football, play preseason, and then carry a clipboard on Sundays with a slight chance of actually having to play? Sounds good to me.

I agree with you. He definitely needs time to work on the skills of his position and I really hope he gets picked up by a staff that will work with him.

I distinctly remember the year The Bills picked Ej Manuel in the first round. So anything is possible with the right team when it's a weak quarterback class.

Thats awesome. I was sad when Evans declared not just for the Hokies, but also for him if it doesnt work out. People compare him to Dak Prescott, but he also compares with Tajh Boyd who had a much more prolific college career. Tajh was a good college quarterback and hes only been able to amass a handful of months here and there in the league.
Tajh senior year: 3851 yards 68.5% completion 34 TDS 11 Int 400 yards rushing and 10 TDs
Jerod: 3552 yards 63.5% completion 29TDs 8Int 853 yards rushing and 12 TDs.
I just wish him the best, hope it works out for him. I hope he can generate some hype at pro days and combine.

edit: out of sheer curiousity, I googled Grant Noel just now....I think either he or his mom edited his wikipedia page...
"During the 2001 season, he took over the starting job and had a successful year leading the team to an 8-4 record. However, this was considered lackluster when compared to the 11-1 record the Hokies had the last two years (1999β2000) with Vick. He was blasted by fans on Internet message boards after the Hokies lost four of their last six games. Despite his above-par play, fans blamed him for the Hokies' poor performance at the end of the 2001 season."

Tahj Boyd was short and fat (by NFL QB standards). More like an out of shape Russell Wilson than Jerod who may not be prototypical height, but is still actually tall enough to see receivers in the NFL. This is what they said about Boyd after the combine:
Not exactly a ringing endorsement (nicknamed "Fat Boy", "he is the type you look to replace"). The only similarities are playing mostly from pistol/shotgun and both being good runners. Isaiah and Bucky were fantastic but Jerod also wasn't propped up by NFL talent around him like Boyd was (Watkins, Hopkins, Allen, Bryant, Ellington, etc.)

There's nothing awesome or terrible about it. It's just Mel Kiper in January. What matters is draft day - and that's a long way off and Mel Kiper doesn't draft anyone.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I was recently thinking how funny it is even to watch Kiper on draft night. He's got his projections and lists of what a team needs, who the best available are, and then he names some guy from a big school that's a top prospect, and the team drafts someone we've never heard of from a D-II school. Then ESPN scrambles to find a highlight for that guy.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Anybody who thought he'd go undrafted was putting way too much stock in "expert" rankings that weren't even considering him as a draft possibility. He might have worked his way into the first with another year but his stats and size alone will get him drafted in the middle rounds this year.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
I put stock in him not being able to connect on more than a few deep balls all season. Hope he gets drafted and has a great career, but being a NFL QB is about being able to make all the throws and there is nothing to suggest JE has accuracy on deep balls on film.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Why is this a shock to people? I don't get the "he'll go undrafted" crowd that popped up when he announced. The NFL is desperate for QBs. They barely have enough starter level QBs and the way the CBA has limited practice time, they damn sure don't have good back ups out there. That's why teams are drafting any raw QB talent they can find hoping its a diamond from the get go. For crying out loud, Cardale Jones, who was/is pretty damn raw for a NFL QB, got drafted in the 4th round despite having roughly 3 good college starts and losing the job to JT Barrett. Like I said when Evans made the announcement, I think it was a mistake to go if he expected to be a day 1 or 2 prospect. He's not polished enough. But he'll get drafted. He's just going to have to work a lot harder for a roster spot than if he stayed a year, polished his game, and was drafted higher.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
To be fair I think most assumed he would get drafted, the question is whether he could improve his stock by staying another year. Big difference in that $. Plus there's also that question of fizzling out, he's probably a project for whoever does take him given his lack of progressions and accuracy on the deep ball.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Also 101WT I don't see that see the great skill difference between Evans and the "top tier" QBs. I live in ACC country and have seen Trubisky, Watson and Kiser all season and I wasn't blown away. I personally think Jerod will work his way further up the list. Maybe I have hokie colored shades on but I don't see the skill separation.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Of the three you mentioned, plus Evans, I'd put Evans 3rd out of 4.
Watson throws a better deep ball, is taller, and is much more sudden quicks-wise. He's truly dual-threat. Evans isn't.
Trubisky is much more NFL ready in that he's more comfortable stepping up into the pocket and throwing (which is still a highly valued skill for The Shield) - and unlike Jerod, he can make all the throws. I've seen nothing that tells me that JE4 can make that opposite-hash, outside shoulder 15-yard (really 30-35-yard) throw. Trubisky can.
Maybe I've only seen Kizer play poorly - and his stats say that he's a pretty good player - but I just don't understand all the love he gets. Makes horrible mistakes. Looks like a player who switched to QB once he arrived at school.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Folks think he could go undrafted because he's a decent amount shorter than listed, his downfield arm strength is well below avg for an NFL QB, his mechanics are inefficient, and his pocket & route progression skills are fairly rudimentary (and showed only marginal improvement through the 2016 season).
And also his biggest assets - tenacity, run ability, accuracy in the short/medium pass game - aren't particularly valued or unique in the pro game.
Could he get drafted? Sure. Will he get drafted? Not so sure.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
His bread and butter in the NFL is short/medium range throws. They went almost two full calendar years without a TD pass to a WR.
I'm not making a case that he should go number one. I think he'll go 3rd or 4th round. I hope that he'll get picked by a team with a good QB who is willing to take him under his wing. To me, Philip Rivers and the Chargers (or whatever they'll start calling themselves) feel like a great fit for him to get what he needs and a chance to start in the not so distant future
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
Good grief. Evans is not going to be drafted by a team in the low rounds to "learn for a couple years" and then replace their starter. Guys like that get drafted to hopefully be a cheap #2 or #3 for a few years. If lightning happens to strike, great. But it's not part of the plan.
The NFL is not a developmental league and low round QB picks don't get a couple of years to learn. They either show pretty quickly they can a viable option in event of emergency or teams move on to another cheap, low rd pick.
He's likely to get drafted by a team that has a backup(s) nearing the end of a rookie contract.

I saw it. My point is your hope is pie-in-the-sky - and frankly probably not a good thing for him because it likely means the numbers game is more difficult on a team like that.

He will get drafted 4th or 5th rd. The Prescott effect if nothing else. 5th rd and later are flyers anyway. No way man. You gotta be able to throw the ball past 15 yards in the NFL. Evans can't do that. Mitch is gonna be a great qb though.
I don't think this is the 15-yard pass Koastal is referring to. I think he means the "15-yard frozen rope across both hashes" variety.
We all know he can throw it a long way. Usually too long. His lack of touch on deep balls is well documented.
Yeah, and that's about it lmao. He just doesn't have the accuracy and poise in the pocket to be a high draft pick. I can't wait to come back and read this stuff when Jerod Evans becomes the next Drew Brees. )))
Oh me too! I would love for Evans to become the next Brees. I will eat my words in a heartbeat...but I don't see that happening.
Well that's it. This one gif confirms that Jerod Evans is a more than capable thrower down field.
Trubisky should be a great QB as long as he never plays in the rain.

Getting paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to workout, practice football, play preseason, and then carry a clipboard on Sundays with a slight chance of actually having to play? Sounds good to me.
Somewhere Tyrod's ears are burning as he counts the almost $7 million he made this year
Oh I'm not saying he made the wrong decision. It's to his benefit to make that money. I just think he'll need extra time to develop in the pros.
I agree with you. He definitely needs time to work on the skills of his position and I really hope he gets picked up by a staff that will work with him.
I distinctly remember the year The Bills picked Ej Manuel in the first round. So anything is possible with the right team when it's a weak quarterback class.
As long as the Browns have a first round pick, any QB has a shot
A shot at getting drafted, if nothing else.
FTFY
And Christian Ponder...
He landed Sam, so he's a winner in my book.
A friend told me they met via twitter which means Ponder's DM game must be strong.
Add to that a solid work-out and a good combine and his stock could rise a bit. I think he'll be just fine.
Thats awesome. I was sad when Evans declared not just for the Hokies, but also for him if it doesnt work out. I'm alright with the Tahj Boyd comparison, if it includes the quarterback that followed him (and I don't mean Cole Stoudt).
Covered your tracks well with the edit.
Yeah. He's pretty easily forgettable as the Glennon to Watson's Tyrod.
Grant Noel might be a more apt comparison.

4 completions on 14 attempts with 4 picks? With that stat line maybe we should blame the defense for losing by 2 to Miami that year...

well, I'll give old Grant this: he never lost to LOLUVa despite all his other failings.
I wouldn't use that comparison to insult anyone who doesn't go to UVA.

Do yourself a favor and watch the draft on the NFL Network. Mike Mayock >>>> Mel Kiper
Has to be somewhat promising after McShay has him outside his top ten. Kiper is usually pretty good at calling the order of what QBs are taken.
I really, really hope Jerrod is a day two pick. I want to see him ball out on Sundays.

Hokie positional roundup:
Evans - #6
Bucky - #2
I Ford - #7
Sam the Hulk - #1 (Fullback)
No defensive players listed.
Had hoped clark would get some hype at safety.
Ford @ 7?!?!
7th ranked WR. Probably puts him in late round 2 or round 3 with a weaker WR class.
Sam is an interesting case. He provides so much versatility but he's not a very good blocker.
If I was to guess, I would think his future is in coaching sooner than later. But I would imagine Sam Rogers has a history of exceeding expectations.
