Gut Reactions: Western Carolina

Virginia Tech Hokies football, basketball, athletics blog and forum featuring: unique columns, breaking news, film studies, in-depth analysis, recruiting, videos and jokes.

That was an early afternoon filled with empty calories, beer, bourbon, and blowouts. I walked out of the Georgia Dome last week disappointed, but not upset. "What if we..." The Hokies played the Tide tough, effort wasn't a question, but they were far from polished.

The Hokies showed progress against Western Carolina. The only major snafu on special teams was the normally sure handed Kyshoen Jarrett mishandling a punt (one in which he didn't get bailed out by the officials). Credit Frank Beamer for tightening up Pride and Joy by playing starters like James Gayle, Kyle Fuller, Brandon Facyson, and Dadi Nicolas.

The passing game looked sharper than last week. Yes, there were drops and bad decisions, but eventually Thomas settled into a groove, Josh Stanford and Willie Byrn each made a nice catch, and freshman Kalvin Cline distinguished himself as something other than a fashion icon. Thomas and Knowles tried to connect on the deep ball a couple of times, which given their skill sets is something they should combine to do very well, but didn't hit on. Perhaps it will happen when they really need the points.

All four of Tech's tailbacks showed a little (or a lot) of something. Depth was a concern at the beginning of August, but the position has filled out. J.C. was only in on one drive (I'd assume the coaches are bringing him back slowly), but he looked terrific. He had runs of 6, 9, 8, 2, 5, 3, and 5 yards on a 9 play drive. It was like watching a different running back. He made some sharp cuts, saw the field, and flowed into the creases. It won't be long before we see him burst through a seam to the end zone.

The defense suffocated WCU. The d-line rolled two-deep and harassed quarterback Eddie Sullivan. Although, to his credit Sullivan had a couple of long gains on the ground. Keeping track of the quarterback on the option is something Foster will have to clean up before Marshall. The secondary is vicious. They hit, attack the ball in the air, play inside the box, and on an island.

I'm cautiously optimistic this season. The potential, scheme, and want-to are all there. It's going to be a fun ride.

The receivers seemed to just lay it out there more this week, and the catches they made showed.

Now the godzillatron, he needed a good yelling at after the game, going all Blue Screen of Death on us in the 3rd quarter.

Willie Byrn looked good out there today at WR. Silly question, but did he play against Alabama? I don't remember seeing or hearing his name called in that game.

He returned a punt or two, I think the first one that he fair-caught.

He played the entire game. He was in as the motion/pitch man on the triple option where Edmunds scored against Alabama.

I didn't know Danny Coale could change his name and gain another year of eligibility. Seriously though Byrn looked good and that catch on the far sideline.... Felt like the Sugar Bowl but the refs got the call right.

My thoughts exactly. That made me very happy to see.

Listen, I don't want to be a mood killer, but despite the fact that the receivers held onto the football, I didn't see guys getting quality seperation compared to the level of defenders that the Catamounts rolled out. Even though they held onto the football, there is a ton of work that still needs to be done. And, even if the receivers are executing perfectly, they will struggle against good defensive backs because they just are not particularly athletic.

Cam Phillips will start next year, and I would not be suprised if Knowles and Meyer are pushed to the side and Stanford, Phillips, and Harrison are the starters.

I'm sure you're right French. Looking forward to your and Mason's full analysis. Just wanted to put a positive spin on things. And glad to see Danny still open!

Logan admitted he should have thrown to the back pylons on both of his interceptions. I like the fact he is self-diagnosing his mistake, but he also said it wasn't bad decisions. I will need to see film to see if I disagree.

My favorite play of the day was seeing Sam Rogers catching the ball, and then juking/smacking poor DBs that helped set up Trey's 2nd touchdown of the day. The kid is gonna be a star. Hell, every time he catch the ball, a butterfly is born.

I support Logan Thomas and make no apologies for it.

Glad to see the self-diagnosing, I think because of the nature of his throws that they were timing routes and he was expecting the speedster knowles to be more open, or to hook back like an inside shoulder throw. I think Knowles is too small to be physical enough to push a DB off and make those kinds of catches. All in all bad decisions and bad effort.

I was disappointed in Knowles for at the very least failing to prevent an interception on those 2 passes. On that second pick, he just let the DB slide right in front of him. He's not huge, but neither was the guy covering him. He needs to go up and fight for the ball.
On a happier note, I was glad to see DJ get himself a score. Great play design, beautiful pass and a solid route/catch. Great to see after a subpar performance in Atlanta.

Neither was a great throw, and the decision to even try it at the end of the half was poor game management. But, you would like to see the receiver diganose the throw and undercut the defender on the route. Knowles had a chance to do it on the almost INT before the field goal against Bama, and he had two chances to adjust to the ball today. 0-3 will get you sent to the minors real quick.

hahaha WILLIE! i love him

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

I think for the offense, the big thing is just confidence and execution. The system is still new and the WR's are very young (except DJ who saw limited time and Knowles) and a procedure penalty shows that. The more throws LT gets to his receivers, the better the chemistry and the better they will grow. I am not surprised by a more heavy passing attack as LT needed to throw more and the receivers definitely played better. My biggest gripe was that both QB's threw to a tightly covered receiver and twice resulted in an interception. WIth LT's two interceptions I was disappointed with the throw but also disappointed that Knowles got boxed out so easily and seemed to make a lackluster effort on the ball. Bad throw, bad effort, two INT's. Other than that, seemed very typical for a young offense in a new system.

On the 2nd interception, I felt that Knowles didn't battle for the ball the way past receivers would, but again it's because Knowles is still relative new to the position.

I support Logan Thomas and make no apologies for it.

I agree and I think he just isn't a big guy. That second interception, the replay showed the defender literally boxing him out and knowles just kind of watching. The only reason Leal's deep ball wasn't intercepted was because parker made an over the shoulder play to make sure it was picked off.

I can see why Logan threw those 2. He saw he had one of his playmakers one-on-one with a (supposedly) inferior defender, took a shot and trusted his man to make a play. He didn't throw the ball as well as he should have and his receiver didn't bail him out as well as he should have. I liked the idea a lot, but they just didn't pull it out. Thomas has to throw that ball another yard or two to the pylon and Knowles has to at least make pretend he's a DB and break that up.

In NCAA, those easily would've been TDs!

On that note, the fake dive-HB toss is probably the only play I've seen us run in the last 5 years that works as well live as it does in NCAA. That made me very happy. Also, newsflash, Mangus is fast.

I have to disagree. I can never get good blocking on that play. What difficulty setting do you use?

Really? On a 3rd and short with everyone bunched up in the middle (or on the goal line), that's what I always check to. And I use All-American (no, I don't use Heisman, so call me a scrub. Who cares? I lay 70 on UVA annually).

I play on AA with the sliders pushed up. Heisman is just unfair- I can move the ball on offense until the red zone, but the opposing QB is unstoppable and their RBs every 10 plays or just can't be tackled.

I've noticed that the main difference between AA and Heisman is that your guys just suck. WRs drop everything and no one can tackle.

I play Heisman. but if you do sliders on that mode it's impossible. if you leave it at 50 you will get used to it. But yeah I guess I never use it on goal line situations. I. never get good outside blocking even on AA. Maybe my game just doesn't like that play lol. I.usually get about 7 yards a play with the WR option/Read option. Or counter our of shotgun ace set.

I thought I would never be good at Heisman but you just have to play slightly smarter and take less risks.Kinda like Logan needs to

It's going to take time to develop the chemistry for those kind of throws to work. Work in progress...definitely better, still needs work but it will be ok as long as the D keeps performing

I'm glad you all feel differently, I was pretty upset with the decision on the 2nd INT. I'm going to blissfully yield the floor on that one.

It was an execution-dependent decision. If he's gonna attempt that throw, he needs to make the throw and/or the receiver needs to beat the defender. Neither of those happened and the result was an INT.

I am by no means an expert, but it looked like on Leal's deep attempt the defender just barely turned around. I didn't really see Parker make any sort of defensive effort other than trying to catch the ball. Definitely could be mistaken, but that is how I saw it.

YES! 3rd and one, and we convert with a very nice push up the middle on a couple of occasions. On the 4th and one, my buddy asked me if we'd see Thomas the tank engine, and I said no: inside zone. We saw an inside zone with great blocking and a nice run by the TB to convert. We got a push against an inferior opponent. For the first time in about 7 years, we got a freakin push against an inferior opponent. All hail Jeff Grimes.

Who else was impressed by Joel Caleb at RB? He made that one TD run look easy - sort of glided / walked in. Also seemed to possess good catching ability coming out of the backfield (Trey did well too).

I definitely agree he looks more comfortable in the backfield I like having him and mangus at TB. Screen game is potentially a big weapon

Caleb looked sooo smooth on that TD run! He was weaving between blocks and defenders all the way to the endzone. It looked like he has good vision and great body control on the few carries he had today, and I look forward to seeing more of him.

What a great day- I was a little freaked out by the sobriety check heading home on the blacksburg rd, but the day was awesome. (Not mention the ducks hanging 59 on the French .)

J.C. Little guy must have a lot of power. Made a hit on a defender that dent the defender out for at least a play. for 190 lb that had to be some kind of hit.

I was concerned at some of Logan's decisions. He said they weren't bad decisions but let's be real. Demetri Knowles is not a physical receiver and he's not likely to out muscle anyway in the corner of the endzone for a touchdown. He should TRY, but it's just not as likely as Coles. Speaking of which, he didn't see much action till the 2nd quarter. I liked that. Not because I want to see kids suffer, but I want/like to see some discipline from coaches.

I'm still loving the way Edmunds ran. He's not afraid to get hit and we missed that a lot last year. He runs north and south. Coleman looked nice, him and Mangus are great compliments. I love it. If they can steadily improve week in and week out then we will be tough to beat in mid October through November.

I'm not going to lie, Eddie Sullivan impressed me a little bit. He can make plays with his legs when he's in trouble. I believe he had most of the 'mounts rushing yards.

With that being said, ECU isn't going to be a cake walk. Here's to a good week of practice. Go Hokies!

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

+1 props for Sullivan. He played well against the best defense in the nation. I think the general consensus is that Edmonds is #1 but we have great complements behind him in the running game. I'm sure when we reach the acc schedule we will have a more defined running philosophy than we had today. In the pressers Lefty talks about game planning which is foreign to me, but today was about getting some practice and confidence. I'm staying positive.

Highlights of the day. Note, as predicted, both the offense and defense were VERY vanilla today.

1) Terrific defensive back play, and a new defensive concept, a 46 defense with a nickel back. The Hokies essentially completely took away the strong side of the passing formation, and Kyle held down the fort on his island. It will be interesting to see how this approach works against better spread teams.

2) Young depth continues to develop in the defensive front seven. Those guys will be counted on as starters. Chase Williams will be counted on in a leadership role next season, and he looked terrific on defense and special teams.

3) Running back has gone from a position of weakness to a position of strength. Coleman, Mangus, and Caleb all were impressive. I loved Caleb's power. He looks much more natural at the position than I expected. I also thought Edmunds ran hard, but I didn't think he was seeing holes develop as well as he had against Alabama. He left some yards on the field, but man, he is tough on short yardage.

4) Special Teams coverage was excellent.

Room for Improvement
1) While the offensive line got push, I think they struggled to adjust to the smaller, quicker defensive front. It almost seems strange to say "quicker" but Alabama plays assignment football where the DL ties up blockers. Western Carolina shot the gaps and there were plays where the OL seemed a step slow. I also saw too many plays where the OL wasn't finishing blocks and disengaged to watch the end of the play. The injury to Miller is a challenge, because now if one more guy gets hurt, the Hokies will have to play someone who Grimes was not counting on to contribute this year. Mark Shuman (if healthy) will take over the utility guy role, but Brent Benedict playing tackle is a scary thought. (Guard fine, but he just isn't quick enough at tackle.)

2) As I noted above, while I was happy that the wide receivers improved, if DJ Coles isn't a factor, then Josh Stanford is the only legitimate ACC wide receiver on the roster. WCU's secondary is terrible, and was missing their best defender, yet the Hokies could not consistantly get behind it. Against good secondary play, the Hokies will have to execute perfectly and dink and dunk their way down the field, which is a style that isn't the best fit for Logan Thomas.

3) The defensive front was decent, but their tackling was shoddy early, and they were exposed against the read option. We will cover it more in the film review, but spread teams where the QB can effectively run the read option and get up field will be tough for the Hokies to cover. If they protect against the QB, seams open in the middle. The QB today had more opportunities to run and made poor reads. WCU potentially could have had much more time of posession.

4) Logan was better, but still needs to improve. Again, this receiver corps is not suited to his strengths. If Knowles can't get open deep, they don't have a vertical threat.

5) The punt return team was absolutely atrocious today. Jarrett made numerous poor decisions beyond the muffed punt (which he was interfered with.) If that is what they can muster, put Byrn there and fair catch everything.

More detail to come in the film review, which will highlight the "nickel 46", a review of the running backs, and commentary on the young defensive players who contributed to the win.

Immediately after Windmuller's punt was downed on the 1, I received a text from my dad that Windmuller's the son of the Corps' Regimental Commander my dad's Rat year ('76). Pretty cool.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

I believe he's also the nephew of Dennis Windmuller, a defensive back, who played in the '76 to '78 time frame. Not sure if he lettered in '76 though. Unfortunately, he passed away a few years ago. He was happy-go-lucky stand-up guy as I remember.

I have very similar thoughts for the receivers. None are athletic enough for the typical deep ball. It doesn't matter how good the QB is. The receivers have to be athletic enough to adjust to the ball and defense. To compensate for the current crop of VT receivers, I think Loeffler will have to find ways to get deep crossing routes open. Crossing routes are typically much easier for receivers to beat corners and to adjust to the ball. So, if Loeffler can find a way for the receivers to cross behind the safeties, maybe they can have some resemblance of a deep threat.

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

That's exactly what our OL guys said about their DL being smaller & quicker than most teams, also the LB were more DB size & quick, tough to block in the open field.

They also said that on a few plays that WCU DL were confused & had not lined up properly & that in turn screwed VTs' blocking assignment call, I thought that was pretty funny.

Minority Report.

Except for picks.

I can't be sure without reviewing the footage, but weren't the two picks from beyond 20 yards?

Yes, they were both deep balls.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

Benedict playing RT was pretty funny considering people were lamenting someone on here for saying that he should play tackle. He seemed alright til Miller got hurt then I could hear Grimes yell "LAWRENCE!" and then he played RG with the rest of the 1st team.

Speaking of coaches yelling for people, Moorhead called over Dadi and was going to put him in on third down, but Edmunds scored on 2nd down, so I'm guessing we will see that Dadi fade route sometime this year.

RT against Western Carolina isn't the same as RT against a team with talent. They could probably get away with it in an emergency but if there were long-term injuries they would likely pull the shirt on Teller or Osterloh.

I think they were just trying to do something new. I was honestly confused why Gibson wasn't out there in the first place, but my guess is Grimes wanted to see how well Benedict reacted at RT. But I think it's pretty obvious he is the backup for the two guard spots.

I will say that i was pleased with the production from the offense....for the most part. What concerns me the most though is our inability to strech the field with the deep ball.
I also was somewhat disappointed with the lack of separation between our receivers and their d backs. I think they actually covered us much better than Bama did. Given the difference in the talent level.....i think that is unacceptable, and should be an area of concern going forward.

TN_Hokie

I think we will learn more about our passing game against ECU. I watched some of the FAU-ECU game this week, and ECU's secondary looked fairly porous. Hopefully we can translate that into separation for our WRs and some rhythm with LT. If we can do that, the run game opens up even more, which is already a strength.

"Exit light..."

I sure hope so. I certainly dont want these teams loading the box to stop the run....simply because they dont respect our passing game

TN_Hokie

Although our WR's still need A LOT of work on catching the ball, one thing that I have noticed is much, much better: Blocking. They did a good job all day long. Mangus' score was on a beautiful block from Knowles who tied up his man the entire time. If that was Davis last year it would have been a loss of yardage.

Excellent point. They do seem to be taking the blocking assignments a lot more seriously this year.

I definitely thought Mangus should have been hit for a loss but the LB who tried to make the play took the wrong angle. Either that or Mangus hit another gear right before that. Was hard to really tell, but he burned their team and earned that TD.

He leaned and hit that extra gear. As soon as that guy missed it was endzone the whole way for him.

I hate games like this, because unless you really blow out the inferior opponent you don't really learn anything about your team. The D definitely did their part in a blow-out. The O? Not so much. They took a quarter to get going, scored 38 points against arguably the worst team in their division, and hardly dominate the LoS. So we'll have to wait til ECU to gauge how good our offense really is.

Reality has a mighty pimp hand.

While I agree, as many have said our offense was extremely vanilla yesterday and we probably didn't crack the surface of the playbook. Granted, the execution of the plays we did run wasn't all that great, but the extra practice on those bread-and-butter type plays will pay dividends later in the season.

Look at it this way we have 2 more open practices before the season starts.

A new season...new hope

You're absolutely right. Some will say we need to win those games. But honestly they don't matter. We could lose and still win the ACC. I'd really like to see us take a significant step each week (and win, of course) and open up the playbook a little more each game. D looks good. O need consistency and to find their personality.

We put the K in Kwality

I think we need to win the next 2 for the confidence of our team. If we go into ACC play 1-3, having lost to ECU and Marshall, I would be concerned that our guys will not have their minds right for conference play. Or maybe they'll come out like rabid honey badgers, I don't know. I think winning both of these next games is important for offensive cohesion and team confidence.

"Exit light..."

A new season...new hope

"Exit light..."

Meh ... Vegas had us favored by 41 and we won by 42. So I'd say things went pretty much as expected.

Remember, also, that there's a mental game to it. Considering the opponent, they showed up wanting to prove something, and so they all played their hearts out. Our team went in knowing it was a pushover game, and probably didn't give it their all, even if they meant to. Even the coaching staff seemed to be playing the game as a "learning and growing" experience, than a full out game. Another thread here spoke of people leaving the game early...now, I watched it from start to finish at home, but that didn't mean it felt like a real game. Even to me, I felt like I was watching a scrimmage, or the NFL preseason.

I thought it was good for them to go out there and do what they did, because there have been more games in recent past where games were closer, or felt closer, than they needed to be because our offense couldn't even perform in these weak games, but still went on to win games against opponents they shouldn't have.

Regarding the long ball, I am more than okay with some Dink-n-Dunk offense until we figure out who can go long consistently. D-n-D plus a good running game is the ultimate clock killer, and combined with our defense, could do wonders for us.

Are you Bill Walsh? But yes, Logan and this offense may be best suited for a WCO style offense. Although, Logan will need to improve on short touch passes.

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

It's interesting how in the preseason the long ball was seen as Logan's strength and the short yardage passing needed work. The short yardage accuracy seems to be improving, but now he's over/under throwing the bombs. I don't know how much the receiver play into this but it will be interesting to watch as the season moves on.

It's not Logan, it's the wide receivers. WCO covers up for a lack of speed at the WR position. Exhibit A: Jerry Rice.

For the record, Logan throws a pretty good long ball. It's the faults of the wide receivers for them being incomplete. Watch any NFL game. The wide receiver is ALWAYS making the QB look good. For example, the Victor Cruz TD that just happened. The ball looked like a beautiful pass, but it was Cruz who adjusted his speed and route to make sure he caught the ball in stride. It helps that he burned by the safety at the start of the play...

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

The receiver has to adjust, but the QB has to give the receiver a chance to make a play. LT doesn't do a great job of that.

Knowles needs to get feisty. He isn't fighting for the ball like he has to be. The balls were underthrown however he still needs to make a play for the ball. I felt like both of those passes Saturday and especially against Alabama were plays that he just wasn't aggressive enough.

β€œI hope that they’re not going to have big eyes and pee down their legs so to speak,” -- Bud Foster

Offensive PI is only a 15 yd penalty...an you get to keep the ball! WRs should be taught if you can't car h the ball...better damn well make sure the other team doesn't. (Obviously within the rules).

That being said...Logan has to give him a chance to make the play.

We put the K in Kwality

We simply have to stop dropping catchable passes. I counted five drops against WCU.

Now of course, to be fair. there were also some very nice catches of balls that nobody could have complained about had they not been caught. Stanford nicely laid out for one over the middle and the over-the-shoulder sideline catch by Bryn was a thing of beauty.

So the overall WR play was better than it was against Alabama. But there are still too many drops. A dropped pass is often the difference between 3rd & 2 and 3rd & 8, which winds up to be, in turn, the difference between a drive continuing and the punting team coming onto the field. I won't even get into Kline's drop of a sure TD pass that hit him right in the hands.

We're moving in the right direction, but we still have a long way to go.

Yeah but it doesn't help that Logan's lack of accuracy coupled with him throwing every 5 yard pass as hard as he can. Remember Sam Rogers catch in the red zone? The announcers were amazed that he caught that ball, and he was wide open and it was a short pass. The fact that he needed to make such a great catch for such an easy pass tells me something about the qb's touch and accuracy... Logan's total quarterback rating is 121 out of 123 out of all quarterbacks currently.

  • By lack of accuracy, do you mean
    complete

lack of accuracy? He gets the ball there better than I could.
I thought Sam Rogers was just doing what he was supposed to do. Didn't really look extraordinary to me. What was wrong with the receiving corps that they didn't get it done in game one?
Logan does throw a hard short ball. His professional receivers will catch them. Maybe if he were shorter...
Wonder how many of those 120 QB's in front of him are 2 and 0 going against non-Alabama's? I look forward to next year's quarterback battle. I think it's not a stretch to predict that the 2nd stringer now doesn't start.

It's important to remember that Beamer doesn't run the score up on mediocre teams for the sake of running the score up. Beamer uses these games as learning experiences for the players as well as coaches. It's like trying to predict an NFL team's regular season record based on the preseason. Obviously QB play has to improve, WR has to improve, but it is a work in progress with a new offense, new coaches, etc. It will take time.

Lot of work to do, but I think this team is capable of winning the ACC. Definitely capable of winning the Coastal. I'm not sure about GT, but UNC and Miami have not impressed me thus far. I know Miami beat Florida, but that was at home, and that Florida offense...damn. Just damn. UNC's win over Middle Tennessee was pedestrian at best.

Leonard. Duh.

I saw improvement. That's the main thing, but we still have work to do.

Logan looked better this week. I didn't like the two pick. I know he said he just underthrew it but I was watching the WR on the first pass and he was never open, even a perfect throw would have essentially been a jump ball. We don't have the athletes at WR rigth now to make those type of plays though.

The one thing I'll say I didn't like is that we looked like we came out just a bit flat. Not as bad as past games against cupcakes, but it took an interception to get us in it. A three-and-out and INT on the first two offensive posessions against a team like WCU is not how you want to start that game.

Regardless, I think we learn a lot about our guys against ECU. If we can run them out of their own stadium that would be a great sign.

I think Logan overthrew those two passes to Knowles, because he overthrew him against Bama. I'd much rather he overthrow and have Knowles sprint after it, than have Knowles try to fight for it. Most obvious statement ever: Knowles just isn't the physical type of receiver.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

Does anyone know what the spread is going into the ECU game???

TN_Hokie

Opened at Tech -7 now is -7.5

UVA: Jefferson's biggest mistake

@pbowman6

-7.5 Really?!?! I was expecting around 14-15...
Thank you though.....

Given the recent history between these two teams, the 7-point spread sounds pretty accurate to me. ECU has a heck of an offense and we have a heck of a defense. They have a porous defense and we have an inconsistent offense.
