OT: Ted Cruz Kills Deadspin

I know Cruz is a politician, but this isn't really politics-related. Regardless of your feelings about him, these responses to Deadspin were absolutely incredible.

If the mods think this is too political you can delete it, I just thought it was hilarious and the whole world should see Deadspin's apparent death.

I mean, I think it was a bad move to show that your doppleganger in NCAA basketball is Grayson Allen. I would've chosen someone better liked, like Christian Laettner.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Yeah, comparing yourself to Grayson Allen is almost a self-burn

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

My wife showed this to me this morning. I believe that this comparison has been made before, so Cruz didn't just make it up for this response. Brilliant, though!

Yea, finding Cruz doppelgngers has been been a thing for awhile, he just owned this one and used it perfectly.

Rip his freaking head off!

I'd characterize this in no way political, and in all the other ways f'ing hilarious OT. Saw this last night and I was dying.

@hokie_rd

Cruz's twitter team was on top of it.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Wow, they're tanking. And only in the last few months. Any idea as to what is going on?

I don't know if that's sarcastic or not, but it's probably because right before the election they went really political instead of focusing on sports. It definitely turned a lot of people away. Their sports stuff can be good, and usually people like reading about sports because they can stop hearing about things like politics.

Rip his freaking head off!

When Gawker went bankrupt, it probably didn't help.

@hokie_rd

Could also have something to do with whoever running their Twitter account being unable to take a joke

I just checked their twitter feed, and the second thing on there has absolutely nothing to do with sports.

I like what these type of comedy/sports sites try to do, but none of them do it without being unnecessarily political. Deadspin is just the worst example of this. I refuse to give clicks to Deadspin or sites like it.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Quick and dirty version:

- Deadspin was under the Gawker Media umbrella
- Gawker Media got hit by a lawsuit from Hulk Hogan over a sex tape
- Verdict came down this summer, Gawker sold themselves to Univision in August(?)
- Gawker.com shut down as a result, and the rest of their sites (Gizmodo, Lifehacker, Kotaku, Deadspin, Jezebel, Jalopnik) started trailing off a bit.

thank you

Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies

Not to mention that even though the Gawker domain was shut down, the primary Gawker contributors simply kept writing the same articles with the same content and began plastering the sister sites with them. I used to go to Deadspin, Gizmodo, io9, Kotaku on a daily basis, but just can't take it anymore with the constant mixing of articles that would have been contained on Gawker previously. It's driven a lot of people away.

The fake UVA article annoyed me, but this is really funny.

Hard to fit in a basketball career when you're so busy being the Zodiac Killer.

Saw this last night and lost it!

Fire Whit.

I saw that on the responses and couldn't remember if you were on TKP or not.

Rip his freaking head off!

Saw this last night and thought it was so hilarious. Of all the politicians I would never expect to be savvy to internet humor, he would have been high on the list. (also aware he could have had little to no part in this, given the widespread use of social media teams)

Additionally, to those who are unaware, it is a pretty widespread joke already that he looks exactly like Grayson Allen or that Grayson Allen is his secret son.

Grayson Allen Cruz's son? That's trippin'.

**refrains from joke not worth the downvotes**

Always choose joy.

What's most funny is that Deadspin has been taking the lead on banging the "Ted Cruz = Grayson Allen" drum for the past year, and the second he throws it back in their face, they respond like whiny children.

Been following the downfall of that site and all of Gawker Media as a whole for a while. Their writers might be the most out of touch delusional twits I've ever seen operating, and that's saying something. They posted the Hulk Hogan sex tape and kept it up despite a federal court order to take it down. They also posted an article for the sole purpose of outing the sexual orientation of someone from a rival news agency for the sake of outing them, and then turn around and get self righteous about society not treating LGBTQ folks with the respect everyone deserves. And to this day they still think they're being unfairly targeted by the rich elites when they're being sued out of existence for the acts demonstrated above.

I mean shit, they get bought out by Univision, and the day after they get bought out, they run an article that basically tells those who run Univision to fuck off and let them run their site as they see fit. I'm really not surprised to see them falling into the shitter like they are. I just hope it doesn't bring Jalopnik, arguably their only good site, down with them.

I love Deadspin. And frankly, I really don't see how Ted Cruz owned, pwned, killed, or destroyed deadspin. This joke is like two years old and his responses weren't that original.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

He won because he got them angry. Usually the first one to get mad loses an argument.

Rip his freaking head off!

but what if you are just mad normally, you know like lewis black?

Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies

Obviously, if you can get Lewis Black to respond calmly and quietly, you've won, or perhaps stunned silence would be a better benchmark. But I don't see anyone ever winning that battle. Dude is high-strung and hilarious.

“You got one guy going boom, one guy going whack, and one guy not getting in the endzone.”
― John Madden (describing VT's offense?)

I would almost be more afraid of calm, quiet, reasoned response from Lewis Black. Sorta like when you pissed off your parents so much that they didn't yell, just told you how disappointed they were. Quiet is dangerous.

I told him I’d crawl on my hands and knees to be the DL coach at Virginia Tech. Now, all of a sudden, I’m sitting in this chair and I told him I’d still crawl on my hands and knees to work here. I just want to be here.

his initial joke isn't funny. his response isn't terrible original. However, when juxtaposed with a juvenile, unfunny response from Deadspin, it makes his look witty and well timed.

I prefered deadspin's response

I thought they were doing what they did with Trump a few years ago.

Getting reeeaally close to the line of spawning an inappropriate sub-thread.

My bad, I just mean their response (to me) was funnier than Cruz's.

I know what you were referencing, but I think Trump on twitter is much different than Cruz on twitter. So if their plan was to create a similar situation, it was flawed from the start.

Rip his freaking head off!

However, a stuffy, crusty hard-lined conservative's use of a Ron Burgundy staple deserves at least a little love.

You can't let your personal politics get in the way of that fact.

Leonard. Duh.

100% this. I'm definitely not the biggest Ted Cruz fan out there, but he's clearly representing himself better on Twitter than Deadspin is at this point.

Maybe none of those things, but he clearly struck a chord with someone for them to respond back with "eat shit." That looks really bad on them to me (but maybe not to their core readership). He was simply playing along with a joke that they have helped perpetuate, and they get butthurt about it.

Most people's enjoyment with this is not about any actual "owning" and way more about how funny it is that Ted Cruz, of all people (even if it wasn't technically him, we don't know), would respond in both an internet savvy and self-deprecating way. Then after they responded like a pissed off child, he hit them with an Anchorman gif. The whole exchange highlighted the attitude of the bully who loves to take shots, but when their bullying (for lack of a better word) doesn't work as intended, such as the target responding in a humorous and self-deprecating manner, they get upset and just lash out. Anyway you look at it, it makes whoever was running the Deadspin account at that time look like a little bitch.

That makes sense, but it was just deadspin being deadspin. It wasn't really out of the ordinary for them.

Jesus Christ

Normally, I frown on anything even remotely political, but this is in no way political. The butt of the joke is Deadspin.

Senor Chang says:

In completely unrelated news, Manti Te'o made a sizable donation to the Republican party today. /s

I always wonder in these situations whether it's actually them or their social media team that handles these interactions. In spite of what some people think of him for political reasons, I don't find it that hard to believe Cruz did this himself, but who knows.

Can we add "Fuck Deadspin" to the TKP pantheon of "Fuck (person we dont like)?

I'm not sure they're even worthy of that.

I mostly don't think of them at all.

how about "meh deadspin" instead?

That, I can get behind.

After Hulk obliterated Gawker, this belongs in here, somehow.

The next thing you know somebody will tweet about Cruz's wife...

Don't let this distract you from the fact that Arkansas blew a 24-point lead.
