OT: Best Actor to Play Batman

We have debated Pie and Cake for many moons on this site. Now we have another debate! Who was the best actor to dawn the cape!

For me it's a no brainer. Michael Keaton hands down will always be my Batman. I thinks it's just the straight up way he played the character, without the shitty voice cover up that Bale uses. It might be that I saw the movie in theaters at the ripe age of 5 and can still remember it like yesterday. I don't know I just grew up as Keaton as my Batman.

I will say that Bale was an excellent Bruce Wayne and Affleck was a great combo. Neither of them touch Michael Keaton thought!

Adam West.

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

Keaton

Bale in Batman Begins is the best Batman. Unless you're counting the Animated Series Batman then Kevin Conroy runs away with this. I love Michael Keaton too though. I thought Affleck was easily the best part of the movies he's appeared in. A lot of good options here, people. Can't really go wrong.

Can't really go wrong.

George Clooney would like a word.

Granted, Clooney was not a good Batman but those movies are so bad that they are hilarious to watch. The level of campiness is so over the top that I somehow don't hate watching them.

Willing to give Affleck more time. I've enjoyed his take on the character so far, and seems really similar to the portrayal in the Arkham video games, which I think are superb.

keaton as the every day man batman was damn good, but man bale and how they set up the trilogy was so, so good.

I didn't even realize people considered anyone other than Christian Bale.

That same goes for Pierce Brosnan as Bond.

That same goes for Pierce Brosnan as Bond

golden eye was probably one of the top 2-3 games ever for n64 (and the movie was awesome) so i always just assumed it was brosnan for anyone born after about '85, but looking back some of those movies were just ridiculous.

I also agree with Bale, I thought keaton had some fairly cheesy lines/roles as batman(admittedly i'm fairly young) and if bale's voice was considered over the top, then affleck was just ridiculous at points, though idk shit about movies

I was born in '88. Connery is far and away the best Bond.

I would say in order from best to worst:
Connery
Craig
Moore
Brosnan
Lazenby
Dalton

Onward and upward

really, you think dalton is worse than lazenby? I mean, once I got over the fact that I'd only ever seen Dalton as a bad guy, I thought he was up (down?) there with brosnan.

honestly, they're interchangeable for me

Onward and upward

Born in '92 but my father sort of instilled the Bond movies into me when I was young. Bond was one of the first movies I can remember seeing. Good List but probably would switch Daniel Craig and Roger Moore even though its pretty damn close to a tie though. Connery will always be the classic Bond though

perfect dark was everything goldeneye was, but better (at least for multiplayer)

Right there with you.

On the topic of Bond, did any of yall watch The Man From Uncle? It's my favorite "feels like a 70s Bond movie but really isn't" flick I've seen in a long while.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

yep. Loved the throw back style and really hope they crank out more of them (since they left the door way open for that).

Brosnan?

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

God I hope you're trolling. Sean Connery IS James Bond. I'd also entertain arguments for Timothy Dalton, given that his Bond is closest to the one in Fleming's novels.

Pretty hard to overlook Roger Moore too. I got him at #2 behind Connery. Roger Moore was a pimp. I wanted that damn white Lotus submarine car from The Spy Who Loved Me.

1. Connery
2. Roger Moore
3. Brosnan but only in Goldeneye
4. Everyone else

Not even up for discussion

It's not that I am not a fan of the other Bonds its more along the lines that when I think of James Bond I think of Brosnan.

I can understand that. Goldeneye was probably my first bond film.

I get it as he does come to mind when I think of Bond because he was my bond growing up, but at the same time I do know that Roger Moore, and Sean Connery do exist, and have seen some of their movies. Personally I lean towards Connery, because he is the man, but I can't exactly chose between the 2 because it was out of my time.

I do know this though! Roger Moore or Sean Connery trump Brosnan as Bond.

What's
Important
Now

When I was a kid, Roger Moore was my favorite Bond. But now, his movies just seem so damn cheesy and he's much more of a playboy than a superspy. I really wish Live and Let Die had been a Connery movie. Would have rivaled Goldfinger and From Russia With Love as best Bond flick.

George Lazenby, hands down /s

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

Having read the actual books; Lazenby, Connery and Craig are in a very close tie with what Ian Fleming had in mind.

HTHokie93

Lazenby moreso than Dalton? Everyone shits on both, and it's undeserved, but Dalton's Bond, to me, always seemed closest to the book character.

Dalton was pretty close too. Pretty much the ones that while they could certainly womanize, also, if it impeded the mission, had a very hard edge that could be turned on in an instant.

Craig in Casino Royale pretty much nailed it.

HTHokie93

Daniel Craig is my favorite Bond. Simply because I like my spy movies toeing the line of realism instead of being completely over the top.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

Wholeheartedly disagree. Daniel Craig was more of a mission impossible type character instead of Bond. Bond is over the top, thats what distinguishes it from other spy movies. Iconic over the top villians, elaborate plots, practically criminal womanizing, and gadgets = all the makings of a bond film.

I do enjoy the slightly more realism, but that being said I've only really been around for the Pierce and Craig 007s...Pierce's (looking back on it from 2017's perspective) was comically over the top and the Craig 007s kinda poke fun at that at times. But I think Craig's movies were homeruns or strikeouts. Casino Royale = homerun. Quantum = meh. Skyfall = should've been a walkoff grandslam, buuut they went and made Spectre = wtf was that? Anyways....Val Kilmer anyone? Lol...jaykay. Keaton for coolness, Bale for badassness.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

4. Craig
5. Lazenby
6. Connery in the knock off Bond movie from the 80s
27. Whoever played James Bond Jr in that shitty tv series
...
...
489,658. Moore

Roger Moore was like 60 when he played Bond. No. Nope. Nuh uh. No way. Watch the space scenes from Moonraker and come back and tell me Moore was a good Bond.

Sean Connery. Definitely the best Bond.

Daniel Craig was also an interesting take.

The rest were fine, if you insist on a bit more campiness in your Bond. If that's the case, Roger Moore was pretty good.

Best Joker...Heath Ledger

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

Mark Hamill, and in my opinion it's not really that close

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Animated films, hands down.

Live action, Heath.

I'd say even his work on the Arkham video games was top notch Joker. I think he was motion captured for those, but I could be mistaken

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

ahh...I've actually never played any of the Arkham games. ...which is weird considering how much of a Batman fan that I am.

Guess I'm just more of a comics and movies guy when it comes to the Dark Knight.

If you want to get a feel for how Mark Hamill would play the joker in live action, check out him playing "The Trickster" from the TV show The Flash. The best part of that role was this though:

And yes, obviously I need to lay off the Netflix because I'm watching some rather average programming.

That is blasphemy! Netflix is love. Netflix is life.

as long as you are steering clear of the straight to netflix sandler films then you don't have a problem yet shore.

"...I am your father..."

Yeah, I fangirled when he said that

Heath Ledger owns The Joker.

He made that character his own, and changed the way we look at the character forever, regardless of who else plays it.

Mark Hamill, and in my opinion it's not really that close

Mark Hamill is an animated cartoon voice.

That's not remotely the same category.

Before the movie came out I was like "no one will ever top Nicholson," but damned if he didn't pull it off.

If you play it, they will win.

"How the ass pocket will be used, I do not know. Alls I know is, the ass pocket will be used." -The BoD

I'm not sure you can really even compare Nicholson vs Ledger here. The Joker is presented as such a vastly different character in the two films, and frankly I think both actors gave equally great performances for the totally different roles.

Oh we full offseason now.

I refuse to actually answer the question because Marvel > DC

I do agree with the MC>DC, but it's Batman > all other Super Heros. He is the original comic book hero!

What's

Batman is not a super hero. He's rich, talented, gadget-laden HERO, but not super hero.

I know, symmantics semantics

Edited

Batman is the best detective of all time, he is extremely smart. I think kids growing up idolize him because of exactly your thoughts. If you had enough money and you were smart enough you could essentially be him. He is also more human then another Super Hero because he does not have a real Super Power.

What's
Important
Now

I know symmantics

Fixed (with my mistake crossed out)

If by saying Batman is better than all other superheroes, you are excluding Spider-Man from all other superheroes since he is clearly the best superhero OF ALL TIME, then I will not contest your opinion.

I don't care if he's the first. As my wife says about my cooking, just because you've been doing it a long time doesn't mean you're good at it. Batman's good, but Spider-Man is the best.

Agree Spiderman is the best, especially of the big 3. I also believe firmly that superman is the lamest, least creative, and most boring superhero of all time.

Agree with Superman being the lamest, but there is one part of Superman that people tend to forget.

He is an alien that views the human race from an outside perspective. He could kill us all and essentially rule the world if he wanted too, but he chooses to let them live.

Also Clark Kent is lame by design, essentially he is so dull and boring when he isn't superman, that his glasses give him the ultimate cover-up.

What's
Important
Now

Spiderman is extremely lame as Peter Parker. Both Tony Stark and Bruce Wayne are rock stars away from the suites and in them.

What's
Important
Now

Superman is lame because he's boring and his powers make it too easy for him to beat 99% of what could come against him. Kryptonite and other alien superbeings making up the other 1%.

Peter Parker may be a nerd or "lame" if you're judging him by if he was cool in high school or not, but that's not what I'm saying. Peter Parker has flaws, deals with actual issues instead of being a stoic super alien that bullets break against his eye and he can fly around the world in a second or whatever. Peter Parker has to be more creative to win fights other than stand still as 99% of things have no affect on you. Peter Parker's relationships with other characters are also significantly more entertaining. In addition to his super powers, he's also a really smart kid, well studied in science, this makes him a much more interesting and versatile character as well.

Spiderman and captain America have the same flaw for me in that I really don't know the limits of their power. One second they are being hit by a bus and fight on, then they get punched in the face and they pull a Rick Flair face plant.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

DUDE. The alternative Peter Parker persona is one of the best parts about Spider-Man. This average guy gets stuck with these amazing powers and has to juggle a regular life and his enormously guilty conscience while trying to protect his city and loved ones. He's the relatable every-man, way more so than a filthy rich Bruce Wayne/Tony Stark (who are both kind of d-bags, but, to be fair, in a "They're OUR d-bags" kinda way) or an alien pretending to be a dork by wearing glasses.

Also, without Peter Parker, we wouldn't be getting Marisa Tomei in the next Spider-Man movie. AUNT MAY UPGRADE UNLOCKED.

Superman can be interesting. Check out All-Star Superman, either the movie or the collected volume of the comic run. But yeah, for the most part I agree with you.

"...When we step on that field, they bleed like we bleed and we're gonna show the world."
-Corey Marshall

I've always preferred Iron Man over Batman. Its not his fault his villains are garbage compared to Batman's. He has the same, rich, smart thing going but actually creates the gadgets (suit) himself.

DC and Marvel for the most part rip each other off. Ironman = Batman Superman = Captain Marvel Dead Pool = Dead Shot etc.

What's
Important
Now

Deadpool was a play on Death Stroke (hence the name)

You are correct. Sorry I mixed that up.

What's
Important
Now

Batman also creates the gadgets himself, at least in some variations of the character. I see them as the same type, like you. Difference is that Batman could kick your ass as Bruce Wayne if it came to it. Iron Man? Not so much. Also, batman's gadgets are only just beyond reality and that makes them more fun whereas Iron Man's stuff is so far outside what is currently possible that it seems more like fantasy.

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

to play devils advocate...

pretty sure superman could kick butt as Clark Kent....

Nah, he's a total nerd. Just look at the glasses.

While I don't disagree with Batman being awesome, I have to disagree with the "original" part. First, Superman predates him. And, Batman was ripped off of several other characters, including the Shadow. In fact, the first Batman story blatantly plagarizes a Shadow pulp story.

Live action movies, yes. Marvel has figured out the formula to success.

Animated films though? DC shits all over Marvel, and it's not even close.

Very well said. I remember when Keaton was announced to be Batman and everybody thought it would be a flop. He pulled off Batman well. Sadly, he struggled a little with Bruce Wayne, but they also wanted a dark Bruce Wayne.

Keaton also brought some soft touches of comedy to the movie that it kind of needed. Like the dinner scene where they are at the giant table. That was Keaton's idea.

What? No love for Clooney and the nipple suit?

I bet those puppies can cut glass

You know... I think he gets a bad rap for that. The writing was terrible but I think he did the best an actor could do given the circumstances. And I can't fault him for taking the role. If you're offered to play Batman you say yes, same as James Bond.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

When someone asks you if you're a God, you say YES

...i dunno, your comment made me think of that.

If you're offered to play Batman you say yes, same as James Bond.

Let's just all agree that from 95 - 05, the writers did neither of those franchises any favors.

(GoldenEye being the lone exception)

So Clooney sucked, but it wasn't his fault.

You may be right about that, but that may also be true of many performers and performances.

Uma Thurman is my favorite Poison Ivy.

Uma Thurman is my favorite everything.

Leonard. Duh.

I never thought of Poison Ivy as interesting until Uma Thurman.

I have to say, she made me rethink that.

I think much of the distinction lies in the different characterizations of Batman, which is largely the realm of the writers and directors rather than the actors. Adam West made sitcom Batman a hit, Keaton fit perfectly as a Tim Burton Batman, Nolan's films were actually about Bruce Wayne and Bale sold that vision perfectly. But when I think of Batman, I think of the character Ben Affleck plays. And he's done it far better than I could have imagined. So while I loved the other three versions named, I'm rolling with Batfleck on this one.

I'm not really a fan of the Affleck batman, because i wasn't really a fan of that batman to begin with. The Dark Knight returns movies weren't that great in my opinion.

The older, battle worn Batman that kills... not a fan.

I just really like how he's being portrayed as a more complex character. More moral ambiguity. Almost an antihero. Deeply flawed. It comes off as making the character more human. His motivations for doing batman stuff aren't exactly virtuous. And the Batfleck version does a better job of making Bruce and Batman almost two distinct characters. It's a more complex Batman, and it's been done well.

I don't really have an opinion on batman but Jared Leto was a tremendous letdown as joker. I never bought into the hype. People lost it over his brief apperarance in the trailer and I never understood that.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

While suicide squad was awful, and Heath Ledger's joker was the epitome of chaotic evil and badassery, I actually have high hopes for Leto as Joker.

The Joker I grew up watching as a kid (in the animated series) was skinny and effiminate. It made for a very scary and chaotic depiction of the character. I also like the gangster additions to his character as it adds a new spin. I think he can be a solid Joker. But Suicide Squad was terrible outside of Harley Quinn and Will Smith's character.

i was in denial for a couple weeks after seeing Suicide Squad. It was so bad. So so bad.

I was expecting a live action Assault on Arkham. ...I wouldn't even know how to describe the product we got.

the new rule of thumb is, if the production company tries to convince you that the extended version of a movie is better than what they sent to theaters, then both suck.

Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies

But...the extended versions of the LOTR trilogy are better....

but the extended versions of LOTR were not a reaction to people hating the original versions of the films. Also I swear my bladder thought Return of the King was the extended version when i first saw it in theaters. That movie would just not end.

Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies

I'd have to give the nod to Bale. 2nd for me would actually be Val Kilmer even though by that time the movies had become laughable. Close 3rd is Keaton. Michael Keaton did play a badass Beetlejuice though.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

Adam West and Michael Keaton are tied.

Bales movies were great more because of the stellar supporting actor work than anything he did (and I think he is a good actor.)

The bond movies my dad would rent for me were mostly Roger Moore, Connery, Brosnan, and Dalton for two(?) movies. I like Daniel Craig too, but I don't immediately associate him with Bond to the degree I do with the others mentioned.

Batman, I liked Bale's movies the best, so that skews my view. I also think Bale is a terrific actor, though he doesn't get much opportunity to show it in those movies. His quality is revealed in movies like American Hustle. I like the old Batmans too (West, Keaton, Clooney), but was never invested in the comics enough to know who was staying "true" to his character the most. I think Affleck is a really good actor as well, and I expect him to be a solid Batman, though I didn't see Batman vs. Superman because I heard it was awful. I figured I'd get around to watching it once it was out of theaters, but still haven't done so.

Conroy, Keaton, Affleck, Bale, Kilmer, West......................................................Clooney.

Bale was the best in my book but that could have been because Christopher Nolan made three masterpiece movies that so happened to be Batman Movies. If you want to start a whole pie > cake war. I'll just say this Batman Begins > The Dark Knight

Two masterpiece. The Dark Knight Rises was a mixed bag and a bit of a mess.

I was going to say the same thing. Dark Knight Rises was....eeehhhh

Rises was still a good movie with great characters but I thought the timeline was what made it such a mess. I mean the city was basically taken hostage for months.

I think we could debate that the best Batman is also part of the best Batman film.

For example, Keaton was great in Batman (1) which was a great flick, and precendent to what followed. I didn't like Batman Returns as much, even though he did play a good role. Christian Bale in The Dark Knight is my other favorite Batman- and arguably the best Batman film.

3 way tie between Keaton-Conroy-West for me. Followed by Kilmer. Yes I loved Batman Forever. Still getting used to Affleck but did enjoy BvS.

I'm really looking forward to the Affleck-directed Batman movie.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

Val Kilmer was an alright batman. He was really just a dry character both as batman and Bruce Wayne. His movie wasn't terrible, but it began the downturn of the movies.

Don't let that distract you from the fact that Nic Cage is the goat.

I've seen that documentary (insomnia's a bitch sometimes). Interesting to see all of the craziness that goes into making (well at least attempting to make) these blockbuster films. Interesting quote from the IMDB Page for the documentary

Facepalm-worthy mistakes abound, from overzealous producers with absurd requests to tripped-out directors with no affinity for the character to one of the single worst casting decisions in recent memory. There's no two ways about it: this was going to be a launchpad disaster, even worse than the slim shreds of leaked information may have led us to believe. The story of its abortion is fascinating, too, in the same way a slow-motion replay of a fatal F-1 crash might be.

Why would we argue about that stuff we all know the answers are Moes and Pie. So not that we can clear that up easily enough.

Well, I'm with you on the Moe's part anyway.

You seem to be not as good with movies as you are with desserts.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

I'll go off the radar here and go with Jack Smith as Batman in Andy Warhol's Batman Dracula.

This entire thread went the wrong way at the intersection.

It bothers me that Ann Hathaway's character was NEVER called catwoman. She also never made any real connection to any cats. No claws. I reject that she's catwoman

she is a woman dressed up like a cat, what more do you want?!?!

Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies

those are goggles, not cat ears.

No claws. I reject that she's catwoman

Back in the day when Anne and I dated; I asked her not to wear the claws. I had no medical insurance.

Well, she's a cat burglar, wearing a cat suit, and cat ears. I dunno man, the implication was clearly there so it didn't need to be so obviously stated. She's duck girl.

Now THAT'S closer to what I was talking about!

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Well, for me Christopher Reeve and Keaton will always be on a pedestal because they were the OG's in my lifetime. My mom took me to see Batman in the theatre when it came out, I was 8 years old and I still remember how much awe I was experiencing when he first appeared on screen. Also, at even 8 years old I knew I liked what I saw in Kim Basinger so you can imagine how it was when I was older and saw 9 1/2 weeks...but I digress.

Bale was the best to me until Affleck, I like how Affleck portrays him and I think it's accurate. You gotta think, at this point we're in now Batman/Wayne have been in the game for what? 15-20 years? He's not going to have a whole lotta fucks to give anymore and most likely has PTSD like you read about.

I'm not always interested in GIFs, but when I am, it's usually the ones deleted by the Mod before I saw them.

Just Google Alicia Silverstone Batgirl and check out the images.

I didn't think I broke the rules, or I wouldn't have posted the closeup leather pics. Sorry about that!

While fully clothed, I made a judgment call that close-up imagery of a woman's leather-clad crotch, breast, and butt was not appropriate for TKP. Too much questionable stuff lately so we are taking a hard line.

Just wanted to say sorry one more time!

Alicia Silverstone is as attractive as she is crazy.

It's confusing for the senses.

This is y'all.

Affleck is pulling out of being director on "The Batman". The signal is up for a new director!

after seeing how batman v superman turned out, color me shocked

Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies

The director of Batman Vs. Superman has been canned and Affleck was going to direct the film which everyone thought was a grand slam because he is one hell of a director. Affleck felt he couldn't do both effectively. Rumors circulating that they might get David Fincher.
