Once more unto the breach, a breaking pack line we must go
Buzzketball goes back on the road tonight after surviving a three point savant shooting performance. Boston College made the Hokies earn all of that win. The Hokies now run into the anathema to offense that is the in state rival Cavaliers. UVA is in position with a win tonight to take over the top spot in the ACC. They come in having lost a buzzer beater heartbreaker to then #1 Villanova. Prior to that they were on a five game glide through ACC play. Their only other losses this season have been at the hands of the Cousins, Florida State and Pitt. The Pitt game I chalk up to a hangover after losing to FSU on a three with four seconds left. The Wahoos have wins over Iowa, Ohio State, Cal in their OOC slate and Louisville, Wake Forest, Clemson, Boston College, Georgia Tech and Notre Dame in the ACC.
Third away game in a four game stretch for the Hokies, most likely to a sellout crowd at John Paul Jones Arena, and the Wahoos smarting from a loss after having as much as a 15 point lead over Villanova. The Hokies need to be ready right out the gate to execute their offense effectively. This is not the opponent to let get out to an eighteen point lead, because they will slow the game down enough that there will be no hope of getting back into the contest.
This will be the One Hundred and Fourty Fourth meeting between the Hokies and Cavaliers. Virginia leads the all-time series 89-54. Last year, in two games, each home team won one. This is also a critical matchup in the Commonwealth Clash, with UVA currently out in front due to Swimming and Diving victories.

The Wahoos are coached by Tony Bennett, who has been at Virginia since 2009. His first season the Cavaliers won 15 games and have progressively added to that each season until having two 30 win seasons back to back these last two years. Bennett has been a great success guiding UVA to four NCAA tournament appearances, including an Elite Eight last season. He also guided them to an outright ACC Championship both in regular season and tournament in 2014, while also being the regular season Champ in 2015.
Defensively, UVA uses the Pack Line Defense which is a high pressure, man to man defense that sags to the middle of the court. It is designed to prevent penetration by driving the basketball. The "pack line" is an imaginary line two feet inside the three point line that all defenders not guarding the current ball handler are never supposed to be outside of. The defender that is on the ball handler is expected to be up close, hand in face to create turnovers on the outside. One other critical aspect of this defense that is different than most is that it's designed to deny the baseline. Defenders are taught to position themselves to not allow any baseline penetration, relying on help defense to close down an adjusted drive to the center of the lane. At the top of the post, expect to see defenders attempt to position themselves somewhat in front of the opposing offensive player to prevent the easy pass to the top of the lane.
Offensively, the Cavaliers run what is called a Block Mover Offense on the other end of the court. This is a variation of the Motion Offense, allowing the primary ball handler at the top of the key to attempt to use a screen provided by one of two lane personnel near the top of the key. At the point of the screen, the ball handler decides either to drive the lane, kick out to an open shooter or attempt a down low pass to their second lane player, who usually moves across the basket down at the baseline block to create space for the driving guard. The defensive rotation is what drives the guard's decision making process as he assesses what is in front of him. The guard essentially has three options coming off the pick or can spin back out to reset for another play. The key for the Hokies will be to limit the times where we allow dribble penetration by Perrantes or allow a clean pass into the lower lane player for an easy layup.
What does that mean for the Hokies?

The Hokies are getting an opponent with a very similar offensive approach and in terms of size. Now they must find a way to beat the ACCs top defense. Last season they were very successful in the home matchup because Leday was able to do just about anything he liked, even hitting four three pointers. This year, the Hokies are a much more balanced team scoring wise, so I expect even with the road game they will be able to find open shots against this mainly zone defense.
The Hokies need to take a page out of most of the UVA losses and get to 60 points on the night. The Cavaliers are a meager 3-4 when their opponents reach that magic number. This will require finding open shooters and being able to get to the rim against the UVA bigs. One critical aspect to this game could be how often the Hokies are able to get to the free throw line. The Cavaliers are currently allowing opponents an average of 15.75 attempts at the line.
This is another game where the Hokies need to run, run, run, to keep the Cavaliers off balance. The Wahoos make more mistakes as the tempo increases which means pushing the pace, and getting the ball out in front on the fast break before Virginia can close in with their stifling perimeter defense. They do however need to do so in control. They cannot afford a flurry of lost possessions from getting a stop and throwing it right back away. There will not be enough chances to score tonight so squandering them that way could be the difference in the game.
Cavaliers Backcourt

London Perrantes (#32) 6'2, 197 Lbs Senior Guard is averaging 11.9 PPG, 3.2 RPG, and 3.9 APG. He is shooting 42% from behind the arc and 45% overall. London is their do everything guy this season. He is definitely their top defender and should be matched up with Seth Allen most of the evening.

Marial Shayok, (#4) 6'5, 196 Junior Guard comes in averaging 10.2 PPG, 2.6 RPG, 1.2 APG and 1.1 SPG. He is shooting 34% from outside and at the free throw line, shooting 78%. He is better known for his quick first step and ability to drive inside. So far on the season he is shooting better than 47% inside the arc.
![]()
Devon Hall, (#0) 6'5, 207 lbs Junior Guard is averaging 8.2 PPG, 4.2 RB . His shot outside the arc is going in at about 40% while inside the arc it drops in at to 45%. He is a terrific free throw shooter as well, hitting from the line at an 84% clip. Hall will likely be defending one of the baseline corners for most of this game.

Kyle Guy, (#5) 6'3, 165 Lbs Freshman Guard is averaging 7.8 PPG 1.7 RPG and 1.6 APG in a backup role across 17 minutes per game. So far this season he is shooting 46% from the field, 46% from behind the arc and 78% from the line. Considering how well he scores, he could see extended minutes this evening which will make for a wonderful competition tonight. Who would you rather see get a haircut between Guy and Perranted

Darius Thompson, (#51), 6'4, 196 Lbs, Junior Guard is averaging 7 PPG, 2 RPG, 2.7 APG and 1 SPG. This is Thompson's second season with the Wahoos since transferring from Tennessee. He has gradually improved across almost every aspect of his game this season, and will likely take over from Perrantes next season.
Cavaliers Frontcourt

Isaiah Wilkins, (#21), 6'7, 225 Lbs Junior Forward is averaging 7.1 PPG, 5.9 RPG, and 1.6 APG. Wilkins's interior scoring is at 52% and perimeter scoring is at 57% on very limited attempts. Just to round things out, he shoots just under 74% from the free throw line as well. Wilkins is the primary big operating the center of the UVA offense. This is the Step Son of Dominique "The Human Highlight Film" Wilkins.
Jarred Reuter, (#31) 6'7, 243 Lbs Sophomore Forward, Mamadi Diakite, (#25) 6'9, 214 Lbs, and Jack Salt, (#33) 6'11, 247 Lbs Sophomore Center combine to provide one more spot on the floor for the Cavaliers while also backing up Wilkins when needed. They combine for 13.5 PPG, 9.3 RPG, 1.4 APG and 2 BPG.
Names the Announcers will Butcher
Really only one candidate this time. Mamadi Diakite is the winner.
What to expect from Virginia?
The Cavaliers rely mostly on their defense to limit opposing teams scoring, as we touched on, they have only allowed opponents above 60 points in seven games this season. Those are the games they struggle in though. Expect the Cavaliers to cause early turnovers by confusing the Hokies in terms of passing lanes and where the defense is coming from on the floor. UVA is excellent at back side help to keep the ball out of the basket.
Rebounding is also a huge key to Virginia's success this season. They slow the game down so much that they give up the 3rd fewest rebounds on the offensive glass and 4th fewest overall. Opponents average only about 20 rebounds per game against UVA. This doesn't translate to the Wahoos getting a ton of rebounds though as they are above 328 in offensive and total rebounds as a team.
They usually don't shoot often from outside but when they do, they have the best shooting percentage in the ACC from outside at 43%. Seems like a recipe for disaster waiting to happen.
Perrantes drives the train, so if he isn't having a top performance than UVA is going to struggle.
UVA is allowing the fewest points per game this season at 53.7 on the fourth fewest shot attempts by an opponent in the nation. Such is the result when you have total team buy in to the style of defense that Tony Bennett utilizes. This is the epitome of selfless basketball, because many of these players in someone else' system would be putting up dramatically better numbers.
The Hokies
Tech needs to go fast again in this game. The standing around on offense has to stop or they will really struggle to find open shots against the Wahoo defense. This isn't a team the Hokies are likely to get tired since they utilize so many guards so being able to beat them down the court as often as possible is critical to their success.
Collectively the Hokies need to be able to step into three pointers to keep this defense spread out. If they are unable to do so it allows the Wahoos to do exactly what they want which is to pack the lane and make scoring down low that much harder. This is a case of team performance more so than any one shooter.
Score, just score, get to 60. Keep yourself in the game Hokies by hitting your shots like you have all season.

In Closing
Whoever wins the pace battle of this contest likely wins the game. If UVA is able to slow things down and keep the score really low than the game plays to their strengths. If the Hokies can speed it up and keep Virginia off balance a bit than the Hokies stand a good chance of winning this contest.
Don't expect to get to the line but don't stop driving inside to add to the offense. UVA does not foul much so the Hokies must count on playing stellar defense to balance out this game. A telling factor to this game will be if either team can managed a significant difference in made free throws.
This is not an absolute must win considering the Hokies are on the road and still control their fate in terms of conference record and overall record to lead them dancing. It still wouldn't hurt the Hokies to keep up the success by keeping UVA from becoming the top team in the ACC.
Hokies win 69-67 on a three at the end of the game, leaving UVA looking up at the top of the ACC and a great rival win under their belts.

Can anyone find the game on Comcast in Blacksburg? Or am I gonna have to listen to the game?
Looks like WatchESPN or radio, unfortunately.
Huge bummer. WatchESPN has it blacked out in Blacksburg so radio it is.
Woah, that's a hell of a preview.
via GIPHY
Need a solid game from Leday and not necessarily in terms of points. Will be tough going inside but needs to battle hard and be smart with his paint touches.
This is not a must win for our tournament chances, but every game vs UVA is a must win. Let's go Hokies
Game is on WDBJ 7 in roanoke, blacksburg area.
1. I hate London Perrantes and hope Seth Allen takes his punk ass to school!
2. ....Annnnnd worst man bun of the year award goes tooooo....Kyle Guy. Seriously. Some guys, can pull it off, this Guy can't.
3. I'm praying that Chris Clarke dunks it down someones throat tonight so I can jump off my couch and scream and scare my family.
4. Did I mention I hate London Perrantes? Yeah fuck him. And Pat Narduzzi. And Matt Ryan...anyone else?
Agree with the Perrantes hate but no guy can pull off a man bun. Its just not possible
To me, man buns range from HELL NO to meh...Guy definitely falls into the DOUBLE HELL NO category.
Anybody know how to stream this via Roku for a noob? I have the effing ACC network on Roku too but it doesn't have any live games. WTF.
Can't believe I have to watch this on a fucking computer. Better than the radio I guess.
can you provide a link plz? watch espn is blacked out.
Sorry, I'm on watchespn too. Very thankful it's not blacked out in Raleigh.
You're missing out on listening to radio games man. The announcers are expected to be totally biased. It's great.
Don't you have a normal computer?
All my computers fuck.
I wonder if Seth Dooley's computers fuck
I live in Christiansburg and its on WDBJ7, cbs. Guide just says something else.
Thank you. It is on here as well.
Sloppy start with 2 TOs already...
Rebounding is hard.
5 points in 7 minutes!?!? Cmon Hokies!
It is absolutely demoralizing to play 25+ seconds of great defense, force a bad shot, and then give up an offensive rebound. Too bad it happens to us 10-20 times a game.
It was annoying when we couldn't get a rebound, but now that we can't do that or guard the perimeter it's downright infuriating.
We have come light years since Buzz got here. Having said that, discouraging to not be competitive at all against good teams on the road.
In Buzz I trust. I'm just in my cups and hate UVA.
I also love Chris Clarke.
Let the boys play ref
I would send the ball into the post every time. Let them double
Beamer is on the team bench as an honorary coach.
Uva doesn't look impressive, we just can't get anything going.
we need to drive into the paint. over, and over, and over........and this will work out well for us. If we just sit outside, this will not go well for us.
Id like to see a Billdozer remake of the ACC "made for this" commercial but mocking their terrible acc network coverage
How I feel whenever I look at London Perrantes
Fuck UVA.
This
Not sure why we aren't just attacking the rim relentlessly. It's either a layup, a kickout to a wide open 3, or a foul nearly every time. It's one of the few ways to beat that packline D
There's a whole lot of not playing to our strengths going on recently.
We need to penetrate, it's the only thing working. From outside the arch we've got enough bricks to make a house.
OFFENSIVE REBOUNDS
This is getting fucking ugly.
No more Leday threes, please
It feels like this team is permanently stuck at down 14 against any opponent in the top half of the ACC. Wish we could just give somebody a game on the first half for once.
Seriously killing us because of offensive rebounding.
Alright!! 21-35, only down by two touchdowns!! Oh, wait...
These guys are allergic to rebounding. It's pathetic.
Every time we've attacked the basket, we get a good look or layup opportunity. We don't even need ball screens. Just straight line drives to the basket. Instead we pass the ball around the perimeter looking for a shot that is not there.
Might as well have handed the ball to UVA at midcourt every possession. Would have been about as effective as our shooting the ball.
Any idea why VT has been zone exclusive? I mean, this team plays pretty solid man to man d. But that all zone all the time allowed that one dude whose name I've repressed from BC to shoot 3833732 three pointers and a ton of easy looks today.
35-21. Sounds like a football score. Not that they'd know anything about that.
Absolutely brutal to watch. But I'll always watch.
same, I don't get to watch too many games because of where I'm at. So I watch every game that I can.
Offensive rebounds have been bad but whats killing us is our shooting. 27.8% from field, 16.7% from outside. Need it to be around 40% on both for us to compete here
I love Buzz and the guys on the team, but they just don't have the grit that they had last season.
Missing 6'10, 260 pounds of baby face too. Leday can't be the only one in the box for a rebound if Sy is going to be playing < 10 min a night.
I agree. Ever since that Duke win and then following it up with that disaster on the road against NC State, this team just hasn't had the same edge. It's like they've almost just mailed it in for the season. Don't see the same team out there.
I like Buzz but he needs to teach these guys how to block out. When we shoot the ball no one's following their shot. What the hell happened to Hill? This is painful to watch but as bad as it is we could still get back in this game.
Following your shot leads to layups for your opponent at this level. But we could definitely box out more effectively
We don't follow shots by design. On defense though its frustrating to watch Clarke attack the ball aggressively and nearly everyone else just stand around. It's like we don't understand to put a body on someone.
I hate to say it, but UVAs defense is just really good. If we could make a few shots we'd be in this game. But u can see the tentative look in our faces as we address that D.
In fact, our D could take a lesson from their D.
I HATE saying this, hope we figure a way to attack their D, then we have a chance.
I hope we drive to the hoop more this half. The 3s clearly were not falling but I thought we were successful drawing fouls going to the bucket. I might be crazy but I think we have a run in us to make this close in the 2nd half.... Or maybe just hopeful.
Seems that the team has regressed into playing outside-in rather than vice versa. Good things have generally happened when we drive the lane.
Gotta make the few open 3s we've had.
Clarke also needs to add two things to his game. Go up for rebounds with both hands and develop a outside shot. Every time he gets the ball outside the UVA defender is able to sag inside and clog the lane.
Hokies really need last year's ACC tournament Justin Robinson to reappear. He has looked like a shell of himself since the holidays.
French, are you still with Joe on his couch? I imagine you both, after all the events of today, watching the game and drinkin' forties.
as i said above...need to drive into the paint, over and over....
drive the lane, drive the lane, drive the lane
Robinson is never gonna be able to box out a guy that has almost a foot over him, but he's been fighting in there a few times though.
I find it funny that all these Hoos can show up to the climate-controlled confines of JPJ week after week in the winter to support this basketball team, yet are an absolute joke when it comes to football support.
Well to be fair the #9 ranking helps
Glass houses.
It's not like Cassell is on a multi year sellout streak
Kind of my point exactly. There is a stark contrast in sports interest at VT vs UVA. I think UVA hit a goldmine with building JPJ. It's the kind of luxurious feeling venue that will attract people with money not even really interested in sports. I've been there for a few games and it has a very big money/corporate feel to it. And I think Charlottesville feeds on that, Couple it with the fact that Bennett has built a solid team, and you have strong support for the basketball program. Even if we built a comparable facility in Blacksburg, I don't think we could get the same results.
A bit OT...did anyone else see that "Best Dressed ACC Coach" where Bennett had 60% to Buzz's 30%? I call BS, Buzz is way better dressed than Bennett. No bias whatsoever either.
It's not even close. I didn't even know Tony Bennett was considered well-dressed.
I'm so frustrated I'm getting mad at who's best dressed
Right?! I've watched plenty of LOLUVA games over the last few years (because I will admit begrudgingly they are fun to watch), and I've NEVER heard anyone mention Bennett as being well dress. Buzz on the other hand? Yeah his suits are almost always brought up in some form. #GoACCNetwork
I'm sorry I have to wholeheartedly disagree. I'm almost more entertained by UConn's women's team than UVA's men's
They are the most boring team in the nation. Milk the shot clock every possession and nothing exciting ever happens. My buddy who doesn't know a lot about basketball even made a comment about how boring it is to watch them.
I guess to each his own, but I think their tenacious defense is fun to watch. Just my opinion.
Honestly I don't think I would classify their D as tenacious. They lay back and try to make you shoot over the top of them. They do hedge screens really well but it's not like they are aggressively trapping or anything. As much disdain as I have for them, WVU has what I would call a tenacious defense. Those guys are aggressive and really get after it. That's a fun team to watch.
Perhaps tenacious is a bit much. I still don't wanna gouge my eyes out or anything when I watch them.
I understand your viewpoint. I just think they are enormously boring lol
Enormously boring? To me that's UCONN women's basketball. I'm not saying at all they are the most fun to watch, there are *plenty* of teams I'd rather watch before them. But fair enough, to each his own like I said!
Offense is exciting in all sports. UVA is 274th in the nation in scoring offense so far this year. Not saying Defense can't be exciting but when it's paired with that slow paced offense it's tough to get excited.
UVa basketball is about as entertaining to watch as GT football
In other words I'd rather drive a rusted metal spike through my temple without anesthesia than sit through 5 minutes of that misery
So you don't like watching the Triple Option? Yeah it's a royal pain the ass to defend against and it blows that PJ is the only coach in the country to run it, but I don't mind watching a GT game just b/c of their playbook...js.
Look at the ball. Not lying.
Shit happens
That's about all I gotta say about this game
Why in the fuck did Robinson pull that ball out on the fastbreak? 2 on 2 and an opportunity to speed LOLuva up a little bit. Instead we get nothing and WIlkins hits another jumper on the other end. Frustrating to watch right now. At least Allen is getting in the paint as often as he can.
Flailing at windmills
once again....as i said above...need to drive into the paint, over and over....otherwise this is over.
Other than the Outlaw jumpers that is what we've done. We just can't play a lick of defense.
Well this sucks, I was hoping to see something competitive.
Salt looks like the bad guy from a Rocky movie.
the Russian dude, ..not sure which one.
Rocky IV
Ivan Drago?
UVA's bigs are getting into foul trouble and all of the sudden the inside opens up more.
Need stops now.
I didn't expect to win this one on the road. But let's show some fight, make them earn it, and let them know this shit won't happen again next Sunday in Blacksburg
We're gaining some MO. Keep it up boys!
You jinxed it. Damn you.
Argh...
Just when we were making it a game..
9 point game to a 17 point game in a couple of possessions...
Why doesn't Sy play more?
He still looks lost honestly. Doesn't really understand the game well yet. Get's out of position a lot and that leads to foul trouble.
His minutes are in proportion to his value on the court.
Why the hell did buzz call a TO when we were on a 6-0 run? Now UVA on a 8-2 run since
I agree that was a weird time out, oh wellz
what the shit
The Hoo's are getting off easy tonight...we are playing out of sorts. No rhythm whatsoever from us.
Let em play!
I know this is going to sound negative, but we aren't a tournament team at all. When we play a team that is good, we look like a JV squad. Not to mention we (and I know there are technical reasons for this) are TERRIBLE on defense.
Simply put, our defense is horrifyingly bad and LOLuva's defense is too good to play that poorly on one side of the court. Clarke looks like the only one giving effort on the glass and that's just not acceptable play. Didn't exactly expect to win this game but I expected us to compete. We've got to find a way to get more stops down the stretch or we are going to struggle to get a tourney birth. This team has the talent. Here's to hoping we get them at Cassell because this is embarrassing.
I tend to agree. I like the way the program is trending with the exception of defense. There seems to be no interest in this team at all anywhere on the defensive end. Couple that with the fact that we have a terribly Jekyl and Hyde offense and this is the product we get when we face a good team.
Berth
I am done watching this stinkaroo. Our offense looks lost, looks like we will have to keep winning at home and hope for a road win at Pitt.
Did...did they just call a foul on Outlaw b/c the guy caught the ball on the rim and fell backwards?...
Rims. They'll get after ya
I am so tired of seeing Monday morning quarterbacks question the effort of this team. Clark and Leday are grinding against a rotation of big guys that all have them out-sized. We rotate down to help them and give up open shots. We play straight up and get bullied inside. Until we get some experienced health depth inside we are going to struggle.
We knew when Blackshear went out that this year was going to be tough. We should be excited that we are on the cusp of the tournament with a undersized scrappy team. When did we become the entitled fanbase?
Logged in on my phone just to leg you
I love your writeups, but unfortunately, I never seem to find them until the game is underway or the next day.
I usually aim to have them up about two or three hours before game time depending on how my actual workday is going. They never post to the main page as I am not on staff so you will always have to look in the active discussions section. I usually tweet the link out after I post if you are on twitter. I know several folks have my posts pegged for a notification when they come out on twitter.
I don't tweet. But wanted to drop a note letting you know regardless of when they come out, they are appreciated and read. You put a lot of effort into these write-ups.
Thanks
