So we have officially hit the worst part of the football year. When the season ends we can at least ride out the football high until NSD. During the stretch between NSD and the beginning of Spring Practice we can either curl into the fetal position and rock back and forth while youtubing the same old clips of Tyrod hitting Danny and then Dyrell against Nebraska, MV7 skirting the sideline to get us into field goal range at the Miracle in Morgantown, and remembering when "these people are losing their minds" in Lane... OR we can occupy ourselves by creating more discussion focused around massive speculations that will probably never pan out the way any of us actually expect. I for one will plan to do plenty of both.
So here's the plan. I want to take a look at why we win in 2017 and why we lose in 2017. Many of us tend to be a bit homeristic and always predict the best case scenario, while some of us tend to be a little bit more pessimistic and elicit the "debbie downer" moniker from our TKP peers. This will force us all to take a look at both sides. Now I tend to be a bad news before the good news kind of guy so I'll start with "why we lose" and then move to "why we win."
Why we lose
Defense: Off the cuff our defense may look to be in good shape with a lot of key/experienced players returning but there are some glaring problems. First off some of the losses could be more significant than we care to acknowledge. Even though we only lose one DB he's a significant one. The current proposed responses are to either shuffle the secondary up completely, or insert a completely inexperienced kid, and possibly even a true freshman, into Bud's coveted DBU.
Second off the losses on the D-line look to be very problematic. Currently, while very talented, we are paper thin at DT. If Vinny is forced to move back inside we are looking at a very inexperienced/unproved set of DE's (with the exception of Hill). Even so the 2 deep at DT is still looking sketchy.
Lastly and most importantly is depth across the D-block. There is truthfully no position on defense that we can say we are deep with viable players right now. Yes we have some talent coming in at LB and DE but most of those freshman will probably need a year or two before they are serious contenders. My big concern is with injuries. 2015 was a tough year for injuries on defense but in 2016 we were pretty fortunate. Our two DE's played banged up a lot but missed very little time. Stro missed a few games but has one of the more viable/experienced backups in the secondary. A DT missed a little time but our 2 deep was fantastic. Honestly an injury at any position in 2017 could leave us massively exposed.
Overall our defense doesn't look to be way down but I'm afraid we will struggle late in games on account of a lack of viable depth. However if a key injury or two happens things could end up being much worse.
Offense: The challenges on offense are pretty clear. At QB the only guy who has taken a snap for the Hokies is Jack Click and he has not attempted a pass. Most of us however consider the real competition to be between a redshirt freshman and a true freshman (holy feed em to the wolves Batman).
Now assuming JJ takes the job I for one am a little nervous. Last year Evans really leaned on one of the best WR trios in VT history when it came to the passing game and when it came to the running game he relied on his ability to hit LB's and fall forward three yards. JJ will have neither of these things. Cam is set up to have a great year but I'm afraid he will draw all the focus of opposing secondaries. I hope some other WR's will step up but nobody else did last year so unless somebody has improved by leaps and bounds since last year our receiving corps could be a one man show.
Unfortunately I don't see the running game improving much either. While we return Dragon we lose our bigger back options in Juice and Shai. D.J. Reid hasn't shown that he is ready for a bigger role yet and it's probably too much ask the true freshman to step into a significant role. So basically with no real positive additions or changes to the running game in 2017 I see no reason to expect anything different from what we saw in 2016.
Overall I see a definite dip in year two under Fuente. We can invent reasons to be positive all day but when it's all said and done it's impossible to not see some regression with the amount of talent we lost. Things should improve over the next year or two but I expect to see a lot of growing pains in 2017.
Why we win
Defense: Bud is back. Not only does he look rejuvenated with Fuente under the helm but his 2016 crew looks close to back to what our spoiled fanbase has come to expect. The best part is that we lose very little. Losing Chuck is tough but we have good options to plug that spot. Bud has always shuffled around his secondary to make sure he has the best players on the field and he'll do the same in 2017. However if Hunter can come in and be that immediate impact player then Bud wont have to do much shuffling anyway.
On the D-line we lose some key guys but the talent is still there. Our starting DT's look to be one of the best tandem positions on the field. Vinny and Trevon both have plenty of proven experience at DE and House got plenty of reps late last year. Several guys will have to step up in the rotation but it's hard to not be excited about the talent we have at the top of the depth chart.
Oh and how about those LB's? This is really the first time in a while that I haven't been worried about either of those positions. Not only do we have some depth coming in with this recruiting class but we have two very experienced very good players at that position. Tremaine improved tremendously over last season and we still aren't exactly sure how high his ceiling is. Motu still has to clean some things up but he still looked like a new man this past year. I finally feel like to don't have cringe every time announcers mention that Bud refers to him as "the eraser."
Overall with another year of experience our defense looks to be just as good and more than likely a little improved in 2017.
Offense: Yes we lose a lot, and yes that will be tough, but we aren't without genuine hope. While losing Evans hurts we forget that he was in his first year playing D1 ball last. JJ will be in the same boat except he has had a full year in the program learning the offense and the skills needed to succeed. Also I think many people are not giving JJ quite the credit he deserves since he doesn't have LT3 size or TT5 mobility. At the end of the day JJ is still a duel threat guy and from what we have heard from Fuente he has been on of the better passers on the team. The reality is we know Fu wont ask a ton of JJ (just like with Evans). If he can run the scheme, and protect the football we will win games (we all know the turnover statistics from last year and how they correlated to our W/L record).
As far as receivers go we certainly aren't without options. I truly believe that the ankle assassin has proven that he can carry the WR1 load. After him I am confident that some guys will step up. While some might worry about the fact that nobody really stepped up after Ford, Cam, and Bucky last year I feel that that was more a product of how good our top 3 were as opposed to how poor the rest of the WR corps is. With the amount of openings there are I expect some guys to step up and take advantage and impress us.
Another significant factor that many of us seem to have forgotten is that 2016 was only year 1 in a completely and radically new offensive scheme. Honestly though our offense was so improved it's pretty easy to forget. I for one can't wait to see what CornFu will pull out with a team that isn't completely green to what the coaching staff is trying to do.
Overall I expect very little if any regression. JJ is not Evans but that's not to say that he is worse than Evans. Fuente has said many times that he will adapt his scheme to the players he has. In year 2 of a more polished Fuenteball I expect a lot of games where the initial perception is that the offense hasn't been that impressive, but when we look at the scoreboard we notice that we have seemingly out of nowhere hung 35+ on the other team.
Phew... Alright so I know I'm long winded and you probably didn't read everything I wrote, but that's ok. More than anything I want to hear your thoughts?
Why do we win in 2017 and why do we lose in 2017?

Comments
Pretty solid assessment. I'm also hoping special teams play will improve next year with the influx of some of the speed we have in this class. While I don't expect a ton from the defensive freshmen in terms of actually playing on defense I bet a good amount of them don't RS and get their feet wet on STs as well as some of the more explosive offensive guys on KR/PR.
Henry Murphy takes one (or multiple) KR to the house. I'm very excited about what he can do.
Very well said.
I would like to go back and look at our depth Isaiah Ford's first year. I feel like off the top of my head we are in a much better position, talent-wise, on offense, but Id be interested to see what the defense was like. It feels like a similar off-season, a lot of questions, some optimism about the unknown, but they're are still some unknowns.
So to follow up - This is the WR Depth spring 14 before Philips and Ford came in.
80 Demitri Knowles WR 1-Jun 180 r-So.
82 Willie Byrn WR 10-May 186 r-Jr.
85 E.L. Smiling WR 4-Jun 211 r-Jr.
5 Joshua Stanford WR 1-Jun 196 r-Fr.
15 Joel Caleb WR 2-Jun 205 r-Fr.
83 Charley Meyer WR 1-Jun 215 r-Fr.
16 Carlis Parker WR 3-Jun 185 Fr.
Wooofff just in sheer size the difference is crazy.
Am I right to assume all the dates were intended as heights?
So Bucky is June 12th tall
More like November 26th.
Bucky Hodges is Thanksgiving tall !!

88 Divine Deablo WR 3-Jun 210 SO Winston-salem, NC
81 Samuel Denmark WR 6'0 183 Huger, SC
Edit: Forgot Denmark...
Might have been some talk of Sam Denmark moving to the other side of the ball - the hokiesports roster still shows him on offense - has the move been confirmed? He was a fairly accomplished high school receiver and top sprinter who performed well in the Carolinas Shrine Bowl.
I'm guessing you don't know how to change cell formatting in excel?
or at least that's what I tell myself....
You joke, but being able to do little things like that can get you straight paid in the IT world, especially with a VT diploma. Basically, companies think if you can understand Excel, you can learn anything.
Knowing how to use vlookup is basically my whole job.
Did Kumah actually get the redshirt? I thought I'd seen him listed as a sophomore somewhere maybe because he got some special teams work(?) Really hope he does have the extra year because he was one of my favorite recruits of 2016.
Yeah. He played a lot of special teams. He's a sophomore this season.
So looking at this list we can play 32 players on offense?
On the left is our pre-spring 14 Roster on the right is our current roster:
Depth is crazy, but maybe someone whos more involved with the program - we have a lot more walk-ons than I can ever remember under Beamer, were they just not listed or is that something with Fuente, I know Memphis kind of had a similar thing?
Also - Mod Question? - Why does col-span not work for the table?
Thank you for using my custom roster- my life has been fulfilled

Very much obliged.
Nice work, very clean and easy to follow and will be useful to keep tabs on personnel over this coming year. One thing since I am used to looking at a lot of data, and I do not in any way mean to detract from your great work or the points you are making, I noticed that the class shown for the 2014 players seems off by one year. For example, the DB's, Kn. Fuller, C. Clark and B. Fascyon are listed as Freshmen at that time, pre-Spring 2014. While that technically was correct since they were still in their first year of school that Spring, wouldn't they actually have been shown as Sophomores the way it is shown for the 2017 listee's, indicating the year of eligibility they were then in by NCAA rules? Could be I am the one off though.
Since I couldnt find a 'spring' roster for 2014, I just pulled what the roster was at the end of the year 2013. So it could be missing a few early enrollees, but I thought it gave a pretty good indication of depth comparison.
It is a good indication of depth and the running back situation doesn't look much better now than then in my opinion. Might Fuente go air heavy if Jackson turns out to be the guy?
3 more kickers and 2 more FBs then.....
9 more WRs now.....
I like the direction we are headed much more now lol
also its missing some guys noticeably Michael brewer? so im assuming that we had some more people come in during the fall that are also not listed. 3 QBs on a roster is NOT a good look.
Scroll up two comments
I was also trying to pull the spring only roster - really it started because I was curious how bare our wide receiving core was before Cam and Isaiah came in the fall and basically shot up the depth chart.
I was wondering if there was any possibility of lack of depth and incoming talent where that could be another possibility..
.from that list thanks to @thebesthokieshelmet and the roster thats currently on Hokiesports...We have 100 players currently on the roster. 2014 had 77, but I wonder if the 2014 roster didnt include walk-ons? Or if Fuente adds more walk-on depth than were used to?
*corps -- not to be confused with corpse.
I meant core. You know like your 'core' is so strong it traps your thoughts, like in a bottle....
Is AJ Bush really a R-Sr? I thought he had 2 years eligibility remaining. (Not that it matters if JJ is as good as we think he'll be and can stay healthy...)
I believe he is, yes
Looks like he's a r-Jr. Never saw the field in 2 seasons at Nebraska then played one year of Juco ball. (according to Bitter's blog)
5 punters?
The only thing I will add is that I am actually optimistic out O-line will be better, which may in turn help the running game. I know Conte and McGlock were experienced and popular players to boot, but I think we may actually be upgrading our overall talent on the right side of the line this season. The center position just has to be better this season with consistency.
I see success....
One more year in Fuente's system. Weaker early schedule to help the young guys on the line to get better and other positions to gel. Another year in the weight room with a training program that is no joke.
These guys will be ready to play. They got the sweet taste of what hard work can get them.
Defense will be just fine.
It is very important to know how to win. I thought the team as a whole learned to do that last year. They bounced back in big ways after each loss. I like the attitude of the program in general and I'm not all that nervous considering the major losses at key positions.
Clemson early has the potential to be rough imo. If both schools had their former QBs playing, I'd say it is more likely to be a great game. But removing both star player, I think Clemson has just oodles of playmakers in the ranks. Hopefully it isn't a repeat of last time they played in Lane.
We have WVU and Clemson in September. That's not going to be a weak early schedule, even with 3 creampuffs between them.
Honestly the only thing that worries me about the WVU game is the locale.
We will win because in some games we will manage to score more points than the other team.
We will lose because in other games we will let the other team score more points than us.
#Analysis
Who knew John Madden was on TKP?
Great insights! You should start a blog!
Beat me to the joke...
I like that it is "let" them score, like we are taking pity on them
Like LOLUVA getting the ten points they did against us last season.
Why we win: Time of Possession
Why we lose: Time of Possession
This is great because its true no matter what side of the TOP argument you fall on.
I'm interested how players specifically recruited for the system will benefit
the team. Lots of interesting people with different roles.
On D, we lose if: there is a rash of injuries as our depth at any position is pretty weak; if Big Tim isn't conditioned to handle the snaps he needs to play; we can't generate sufficient pass rush with 4 or 5.
On O, we lose if: we can't match Evans/Rogers contributions in the power run game; we can't find 3 of the approximately 75 WR's to step up behind Phillips and Carroll; the QB doesn't protect the ball.
On D, we win if: Big Tim and Walker can match the disruptive plays from the DT spot; both Edmundseses blossom into All-ACC players; Facyson/Stro/Alexander shut down wideouts.
On O, we win if: Fuente mixes and matches personnel and scheme to cobble together a run game; JJ (who I believe wins the QB battle easily) protects the ball; the new OL are better than those they replace.
I'm optimistic, 9+ wins.
Edmundses...Edmundi..?
Edmundodes
Edmundudes?
insert smeagol_hobitses.gif here
If Big Tim isn't conditioned properly after two years in the program, we need to fire the S&C staff.
Big Tim only needs to be conditioned well enough to play a maximum of three snaps per drive.
4 snaps. Gotta block them kicks.
FTFY
One position where younger guys can have an immediate impact is WR. I believe Ford, Phillips and Hodges made it seem like the other WRs weren't that talented, but remember, Evans was a first year QB at VT and he leaned on the experienced receiving corps because they had proven their worth. I'm very confident we'll be just fine with the talent pool we currently have. A couple of those guys will pull ahead of the pack during spring ball and will be household names by the end of September.
I think the key on offense is Travon McMillian, I feel he is our best rb and has been. He has shown the ability to break off those big speedy runs and he can also run inside. If our starting QB, whoever it may be, can lean and rely on him I think things will be just fine on offense. I also am a full believer in Coach Fuenete, last season our team had been down in a couple games by a lot of dag on points and somehow someway he made them believe they could still win. I don't think that is something that can be measured here. Its a belief, and last year the team believed, so here is to hoping this young new squad will believe also!
Truly. This is part of what people mean when they say a team has a "winning culture".
How I felt reading this. Great write-up by the way!
I'm looking forward to who will step up behind McMillian in the backfield. I have a feeling Peoples will be used more, but I'm most excited about getting McClease back. I think he'll be a fantastic receiver out of the backfield.
On defense, I think we'll be force to create depth with freshmen. Hunter will be exciting and scary to watch develop at the same time--we don't know how soon he'll be fully ready to be effective.
Ah yes. McClease and his magic cleats. Should be intriguing to see.
This team is going to have 30 defensive starters and 10 offensive starters
:)
Ummm... what... I... I have no idea what you're talking about...
I was hoping someone would post about this.
I think the biggest factor is losing Evans. I think most people have taken for granted how great he was. We can all point out the flaws (didn't go through progressions, couldn't throw the deep ball, etc), but he set most of the school QB records in his only year here. While some of that can be contributed to the scheme that Fuente brought with him, I still think Evans will be harder to replace than anything else.
On defense, I think it will all come down to injuries. If we can avoid them in key spots I think we will be ok. As far as DT depth goes, obviously we need the bodies to fill out the 2-deep, but I think we'll still be ok if we have a little drop-off from last year. Bud has said that CB and DE are the spots where he needs playmakers the most, and with some pretty good LB's behind the DT I think we're ok.
As far as the wide receivers go, it sounds like CornFu wants to utilize the sweeps and screens. I think we brought in some great players to run those this year, I'm just nervous about if we have the skill players to block for those plays. Screens and sweeps are often those boom or bust plays that are great if they work or put us behind the chains if they don't, and it always comes down to blocking.
All this being said, I went in to last year saying I would be happy if we had won 8 games (though my wife would roll her eyes and say I'm only ever happy if we win every game) and they exceeded expectations. I am hoping that happens again this year, but I am trying to keep hopes/expectations low. I will be "happy" if we can get to the
89 win mark and be in the hunt for the Coastal.Edit: I looked at our schedule and here is my hope:
Wins: Deleware, ECU, ODU, BC, Pitt, UVA
Loss: Clemson
Coin toss: WVU, UNC, Duke, UM, GT...hoping we can at least go 3-2 with these teams.
To be utterly honest, going 6-1 with 5 coin flips for wins would make me happy. The bowl streak continues and Tech gets by a big rebuilding year with a winning record.
Agree with pretty much everything. But I'm just slightly more optimistic with the schedule. I'd move UNC up to the win category. They lost essentially everything on offense and their defense isn't going to get any better either. As you said, we did lose a ton of offensive production as well but our defense, barring injury to a DT, should be good and I could see them even take a step forward if the secondary continues to improve and Trevon Hill has a good year.
Hmm. I've got wins vs everybody, and a coinflip vs Clemson twice.
Semantics, but FTFY.
Overall, thanks and great write-up. You basically presented both worst and (mostly) best case scenarios. You overlooked one unit, though: Special Teams. I'm hoping (expecting a 10 W season).
I'll tell you exactly how we lose games this year. That lackadaisical slow start on offense we groaned out against Syracuse and GT. It almost bit us in the ass against ND and Arkansas as well. None of those teams had good defenses either.
Those slow starts stemmed from execution errors, inability to run the ball, and teams selling out to stop Evan's easy throws to get him going. So an improvement in our run blocking or execution, particularly from the QB, could pay dividends in this area.
I believe you're thinking of the Michigan game when Tyrod hit Danny.
Eh they both work.
Pretty sure he was referencing the catch leading up to Dyrell's TD....See below. And FWIW at the Michigan game Logan threw Danny's TD pass not Tyrod.
It was a stretch, I'll admit.
Personally, I remember Danny's catch on that drive much more vividly than Dyrell's. Not sure why, I know I was yelling my head off for both of them.
Does anyone know where to quickly find the Tech radio call of this? The "Tyrod did it Mikey!" clip...

Second one on the list.
we lose because of injuries on defense, drop off in QB play on offense, and on ST's we can't find a punter.
on D, we win because of dominant tackles, a dominant secondary, and LBs who know their assignments . on O, we win because spring practice can focus on developing talent instead of installing the system, the talent better fits the scheme, we have fewer turnovers, and the QB is a more accurate down field passer. on ST's, Slye solves the accuracy issue on long FGs
I concur on the developing talent piece. Year two also allows more time on special teams as well. The talent we are bringing in and some of the RS from last year should provide a good core for ST. We may not have the ability to kick the ball a mile in the punt game but I am willing to bet our punt coverage stays as good or gets better. Slye, I think, is poised for a breakout year. His ball wobbles on longer kicks, but that seems to be getting better. He for sure has the leg, its a matter of control and consistency; same kick from 35 as from 55. But, most exciting in my opinion is the return game, as Shibest with more practice time will continue to polish the execution. But the speed available in our returners is top notch and will likely yield some big returns. Throw in a block here or there and our ST could indeed be special and may be the difference maker for us in several games.
I sure did! Great job, and thanks for giving me something to ponder while I wait to see what happens to Karev tonight on Grey's Anatomy. Because a Karev-less Grey's is simply unthinkable. But I digress.
We lose because of O-line. I'm nervous about replacing J-Glock.
We win because of all the things that went right in 2016. Those improvements will continue into 2017. This staff can coach, and these kids will be ready.
Oh and we beat Clemson -- maybe twice, if they can overcome their loss on September 30 to win the Atlantic. Then things will quickly get back to normal around here.
LET'S GO!!!
HO-KIES!!!
Simple. We don't lose. We don't think about losing and we don't talk about losing. The word doesn't exists for us. We will have a QB that is hard, smart, and tough. He will be a leader of men. New seniors will step up to lead as well. Our coaches will out scheme, our players will out work and out play everyone on the schedule, because thats how we roll and what Hokies do. We expect nothing but success and wins on every block, tackle, run, and pass. We focus on one play at a time and take care of the little things because thats what Hokies do. Do I need to go on? Can I get a LET's GO!!!!!
Haha I love your post even more given your username.
Hokies!
HO-KIES !!!!!!! 15-0 baby !!!!!
Great write-up. Only thing that stuck out was TT4 rather than TT5
yes, that certainly was a blaring error.

My intent was that all the analysis was so good that the only thing I'd change is a typo... came off like me being an ass :(
Lol I didn't take it that way. No worries.
So what do we define as the benchmark for a 'winning' or 'losing' year? Winning one game? Bowl Eligibility? Coastal Champions? ACC Champions? Playoff Bound? National Champions?
I'll break down my predictions on this... If winning =....
Winning one game:
UVa is on the schedule. Odds of this happening are >99%.
Bowl eligibility:
Win the games we should based on talent level. There's no reason we shouldn't beat Delaware, ECU, ODU, BC, Duke, and Virginia next year. Those wins get us to bowl eligibility. It would be a colossal failure of a season if we don't reach bowl eligibility. I'd put the odds of reaching bowl eligibility at around 85%.
Coastal Champions:
We don't need Jackson or Hooker to duplicate what Evans did, but we need them to be able to move the ball and not kill us with turnovers. We also need a WR behind Phillips to step up, and we'll need to have enough from our running game to open things up for the pass. Defensively, we just need to play our game. I'd put the odds of this goal achieved at 45%.
ACC Champions:
Jackson or Hooker finds a rhythm with Phillips and 2 other receivers, gashing teams through the air. We are able to find a bit of success in the run game, and the defense regains its form from the early to mid 2000s. We still drop a game or two from inconsistencies, but our bad games aren't nearly as bad as they were in 2016, raising the bar on our average quality of play over the course of a year. This happening would also likely need to be coupled with facing a team in the Championship Game who isn't quite firing on all cylinders. Chances of this happening are probably 15%. Whoever comes out of the Atlantic is going to be a nightmare of a legitimate National Title contender.
Playoff Bound:
We split against WVU and Clemson and run the table the rest of the way. Jackson/Hooker are everything we've heard, playing themselves into legitimate Heisman contention, making the players around them better. The defense is your classic Bud angry, but finally gets combined with an offense that can more than hold its own and we run roughshod through the ACC. We also finally get our player to seal the edge on the jet sweep, and we parlay that into easy 5 yard gains every time we go to it, opening up the rest of the offense. We also dominate the turnover battle throughout the year, routinely giving our offense short fields to work with. Its possible, but I find this highly unlikely with the roster we have, odds at about 5% to get to this point.
National Champions:
Everything from the Playoff Bound section plus a little luck once we get to the playoff. It would be the ultimate season long Cinderella Story that would be passed down for generations for college sports. You'd have your football version of the 1983 NC State Wolfpack. Odds of this happening: <1%.
You corrected the >1% to <1% and I became disappointed. I would've been happy with a 100% chance of a national championship.
I asked this on another thread but didn't get a response so I'll try again. Three questions:
1. How did JJ look with the 1s on offense towards the end of the season (Assuming he got any reps)?
2. How did JJ look against the 1s on defense with the scout team O (surely he was used in this role at some point in the season)?
3. While practicing with the 2s/3s on O did he seem to develop any chemistry with any young receivers, specifically?
Would appreciate any insight on these.
I'd imagine no one really knows because, as far as I'm aware, those practices were all closed to the public, so all we could know is what Fu/Corn decide to leak in comments. And on that front, the most I've seen said was what Corn said on the signing day show (taken from French's comment on that thread)
Yes sir. I read that too. I was just looking for some insider trading info/#sauces.
Everything I have heard from the coaches and those close to the staff at HC events the past 8 months or so is that the talk of JJ almost winning the starting role was legitimate and not coach speak or anything to do with motivating Evans. JJ looked that good in fall practices, but the coaches decided to stick with Evans for his size and experience, but would have fully trusted JJ to step in and run the team last year if the need arose. That being said, they are very glad they were able to redshirt him for a year.
The exact quote about JJ that I heard last year is that he just doesn't turn the ball over, as opposed to Evans, who had a tendency to force throws into coverage in practice. Coaches were very high on JJ before eventually deciding on Evans.
this all makes sense to me.
I'm not a football guru by any stretch of the imagination but JJ looked like the best QB in the spring game last year and it wasn't even that close. It was so noticeable, in fact, that a young novice such as myself was able to detect it. I think that kid is going to be the real deal.
Having said all of that - JJ doesn't appear to be a "runner" so we're going to need generate more rushing yards from the RB position this year instead of the QB. Hindsight being 20/20, I'm glad we started Evans and I look forward to seeing more Production from the TB position. If we can get a graduate transfer in here at DT to add depth, I think we win 9-10 games in the regular season and win the Coastal again. Once we get in the ACC Championship game, it's anybody's guess who will win.
Wiggins talked about JJ at Recruit Night and said that he is more of a pass-first type player. He went on to explain that they ran Evans more because of his natural running ability and his build. He didn't think that JJ could handle the pounding as well as Evans was able to, but noted that the QB run game is part of the offense, so of course it's still going to be run quite a bit.
I expect to see more of the slice and dice short passing game this season.
