Comic Sans? C'mon Beamer, you're better than that.

At least he isn't "formerly" extending offers...

“These people are losing their minds. This is beautiful.”

I think we have the people with the talent and passion to build out a better template and send it over to them. French, Joe, whadda ya say? Can we get some peeps on this?

Fortune Favors the Bold

Guys I think you are missing to bigger picture here:

1) Beamer probably just learned how to use a computer a couple years ago. Comic Sans is probably the default
2) The letterhead is pretty awesome. Nothing like having a Hokie bird stare at you the whole time you read it
3) I doubt they read it, just see the bad ass Hokie bird and commit

Had to even that out. Down votes are spreading like wild fire for no reason

I think reading the community guidelines needs to become a requirement to register. Even if it just automatically takes you to the page and all you have to do is navigate away from it, at least that will get more new members to read them than are currently reading them. Downvoting isnt disagreeing, its being offended. For some reason this isn't being made clear

"The Big Ten is always using excuses to cancel games with us. First Wisconsin. Then Wisconsin. After that, Wisconsin. The subsequent cancellation with Wisconsin comes to mind too. Now Penn State. What's next? Wisconsin?" -HorseOnATreadmill

Oh no. It just became clear to me thanks to that downvote. We have our first internet troll. God help us all...

sometimes its just someone on their phone trying to upvote but accidentally pushing the down vote button. I've done that countless times.

Me as well.

It happens to me as I scroll and I hit the downvote button

I think possibly adding in a requirement that you have to have x# of turkey legs to down vote could help...another option would be to limit the # of down votes you have available to use to a % of the Turkey Legs you've acquired, maybe you can cast 1 down vote for every 15-25 up votes you've received, if you only get so many down votes to use, people may be more likely to ration them out and use them more appropriately.

I think the Up/Down vote arrows should be spaced further apart, too. Especially on mobile, accidental down votes happen.

I would think it should be the opposite, kind of. Lots of turkey legs might suggest longevity on the site, or an overall positive reputation. One with piles of turkey legs has already been established as a positive member of the community.
Maybe the available downvotes I have to use should be proportional to the number of turkey legs of the person I'm trying to downvote. Example: Newbie with -1 turkey legs shouldn't be able to downvote anyone. vtfly can downvote anyone with his piles of turkey legs. Translation: Earn your reputation before being able to call someone out with downvotes.

EDIT: Just re-read your comment again after I posted. I think we agree completely, now.

What if you lose a turkey leg for every down vote you give?
That could limit the potential down votes available to a negative Nancy.

Anyone trolling downvotes probably wouldn't care. Why should I lose my turkey legs for someone else being a jerk? The forum has to be able to regulate itself.

"Exit light..."

I thought of this after posting...it would fully support the goal of minimizing negative turkey legs, and the other statement regarding why anyone should lose a 'leg for downvoting is true...

We'll just have to keep looking out for each other. No doubt its a UVA troll on the board somewhere.

From the horse's mouth.

...and I agree.

We put the K in Kwality

Maybe there should be some sort of shock that happens when you hit the down vote button. That way you REALLY have to want to down vote someone.

In all seriousness I like this idea (I mean it's from THE Horse) but at the end of the day a few random down votes aren't going to kill anyone's ability to enjoy the community. It's annoying, yes, but at the end of the day the down votes work as they should and people who call others asshats get locked out.

Some sort of confirmation pop up might fix it. I just accidentally down voted trying to press reply When my screen resized. Most of them are probably accidental on phones and since nothing happens when you do no on notices their mistake

Shouldn't these things be serious? Or at least more serious than that

I just like how Frank signs it "Coach Beamer"

Who the hell still uses Comic Sans? Jeez Louise.

Live for 32. Ut Prosim. Let's Go, Hokies.

I do occasionally, when its appropriate to do so. In general I prefer serif typefaces though, they're just easier to read.

Also I think that comic sans is marginally better than if they had used Papyrus:

I suppose the same people who designed BeamerBall dot com did this too

That's pretty embarrassing. It looks childish. The Hokie Bird is great and all, but I don't think that inspires a 17 year old kid. And yes, that font is ridiculous.

We should just send a letter to any recruit in VA with a picture of the Commonwealth Cup on it and say "be a Hokie if you want to ever hold this and be a part of our first national championship."

The kid is from New Jersey.

I just mean in general to VA recruits. Recruits outside of VA rarely understand the rivalry between us and the Hoos.

I know Izzo is a kid they want badly. I just grit my teeth when he refers to the Russell Athletic Bowl as a major bowl.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

The RAB pays out 2.2 mil, seems kinda major to me

Wiley, Brown, Russell, Drakeford, Gray, Banks, Prioleau, Charleton, Midget, Bird, McCadam, Pile, Hall, Green, Fuller, Williams, Hamilton, Rouse, Flowers, Harris, Chancellor, Carmichael, Hosley, Fuller, Exum, Jarrett

I know exactly what you mean but, it is (regrettably) the 3rd highest ACC bowl. *sigh*

We've been to lesser bowls in the past 20 years as well.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Design of any sort, and even more broadly 'taste', is inherently subjective. However, that is, objectively, very bad design. Pretty embarrassing. Get someone in the art or design school to do something that looks both professional and exciting. It can be done. Yikes.

"The TKP community is unrivaled."
-Justin Fuente, probably

i suppose they're trying to stand out. kids have stacks of letters in their rooms and you cant say this one isnt distinguishable. plus beams loves the hokie bird, cant fault him for that. but yeah you could find an artist to make something that stands out and looks cooler than that.

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

How many 17 year olds care about font? I'm willing to bet the average recruit doesn't realize you can change the font on a document. I think maybe some people are failing to see the forrest for the trees here.

On the contrary, I'm pretty sure that most 17 year old kids know more about technology than some recent college graduates (depending on their major, of course). I mean, I'm 20 and I still sometimes have problems with PowerPoint and Excel... Basic change of font on a document though, I'm almost positive that's common knowledge.

Working in IT at a small college, I'm surprised at how often I have students >25 who don't know how to do the most basic computer tasks like add an attachment to an email.

Didn't really notice what type of font was used and quite Frank-ly (see what I did there: didn't realize until after it was already there) don't care what it is, the important thing is the emphasis on education and striving for a program of national prominence. I may be a simpleton, but font means F-all to me.

The details matter, especially in this day of age where recruiting is so god-damn competitive. For comparison's sake, here's FSU's offer letter to Izzo:

How much better does that look?

I'm not asking the coaching staff to do something that's not Virginia Tech-inspired. Throw some hokie stone in there, maybe the lunch pail. But present the offer in a way that makes the recruit feel special.

And the sad thing is that that type of oversight is not indicative of how Beamer brought VT to national prominence. He built this program by focusing on the little details.

While I agree that the layout should probably be more professional, I doubt seriously that this has an influence on his decision on which school he's going to choose. He's probably just excited to be getting all of these offers. I know that's how it was when I was getting acceptance letters from universities (maybe not QUITE an equivocal comparison, but I think it works here).

I mean, on some subconscious level, MAYBE something like this is involved in the decision but no high school student is going to say "Oh, I'm not going to choose VT because they typed their scholarship offer in Comic Sans and had a HokieBird watermark on it. FSU's looked sooooooo much better."

ALL DETAILS MATTER.

🦃 🦃 🦃

The point is that it's not a big enough factor in the decision to make that much of a difference. He is looking to go to a good academic school based on how we are recruiting him. That's going to be the factor in his decision as well as playing time and chances to win championships. The font in a scholarship offer doesn't mean jack in his eyes if it is coming from a top university in both academics and athletics.

I agree it doesn't look good but I wouldn't care what it looks like as long as it's an offer and I doubt he does.

OH MY GOODNESS WE SHOULD CHISEL OUR OFFER LETTERS INTO A PIECE OF HOKIE STONE AND SEND THOSE OUT

Can you imagine how PISSED the postman would be?

Hahaha they absolutely would be. I guess we should only do this for the really really good ones. DaShawn Hand should get one.

This.

Point taken that the FSU one looks pretty sweet, but that being said if i were an elite athlete that cared about academics the only thing that would matter is a focus on academics and help to achieve that degree and a strong athletic program. So long as it isn't in windings and i can read that i don't care what don't ore image is on the letter.

That swipe function on my phone is neat-o but it's really frustrating when it just does what out wants... don't ore = font or

in Fuller we trust

I'm not a fan of FSU's use of Landscape for a letter.

Well, to be fair, they're using it as a metaphor for their degree programs.

Play no football in college yet = You've earned a scholarship offer!
Do no work in college = You've earned a degree!

EDIT:
1) I guess Mr Samantha Ponder kinda proves this wrong, though.
2) I guess FSU isn't quite Oklahoma State.

Edit to your Edit:

2) Not YET anyway...

What I get out of this is that everyone is pitching academics to Izzo. (or to his parents perhaps)
